IGN: Could PS3 + PS Vita = Wii U?

Upon first glance Nintendo seems to have once again revealed an entirely new and unique way to experience videogames. The Wii U controller, with its iPad-with-buttons design and its ability to work as a companion screen to your HDTV is undoubtedly cool, at least based off the conceptual demos and trailers Nintendo teased in its press conference and on the E3 show floor.

Same here, I'm actually shocked that solid specs weren't released on the CPU/GPU side of things for the Wii U at the conference.

Not to mention the game lineup graphics so far on par with Xbox and PS3 at the moment.

I really hope they know what they are doing with that controller, like you said it seemed to be the focus. But at glance (I missed the conference) it isn't looking that impressive.

BTW PSvita is an actual console with same graphic level of HD consoles.. so you can actually go out with PSVITA and play the exact game on the go, but you cant do that with Wii U controller

Ok the reason the wii sold like crack is becuase it was cheap.. Having a screen integrated into the controller is going to drive cost up.. Not only will the console cost more but additional controllers are going to be costly... The vita on the otherhand is a standalone console that can do its own thing as well as integrate with a ps3 wich millions already own.. Sounds like nintendo is behind the ball on this one...

I have to disagree there. Technically since it is streaming the data from the console you are getting graphics from the hardware in the console, unlike the vita which has its own hardware.

BTW: Remote play streams the video from the PS3. It does not render on the device. It would actually be smarter to offload that in case for the Vita - it is fast enough to render PS3 games in 960x540 (or close to that).

because people expected more than a controller the vita is it's own system and also has two analog sticks as well as 3g meaning you can access you ps3 anywhere in the world using 3g/wifi. Unlike the U which you have to be home to use and you also to buy and whole new system to do so. Some people have just bought the wii and now the need to get another not cool. Those are just games that SUPPORT the Move, they're not built ground-up for them. That's the advantage the Wii has over the Move. For instance, Conduit's controls customization is far superior to Killzone 3's.

Everything they showed was shown in the Sony conference. Playing a game on the PS3 then transferring save to PSV to play was shown with that RPG.

I don't understand why everyone believes Nintendo when they say they are "innovating" everything.

To be fair, the industry simply improves on ideas that are already out if they can not create something completely new. If anyone thinks Kinect or Move is not an innovation, your blind, Move does 3D space with 1:1 precision, Kinect adds 3D depth to the gameplay.

Not here to argue about how useful those features are, but they are certainly innovations in their own rights.

Stop pretending that only Nintendo innovates.

EDIT: Not to mention the PSV has a REAR touch pad, hello innovation. Not to mention Six-Axis control, which Nintendo COPIED with Motion Plus, adding the additional two axis, again, Nintendo uses others ideas, much like Sony and MS do. Sometimes they even improve on those ideas.

Adding to HeavenlySnipes list and confirming his last point about multiple screens, in Formula One 06 for the PS3, you could use the PSP as a rear view mirror. So if using a portable device as a gameplay element for a game on a home console was possible with the psp, then it should be damn easy with the PSV. Thus, this proves that there was no innovation from Nintendo this year.

Sony already showed multiple games where content can be shared between PS3 and PSV. They also showed being able to race against others on PSV or PS3 with wip3out. Then they also demoed going from playing a game on PSv to PS3 with the one diablo-esque game.

Not to say that Sony and Microsoft don't copy Nintendo, but a lot of what Wii U showed was also showed already with PSVita.

I'm not sure if PSVita will be an "expensive version" of this since Wii U seems to be tied to a whole new console launch, which could cost $299 or more at release.

I'm interested to see who leverages this technology the best, but I'm not going to declare someone the winner when its obvious both are completely new and trying to do as much as possible.

Yeah, but PSVita is a ton more than a controller. It's a portable gaming device that isn't limited to being near the Wii U, it can play all the media that PSP can, it can be connected anywhere with 3G, and it allows you to take your games with you digitally.

Yes, vita can share content with the ps3, but that is a feature... something it can do if that feature is available. the wiiu controller was designed specifically for that purpose, not as a feature.

you wont get a vita bundled with a ps3 and sold as a competitor to wiiu.. as i said its just too expensive. so vita and ps3 is not competition with wiiu. stop pretending like vita is all of a sudden the answer to wiiu, its not. its a completely different species.

wiiu will use the technology the best because it only exists for that use. with vita its just an extra feature, devs wont necessarily use its interface abilities with ps3. on the flip side wiiu will always interface with wiiu console, so its use will always be pushed in interesting and innovative ways.

thats why its silly to compare vita/ps3 with the U. psp is a portable games console/media device. U is a home console. just because the controller resembles a handheld doesn't mean its in competition with vita or comparable... its a controller!

i think it will take people a while to get their head around the idea, im still not sure if i like it. but i think nintendo know what they are doing. i think its the first real step towards a marriage between home and portable gaming.

i think the next gen of computers will be like tablets, nintendo are clever to create this wiiu system, its like a bridge to that generation. i mean, why have a handheld console and a home console, when you can have one that fulfils both needs.

you can stream any ps1 games and minis to the psp and you can also stream lair a ps3 game and some psn titles as well. You can also stream music,videos and pictures stored on you HDD and your not limited to your home. You can be in china and all you'd have to do is find a wifi connection. The main issue though was that for ps2 and ps3 games you needed another analog the vita has that now so it would only make since to evolve. look it up on youtube if you doubt this.

Sony I want you emphasize your abilities with remote play more with the Vita. You have the capability to steal a bit of Nintendo's thunder. The only thing that you are missing are the second L and R buttons on the Vita, but the can easily be worked around with capabilities of a touch screen.

Think about this and show it off at TGS or Gamescon (whichever is first).

So hold on, Sony creates a nice piece of hardware, shows it off, lets you play it, demonstrates what it can do and Nintendo show us what MIGHT be possible with their future console.
Gamers like other consumers judge what they see, Sony has something , Nintendo MIGHT have something. To have a reveal with virtually no reveal is poor on Nintendo's part. Releasing no tech specs, no real hardware on show and with the console out next year. They should have had something more concrete to go on (you know, performance etc), at the moment they are selling everyone an idea, not a product.

To wrap this whole thing up. I'm sure that the PS3 and Vita can and will work together in ways similar to the Wii U. Why is that a problem? Why can't two company have similar features in their hardware? Don't all three systems have rumble features? Don't all three system use analog sticks? Don't all three systems use motion controls?

It's immature and selfish to try and hold onto new technology for yourself. Nintendo knew what Sony was up to before they announced the Vita and Sony knew what Nintendo was up to before they announced the Wii U. Who knows, maybe Sony can do it better. That doesn't take any quality away from playing a Star Fox game on the Wii U where I can use the controller to look all around space in a 360 degree view to shoot ships down. I'll use the PS3/V combo for Sony stuff and the Wii U for Nintendo stuff. Simple as that.

As people know I am no Sony fan. With that being said here is what I think about the wii U thing.

First, is going to cost an arm an a leg, why? because Nintendo over price everything and this peace of hardware is expensive to make.

2nd, this is a "controller" that means that though you can hold in your hand it's NOT portable. you still need to be near the wii to use it which makes it NOT a handheld. Now, will you pay the $200-$300 to play in a small screen when you can buy a monitor or tv and put it in a room where no one bothers you? I understand that it brings more to the table in terms of some new ways to play minigames like that start ninja thing.

The PS Vita is a complete handheld that without doubt will be used as the current PSP with the PS3. It has touch capabilities and it can be used without having to be near the console.

Hell I don't think it should even be compared after all it's just a controller.

I also believe is a drastic change from Nintendo, it's almost as if they now moving back to traditional ways to play the games and away from motion which I think is a great thing.

The Wii U is an expansion on a Sony idea. It's a really good expansion, but it's still an expansion. Remote Play on PSP has allowed me do many of the things shown today, and Vita will allow the rest to be done, including Move integration.

But if we're going to be particular, SEGA were probably the true innovators.

TBH the Wii-U is a rip off of the first psp :S. The original PSP can actually do most of the things the wii-U can and the PSV can do 90% of what was showcased the wii-U can do and probably more if Sony said hey why not the tech is there. Until than, Vita might already be established, SW will be written by Sony, and, maybe even new specs of a PS3 follow up will be available. Did Nintendo forget to show the glassless 3D ability of the Wii U controller? Cause seriously its so predictable that its gonna have that feature. The Wii U will have be abilityto play 3D games on a 3DTV (thats obvious due to the existance of the 3DS) but obviously the controller must also have 3D capabilities if its able to do remote play.

Yes which is one way Sony kinda trumped Nintendo with the PS3 - PSV connectivity. Flowing your game from PSV to PS3 is a show stopper. With all the touch functions back and front just makes the PSV almost limitless.

Plus the PSV is actually mobile so it's much more.

im still waiting for the PSP to be able to act as a secondary controller/screen for the PS3 - remember, that was announced BEFORE the launch of the PS3 and it STILL hasnt happened.

First of off nintendo has been doing handheld/console connection for since the game game so to say sony is innovating with this is silly.2nd of all why are you guys compairing a remote to a handheld gameing device? really guys so vita is in compation with a control how silly does that sound? vita cant do anything the U remote can noting uno why? its not a controller simple as that if you bough the psp2 to use as a controller then theres some problems that u guys needs to get soaked in your heads. the WII u is the wii u noting is like it and the vita is the vita they both do diffrent things and ones a home consol and ones not and when i see vita able to interact with videos that other ppl are watching on the ps3 then maybe ya guys can speak and when u guys say it does more? what do u mean more? that useless rear touch pad? really thats not even needed at all just seems to be tacked on and 2 cameras? the 3ds has 3 and the dsi has 2 cameras so yeah oh and? the remote of the wii u has video calling i mean come on a controlling to have video calls? just admit it this thing is pritty sweet and u have to admit it

they should be integrated. you can play a game on PS3 whole the vita can be the map/inventory/scoreboard. I really hope sony implements these ideas with their touchscreen.
