The PSN Outage Is Proof That More Single Player Games Are Needed

There was a time that game developers focused more on the single player campaign more than on the multiplayer side. The focus has been reversed as now we increasingly see robust multiplayer modes coupled with very short and linear single player campaign.

I think Nether realms did a great job on the MK story. But he does have a point most games are from going point a to point b.

velocitygamer5165d ago (Edited 5165d ago )

Ever since the PSN outage from Thursday, I moved onto finishing Fallout New Vegas and LittleBigPlanet 2. But yeah, we do need more single player games.

@Blitz
Yeah, there are a lot of single player games. But the fact that these days, developers are spending more time on the multiplayer than the single player, then in the end-result, single player games are often shorter. For example, Killzone 3. Guerilla Games made one heck of a single player, but they ended up with a shorter campaign than Killzone 2, you know why? Because they focused on the multiplayer more. I'm not trying to sound crazy, it's just that online activities play a BIG role in gaming nowadays. Mainly because you can make new friends and play together as a TEAM.

blitz06235165d ago

Are you serious? There are a lot of excellent SP games out there. People are just addicted to online FPS and other online activities that when taken off from them they go f*ckin crazy. Find something else to do, the PS3 isn't just an online console. Watch a bluray or something, geez. It's unbelievable how this outage is such a big deal. There are tons of stuff to do even when not signed in. I'm nearing the end of Portal 2. Do I actually need to go online and tell my friends about it?

thats_just_prime5165d ago

more like proof that you should be playing on an xbox.

MysticStrummer5165d ago

@that's_just_prime - No thank you, though I'm not sure how this is proof that gaming should be done on 360, since XBL goes down at times also and has been down for a longer period of time than this.

T-K47x5165d ago

Not really theres more than enough to be honest, the title should be the PSN outage is proof that people dont have enough patient. You could pick something up like Oblivion dirt cheap now and you would get more than enough to last you.

Nitrowolf25165d ago

yeah, i think there are tons of Single player games out there especiailly PS3 exclusives. I think out of all of them 3 of them don't have SP which are MAG, DC Universe (i think???) and Warhawk.

Other then that we got games like Uncharted, God of War, MGS4, Infamous, GT5, Killzone, little big planet, and then the multiplats which we have an so many of.

There plenty of Single player games to finish

MysticStrummer5165d ago

Some people don't want to play single player games. I know a girl who plays almost exclusively online. She kicks ass in UC2, but she didn't like the story much at all. She got RDR to play online with me, but still hasn't played through the story. I've been enjoying SOCOM 4 and Portal 2 offline while PSN is down, but all she wants to do is play MAG. I'm jonesing for MAG too, and would love to play some online S4, but I still enjoy a good offline game as well.

Raven_Nomad5165d ago

If you cant sign in, you cant unlock trophies and the like right? I am not 100% sure but I was going to play through a game and it wouldn't let me sign in, so I didn't want to play through a game and get nothing...

Infernostew5165d ago (Edited 5165d ago )

You can still unlock trophies. You just can't sync them which doesn't really matter since there's no one to see your trophies if you're not online.

Nitrowolf25165d ago

you can get trophies offline.
I'm shock to know you didn't know that
but yes they still unlock unless they are online specific ones (get 5 kills in a rank match, In online Co-op, ect, ect)

Raven_Nomad5165d ago

Well honestly I don't play PS3 often, but the other day I was going to finish playing through God Of War 3 on the highest difficulty and it wouldn't let me sign in.

I have like 10 PSN's and one is my main one, so I wasn't sure if my main account would get it or what?

wenaldy5165d ago

Only apply on sync feature...

DirtyLary5165d ago

Who cares about stupid trophies. Some of us play games cause we enjoy them, we don't need carrots to chase.

It's sad what gaming has become for some kids.

Raven_Nomad5165d ago

Definitely not a kid, I would guess I'm older then you, but like getting Airline miles, it adds extra incentives to playing games.

I grew up with the NES, Atari 2600 ect.. So I realize that Achievements are more of a luxury, but I find myself unable to play through new games without them.

Guess we will have to agree to disagree on the subject.

MysticStrummer5165d ago

@Raven_Nomad - I grew up with the 2600 and even had a console before that, though I can't remember the name, but I see Trophies and Achievements as cheap ways for developers to make people think they're getting more content when they're actually getting less.

drosera15165d ago

Well said brother, i couldn't agree more. I grew up with the NES and Sega Megadrive, so am an adult gamer, and i couldn't care less about online or trophies. I play games to be immersed and have fun, NOT to get "killstreaks" and crap like that.

There are plenty of awesome single player games. Hell, I've been playing more single player games than multiplayer games lately, even when PSN was up, and that includes my 360 and PC too. The only multiplayer I've been playing lately was NHL 11 Hockey League. I've been busy with single player, and in single player games I don't have to deal with muting everyone, headset DJ's, people who think they're gangsters, little kids, and countless other annoyances.

Cancer Patient Gets Actually Flown Out First Class By Gearbox To Play Borderlands 4

Cancer patient Caleb McAlpine has received VIP treatment from Gearbox Software, following official acknowledgement of his story.

gold_drake196d ago

im glad he got to enjoy whatever they had prepared for him

Vits196d ago

Gearbox has a lot of problems, but one thing they’ve consistently done right is showing appreciation for their fans. Immortalizing Michael Mamaril in the second game was genuinely cool and so is this.

Demetrius196d ago

I remember rockstar doing the same thing with red dead 2 I think, that's dope, also shows that us guys just want to sit back have a great time on gems we enjoy

Skate-AK195d ago

Good thing they went the extra mile and flew him out. We all know about Randy and his love of webcams.

GotGame818195d ago (Edited 195d ago )

"gets actually" is now acceptable, and published? Wow! Actually gets, is how it should read. I have been reading more and more stories everywhere that are grammatical incorrect. BTW, I thank God for spell check. My spelling is awful. Great news though!

stoney101195d ago

The 'actually' isn't required at all.
