What If Xbox Live Had Been Hacked Instead Of Sony?

Earlier this year, the PlayStation Network—along with Sony Online Entertainment—was on the receiving end of an epic cyber-attack, perhaps at the hands of infamous hacker collective Anonymous. In this edition of "What If..." Cheat Code Central examines what would have happened if Xbox Live had been hacked instead of the PlayStation Network.

firemassacre5084d ago

those hacks would end up in the same place...jail. hackers are tramps.

rabidpancakeburglar5084d ago

Yes probably. I think that it would have gone very much the same way, give or take a few things.

EVILDEAD3605084d ago

If this had happened to Microsoft and the 360 in the SAME manner..

The hate would have been on the level that would have far exceeded RROD.

See up till this point the 360 hates loved the fact that it was hackable.

Fan Bloggers would report every leak of every big 360 game in order to help them fail.

When Micrsoft banned all of those 360s from Live, the haters went wild with disgust. Saying that Micrsoft ONLY were doing it to boost sales.

But, when this happened to Sony instead, the moods and the posts changed.

If you really want to see the hypocrisy..look for the false alarms when people thought Live got hacked after it's gone down a couple of times. It's amazing what you will find..

gaffyh5084d ago (Edited 5084d ago )

The only difference would be that people would be more angry simply because they pay for online play, whereas on PSN, PS+ has nothing to do with access to online. MS would have probably had to offer 1-2 months of free XBLG to everyone just like Sony did with PS+, dunno if that would have kept people happy though.

I also believe that MS would have gone about the hack the same as Sony. They would have waited until they confirmed an issue, rather than spreading mass hysteria, which so many people believe Sony should have done. This is proven by the fact that the earlier rumors where LulzSec said that they had hacked XBL were untrue. Because in this instance, rather than say "change your passwords, credit cards, it's the end of the world," they simply said, we're looking into it, and confirmed that there was no hack a few days later. In the same way, Sony looked into it, and confirmed there was a hack and "POSSIBLE" access to credit card details a few days later.

evrfighter5084d ago (Edited 5084d ago )

N4G would have been a massive circle jerk. Ps3 fanboys would have been singing the praises for lulzsec and anon.

Psn was down for a week before anyone knew what was goin on. Horribly handled

Dante1125084d ago (Edited 5084d ago )

@ Evil and evrfighters

Lol, hypocrisy? You mean like what you're doing now complaining about what the ps3 community "would've" done when you were LITERALLY the same two cheering and applauding Anon, Lulzsec and the PSN hackers when they DID break in? XD

EVILDEAD3605084d ago

@ Dante

GTFOH..

Stop making up lies...show me one time where I cheerleaded anything..is that all you trolls can do is tell Internet ducktales to make a point?

Dont be mad @ the fact that I'm keeping it real..got a counter point then make it..but if you got to lie then please stfu

SilentNegotiator5084d ago

People are always citing "security" now for paying for LIVE, but LIVE wasn't the one attacked by aim-less, self-righteous hackers.

If their beef was with Microsoft, the same results might very well have ensued.

Dante1125084d ago (Edited 5084d ago )

@ Evil

Lol, I'm mad? So far to told me to stfu. gtfho, called me a troll, etc. Seems like you're mad cause I'm keeping it real. ;) Also, my above comment was my counter argument. How can you even say what/how the ps3 community as a whole would love to see, what they would've done and scream hypocrisy when you as well as evrfighter did most of the things you stated ps3 gamers would do? Irony...No wonder 37 people have you ignored.

And to reply to evrfighters "where I say that' before he edited his comment.

"oh anon how I <3 them. for without them n4g would have been pretty boring the week. If they get some good dirt on Tretton lol...it should make for a pretty entertaining day on n4g."

http://n4g.com/user/comment...

EVILDEAD3605084d ago

'Also, my above comment was my counter argument. How can you even say what/how the ps3 community as a whole would love to see, what they would've done'

Do you even know what the topic is? The author asked for speculation of what would have happened if Xbox Live would have been hacked.

You respond with lies saying that I'm 'complaining about what the ps3 community "would've" done when you were LITERALLY the same two cheering and applauding Anon, Lulzsec and the PSN hackers when they DID break in'

Again I say GTFOH..because I NEVER cheered on anybody..show me ONE post where I did some stupid -ish like that.

Two if you actually READ my reply you would have saw that I said the 360 'haters'..you stretch that as I'm talking about the WHOLE PS3 COMMUNITY?? Again..show me where this happened..

You can't because it didn't..which is why I called you out as a liar..as for the troll stuff..look at your own history..so you jumping to conclusions and compleely misinterpreting my words makes since..

I've been on N4G as well as many forums and just like other below have speculated as well..it's not rocket science what would have happened..and if you want proof..again look up the other week when LIVE was supposedly down and the rumor was that it was hacked. READ the comments for yourself..

In fact, one of em' was 'GOOD now they get to see it how it feels'..

So again on topic..my point stands..it would have been the same stuff..different day..

Kurylo3d5083d ago

You know the problem with this article is that this sort of thing would not happen to microsoft. Sony didnt even bother to encrypt the data... if they had encrypted it then even if the hackers get in there is no harm because they cant see the data and would take them 1000 years to break the encryption. Sony was lazy with there security and they paid the price...

It would of been madness... but instead, we got articles and threads about how good it was for us that PSN was hacked, and you could go out and get fresh air and etc...etc..etc..

depends on how MS handled the aftermath. i thought Sony did a terrible job not warning us that we might have had our CC info stolen soon enough, etc. for that im skeptical of them keeping my data safe, just like i am of any others if this happened.

BrianG5084d ago (Edited 5084d ago )

I thought they warned us pretty darn fast and took appropriate actions before giving a full disclosure to the public. How can you say "CC info was compromised" if you don't know.

Maybe that is just me though since I have seen relatives warned MONTHS after data leaks by the hospital their child was born at.

People are underestimating Sony, pointing the finger at them instead of thinking "Hey, maybe the hackers did a damn good job of covering up their tracks"

EDIT: On topic. I'm sure MS would have handled it to the best of their capabilities just like Sony. I'm also sure they would get all the hate articles and people saying "didn't respond fast enough".

Anon19745084d ago (Edited 5084d ago )

I'm happy with how Sony handled the situation. When they were able to verify what happened, if anything, they let us know and then they made it right. Thankfully, credit card info was encrypted so there were no worries, and if you did worry Sony had you covered with their fraud protection plan.

At the same time, Citibank was victim of a hack which saw massive amounts of credit cards breached and 2.7 million was confirmed stolen. They found out May 10th and didn't tell anyone until July. Real money was taken - and the media didn't say boo. I guess they were too busy salivating at the prospect of taking video games down a peg or two.

As for Microsoft, we have an idea what would happen if they were hacked. Back in 2007 a security firm confirmed that XBL accounts were being hacked and credit cards linked to the accounts were being charged due to an exploit through Bungie.net and Microsoft's Live Anywhere service. Microsoft said a week after the news hit they'd investigate. Nothing more was ever said.

Had they taken down XBL while they investigated as Sony did, no doubt we would have heard about it. However, Microsoft kept it all on the down low. That's how Microsoft deals with hacks. They have plenty of experience dealing with Windows security breaches.

Thugbot1875083d ago

The difference is Microsoft has opened Pandora's Box in the past; Windows 95 - XP. Last generation the Xbox was basically a PC and people installed Linux on it. I think MS got upset over the whole thing but couldn’t block it. So this generation they decided no Linux. Long and short they wouldn’t have gotten into the same conflict with Geo Hotz. Sony messed up from the start trying to appeal to the homebrew people. If you look at my old post I stated they will have a change of heart when the hackers get out of control; just ask Microsoft.

M-A-R-S-H-A-L-L5083d ago

Wow, look at evrfighter and Evil Dead playing the victims card when it's been pretty obvious how N4G used to be when the PS3 was first announced. You guys are proving what I've always said since Day One. 360 fan love to play the victim.

Anyways, if this happened to the 360, I would expect 360 fans to be angry and Microsoft to take action. Hacking isn't good for either company.

gamingdroid5084d ago (Edited 5084d ago )

Legally they have to comply with laws, so yes they would have to admit to it. After all, they admitted to RROD which technially wasn't required by law!

Kleptic5084d ago

^^^i'm not defending either MS or Sony...but seriously...anyone can admit that it took FOREVER for MS to finally admit to a hardware problem...for nearly 2 years it was the standard 'our hardware is within the reliability percentage of all our competition'...

BrianG5084d ago

Vega75.

I'm also sure MS notified their customers within 48 hours because they easily spotted the reason for the downtime.

If it had been an attack on the company, I'm not sure how long it would have taken. Much more complex than spotting an inability to meet rising online traffic (or whatever the reason was for the 11 day downtime).

And I'm pretty sure we were told it was an "intrusion" early one, just not the extent of the intrusion on PSN.

Like Rrod or the Xmas weekend when Live was down right? Oh wait, did I just piss on your tin foil hat? Now whats going to protect you from the alien brainwave controller?

-Alpha5084d ago (Edited 5084d ago )

Oh please, all the amateur sites that you consider "media" would have been just as over it, if not more considering LIVE is a paid service.

Hits are hits. Sony's hack was an undeniable goldmine of content for these websites that on any other day would be posting "Top Ten Games" Lists. Sure, some hate Sony but some surely hate MS too. Regardless of who gets attacked, websites aren't going to skip out on easy hits when stories can write themselves. Anyone part of a website or who owns one knows that its their free ticket to write about the PSN incident. And in order to stick out from a sea of similar sites, they will do whatever it takes to get attention.

MS would have been just as exploited for hits by the craptacular amount of random websites that seem to pop up overnight. That's the nature of a lot of websites that get on N4G, they see an opportunity and they'll capitalize it to the death.

In fact, this article is no different and is also capitalizing on Sony's hacking situation by simply posing this question. Opening up old wounds for a quick click. Just because they aren't attacking Sony's fiasco doesn't mean that they are any different from the ones that do

That's essentially the larger problem: Some of you only got upset when Sony was attacked. All these sites are looking for a way to create a story out of a situation. Some speculate, some google information and create a "new" story out of old information, others simply capitalize on the frenzy.

N4G is a feeding frenzy, the sites just use different baits. Doesn't mean that they are real fishermen, but we take a bite anyway.

Godmars2905084d ago

But unless credit card info was taken MS wouldn't have been called before the US Congress. Maybe not even then.

I really doubt reaction would have been as critical to how soon they made a public announcement about it.

gamingdroid5084d ago

n4g itself promotes and prefer these types of articles, because it is traffic.

RROD as well as the Xbox Live semi-outage articles was all over n4g at the time it occurred.

Just_The_Truth5084d ago

honestly i'd be the exact same thing. It doesn't matter who it happened to or does happen to, hackers did it so neither company is to blame. If anything i hope it showed devs you shouldn't just relie on multipler to support your games. Split-screen and co-op games need to be revived. I can honestly say i had more fun playing system linked 4 vs. 4 halo matches then i ever had with online. UC3 is also the most recent fun i've had with split screen. Anyways this gen has been great but i'd like to see more games that focus on single player and local matches.

Kalowest5084d ago

Isn't MS trying to stay on their good side. Their supporting the Kinect Mods, and releasing PC software for it later on this year(I think they did already).

MrBeatdown5084d ago (Edited 5084d ago )

Kinect mods are something entirely different from the kind of hacking going on on Sony's side.

Sony doesn't care that people hack Dual Shocks or the PS Eye (which I actually use as my webcam) or Move, just like MS doesn't mind Kinect hacks. Both sell accessories at a profit, so neither care if people can find additional uses for those.

If somebody was hacking the 360 hardware or hacking into Xbox Live, MS wouldn't be any more thrilled with it than Sony were.

rainslacker2553d ago

People are disagreeing with you, but you have a point. Why would Sony want people to get any kind of investment through a competing ecosystem.

I don't think it's their biggest reason for not doing cross play, but obviously, they probably wouldn't be too keen on such a thing.

gamer78042553d ago

Other games devs that want crossplay wouldn't have achievements. Th. Answer has already been revealed as a monetary decision

Eonjay2553d ago

@gamer
Yes its always about mon edy, for both. Nothing else.

Sharky2312553d ago

I think at first everybody was in agreement and then MS dropped a money figure. Sony probably felt that it was unreasonable because they have the bigger install base. Nintendo needed this to happen so they jumped right in. That’s just my opinion I could be wrong!

rainslacker2553d ago

@gamer

True, but at the same time, allowing cross play opens up these kinds of doors. If the two companies talked about it as some point, then they both had their own needs for it to go forward. I doubt either of them just outright denied the other to be a dick about it. But I can easily see that the things one company asked for not being acceptable to the other, and as it stands, we don't know what was asked for, by who, or who couldn't agree with such demands. For all we know, Sony had some demand that MS couldn't accept.

But Eonjay is right. Money will have a lot to do with it....although I doubt any exchange of money would need to take place. But on the back end, Sony, or even MS, may have felt the potential loss to their own brand didn't outweigh the benefits to their consumer.

@Sharky

I couldn't say with Nintendo. I have this feeling they don't really know where they want to go with their online. I don't see cross play with Switch really benefiting or hurting their system, because I don't really think Nintendo's main focus is online gaming to such a high degree to begin with. Nintendo is just starting up their online service, and I feel it's going to go through some growing pains. I hope that what they're doing works out for them, and if anything, maybe between them and MS, they'll show that cross play isn't going to be an issue no matter how it plays out.

Eonjay2553d ago

Sony is under no obligation to host the competitors ecosystem on it's own paid service. At all. They don't owe you anything. You are not entitled to PSN.

mcstorm2553d ago

King_Lothric do you remember a console called the PlayStation Vita? Oooo I guess that's not counted because it sold poor and had no support at all from Sony?

Come on Sony have messed up a few times some times it hurts them others it dose not. VR was the next big thing and we are still waiting with less and less games adapting vr.
Move ps eye also devices that have slid back into the shadows. All 3 have made mistakes this gen and all 3 are trying to put them right.
Cross play though is one Sony need to out right. Why should everyone not be able to play each other no matter the console if you own the same game for me this is kind of where Sony have a 1up and one down on Microsoft as if they open it up to work with everyone else they have the exclusives locked up at the moment so more reason for people to cross play on a PS4 over the other two but psn is still not as good as live and online play is better on the xbox. That makes it an interesting battle as for the switch well Nintendo have a lot of catching up to do online side but Nintendo gamers do like Nintendo games and if games like fortnight, Minecraft and more are cross play on it the better for Nintendo.

For me ide just love to be able to play my ps or switch friends from my Xbox or when our and about from my switch and pickup from where I left off to. Times have moved on it should not be a closed system anymore for gaming no matter th IP or console.

rainslacker2553d ago (Edited 2553d ago )

Hate to break it to you, but XBL is a closed ecosystem. MS wants nothing more than to make their ecosystem as closed as possible. This achievement thing just brings them more users, which is what they want. It works out for the gamer, but it's not like they're doing it because they're amazingly altruistic.

Personally, I'd rather that Nintendo just make their own achievement system. That's something they are way behind on, and there is no reason not to have it. I'd imagine more people would care about that than they'd care about playing minecraft with Xbox players. But to date, we haven't seen a lot of Switch players caring about achievements either....so take that for what it's worth.

porkChop2553d ago

Achievements and gamerscore are no more intrusive than trophies and levels on PS. It's the same system, just with different branding. Not liking the idea of having Xbox stuff is fine, I do personally think it's a little weird, but I wouldn't say it's intrusive.

rainslacker2553d ago

@aconnellan

What does it get MS? It gets them direct access to Nintendo's user base. They now have a email address of a Nintendo user. MS can, and likely will, send out marketing directly to those people, circumventing every compliance standard in place in how 3rd party publishers are allowed to contact said systems user base. I'm almost positive this is why Sony wouldn't allow it on PSN, despite not disallowing 3rd party accounts.

On top of that, it gets them yet another MAU. Something that's very important to MS, because that's what they're using to report to investors on their future potential, and current standings. That means that the bigger the numbers go, the more their stocks are worth. Hence, more money to work with.

Beyond that, it gets people invested in their ecosystem in some way. That's good for MS, not so good for Nintendo if people decide to move over to Xbox for some reason.

This whole thing seems like it's much more beneficial for MS than it is Nintendo. I'm not really sure what Nintendo is getting out of it, and seems like a lot to risk just to have one game with cross play to have some good PR and a way to promote their own online service.

The competition are surviving just fine. Every sony fan acts like they got 80 million users over night. It's taken years for them to get to that number and if switch came out decades ago at the same time it would have the same user base or more by now. Sony fanboys like to selectively forget this fact though

XabiDaChosenOne2553d ago

It took Sony a little more than four years to get to this point not "decades" and the WiiU released an entire year before the PS4 and it isat 1/8th of the sales what's your excuse for that?

DwightSchrute012553d ago

@XsbiDaChosenOne Wii U an d the switch are 2 different consoles. Any idiot can see that. Was the Wii U marketed as well as the switch Is? Could you play the Wii U on the go? Did the Wii U have as much 3rd party support as the switch. No.

Had these games not sold so poorly, Wii U would’ve at least continued to see installments of those. Switch only really gets third party support through Bethesda, Japanese titles, and a couple sports franchise. It’s basically missing everything else.

PS4 is doing better than you think. 3DS launches 2 1/2 years before PS4, and PS4 still outsold 3DS before hitting its 4 year anniversary.
