GDC 2011: David Jaffe Feels Boot-up Times On Console Games Are Too Long

Speaking at a panel at GDC, David Jaffe not only talked about how he felt games had too many updates and day one updates shouldn't be needed -- he also talked about how he feels games take forever to get you into them. He said that from the second you put the game in the console to when you actually start playing it takes way too long.

I agree totally, Sony should listen to this man, especially about the sleep mode.

MoeThirteen5232d ago

The continue option I can get behind. Also I'm not hating on the makers of the game, but I don't see why your logo needs so much time on my screen especially if there are a lot of chefs in the kitchen. I just wanna play.

Rocker27915232d ago (Edited 5232d ago )

Console boot ups are actually the reason I favor PC gaming. With the PC, if I want to play a game, I make maybe two clicks and BAM I'm in the game. With the console I have to boot the console, navigate the dashboard, then sit through the game sponsor screens, and finally wait for the game to load.

As Jaffe mentioned Brotherhood, I am reminded why I stopped playing the multiplayer in the first place. It just took too long to get into a match and get the game going. This is something that I love about games like Black Ops for instance. I can boot up the multiplayer exe and from there if I have my classes set up all I have to do is pick a server and I'm in.

BISHOP-BRASIL5232d ago

Hummm... Not. You can just turn auto start on, so you just put the disc in and the game starts. You still have to watch developers and engine tools logos, but you have to watch it on PC too unless you are messing with database stuff (i.e. not the way it were designed to be used).

And actually, some of the worst boot up times on recent games are from PC games. Just look at anything Maxis. The matter have little to do with platform. The discussion is about devs putting way too much stuff between you and the game.

xDSJxPyro5232d ago

While load times are getting a bit longer it seems, games like Grand Theft Auto IV are a thing of beauty. I remember dreading the bridge crossing in previous games. I hated those load zones.

Now with the ability to install HDD, they are getting better, but with things like Blu-ray which have low read speed for the time being at least, I don't really mind it.

MGRogue20175232d ago (Edited 5232d ago )

Call of Duty Black Ops loads up pretty damn fast..

It's amazing how you can get into a full-on MP firefight & be playing within minutes..

CaptainMarvelQ85232d ago (Edited 5232d ago )

yes, because a century old eninge with low quality graphics and simple mechanics take no time time load on this generation's consoles

NeloAnjelo5229d ago

COD will die if this ever happens, as it's a patch fest. This is why this, which Jaffe proposes won't happen.

I appreciate the article but this guy must be living in a delayed universe, The reputation was ruined 10+ years ago and hasn't recovered since. As such people have voted with their wallets and stopped buying Xbox products in large amounts.

YourMommySpoils23h ago

Their reputation was lost way before that. From the moment Microsoft said they entering the console business, we all knew it would be a downgrade.

Bathyj9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

That's not true at all the OG Xbox had drive and they had hunger and they wanted to accomplish something. It was a great console.

they didn't quite reach their goals and they gave up prematurely because they couldn't win. It was halfway through the Xbox 360 when kinect released and that was when they lost their way and we're a rudderless ship ever since

Agent756h ago

In all fairness, Xbox had some great games with online play, Xbox 360 even better. Xbox consoles started to die with the Xbox One. Ditch consoles for the PC and PS.

What reputation is this threatening exactly? 😂

Rumors of Turn 10 being either shut down or hit with massive lay offs is on the horizon.

The issue is MS will do something right only to do something very, very wrong. And they do this what seems calculative at this point. Doesn't matter what they do the Investors and leadership want more and more money an endless bottomless pit of purr insatiable greed. A company that acts like it's broke or hurting is what really, really infuriates me. They've surpassed apple again well over 3 trillion who acts like they're a million dollar company is fk stupid. Pivots and changes for no reason and can't do things for more than a year with out a pivot or changing their metrics.

Christopher1d 3h ago

That would be really bad since Phil just hyped up next year as a big Forza year at Summer Game Fest.

@christopher: “ That would be really bad since Phil just hyped up next year as a big Forza year at Summer Game Fest”
The key word big can be ether good or bad 🤷🏿only time can tell

DarXyde1d 1h ago

First Forza being generated entirely via AI?

If any company would do it, it'd be them.

Nacho_Z14h ago

Isn't the point that it's irrelevant how profitable MS is, the suits have decided it's time that the Xbox division started making them money. Hence the layoffs, the pivots.

hennessey869h ago

That wouldn't surprise me, as motorsport has been heading down hill since the great number 4. Where as playground have consistently put out better games. I think the two studios will be merged under playground games banner.

The 'Stop Killing Games' initiative is close to its final deadline

Ross Scott—also known as Accursed Farms on YouTube—has been fighting tooth and nail for almost a full year to help spearhead game preservation. Starting after it was announced that Ubisoft's The Crew would be shutting down, permanently ending support for the game, Scott launched the "Stop Killing Games" initiative.

That makes a twofold deadline for the Stop Killing Games initiative. Or, at least, one headed up by Scott: The UK petition, which ends July 14, and the EU Citizens' Initiative, which ends July 3.

People whine and in the end don't do a thing. Then whine more when they get screwed some more smh. If this makes it then it'll be monumental for consumers. That Pirate software guy was no help either smh.

The EU Date is the 31st July not the 3rd

"Players can now hide system apps, pin favorites to the list, and reduce the number of tiles displayed. This update is part of our ongoing effort to make Home more personal, flexible, and responsive to feedback."

This is welcomed, i like a less cluttered home screen.

Well anything that adds and help gamers is a good thing even if some don’t need it there’ll be more that will use it.

darthv725d ago

Well its MS news... those are usually pretty dry, unless it has something to do with another game being ported to PS. then its top of the pops.

Oh look no further than the "Upcoming layoffs at MS" topic. It will easily top the Hottest of the week.

Special guests like Mr. Dead might also show up. You just watch.
