PS Vita and 3DS in Trouble: Onlive Brings Next Gen Gaming to the iPad

Onlive is stepping their game up to a whole new level by providing popular games on the Apple Ipad. If you remember Onlive from last year, their system is mostly comprised of computers doing all the hard rendering, while you play games comfortably from your PC. So in a nutshell, they’re bringing next gen gaming to people whose computers don’t meet the minimum requirements (Assassins Creed, Borderlands, and Crysis)...

You can mount the iPad on something and use the OnLive controller. Did you really think you could play PC games without buttons? Just imagine how cluttered the screen would be with virtual buttons AND a HUD, lol.

I think you'd actually have to buy the games full price, or a rental price to keep the game for a limited time. Just like real life, except you have to pay a subscription fee and that the game is not running on your hardware.

I own a ipad version 1.
i also play online and play SP on games on the ipad i got to say apple have not made o attempt to make a joypad for the ipad to go onto the screen.
even thoe you have onscreen touch display buttons its still nicer.
another issue is how heavy it is, if you play for more than 20 minutes ipad 1 tends to get pritty heavy. specially if you play some games that i do that you constantly moving the pad all directions.

but visually there not bad take a look at infinity blade a very good example of what can be done on the ipad when used correctly. but no you cant beat a proper handheld gaming device. but this wasnt actually just made for gaming.

Onlive either sales you the full copy of the game or 3-7 day rentals along with a monthly few that offers most games for play. If you buy the game its yours. There is no monthly service fee just to be a member or access content you already paid for.

yes personally i dont care for using buttons that are on the game play screen. I like having touch screen controls in some cases but only in an auxiallary way like activating a powerup for example. Not for the primary gameplay.

I don't I know an avid gamer whom would play a game like Assassin's Creed or Borderlands (is the Ipad capable of handling those titles?), I mean those are "tune out everything around me" hardcore titles playing them on the iPad? Really? Really? iPad stumbled into the gaming market, who is honestly going to subscribe to onlive. Many people who have an ipad play small games like angry birds. I see where he was coming from but saying that it could hurt the 3DS and/or Vita is, well just no.

Don't think so. I've had several touch screen smart phones and one thing has been made abundantly clear to me: I hate using touch screens for gaming!!

And people complain about the portability of the Vita. Also you cant play all games on onlive with just touchscreen controls. And if you can imagine how horrible it must be to play an FPS with an IPAD. Not to mention the IPAD only uses 3G which means you have to rely on a Wifi connection which are not all over the place.

The 3DS and Vita are much better gemming devices than the Itouch XL.

God Onlive gets more stupid every time they talk about it... dedicated online needed, and touch screen controls so no thanks. Even if they make some sort of controller for it, how awkward would that be when playing. I have to set the iPad in my lap, um no thanks...

That service won't work on 3G, and it will be a while before 4G is nationwide, so it would be wifi only. Then there are the bandwidth limits that are in place, and this kind of thing will eat up bandwidth... I feel sorry for the people who will no doubt use this and get extra fees for exceeding there bandwidth.

At the end of the day Onlive is nothing more than a high price rental service, with horrible side effects, and I don't rent games... if Onlive actually gave in consumers an actual way to own the games there purchasing then I would be more okay with it. By while they continue to stream games instead of offering a download options... it will continue to be a horrible service.

PS: This is the first time I have seen Sony and Nintendo fan-boys actually come together on something on N4G. Lol

There are definitely a lot of conservative gamers on n4g.com. Anyone who farts the idea of change and you all have a heart attack as if the very fabric of time and space is threatened. Just like when streamed media was taking shape people claimed it will never happen. Now look, Netflix and hulu are on your console. You can say what you want about games on iPad or iPhone, reality is they have made a noticeable dent in the game market.

There is a big difference between streaming movies and streaming games... people tend to watch movies one time and then never look at it again. Gaming on the other hand, some games people play for years and become classics. This is not the kind of thing that you can do with a service like Onlive. Sooner or later, they WILL remove the game from there servers then you will no longer be able to play it. This the BIG issue with streaming, that an bandwidth...

I fail to see how games on the iPad or iPhone have made a noticeable dent in console gaming... possibly handheld gaming to a point but real gamers know which is the better option. But comparing console gaming to phone gaming is like comparing an apple to an orange. If anything has hurt the console market its the economy and publishers that are milking there games.

At the end of the day, while we do have services like Netfix and Hulu, have either of these services fazed out the other markets... NO! Has iTunes killed music CD's or buying retail movies...NO!. The market may shift, but one thing will not faze out all the other markets either. It may just be more divided...

personllay, i have a badass computer and hate 720p so i would not touch onlive, but for people who want to game AAA games at slightly better than console quality setting, and are on the go, say staying in a hotel room with good wifi and have an ipad and an onlive controller, beats lugging around a ps3 or 360 and a bunch of games,

honestly though, a $600 laptop and STEAM will shit all over anything onlive/ps3/360 can do with ease and run at better framerates, and on pc you have a 100x bigger library to choose from than ps3 and 360 combined!

so if you needed portable gaming, that would be the way to go!
