PS4 and Xbox 720 only in 2014

A few days ago a rumor that circulated stated that Nintendo is planning on announcing a new games console that will be the heir to the Wii and will be released in 2012. Now, industry sources claim that Sony and Microsoft are not planning on joining Nintendo any time soon.

That's because they don't need to

I'm pretty sure Sony and Microsoft haven't made enough returns yet from their current consoles to just move on to the next one putting them back into a lot of debt again.

Nintendo can do it because they've sold every single one of their consoles for a profit this whole generation.

Not only that, they're trying to kick off their next console before people start to lose interest in their current ones. Basically trying to keep the flow of income steady instead of heading into a slump as each console does near the end of their life.

PS3 and 360 on the other hand still have at least 3 more years of life left, especially now that the Wii 2 will be in the same league as them but slightly stronger. This will help prolong multiplatform development for this current generation.

You will see next xbox very soon. Probably fall 2012, at latest 2013. Keep in mind that it doesn't mean then will stop selling 360 and Kinect. Same goes for PS4.
Personally I can't wait for next xbox. It will be my first MS console.

I'm sure that microsoft has made enough returns as the xbox is fairly cheaply made as consoles go so their returns have been big. Sony on the other hand haven't because the ps3 only became profitable last year because of the expenses of making them

The main problem I see with releasing next gen consoles is that developers won't be able to keep up.

Many studios are still unable to cope with the high production costs for HD games. Especially on the Japanese side, which is why so many of them rather make games for the Wii or handhelds instead.

The only way I can see it working is if next-gen isn't as focused on advancing graphics as this gen was.

Maybe the big 3 will be focusing on developing user-friendly innovative control systems that surpass even this generation's motion controllers instead.

But I'm also hoping they really focus on creating online communities. Shouldn't be that hard to create forums or public chatrooms for people to use, while making it really accessible and easy to use.

This is MS...remember that phone they released..marketed it like crazy then killed it off 3 months later. If the next wii eats into their userbase rest assured they will release something new.

@Rock Lee

The reason why they its costing so much to make these games for the ps3 and 360 is because they are trying to make these gorgeous games but they keep wasting their time porting from pc dev kits to the obsolete hardware. So much time optimizing the little bit of RAM these machines have. Plus the gpus are way outdated. If they had more RAM and better gpu's, it would take no time to make these games and port them, just like its gonna take to port games from the ps3 to the NGP. The longer they wait to start next gen, the more money they are gonna lose. Especially Sony. They would at least be in the black if they charged for the psn. And that is a fact.

wsoutlaw872722d ago

@rabidpancakeburglar they make money off of software sales too (and blu ray sales for that matter) though not just the consoles. I would expect Xbox in 2013 and ps3 in 2014. The sooner they come out, the sooner we get better games and price cuts. I just hope they wait for the future tech available that will at least last 5 years.

I don't think the PS3 needs a new gen yet, but the 360 is kinda grasping at straws atm. They're trying to squeeze every little bit of disc space out of the dvd as they can... their tech is, from the looks of it, going to be the worst of the 3 soon..

I still say

NES 6 E3 2011
Xbox 3 E3 2011/2012
PS4 E3 2012

Argue all you want, but that is 99% most likely scenario.

New console or not. Kinect, and Move both are likely going to be 100% compatible with their next generation SKUs.

As well as PS3 and X360 still being sold for another 5-7 years in the stores. They will be the bargain brand console like the Wii will be to the NES 6. And the PS2 to the PS3. Its just the way things are going. Certainly room in the market for 2 high/low branded consoles to live.

Yeah, I'm hoping there's no new generation of console until 2014 because right now I'm not feeling the need to upgrade. The systems are pretty good right now.

fluffydelusions2722d ago (Edited 2722d ago )

Lol no way MS is waiting till 2014. Sony I could see but not MS especially with them trying to eat into the casual market.

dirthurts2722d ago

PC gaming is looking better and better with this dated hardware.

MysticStrummer2722d ago

Been there. Done that. No thanks.

tdogchristy902722d ago

I feel 2012 (kinect/move just releasing, splitting the fan base) is to soon and 2014 a little late. 2013 please

fluffydelusions2722d ago

Kinect is just a USB device...

tdogchristy902722d ago

I know this. But think about all the people that bought a 360 because of kinect, and judging by sales data that's a lot. I just feel like you'd really be splitting the fan base by releasing too soon.
