Are you playing L.A. Noire in black and white?

You might miss it if you don't know to look for it, but right there in the options for L.A. Noire you can activate a "black and white mode." The resulting look is reminiscent of the classic films the game attempts to emulate.

I was. Up until I was told to find the guy in the red shirt and got into more car chases that were hard enough to manage without being visually limited. Many of the visual cues when tailing people are also done with color (yellow dress + red bag, for example).

It's a very cool feature to have with the game, just didn't work in certain situations and it was easier and just as enjoyable to keep color turned on.

I don't mind watching black and white movies, but I could never imagine playing a game in black and white. If the game is made in HD graphics and color, I don't want to miss any of the details.

It worked well in The Saboteur, only there were splashes of color, such as red.

At least until you started progressing in the game.

does it hide all the jaggies and terrible shadows, i should have tried it, already returned it, i hated the game...don't bite my head off, just me opinion, got dead space 2 instead, I'm halfway through so i figured i'd give it a go to finish it

Returning mine next week, overrated...eight cases left but I'm having to force myself to endure the repetitive on-rails 'action', so obviously not my thing.
If it was a film I'd be a straight-to-DVD. Getting Dirt3 instead.

I kind of figured that people would bore of this game quickly. It is a good game, but I think half the gamers that bought this imagined it to be a police style GTA.

I didn't get it cause' I was worried about replay value after finishing it once or twice.

Doesn't sound like it has any free-roaming options, so I figure I'll just wait for a price drop. $30 range.

I happen to be a really big fan of Law and Order, and I remember Dick Wolf (the producer) wanted NBC to air it in black and white. The execs at NBC kind of looked at him like his head was attached incorrectly and said "We'll make the suggestion," as a polite way to tell him to f-off, they weren't running their best new show in black and white.

The result though was a gritty filter with a blue tinge. LA Noire looks almost like it has been run through a brown filter, and if there are colour-based cues for tailing leads, the black and white kind of ruins things, huh?

I'm currently playing with the B/W option OFF.

I'll likely switch it ON after I finish the intial storylines and go back.

I'm doing my second playthrough on it. Actually very cool, and the character models don't look as plastic-y in it either

I would, but I felt that the color pallete was limited. I would have liked for it to be richer. Its hard to explain but when movie directors film for black in white they choose colors and textures that they know will translate wonderfully to B&W. so as to not bore the audience with just the same shades of gray. Also different much more dramatic camera angles would be required, think the opening scene while you are making your selections in the game.
Those kinds of shots hold interest.

The B&W option in L.A.Noire just seems like an after thought and nowhere near the level of thought that something like that would require.

Its cute and all but not very well implements.
