Whatever happened to Half-Life 2: Part Three?

DOG: id Software may have almost single-handedly invented the first-person shooter as we now know it, but it was Valve's Half-Life that inarguably made the genre into a platform for atmospheric storytelling.

I think everybody has been asking that question for 4 years now.

Therealspy034901d ago

I think they've secretly been working on a new engine and a new half life. and they will probably do an Episode 3 to showcase new tech before announcing an actual sequel. OR, Episode 3 will be the final send off for the Source engine.

RankFTW4901d ago

As soon as Valve announce a new engine I get my wallet out for new graphics card.

conjurdevil4902d ago

Episode 3 not PART 3 that makes it sound like a lame sequel which is far from what half life 2 episodes have been!

Lamarthedancer4902d ago (Edited 4902d ago )

I think it will become HL3 by the time it comes out. I only think Valve still refer to it as Episode 3 because thats what we know it as, it's not like their going to spoil anything they have planned.

They have to show it off at E3 this year, I don't think I'm the only Valve fan when I say I don't give a shit about DOTA2. Would Valve really just give out some info for a PC game only at a big gaming event like E3.....I don't think they would waste E3 on DOTA2.

TheMysterion4901d ago

I say they've been holding off to continue the story with Portal 1&2. They need certain things to happen in those games for them to connect and further the half life story. I say we see episode 3 next with chell in it

Lamarthedancer4901d ago

Hopefully she'll talk in it if she's present

I don't mind mute characters but for Chell being in her situation in Portal 2 she didn't want to talk once. Erik Wolpaw said she could but it's because she was annoyed and didn't want to give those around her the satisfaction.

Hopefully if she is in HL3 she will be able to continue her adventure in Portal 3

Raendom4902d ago

I bet the next iteration of Source (if it'll even be called Source) will launch alongside Half-Life 3.

SuperLupe4901d ago

I think Valve are simply exaggerating, come on 4 years for an add on !?

Kingdom Come4901d ago

The episodes were quite lengthy, and there have been rumours that we'll be recieving a full-blown sequel...

STONEY44901d ago (Edited 4901d ago )

EP 1 was 3-4 hours, EP 2 was about 6. HL2 was 20. Modern games are around 6. Pretty good for an "add on", considering we get 1 hour $10 DLC all the time which just reuses locations in the game.

I'm thinking Episode 3 will be a lot longer considering the time we've been waiting. I don't think it'll beat Half-Life 2s 20 hour story, but it should be long.

PainisCupcake4901d ago

Exactly expecting a "episode" after nearly 4 years is daft. It probably will be called episode 3 but after all this time id expect a game perhaps half as long or 2/3 as HL2.

Silent Hills cancellation was a travesty.

mrbearbear429d ago

I still wonder to this day if it was a reboot, or sequel.

cammers1995430d ago

Lol. The tags made it so I didn't have to visit your website.

goldwyncq429d ago

Kojima wouldn't have started his own studio if Silent Hills didn't get cancelled so even if it stung at first, I'm fine with it.

chobit_A5HL3Y429d ago

i remember being so excited for patriots for years, only to have them release that siege trash. i hate how multiplayer games, pvp in particular, have ruined so many potentially good games.

15 Years Ago This Month, Valve Announced Half-Life 2: Episode 3

Zack Zwiezen writes, "It seems like just yesterday when Valve announced a trilogy of expansions for their super-popular PC game, 2004's Half-Life 2. But it’s actually been 15 years since Episode 3 was announced. And while Valve has since released a new Half-Life game, it wasn’t the one the developer announced back in 2006."

Orchard1211d ago

Still hurts a little that we didn’t get Ep3… and the “leaked” plans for it sounded like a great finale to the HL2 story arc.

-Foxtrot1211d ago

It sounded fantastic and it's a shame we'll never get that

The ending of Half Life Alyx and what it did basically put the nail in the coffin for those plans.

Fntastic1211d ago

Whatever they release next i hope it's not catered to consoles first. Back 4 Blood seems to be going that route by having automatic flashlights, but i have high hopes Valve won't water down any games as they are usually released on PC way earlier, like HL2 and HLA.

CrimsonWing691209d ago (Edited 1209d ago )

Man, I wish I played Half-Life 2 when it first came out so I could love it like the fans do.

I played it on Xbox 360 and I thought it was ok. I recognize it set a standard for a lot of things like physics in game and story-telling in an FPS, but I think by the time I played it the design had been improved upon by other games.

5 Vaporware Games We’d Like to Finally See Released in 2018

Agent Vaporware is a term used for software and games that are announced, but never released or cancelled. Essentially stuck in limbo due to development hell, lack of communication to the public, or pushed aside for other, more lucrative projects. Here are five long-awaited games we would like to see released this year.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 will be a PS5 title. Not happening this gen.

jay22404d ago

Beyond 2 shouldbt be on that list, its coming.

Fist4achin2404d ago

Ahh, HL 3, the unicorn,... I wish, but I don't see any more coming from valve.

clockworkerr0r2403d ago

I love the Vaporwave aesthetic, and I would definitely love to see a lot of these games come out soon. I think my favorite out of the list was Agent. Something about this style combined with the Cold War Spy setting really makes me want to try it out. Since it's from the makers of GTA, I'm sure it would be fun, and it would be interesting to see their take on an espionage game. Even if we don't get any of these games this year, I'm still pretty excited for some of the confirmed releases. One that I'm really looking forward to is Nova Nukers. It's a competitive multiplayer that has a lot of really interesting weapons that effect the game's environment, and a unique spherical stage design. I think it's going to be a really interesting game since it's doing a lot that I haven't seen in a multiplayer before.

I don't want Agent.....I just want a spy game...doesn't have to be agent but we don't really any any good ones to play.

* Create an agent....pick an agency to start at....do espionage and missions against other agencies and stuff.
