TheSixthAxis Hands On: Gioteck HF-2 Controller

Matt W [Echo]: "I’ve been a big fan of the Xbox 360 controller since the launch of the 360 itself and I’ve long desired a similar option for the PS3. Don’t get me wrong, the DualShock 3 is a fantastic controller and works perfectly for just about every genre, but when it comes to shooters, I prefer the ‘alternate’ layout of the analog sticks. This preference has led me on a seemingly endless search for a usable third-party option that offers what the DS3 doesn’t. I’d venture a guess that I’ve tried somewhere in the neighborhood of about 12 different controllers, all of them containing at least one fatal flaw."

If you really want a 360 controller on your PS3 then why not just buy one of those xcm crossfire adapters and use an actual 360 controller. They're cheaper than some cheap ass 3rd party lookalike controller.

Bought one it had lag and was always pullin the screen left when I went straight... So annoying

funny i was thinking of buying the xcm 2.1
for the xbox.i hate the xbox controller with a passion, feels like a brick in ur hands.

I quite like its chunkiness, it could be good as a secondary controller I guess. I'd like to try one out. I hate buying non-standard controllers as you don't exactly get a chance to test them enough beforehand.

Looks nice(though would have preferred standard black instead of the camo/whatever design), but did they really have to change the D-Pad to 360? meh, guess I'll stick with me standard DS3 :0

I bought the HF-1 version which is identical in design & the only difference is the firmware upgrades are available on HF-2 & not on HF-1.
I decided to try the controller as I was sick of every 2nd PS3 shooter using the R1 as fire & L1 as zoom & the options in these games did not have a control configuration that swapped the R1 with R2, & L1 with L2, so all my shooters were set up the same. I mean, it's not that big a deal really as I'm as good with one as with the other, so I can basically use either control method with ease & accuracy......but being a bit pedantic with this kind of stuff, I searched for new controllers & loved the look & fact the buttons were swappable with HF-1, plus being blue tooth unlike 95% of the 3rd party controllers was a great selling point as well.

Now, Gioteck are supposed to be releasing a rechargeable battery pack for the HF-2 soon, there website did say the same thing for HF-1 before replaced with new model, so I'm hoping it works with both, or I'll be sending Gioteck some abusive emails & calls to hopefully get them to upgrade me to HF-2.

I am a fan of Sony's parallel anologue sticks & still find them way better for any & every game type (including shooters) as opposed to the out of whack this controller & 360 controllers use, but IMO this controller is so good in every other department that the non-parallel sticks can be forgiven & is something that doesn't take a huge ammount of getting used to (especially if like me, you have a 360 anyway). I do find the over all feel of the HF-1 controller more comfy than 360's & DS3.
I reccommend PS3 owners looking for a different controller that allows the shoulder triggers & bumper buttons to be reversed, therefore allowing fps's like MAG & the like, to have the same button configuration as the COD's & 50-60% of other fps's on the PS3. (why developers don't offer every & all button configurations for all games is beyond me, & defies explanation given the ammount of money we have to pay for these games). The HF-1 is just a great controller all round & is sturdy as all beggery.
The only 3 gripes I can make towards the controller is the offset analogue sticks, the replacement battery method (which may be rectified soon), and the fact it does not sixaxis, which wouldn't have been a big deal until I was playing KZ3 1 nite & I was unable to turn off/on a gas valve or something of the like. I don't think there was anyway around it other than turning on another controller to do those bits. Not a deal breaker by any stretch really, but did add small inconveniance. I was however under the impression that KZ2&3 only offered the shoulder buttons fire/zoom only config., but recently a mate made me aware of a little option I had been missing that allowed these buttons to be swapped.

The score for the first Plants Vs Zombies is such great, iconic music that it has a timeless quality. Not quite the level of Minecraft, but wonderful in its own right.
