Peter Molyneux: "Fable 3 was fractured" "I'd never exclude any type of game"

Sam Clay for @XG247: Firstly, I’d like to make a mention of congratulations to Peter Molyneux for picking up the Lifetime Achievement Award from those lovely people at BAFTA, he fully deserved it. Peter has changed the way the industry makes games and make us UK gamers even more proud to be British. Oh, and we love chickens too.

We grabbed a word with the ‘King of Gaming’ himself at this year’s BAFTAs...

Stealth20k5207d ago

and before it was the best rpg ever..........

just shut up

Titanz5207d ago

The two other games where, xd.

Trevonn5207d ago

change the quote from the article because i dont feel proud after i bought that overnight complete trash known as fable 2 give him credit for whatever he did in the past but in the last decade he has had no game changers at ALL and King on gaming? erm Shigeru Miyamoto rings (coming from sony fan)

"Peter has changed the way the industry makes games"

Really?

LightofDarkness5207d ago

Yes, the design ethos of many development houses and their associated PR guys has changed to "DDWPMD," or "Don't Do What Peter Molyneux Does". It is clear to see which developers have adopted the philosophy and especially clear to see those who haven't (Crytek).

palaeomerus5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

Flying Carpet, Syndicate, Populous....ARE YOU DENSE OR SOMETHING?

Raven_Nomad5207d ago

I enjoyed Fable 3, maybe not as much as Fable 2, but when your at the top, nowhere to go but down. Remember that when much anticipated sequel games come out later this year.

Anyway, this guy is a dreamer and is exactly what the industry needs. Sure he's made promises and not kept all of them due to hardware or software limitations, but no matter what platform your a fan of, I'm sure you've been lied to plenty by your companies people at one time or another.

Peter makes people think of the impossible, even if you cant quite get there, he has you thinking outside the box. I've enjoyed all the Fable games and cant wait to see what they have in store for next time.

No game that ranks in the 80's and sells millions of copies should be considered a failure, but I'm glad he is always wanting to improve and listening to people's feedback...

Godmars2905207d ago

Sorry, but the man has made promises and not kept them, by recent self admission, because he pulled ideas out of nowhere just to make for an interesting interview.

True the industry needs dreamers, but it need ones who carries them out. Not just spout ideas out for the sake of quote value.

Raven_Nomad5207d ago

ya, quote value like 4-D graphics and Backwards compatibility?

Everyone in the business world lies or stretches the truth for one reason or another, not everything promised and then not delivered is a lie however, sometimes as I said earlier it's because of the restrictions on Hardware/software.

The guy is a true genius IMO and I don't really care who agree's or disagree's. At least he is trying and taking chances, more then I can say for 75% of the industry right now.

Convas5207d ago

Tut Tut Raven shame on you! You forgot that we'd also have games on a certain platform, all running in glorious 1080p HD and at 60 FPS.

Face it Godmars, there's been a hell of a lot of empty promises and false hopes this generation.

Let's not be too hard on Peter M.

Godmars2905207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

But there's a difference between a company spouting PR pap and catchphrases trying to make them stick to multiple projects, and a developer doing the same while a game he's making is in production. That difference is connection.

As lead developer Molyneux has a responsibility to deliver in part or in whole on the quotes he's made. And so far the man's failed on at least two counts.

The man *was* a genius in the early PC era, set the basis for certain generas, but today he's quickly becoming a hack. Only has himself to blame because he's not living up to what he's saying. He's certainly not taking chances you say/think he is.

@Clizzz:
Agreed. There's much about this console generation that's empty and stagnant. Mostly because it was started too early and without direction when such was obviously needed in the move from SD to HD. Both the 360 and PS3 have failed on major points.

However, much of that doesn't change the fact that Molyneux has set himself up as a poster boy for the current state of the industry because he opens his mouth yet doesn't deliver. Cliffy B and Jaffe are others of course, but again they have produced.

Peter Molyneux recalls how Project Milo, the Kinect game with revolutionary promise, died a death

Vapourware can end up being the stuff of legend, like Rockstar's Agent, Star Wars 1313, or StarCraft: Ghost. Without ever seeing the light of day, these games never risked the possibility of being played and forgotten, and instead live on forever as the subjects of lengthy YouTube essays.

Still, Molyneux's most notable lost game (or tech demo, depending on who you asked at the time) was arguably Project Milo.

I can see the potential of the kinect hardware... its rather impressive tech, but it was just not meant to be for gaming. If anything, MS had a huge missed opportunity to have used it for the AR/VR projects.

S2Killinit26d ago

Missed opportunity? They lied. It was the biggest lie in gaming history.

merlox26d ago

You can use the Kinect as an SLS camera for paranormal investigations. So it wasn’t a complete failure.

Cacabunga26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

Remember Star Wars Kinect announcement? Biggest laughable acting seen

It was built on lies Peter...you know this.

isarai27d ago

Bro that thing NEVER existed, what we got was a concept video

Knushwood Butt27d ago

"Unfortunately, as we were developing Milo, so the Kinect device was being developed. And they realised that the device that Alex Kipman first showed off would cost $5,000 for consumers to buy.

"So they cost-reduced that device down to such a point, where the field-of-view...I think it was a minuscule field-of-view. In other words, it could only just see what's straight in front of you."

Hmm, exactly what tech was in it, that was cut, affected the development? It was only ever interpreting visual and audio inputs right? The xbox was processing those inputs.

Nor do I see how the field of view thing is relevant to the discussion.

isarai27d ago

Exactly! Tf kinda BS statement was that? i don't really see how fov is relevant at all, since when do you move all around a room while talking/interacting to someone?

Amplitude26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

This is entirely untrue. There was never a 5000 dollar Kinect prototype that could somehow use a wider field of view to scan and import generated in-game items and advance AI by over a decade. Anybody that fell for this was a stupid moron child, myself included. Anybody that falls for this lie now is a stupid moron child who doesn't realize that these people *only* know how to lie.

Is It Time To Trust Peter Molyneux Again?

Masters of Albion is already promising, but can we trust Peter Molyneux to not let us down again?

I came here to say that I don't want to hear any grand standing or over promises, and I was not left disappointed when I read: "Molyneux has “kept very quiet” about the project as he wanted to “let the game speak for itself”.

Perfect.

Cacabunga301d ago

Milo and Kate 😆
Stellar lie

DivineHand125301d ago

Project Milo could not have been released even if it existed. Why would a grown man want to simulate talking to young kids?

Profchaos301d ago

No he hasn't done anything to earn it if he actually delivers a fun competent game that's different

DiRtY301d ago

Come on, you can hate him for overpromising, but he made some fun games.
Fable I and II were awesome, as was theme park or Dungeon Keeper.

OldDuffer300d ago

Unfortunately its the haters who will always set the agenda on any such discussion. Peter is a visionary who delivered some exceptional games and invented genres. I consider myself blessed to have worked at Bullfrog and seen such creativity up close. The fact he over promissed on several projects later in his career is hardly an issue limited to just him, and certainly does not undo the huge legacy he has.
I was impressed by the showing at the event, and Im pleased to see he's learnt to shutup and just deliver a game. Maybe one two people can let go of the hate if he delivers on this project, but I doubt it - people love to hate.

CrimsonIdol300d ago

Amen. I respect Peter as a dreamer of interesting and grand ideas. Those who remember the golden years of Bullfrog knows how interesting their games were (and still remain) and the glorious feel of manipulating all the little simulation mechanics. If you understand many of his promises were "wouldn't it be cool if" hypotheticals that were strived for but ultimately not achieved (ie the realities of game dev) it makes far more sense than him being deliberately misleading.

Psychonaut85301d ago

No. Too many other developers who HAVEN’T scammed people and lied to our face for two decades. Don’t have time to listen to this dude anymore. If it’s good, good for those people that like that type of game. I still won’t ever trust him.

Plague-Doctor27301d ago

One of the dumbest questions I've ever heard. Guy hasn't told the truth in over 20 years

DodoDojo301d ago

Exactly, the dude likes to suck his own D and talk everything up.

Psychonaut85298d ago

I’m curious who the dislikes are on our comments. Either people old enough to have some deeeeeeep love for Black and White and Populous, or young enough to not know what a massive huckster Molyneux is. He’s the M.Night Shyamalan of game directors. Did a couple good things early on and somehow has managed to ride that for decades.

Peter Molyneux's new game is set in Fable's Albion

Project currently codenamed MOAT.

JusttJD0099614d ago

M.O.A.T

Misleader of all time?

jznrpg614d ago (Edited 614d ago )

It’s between him and Phil. I’d vote Phil

Obscure_Observer613d ago

"It’s between him and Phil. I’d vote Phil"

If Phil were the man that made my life miserable, I would vote for him as well.

Regarding the topic, it could be both Peter and Phil working together.

M.O.A.T takes place in Albion, so it´s possible that Pete is working on new partnership with Xbox, which imo, is nothing but great news!

GhostScholar613d ago

What exactly has Phil mislead about? I can’t wait to hear the verbal diarrhea you come with.

Cacabunga613d ago

Still waiting for Milo and Kate.. most lmao game OAT

Becuzisaid614d ago

Wait.

His name is still used as a selling point for new games? Seriously?

jznrpg614d ago

If anyone knows his name you have to be extremely skeptical that what he delivers will be anything like what he says it would be and that’s best case scenario.

RaiderNation614d ago

He's like the "Tom Clancy" of video games.

InUrFoxHole614d ago

Lol what the hell man?!?!?

ZycoFox614d ago

I remember Black & White (PC) but other than that I can only think of Fable, B&W was a pretty cool game tho at the time.

sagapo614d ago

Populous was another one designed by Peter, released before B&W, godlike game as well, pretty good too.

Giblet_Head614d ago

I quite liked Magic Carpet growing up.

Obscure_Observer613d ago (Edited 613d ago )

"His name is still used as a selling point for new games? Seriously?"

The guy is a gaming legend for gamers who actually knows and played his games, like Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Black & White and Fable for example.

Becuzisaid613d ago

I'm certain that most who actually know who he is would contest your use of legend. He's the living, human embodiment of false advertising.

Obscure_Observer613d ago

@Becuzisaid

There´s an abyss between false advertisement and bad games.

Most gamers will get excited for games from great gaming creators rather than focus on their exaggerated promises.

Kojima described his Xbox exclusive game as "very unusual like no one has ever experienced before, leveraging the cloud." He said all publishers he presented the project, called him mad and rejected his game but Microsoft, because it´s too crazy.

Is Kojima exaggerating? Obviously. It´s gonna be a bad game? Hardly.

Imagine a game where Peter Molyneux presents an extraordinary set of ideas that players will enjoy for years to come. Now imagine that this particular game will come out because it will never exist.

Profchaos614d ago

Does Milo live under a bridge there

shinoff2183614d ago

Captain overseller is returning. Ain't heard his name in years.

Peter was overselling games way way before cdprojectred, and bethesada
