The Fable Series Needs A Break

I hate to make such a blatant attack against any video game franchise, but the Fable series holds a spot near and dear to my heart. I remember walking into EB Games when the first advertisements for Fable came around, proudly declaring that players would be able to do anything and go just about anywhere; boasting the ability to shape a character's future in ways that no one has ever dreamed of when it comes to player customization and interactivity. It sounded almost too good to be true. A smooth combination of open world combat and questing that would progressively craft a character who reflects the player's choices.

Fable, for all of its faults, was a relative success. Sure it didn't meet many of the promises that were laid out by its developers, nor were a few of the ideas that were supposed to be in the final product ever brought to light, but the fact remains that Fable was a success that would eventually herald a sequel, and that's when things began to make a turn for the worst.

i'll second that. in some ways it seems Fable III took a step backwards from II.

I personally loved Fable 3, but I do agree that the series needs a break. RPGs aren't games you can bring out every 2 years and expect to make huge steps forward.

fable doesnt need a break. its not like its final fantasy or anything.

what it does need is better character design, more freedom, enhanced battle system, and better storyline.

basically the game is a piece of shit. every installation its getting worst and worst.

peter monoleux better stop the 'get rich quick scheme' and start putting some serious effort into his works.

if he cant figure out what went wrong with fable 3. than he's just dumb. but i highly doubt this was the case.

I want him to make Justice and Survivor, the concepts and ideas for those two games were awesome. I would be happy if he made B&W for 360.

Are you serious? How many Killzone, Uncharted, Resistance, and Motorstorm games are here/coming again? If the number 3 is considered milking, then consider 3 of these newly created current gen IPs milked or getting milked.

NOthing against these games, as I'd play most of them all day, but lets not act like Microsoft is the only putting out frequent sequels to popular franchises.

They do that because of gamers... The try to do new things, but then gamers reject new games, and new modes of play. So the big game houses stick with tried and true formulas.

On the otherhand it does create a nitch for indy game devs.

Maybe Molyneux will actually be able to deliver one day. I just hate how before the game releases, he says it's fantastic. Then, after it launches, he says in hindsight, it wasn't that great.

My true main problem with fable 2 is that teh world wasn't engaging enough, the dog was a bad gimmick and hell yeah it was buggy .

I am waiting on Fable 3 until it is $20 on GamesOnDemand, because it didn't appear to pass my "I'd shuffle the DVD for this game" test...

Although I eventually want to play it...

Huh? Best adventure game to date. Besides Zelda, what other games is as big and adventurous as the Fable series? The music, the humor, the size, etc... Love games that have real virtual worlds; villages where you see people working, kids going to school, etc... I cant think of any other game that matches Fable.

The point the guy is making is if the series doesn't take a break, more than likely only its hardcore fans are going to be picking up later games in the series. That soon after that, the series will die altogether.

It not Zelda, its fart jokes. You may believe it or not but people do get tired of fart jokes.

I was under the impression that only hardcore fans were buying the series in the first place. I'd think that something drastic would have to happen to this series in order for it to potentially expand its fan base. And that could do more harm than good. If people keep buying, then they may as well keep making. Its working for a lot of other games.

I dont see why people dont like fable i have liked all 3 ok there not what peter makes them out to be but after playing alot of his games you know there never quite what he makes them out to be but i would not say any fable games were bad and they are far from it. I really hope they bring back black and white this year and make it use kinect for its controls as it think this would work very well for this type of game and i know alot of people have been asking for a 3rd black and white for a long time.

They are still amazing games no the less. maybe he can one day do everything he wants in a game, and when that game comes. we will all reach omniongameofness.

LOL Fable is great one of the best series out there. If you dont like it dont play it. There really is nothing like its sim/rpg/humour gameplay. Its one of my fav series and one of the best rpgs imho. I think part 2 was the best but 3 did make it more fluid, more beautiful, and added a great story but it needs the rpg elements of 1 and 2. 3 was more fun to play though. The dog is one of the best elements, man fable is a great gaming franchise.

Its not a bad thing if the games keep getting better and being good im fine with those milks.

Uncharted is going for 3 and i can take more 20.

The problem is not so much with Fable but with Peter M.

I’m a huge fan of the guy, but He has made it quite clear in the past that for all his critical success he feels has not delivered a true blockbuster game. He’s looking at the numbers of Mario, Halo, GTA, and Call of Duty and that’s what he wants.

Both he and Lionhead have been dumbing down, or as Bioware put it “stream lining” Fable to appeal to the widest demographic possible. Yet it’s not really bringing in new players and alienating Fable’s exiting fanbase. It’s your typical case of design by committee.

I hope Peter finds the success he’s looking for. I just don’t think the RPG genre is suitable for the kind of numbers he’s looking to move. (Unless you’re game is called Zelda).

Fable definitely has it's stand out moments. I believe if Peter made it feel less linear (more open world) people would really like it much better.
