Edge Sony NGP hands-on: 'Best ever handheld thumbsticks'

Respected gaming bible Edge has published its hands-on Sony NGP impressions - and it has tall praise for the PSP successor.

"Based on our hands-on time with the device following the presentation in Tokyo, we can confirm that Sony's 'Next Generation Portable' feels considerably larger than previous PSP models," the mag writes, adding that the lack in pocket friendliness is a "fair trade-off for the spectacular five-inch OLED display".

Maybe if PSP2 goes at a good price, EDGE (and other sites/mags) won't hold a pointless grudge for 5 years and they'll start treating the Playstation brand with respect.

actually im always pissed off when they make a game for such a device when it could have look so much better on a console...

One game doesn't make up for the fact that they've scored nearly 90% of the PS3 exclusive library 7/10 or lower, while they've scored nearly 90% of the Xbox 360 exclusive library 9/10 or higher.

It's practically mathematically impossible for 90% of a consoles exclusive library to suck that bad, or be that awesome.

The point people are trying to make isn't that the Xbox 360 library is being over-scored (although some games ARE), but that the PS3 library is being under-scored.

I think Xbox 360 titles like Gears of War, Halo: Reach, and Alan Wake deserve praise. They are great games.

I also think that PS3 titles like inFAMOUS, Ratchet and Clank, and God of War 3 deserve praise, as they are great games as well.

Edge seems to think that the best the PS3 has to offer, excepting Uncharted and LittleBigPlanet, is CRAP.

Resistance, Killzone 2, inFAMOUS, Motorstorm, Ratchet, Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, MGS4, etc, are the showpiece titles of the PS3, and yet Edge routinely shits on them for reasons/excuses that they NEVER apply to multi-platform titles, or 360 exclusives that may suffer from the same issues.

None of us thinks that every PS3 exclusive game is perfect. We just want credit where it's due.

There has yet to be an action game that matches the scale and technical wizardry of God of War 3, and yet it gets trashed by Edge. Killzone 2 and 3 are unlike ANY of the cookie cutter military FPS titles saturating the market, and yet Edge routinely calls it "generic" and "bland."

The truth is, the PS3 will NEVER be good enough to Edge, in the same way that the Xbox 360 will NEVER bee good enough for a rabid fanboy.

I own a PS3 AND 360. I enjoy both of them. I play my PS3 more, but that doesn't mean the 360 doesn't have any worthwhile games. I'm just not into Halo and Gears of War or Forza (I've played all 3, but they aren't my thing).

I have the Mass Effects and Alan Wake and Fables, as well as some multi-plats like Fallout: New Vegas, but not much else. I'm looking to expand my 360 library with more than multi-plats, but Microsoft is being mum on ANYTHING they may have that's not Kinect related. I'm taking a wait and see attitude for the most part, but in the mean time, I'm enjoying the glut of PS3 exclusives hitting the machine this year.

Edge lost it's credibility ages ago. It doesn't matter to me if they score the odd PS3 game a 9/10 or 10/10, when they overwhelming nitpick and downscore the bulk of the library.

Picture in your head EVERY single game that you consider awesome. Now picture that Edge scored every single one of your favorite games 6/10, and for nitpicky reasons (game length, no MP, shallow story, etc). WHY, would you still go to that web site for gaming reviews, when it's obvious that you have different views of games?

It's amusing to me that we can, with near 100% accuracy, predict what Edge will score upcoming PS3 exclusives. That's sad. It's as sad as being able to predict that G4TV will score a game 4/5 or 5/5 nearly 90% of the time. That's just as bad as Edge's under-scoring.

I think Nintendo continued the pocket gamer sized, after their early stint in 'Game and Watch' years ago. They got it right with the DS. The XL was a better version but still, the games are mainstream and appeal to the masses with lovely bright colours and simple things to keep the attention happy.

Sony took the Gamegear route of a proper handheld. That was a nice sized portable Sega system. Shame the battery was very short lived and the screen? Blow on them and they broke. I remember working at Toys r us and the amount of repair jobs in those days.

I'd include the Atari Lynx but that was close to being one full sized mofo. Hold that for a few minutes each day and you'd have wrists like Arnie weeks later.

The NGP looks like my kind of system and it has gamers appeal. I would point out that I do think the DS is a gamers system but not in the same style of gaming.
I just can't imagine a Killzone type DS game unless people will class Metroid in the same category.

I'll end up getting both though, so I'll win each way.

the single worst part of the psp was that awful analog nub thing, i had one of the psp tomb raider games, and it was horrible to play because of that stupid nub.
other games have been ruined by that thing as well.
