TheGamingLiberty.com: "Sad news this. Game Republic, the Japanese studio behind everything from Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom to Genji: Days of the Blade, have apparently shut down. The studio were also responsible for PS3 sleeper hit Folklore."
*holds Folklore and both Genji games close and cries*
Sadly, this has happend way too often this gen. We can only wish them the best.
But why not get rid of 1 of the expendable teams just just make the same cookie cutter gun games over and over again? WE'RE KILLING THE IMAGINATION!
Unfortunately, in many cases, niche games like Maijin take a backseat over shooters. It boils down to what the masses want and what will most likely make a buck for publishers. But in all fairness, making a pretty bad FPS will also tank a studio.
I can't believe I'm perusing a career in game design. Someone must be filling my coffee with shrooms.
SilentNegotiator, I'm started up a bedroom dev studio to try and keep imagination in the industry alive. You make sure to try the same thing! Or move to Douglasville and join my cause.
And people still want to rush into the next gen. Christ, look here people. People will lose there jobs even MORE SO. Middle class gaming is almost extinct. Games like Folk Lore, or Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom can't co exsist anymore. It's now AAA, with guns ablazing, or go home.
Yeah that's what I always said. Everyone can say they want newer shinier consoles that push even better graphics but so many studios can't even keep up with the cost with apparently "old" technology like the 360 and PS3. It's never good when people lose their jobs.
*Hold all three games and cries with you* I hate it when the small studios close down. They are always the ones that are willing to take chances with their games ironically.
Note to small studios the Vita and 3DS are viable options for great games. I don't understand why they don't follow dev teams like Level 5 and the scribblenauts guys. You can make games for many platforms. Majin would have done well on a portable because it would have been so unique and stand out. The graphical fidelity may not be what they envisioned but it may keep them employed. Sad news. Folklore was a really cool concept and excellent execution on all fronts.
I'm glad someone else liked Genji. I played Days of the Blade and loved it. I can't believe the ridicule the game received from the media, just because they "dared" put a fictious giant crab in it. I'm starting to think that the western media is just an advertisement outlet for western games and/or consoles.
Well they made fun of it cause they were saying it was based on history and they were using actual battles that actually took place in recreations of they actual battle locations. And then the crab comes out. It just stood out as conflicting after saying it was based on history. Nothing wrong with it, it just stood out. Anyways, poor guys. Hope the workers got absorbed in some other company.
@ReservoirDog316 I got what you're saying. I still think that games are a medium that shouldn't be discouraged to mix reality and fantasy. Magic crystals, changing characters, dying over and over again are not real or possible either, but are allowed in games regardless of how realistic they try to be. Dragons are kind of okay but crabs are not. Besides, until recently giant squids were believed to be fictious too, so giant crabs could be real after all. I just like crabs...
Haha, yeah I know. In any medium, it's alright to do anything you want if it fits. I don't mind. There's a time and place for anything. Especially if it's a just fun game.
Oh, hell yeah. I adored both Genji titles. I purchased the 1st because I love Sword based Action titles and I adore Samurai and Japanese Culture. The sequel was the 1st game I purchased with my PS3. Best Buy had a sale on it for $25 and it was all I could afford since my PS3 was still $500. It was an amazing graphical showcase and kept me well entertained.
hopefully some companies will offer them work
EA will probably snatch them up.
I wish Sony does.
Sony does enjoy a close relationship with GR maybe Sony would acquire them.
i was looking forward to the 2nd Majin WTF!!!
I wanted another folklore.
Such an underrated game. Easily one of the best and unique game this gen. I really really really hope that some day we can see a new one, hopefully.
i think any ps3 rpg gamer wished the same bro :(
folklore was great majin was terrible dont understand the reviews that got, was a mess imo.
How are we gunna have games to play if this keeps happen all the time...??!!
Every month or so someone else is getting shut down. I mean, obviously there will still be video games. But I imagine it becoming more like the film industry with the sad lack of Indie films. I liked Folklore quite a bit. I don't like too many mainstream(for lack of a better word) games.
Dont worry at least you will have COD to fall back on.... ?
sorry meant to hit agree lol
Yeah, Im so sorry too. I meant to hit agree but my finger slip.
Closures and unemployment are things I hope to never see on the news feed. I wish them the best, and I'll cherish all the fun Folklore has brought me.
Well that's lame. I should replay Folklore.
FOLKLORE!!!! Noooooooo.... Well, that game is still one of the best games ever. It was slaughtered due to the new PS3 anti-hype.
I definitely remember having a blast with Folklore while reading headlines daily stating "But the PS3 has no games..." or "Will ____ save the PS3?" Too bad it was so underrated and overlooked. I hope the people from this team do well with their next job.
There goes my sequel to Folklore! Damn!
Sadly but expected! All there games sold badly, and dont even break even on the majority. The problem for me with there games was not concept or even gameplay, with was the old tech engine they used on the games. They had a weak property engine, and shoud have brought a licensed engine from another developer.Majin,Folklore,Knigh ts contract..they all have good concept along with gameplay and story but this is 2011 and the engine they were using was still 2007.Its a sad lost because i liked the way the graphics art was implanted on the gameplay in games like Majin and Folklore, and this kind of games are rare this days.
They didn't need somebody else's engine dammitt
like i state the graphics engine the were using its outdated by today standards, but the graphics art style was still beautiful and great! But not even the HD resolutions can compensate the lack of features like textures,AA,DOF....
So no trophy patch
forget about trophy patch, a sequel man, a sequel!
What a sad day :/ and press sites like Kotaku treats this like a joke
I wish Kotaku closes down...they gave nothing good to the gaming industry, such a joke of a gaming journalism site..
Well that SUCKS...!! Why such a good studio that makes great imaginary games like Folklore,Majin and Genji with enjoyable gameplay & stories shuts down while other freakin stupid studios that makes the same game over and over again with just "extra this & that",repackages it and releases it as a (new) game gets ****ing high sales ! NOT FAIR ! *EDIT* DAMN IT I WANT MY FOLKLORE 2 FIX !!! =______________=
I know what you mean. I weep a little inside everytime my roommate fawns over the next iteration COD. I even try to show him other shooters like Battlefield 3, but he doesn't even consider them. I assume this is how most of the population thinks unfortunately.
No more Folklore. I wonder why they closed. This is bad news.
.... :'( *SIGH*
I love rpgs but ive never played Folklore need to go find a copy to c what i missed
I guess I'm in the minority, but I didn't really like Folklore all that much.
I think it's the other way around. You are the majority, not many people like Folklore.
So no Folklore sequel then? *manly tears*
Oh no ! Folklore was great and Majin wasn't bad either. They definitely don't deserve this.
This is so sad, I really liked Majin, and when i bought my ps3 I used to play folklore all afternoon, I still remember how i felt when i saw the ending, and the way you had to use the sixaxis to capture the folks was so cool.
Sorry to hear this. They had some very talented people on their team. Just have to say Folklore is such an amazing game! Even though it has some obvious and very last gen design flaws, the strong parts def. out weight these. The story and combat in particular are both exceptionally well done and really draw you into the game! If you like action rpg's you owe it to yourself to go pick it up ASAP. Also, good luck to the team, hope they all find meaningful work in the industry :-)
I will remember them the most for Grandia 2 on the Dreamcast. I played the game from beginning to end in less than a weeks time when I was home from the flu. They will be missed.
