There is a forgotten hero of the vast Nintendo universe, and his name is Mike Jones.

Released in 1990 for the NES, Star Tropics was a blatant attempt at a Japanese developer trying to make a game that appealed to an American audience. Perhaps this became a renewed interest due to Nintendo’s financial holdings with the Seattle Mariners… or perhaps it was a cost-effective solution to an increasingly global market for video games. Regardless, Star Tropics took the action-RPG staples of The Legend of Zelda and wrapped them in the cozy values of the Red, White, and Blue. The end result is a fantastic romp through some parallel universe, where Yo-Yos are weapons of war, baseball bats bring a swift end to dyspeptic cobras, and the treasure you seek is no fantastical crystal or shard of light but your favorite Uncle, kidnapped while on vacation.
