Final Fantasy XIII-2 is a Cruel Joke, What is Square Enix Thinking?

PSLS writes: "After five years of consumers waiting patiently, Square Enix released Final Fantasy XIII in late 2009. Its timing couldn’t have been more appropriate: current generation consoles were struggling with an RPG drought as developers turned to handhelds for less risk and a large mobile market in Japan. But if any series could bring the classic feeling of adventuring through a beautiful world with a vast array of interesting characters, it would have to be none other than the legendary Final Fantasy. Unfortunately, Final Fantasy XIII‘s release didn’t satisfy many people, and Japanese forums were flooded with disappointment within days of its release. Even with this negative reception, Square Enix has announced a sequel named Final Fantasy XIII-2, and as many are, we’re extremely confounded."

Square has sucked for a few years already.

FF XIII with a 83 Metacritic, which is extremely low for a main FF game and heck FF XII had a 92 on metacritic. lol

N4SIR4686d ago

12 was a sweet game! waaaaaaaaaaaay better than 10!

JoySticksFTW4686d ago

"what's SE thinking?"

They're thinking that they no longer want our business.

I can't judge this game just yet, since I didn't play it. But I won't be getting it day one like I used to do for Squaresoft games.

I'll wait for other gamers to buy it first and tell me it's worth the purchase (not "professional" reviewers who don't need to pay for it)

slayorofgods4686d ago

Square Enix just doesn't get it... Its too bad, Final Fantasy used to be one of my favorite series.

coolfool4686d ago

I'm not sure why there is such a myth as to the reason behind FFXIII-2. Regardless of metacritic score, FFXIII sold. It sold well. Those numbers alone justify (from a business standpoint, not artistic) another iteration.

12 is muuuch better than 10 lol, and 13 was good

They are simply maximizing the return on their return on investment.

FF13 cost them a bomb... and with recent games receiving luke warm reception - they have no other choice.

AriesFury4685d ago (Edited 4685d ago )

This has a lot to do with Sony being involved

Please, they have no idea what they're talking about. The east loved the game from the moment of its release. Recent polls have put Final Fantasy XIII as the best game of all time by both readers and magazines (Famitsu). You may disagree, but I have a feeling America's just having a knee-jerk reaction because they think JRPG's are behind the times, and look to their own studios like Bioware and Bethesda for supposedly "great" RPG's. I can't believe everyone's still bitter over this.

joinsideke4686d ago

I understand where you're coming from. Different areas have different tastes, and that certainly plays a large part in title released- especially as the publisher has to cater to whichever audience they feel is more important. However, I don't know if anyone can really deny Squeenix's downhill spiral. Not even their sales can prove differently…

N311V4686d ago

Interesting to know.

Personally I didn't see what all the compliants were about.

I'll admit I didn't find the characters in XIII all that great.

Apart from that though this felt like a typical FF game, excellent graphics and sound, good story, tactical combat (I pretty much never used auto-attack) and no more linear than those I've played in the past.

NeoBasch4686d ago (Edited 4686d ago )

I can deny it and will. Granted, would I prefer more artsy games like Xenogears, Vagrant Story, Chrono Cross, or Valkyrie Profile? Hell yes, but the Final Fantasy series has been doing just fine with the exception of XIV, which has tanked in both sales and quality but they still have an opportunity to fix it, though I'm sure it will never be popular despite any increase in quality.

And the truth is, SquareEnix is doing just fine. They've been supporting the PSP more so than any other developer: Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, Final Fantasy IV The Complete Collection, The Third Birthday, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core, Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions, Final Fantasy Type-0, Disidia Final Fantasy/Duodecim, and Valkyrie Profile Lenneth.

They gave us some pretty nice remakes and originals on the DS, too many to list (but I have to mention at least the Final Fantasy IV remake and a little game called The World Ends with You). SquareEnix definitely still has it in 'em. Maybe it's just that SE casuals jump on board for the occasional release thinking its okay to say the end is near because Final Fantasy XIII represents the entirety of SquareEnix, despite the fact that they've been releasing a ridiculous amount of quality software as of late.

If anything, Square has slightly improved from their PS2 days, with the only notable titles being Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII, Dragon Quest VIII, Valkyrie Profile 2, and the Kingdom Hearts series. During that time, they also released a plethora of ports on the GBA, PSP, and a brief cash-in on the DS with Final Fantasy Fables (the one with the chocobo. I guess people forgot about the abysmal Unlimited Saga and Dawn of Mana, and how Crystal Chronicles dropped the ball. Let's not forget the horrid Dirge of Cerberus either.

Nah, you're right, it's over for Square. /s

RedDead4686d ago

As a fan of square, I hate FFXIII. Other than that, their other games have been good, although they have fallen imo, compared to what they used to be. A shell of their former selves anyway

morganfell4686d ago (Edited 4686d ago )

In some ways, I have to cast my lot with Neobasch and Scottis as well. I actually enjoyed FFXIII and I am looking forward to 2. My main issue is with the silence regarding Versus. If the game turns out to be what some hope then it will be wonderful to watch them act as if Square "suddenly" got it right when they have been getting it right all along. A legion of current fans counters any claim to the contrary.

I also enjoyed Neobasch's comment regarding Western RPG devs. ME2 was anything but a RPG. Perhaps that is the concern of the audience with the complaints. Too much RPG from Square and not enough blow this or that up. Because in a RPG comparison between FFXIII and games like ME2...well there really isn't a RPG comparison.

From a sales standpoint Square has to be shaking their heads and looking at some people with a wry grin. The most vocal complainers might be a bit miffed to realize they are actually in the minority of SE's attention. There is an entire world out there. SE will likely try to institute some changes based on the negative feedback but the truth is the most angst ridden might as well jump now because they aren't driving the train.

And the fact is Metacritic, when compared to sales, is hardly going to matter in the big picture. Only people like Peter Molyneux lose sleep over such issues.

Tru_Ray4685d ago

You make an excellent point NeoBasch. The lower metacritic score that FFXIII received can be attributed to changing tastes of the western gaming media. With the popularity of WoW, Fallout 3, Oblivion, and Mass Effect, the western gaming media has become disenchanted with the JRPG genre and has been clamoring for guns, an open world, and 3rd person shooting mechanics to appear in a JRPG.

Don't get me wrong, I think that the above-referenced games are cool and have arguably progressed the genre in interesting and novel ways, but the continual barrage of sweeping generalizations regarding the declining quality of JRPGs have reached ridiculous levels of hyperbole.

IMO Valkyria Chronicles and Demon's Souls are on equal footing with any RPG that has emerged from the west this generation.

For those of you are mystified by why there is a sequel to FFXIII perhaps you should check the sales data, which would reveal that it has been a commercial success.

It really isn't that hard to figure out.

=) "I can't believe people are still bitter over this". Great phrase to use and I can think up of a reason why. With Final Fantasy being an exclusive it almost felt like the MONEY factor was ignored and rather only embraced the artistic, the high fantasy and a truly great story. So when we keep hearing the words BUSINESS DECISION I think it kinda ruins it for people.

It's like - We know, we know...just stop saying it xD

It's way cheaper for them to reskin an old game with a few minor achievements then actually go back and start from scratch and actually make something good.

Same with MW3. Not with BF3.

Luckily MW was a great game, so the reskinning means that the new MW's are only mildy crap.

darthawesome904686d ago

Funny that you mention Call of duty: Modern Warfare. Squeenix said that was their inspiration for XIII (linear corridors among others).

I hope they are not reskinning XIII because XIII was major crap.

T3mpr1x4686d ago

Oh man I hope they never said that, and that you're being sarcastic right now haha...ha?

Sevir044686d ago

actually! everyone who has had hands on time with the game at E3 said the game has completely remedied FF13's failures in every possible way! I'm actually excited for 13-2. IGN gameinformer and a few other reputable journal sites reported that the linearity is gone and exploration and wonder has been broght back! I cant wait to play this sequel.

DaTruth4686d ago

That's what I heard too and I was getting excited; then I see this!

I'm wondering if this guy actually played the game at all, since the hands-on articles actually have details of the E3 demo and not just general complaints about perceived gameplay mechanics and what the game will be lacking that was included in the E3 demo!

Kenshin_BATT0USAI4686d ago

I read the same and watched a few previews for it already. It looks improved. They confirmed towns this time as well. So I think I'll give it the benefit of the doubt here.

Prototype4686d ago

I learned my lesson believing what SE says about "fixing" games; If it's not bargin-binned within 4 months I'll redbox it first to see what "changes" they put in to fix from 13.

Lifewish4685d ago

I played the game at E3 and saw nothing that special about it IMO.

More intelligent than guerilla games

raWfodog1d 11h ago (Edited 1d 11h ago )

Atlus is releasing their game one week before Erdtree, SE is releasing theirs one week after.

HZD released four days before Zelda, HFW released one week before Elden Ring.

It seems to me like they are still releasing their games too close to Erdtree.

What a word vomit, rambling, turd of an article that simply states the obvious. Classic exputer.

I find his comments around how Balan turned out to be very insightful as to why the game is trash. He basically apologises for its existence

solideagle15d ago

can you please give some of us who don't know anything about this, a summary of what happened?

Chocoburger15d ago

Balan was knowingly rushed out by S-E, it had an extremely short dev cycle and was fairly low budget.
Naka was the game's director until near the end when he was fired or perhaps he quit, I forgot.

carrotcakeag14d ago

@Chocoburger Yeah they did fire and replace him which caused him to unload a bunch of rants about the company. The project only existed because of Naka in the first place, he convinced Square to give him one shot at making a platformer. They gave him an opportunity but pulled the rug out before he was done for reasons not explained.

jznrpg18d ago

Hopefully they don’t. From this it doesn’t sound like that is the case and development is just taking too long.
