Kinect Support In ME3: Has EA/Bioware Gone Too Far?

Geek Revolt writes "Yesterday it was reported that Bioware might add Kinect support to Mass Effect 3, a decision that could cause a slight uproar among gamers. “If” this rumor turns out to be true—has EA/Bioware gone too far in their pursuit of selling more copies of ME3?"

HOW?! How the heck is adding Kinect support going too far?

The kinect support IS OPTIONAL.

You DO NOT have to use it. It's brilliant that they're adding the option. They should add optional kinect/ PS Move with as many games as they can so long the interface actually works.

The fact that it will have Kinect (if the rumor is true) is not a bad thing because nobody is forcing you to play it on Kinect. Play it with a controller if you want to. People really need to stop s***ing themselves about this information.

green4712d ago

From E3 09 when Microsoft announced that there will be Kinect hybrid games, Mass Effect was the 1st game that sprang to mind that IMO would greatly benefit from this addition.

When you play Mass Effect you have to constantly press the RB to bring up the weapon wheel in order for you to select a weapon or Biotic power. This pauses the game and breaks the flow of what should be seamless combat. It's not Biowares fault, its just that there are no other buttons to press on the controller.

Kinect would be great in the sense that you are using your standard controller and to use force push, lift, stasis or warp could all be done with one hand gestures.

IMO it would help the combat of the game greatly so i have to say i completely disagree with this article.

tehpees34712d ago

so even when 360 owners get a game worth playing on kinect you still get somewhere complaining?

theIMP4712d ago

To be honest if they just used the mike in Kinect (which work pretty damn well if you ask me) to be able to get through the conversations would be bad a$$ as far as I’m concerned. I would be very happy with just that option.

TBM4712d ago

Personally I don't need any of the motion stuff for this game. To me it seems pointless.

gamingdroid4712d ago (Edited 4712d ago )

I don't know what the crying is all about, but the fact is that people complained about Kinect in this order:

a) doesn't work
b) then it was, no games
c) then it was no quality games
d) then it was no hardcore games
e) then it was, it is pointless and takes away resources from perfecting controller based games

See where this is going? See who is complaining on an optional feature?

Apart from that, imagine if you could say "Normandy fly to Citadel!"

LocO_o4712d ago (Edited 4712d ago )

I think the uproar is coming from the fact that Kinect support has practiclly been confirmed but no word on Move support yet.

If you think about it MS and Bioware have a good relationship so this would not surprise me.

On the other hand Sony and EA have a good realtionship so Move support is a possible, unless Kinect is implemented in a way that Move cant.

Edit: Say anthing anti Sony and you get many disagrees. I own a PS3 and a 360 but my PS3 is my go to console and love it to death so need to think I am bashing Sony.

Machioto4712d ago (Edited 4712d ago )

I’m pretty sure the first part of your statement isn't why people are upset,I think kinect implementation isn't bad but what can they do to enhance the experience other than a gimmick, psmove seems better because it can be comparable to a mouse.

suicidalblues4712d ago (Edited 4712d ago )

@LocO

Totally agree. Even though I think that Move is overall the better interface between the two, if they can use hand gestures for the speech and weapon wheel that'd be cool- and something that using Move for wouldn't make sense because you'd still have to pick up a controller.

But that would go against the "you are the controller" slogan. I wonder if MS will let the hybrid be as easy as we're thinking?

Just_The_Truth4711d ago (Edited 4711d ago )

i do hope you realise i'll most likely just be voice control(which the pseye can do) or a separate mini game.

Solidus187-SCMilk4712d ago

It would be cool if you could punch that reporter lady with the kinnect.

Tony P4712d ago

Actually, I think some articles go too far with their overzealous headlines.

darksied4712d ago

Exactly. I despise the Kinect myself, but as long as it doesn't interfere with my PC experience, I could care less what the 360 version is doing.

Come to think of it, couldn't they then put in Move support? It's basically a shooter with RPG elements, I think the move would be a better choice, no?

How do you move forward with the Kinect?

GameOn4712d ago (Edited 4712d ago )

with the analogue.... Your not another one of those people who cant think beyond the "you are the controller, pew pew" are you?

Breadisgood4712d ago

I agree, it's hilarious how people actually get worked up about things like this concerning Kinect.

If you don't have Kinect, then I don't see how this is going to affect you in any way. If you do then it's a nice little bonus for you.

theIMP4712d ago

They care because it's MS and anything MS has got to suck on this site. It's as simple as that.

MagicAccent4712d ago (Edited 4712d ago )

Well said.
If people want to flail around like idiots while trying to save the galaxy, it's 'their' choice.

I can imagine it now:

Garrus: Come on, Shepard!

Kinect gamer(aka Shepeard): *panting* Let's wait here a second. We have to... Check our medi gel or something.

Garrus: *sigh*

videoxgamexfanboy4712d ago (Edited 4712d ago )

lmao bubbles for the laugh @magicaccent

KingZFlipper4712d ago

@Kran I definitely agree with you. Many titles like ME3 should add kinect/move to it's support. It doesn't need to be like "You have to use kinect or move", it's just needs to be optional. I think developers should do more things like bioware might do.

wiggles4712d ago

The author has the worst straw man argument ever. How is working with an innovative technology in a hardcore game ever bad? It only opens the doors to further the gaming experience.

Even if it turns out just to be used for hacking mini games, or for menu navigation, and OPTIONAL then only good can come from it.

I would much rather see an established giant developer take a risk on a new technology or stray from their roots because they have the luxury. A smaller developer could get on the map with a successful new implementation of RPG's or using Kinect in a hard core game, but the risk is so much. Bioware has the money and the knowledge to back up Kinect in ME3, and to reshape the genre, there is no reason to stop them.

VampiricDragon4712d ago

as long as its optional its not too far.

If it wasnt then yes

Fishy Fingers4712d ago

It wont be integral to the experience, dont see what the fuss is about.

death2smoochie4712d ago (Edited 4712d ago )

How is this bad if its an OPTIONAL feature?
Good grief.

Looks like we have the usual disagree kinect monster running about in every Kinect thread pushing the disagree button for anything Kinect related LOL

BioWare Could be Working on More than Just Dragon Age Dreadwolf and Mass Effect 4

Earlier this year, BioWare was hit with layoffs as part of a downsizing of parent company Electronic Arts, but fans have been reassured that the next Mass Effect game hasn’t been impacted. Likewise, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’s development is still churning along, with BioWare putting it at the forefront of its focus and rumors suggesting that it could launch sometime later this year. Fans might be getting another look at the long-in-development Dragon Age: Dreadwolf at the Summer Game Fest in June.

If the recently posted job offering for a temporary development manager is any indication, BioWare could have yet another surprise up its sleeve for when Mass Effect 4 and Dragon Age: Dreadwolf are nearing completion. This mystery BioWare video game could truly be anything, from another spin-off of its two major properties to something entirely new. All there is to go on at the moment is a vague mention in the job posting, and it might still be some time before BioWare is ready to confirm any new games in its pipeline.

So a studio that spent years on anthem then this dragon age thing is now also working on another ip along with mass effect,

You think they would be worried that there brand has been on 3 major screw ups

Dragon age 3 launched broken with the frostbite engine yes its a good game but you can see in the late game how rough it was

anthem......

Mass effect 4 well that dev team was fired so yeah.....

They should make sure this new dragon age is a goat instead of putting more work on the table

bababooiy24d ago

Bioware today is like 150 poeple i dont see how they are seemingly working on all these projects at the same time.

Michiel198924d ago

Inquisition wasn't broken, it just had some flaws and on the contrary it also had some strengths. If you call inquisition a major screw up then idk what to say.

That said with what happened to the study since then and now, I'm not really confident that their next game will be any good.

just_looken24d ago

If you played it fully to get plat like me back in its novemeber launch window you had that castle with empty area's endgame missions not there or working and a mp that was made around loot box grind like the mass effect mp.

Its hard to explain to those that played it years later after they tossed out the dlc/patch's

Michiel198924d ago

entitled much? I played it at launch too. Why you even platted it if it was a "major screw up"?
It was good enough for you to sink 100 hours in but also a complete fuckup at the same time, make up your mind.
So either you like shitty games or you're just talking out of your ass.

RaidenBlack24d ago

Well just wanna say, Archetype Entertainment is the new BioWare, composed of mainly ex-BioWare vets.
And they're developing Exodus (starring Matthew McConaughey), a new sci-fi RPG (spiritual successor to Mass Effect, dare I say?)

CantThinkOfAUsername24d ago

I hope it's a single player game with Anthem's gameplay mechanics.

Becuzisaid24d ago

They're owned by EA. What makes you think that they wouldn't publish for PS5? Shoot, if your fridge could connect to your bank account EA would try to release it for that if they could!

Double_O_Revan25d ago

How about they focus on those games and not over extend themselves? We don't need another Anthem.

Becuzisaid24d ago

Bioware died after Inquisition (some would even argue after ME3). They are no longer the same company.

I wonder what the next buzz word they'll slap in front of AI to make it sound exciting next? "Generative" as if it's creating its own content. Lol.

Cacabunga50d ago

EA is already dying a painful death..

peppeaccardo50d ago

i have a better idea .. why the whole exec team doesn't get replaced by chat bots ?

just_looken50d ago

Though i agree the ai thing is already in other forms of media there have been ai translations/scripts/voice over and even full ai commercials aired on tv. Ubisoft has created a ai game creator story/vo/music except the building of the game

The new unreal engine has auto terrain creation tools

In the world of greed in which it is winning without any major blow back ai is our future.

everyone want's biden dead on the mic or a criminal instead of a woman and now we are getting ai everything because no one will stop watching/playing ai created media.

GamerRN50d ago

Maybe they should just focus on making good games?

Just a thought...

Kiryu199249d ago

Exactly EA are just pure evil. When they are beating Bank of America to be voted the worst company to work for that’s saying a lot

Good thing I don’t buy their games day one and wait for deep deep sale years after launch (the select few games I am actually interested in)

Gaming is making so much money yet the greed of these companies is never ending

CEO’s and people on board making millions yet cutting jobs to those who are actually making the products

EA is still a shady shitty company even with or without the help of Skynet. All they will use AI for is new ways to milk loot boxes and come up with the same sports title with a different year on the label. They are one company I truly do hate with a passion. They single handedly ruined some great franchise with their death touch. ME, Dead Space, Alice Returns, Dante's Inferno.

EA layoffs followed by 'Generative AI to Drive Monetization'

I knew it. Wonder what AI salary looks like? Nothing.

ChasterMies50d ago

I having a feeling that most of the layoffs in the industry are based on the idea that AI will do the same job for less.

DarXyde49d ago

Very likely, yes.

Made worse by the fact that the execs aren't changing their compensations.

My deepest fear at this point is that we are now in the capitalism endgame.

At this point, we really should just burn AI to the ground. Executives cannot be trusted to do the right thing.
How are those people expected to support families if everything gets automated?

Barlos50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

And take away creativity, and people's jobs as we've been seeing. Got it.

No thanks. I want my games created by people, not AI.

CobraKai50d ago

Exactly. If or when games start becoming more AI than people, im done with gaming. AI and companies like EA can suck donkey d***k.

just_looken50d ago

Though i agree remember this is no ps3/360 era were we got up to 3 games in one generation from on developer like gears/halo/bioware/sony/ms

The people today are pro esg/sweet baby for the most part AAA gaming is imploding right now.

We should be stepping back re evaluate everything as a whole this year xmen 97 written/directed by a woman that is nuts and its also being made by a group reshaping bodies to be less sexual like wtf. A dam famous cartoon from the 90's is being rebuilt with millions spent to be worse in everyway.

Gaming/movies/tv shows made today are worse than what we had 7years ago ai won't change this but that ai is also being made by these groups so either way we are screwed.
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Eonjay49d ago

Don't be of afraid of women. Sexy characters in games and movies still exist. Got my Stellar Blade on preorder!!! Everything all the time doesn't need to be sexual...that's stupid, childish and dull.

Chocoburger50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

EA doesn't want to lose their title of worst gaming company ever, always trying their best to remain the champs!
What's sad is that they have so much potential to be a decent publisher.

SSX Tricky / SSX 3
Def Jam Vendetta / Fight for New York
NBA Street
NFL Steet
Mirror's Edge
Bad Company
Burnout 3 / 4 / 5

Remember when EA used to be awesome? It's all over with now. Unpolished, if not out-right broken games these days. Endless monetization and gambling in their sports games, and let's not forget wasting hours of your life trying to unlock characters or equipment using "surprise boxes!"
