Brilliant game, story (2 separate character plots), game-play, and graphics for a launch title. AND it had the oh-so-mighty online component too. There was a PSP sequel/ continuation but we never got that over here.

I think they shelved the series after that :( BUT the IP is still kicking around, so there's always hope. That same desperate hope that has me yearning for a Legend of Dragoon sequel one day.

Folklore is actually SO good, best use of motion controls this generation (IMO). Great story, great character development, great gameplay, great everything!

Disappointed that there's no sequel planned, but nevertheless I enjoyed it while it lasted.

they received unanimous positive reviews, in fact many people consider Demon's Souls one of the best (if not the best) games of this generation

Underrated applies to everyones opinion. It is not confined to publications or journalists. Most of us at N4G know that some reviewers are full of shit and are not to be taken seriously. But hey, that goes for most reviewers. Games are hard to detail on a point scale. Some love certain games, while others love the opposite. I used underrated as all all-encompassing term. I'm simply listing the games that I FELT did not acquire their deserved recognition.

But hey, even still. Lets go along with your definition of underrated. Demon's Souls has an 8.9 average and Valkyria Chronicles has a 8.6. THOSE ARE ABSOLUTELY UNDERRATED! If you disagree and feel those scores are justified, keep in mind this is an OPINION PIECE.

I'm not saying low sales = underrated but that game had bad sales and it didn't get the scores it deserved. I just played all the Sly games on PS2 when they first came out and I already have nostalgia for the series. I'm going to be pissed if Sly 4 doesn't get made because of bad sales for The Sly Collection.

I agree. Folklore is so awesome. One of my favorite games of the entire generation, easily, no question about it. I have such fond memories of it. Beautiful graphics, addictive gameplay, great imagination, interesting story, it was just awesome.

I'm playing Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom now, actually. Same developer. It's pretty good, but not as good as Folklore.

Folklore will always have a special place in my heart. Its because of that game that I almost always buy Japanese developed PS3 exclusives in hopes that I will find something just as memorable. There is just something so humble about that game. I love it.

Warhawk is the number 1 underrated game on PS3 full stop! I agree with the list but Warhawk is probably the best multiplayer game on any console this generation.
I was on the Beta for it in June 2007 and I still play it now. Great game and one of my all time favourites.

Same here man. Got my PS3 for Christmas 2007 from blockbuster and it came bundled with Folklore (lucky). Brilliant game. From that list, I also own Demons Souls, MAG and Valkyria Chronicles and what I've played of them, they a too are incredibly underrated.

Had Demons Souls a week now and finally got the chance to sit down and play it properly today. Going through the first dungeon and dying about 6 times, finally finish it felt so rewarding. If the game continues the way the first hour has been...well...this could end up being one of my favorite games ever. It's fantastic.

This spot on the list should have gone to Warhawk. This was a relatively early released game that was somewhat rushed out as a MP only game.

Warhawk would have pawned all others -- and gotten the recognition and huge fanbase -- had it been a FPS, with "Modern Warfare" environments, kit, weapons and vehicles.

Yet, it still is the best online shooter on the consoles...and I've played Halo, BC, MW, Resistance, KZ.

Calling All Cars was one of the first PSN downloadable titles, and was a BLAST. The graphics were simple but brilliant, and the gameplay was crazy addictive.

It should have done much better sales-wise but due the the crummy PSN interface back in those days it pretty much got buried and forgotten. For the longest time the only way to find it was in the alphabetical master games list...it wasn't listed in ANY of the game sub-categories. That is what doomed it. It was as if Sony went out of their way to hide it.

The fact that you never heard of it says it all. Sony screwed up royally. It really was and still is a fantastic little game.

Folklore is still one of my favorite games of this generation.

It had absolutely AMAZING art design and music. It felt like a whimsical Jim Henson movie. Maybe mixed with a bit of early Tim Burton stuff.

It was such a breath of fresh air when it released, and it still is today. The game play was unique and actually utilized the SixAxis controls really well.

I'd love to see SCEJ and Game Republic produce another Folklore title on the PSP2. Maybe the franchise will get the credit it deserved.

2007 was a shameful time, in that the gaming media had their heads so far up their asses with their vitriol spewing hatred of everything Sony, that instead of giving quality games the respect they deserved, they were too busy punishing them for daring to release on the much hated PS3.

Resistance, Motorstorm, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Folklore, and Ratchet and Clank Future: TOD were treated to some of the most nitpicky, straw-grasping "reviews" I've ever seen in my 31 years. The only game that managed to weather some of the hate was Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, but then again, it was still nitpicked for not having multi-player, and for only being 9-10 hours long (nevermind that the then exclusive Xbox 360 critical darling Bioshock wasn't nitpicked for not having multi-player and for being 9-10 hours long).

Of course, anyone that owned a PS3 back in 2007, and managed to weather the media hate, enjoyed some really great games in 2007 (add Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Virtua Fighter 5, and Unreal Tournament 3 to the list also). It was only those that were pissed at the $600 price tag that had to find a way to justify why they couldn't have a PS3 ("it has no games," "all the game suck," "it's not Halo or Gears of War," etc, etc).

What that had to do with the quality of the software was beyond me. But it amazes me how now that franchises like Folklore and Heavenly Sword are effectively dead, the same media that shit on them want to praise them as "underappreciated gems." Hypocrisy at it's finest.

Heavenly Sword sold over 1 million units, and yet it didn't get a sequel. That's amazing to me. Worse selling games have gotten sequels. Give these franchises a second chance on the PSP2 and I'll forgive the BS of 2007. Actually, no, I won't. But hey, at least I'd get a sequel to two genuinely quality games that were snuffed out by a bunch of bitter, jaded fanboys that somehow managed to weasel their way into the gaming media.

I bought a 60 GB at launch and remember the way things were back then quite well. It was amazing to me that so many were still saying "...but it has no games!" or "will ___ save the PS3?" even after Ratchet and Uncharted were released. Uncharted was often dismissed as "Dude Raider," but it was probably my favorite PS3 game up to that point. I thought it had massive potential as a franchise, which was often marginalized and laughed at. I wonder if those doubters would like to revisit that debate now? I'm not sure I've ever seen a console so unjustifiably trashed the way the PS3 was back in the early days following it's launch. You would have thought it was worse than the Phillips CD-i if all you knew about it was from the media coverage. I was pretty happy with it back in the Resistance: FOM days, and it was great by the time Ratchet and Uncharted were released. It's had quite a turnaround regarding public opinion.

My year one of the PS3 was a blast.

I picked up Resistance (when I bought my PS3 in February 2007), then I got Virtua Fighter 5, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, The Darkness, Warhawk (was addicted to that, and it single handedly showed me the potential of the PSN as a multi-player service), Heavenly Sword, Folklore, Ratchet: TOD, Uncharted: DF, Unreal Tournament 3, and a few more multi-plats that were solid, and some PSN titles like Calling All Cars and Flow.

The PSN had a LOT of growing to do, but the PS3 lineup for that first year was hardly shit. I had a great time with it.

The PS3 doesn't get the credit it deserves for steadily adding new features over it's four years thus far.

I mean, I remember when there was no 3D Support, no Video Store, no PS1 classics, barely any downloadable titles, no in game Cross Media Bar, etc, etc. How many new, and FREE features have been added to the 360? I own a 360, but most of the features are locked to a Gold subscription.

I'd like to watch Netflix on my 360, and yet I have to pay for Xbox LIVE. Why? I'm already paying for Netflix, and my internet connection, and now I have to pay for LIVE too? So I watch Netflix on the PS3 and computer.

People think PS3 fans are just playing the victim, but the media's hate for the PS3 console extended to the PS3 fanbase as well. How many times were PS3 fans called "Sony Sheep," "stupid," and "fanatics" for supporting the PS3? By the gaming PRESS, not just the Xbox 360 fanboys.

Look at the archives of N4G circa 2007-late 2008. It was a fricking PS fan bloodbath. You couldn't have a single normal conversation about the PS3 without it turning into a flame war, and the gaming press ENCOURAGED this behavior. After all, it was driving hits to their sites when the latest "PS3 is DOOOOMED" article was published.

They are the prime offenders in shaping the current gaming culture we have. This generation has seen an obscene amount of spiteful, vindictive, bitter, jaded, spoiled, entitled gamers I've EVER seen. The pressure they have placed on developers is unreal. They expect every developer to somehow deliver something fresh and new EVERY SINGLE GAME. It says a LOT about the developer's determination to do their jobs and support their families that they haven't just said "Fuck you all," and call it a day. I certainly wouldn't blame them.

In either case, the PS3 has proven itself over and over again, and those same ostracized and ridiculed PS3 fans are having the last year. This years gaming lineup is looking to shame the PS3 lineups of 2008, 2009, and 2010, and those three years were FANTASTIC. I can't wait.

I bought the PS3 that I still use for 600 more than four years ago

the 360 was 400 back then, but to use it online it's 50 dollars a year, so to have the 360 and have played online from 2006 to the present it costs 600 dollars

but with the PS3 you also get the best blu ray player on the market, and even if you buy a good one now it would be around 200, so that's like 800 with a 360 to being able to do what PS3 offered for 600

to talk about value to have to do a little math

and the PS3 line up for the first year was incredible, you just needed to see through the lies on the gaming media, Uncharted 1 is just as good as the second in the gameplay and story, the first resistance still has the best single player of any FPS this gen, and there's more great games like warhawk, folklore, ratchet and clank, siren and many more

to pass opinon on those games you need to have actually played them, what you read about them on the media are lies

How is it revisionist history? It's not conspiracy. That's exactly what happened. For some fucked up reason, people wanted to see Sony fall from the top. They wanted to see Sony and the PS3 as their whipping boy.

This generation of gaming has housed the most disgraceful ostracization of a single console I have ever seen. PS3's "sad" first year consisted of: MotorStorm, Resistance, Uncharted, Warhawk, Folklore, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank. That is a pretty solid EXCLUSIVE lineup if you ask me. The only people complaining about the price of the PS3 were those who couldn't afford it, and the really, REALLY short-sighted ones.

Take Xbox 360 + every year of XBL Gold and that easily surpasses the price of a launch PS3 - that's even without the Blu-ray player. I laugh at people who use that pathetic excuse. This sort of behaviour has actually changed gamers' expectations for the worse. Journalists are reviewing PS3 games to a higher standard and nitpicking whereEVER they can. Why? Because of how the PS3 has been treated over the past few years. They are biased and inconsistent with their views.

Articles in the news... "Can _____ save the PS3?", "Do exclusives matter?" These questions are stupidly rhetorical. This is by far the worst generation of gaming that has ever been, and it's not down to the games (they are excellent)... it's the behaviour of these ignorant fanboy loyalists and the pathetic news sites that are only out for their own bias.

Folklore is a game I really I should give a chance. I remember playing the demo a few years ago, but I've forgotten how it played really. Some day I'll have to try it.

The only PS3 exclusive that wasn't under appreciated by gamers (in terms of sales) was Haze. Fable II sells 5 mill, my GF LOVED it but she has no interest in Fable 3...or games any more besides stuff like bubble sweeper(or whatever it's called, it's pretty much bust-A-move iPhone)

Casuals are unreliable, by the time MS and Nintendo realize it will be too late. Quick bucks, long term suicide both of them.

Oh yeah, I forgot to comment on White Knight Chronicles in my epic rants above. lol.

WKC was a great, addictive JRPG. The story was absurd, and I think intentionally tongue in cheek cliche, but the game play systems at work were GREAT.

I loved the battle system. I loved the crafting. I loved the town building, and I loved playing with a few of my buddies completing quests and gaining Guild Rank, which opened up more options for crafting. It really did feel like a single player MMO to me.

I'm actually replaying it right now, and I'm reminded of how enjoyable the game was.

The graphics are also under-appreciated. Character models are solid, but the environments are beautiful, especially the water effects. It's a surprisingly detailed JRPG. People shit on the PS3's JRPG line-up, but it's really well represented with some unique titles that don't fit the standard JRPG mold.

Demon's Souls came out of NOWHERE and wowed those that gave it a shot. I remember seeing game play trailers and thinking "Man, that looks clunky and slow, and not fun." I usually don't go by reviews for ANYTHING these days, but when this game, that was wholly ignored and criticized for looking "unfun" by the gaming media, started getting 9/10 scores, I was like, "Hmm, something odd is going on here. Could this be Mercenaries all over again?"

I found the Chinese/English import version for $46 at the game story across the street from my house, and my MOM, of all people, bought it for me (imagine, a then 29 year old man getting a video game bought for him by his mom, but hey, I'M not going to turn away a free game. lol), and I fell in love.

The trailers and videos did NOTHING for this game. I remember watching some Justin TV live streams, and the folks playing it were simply TERRIBLE. They kept running into the battles, swinging wildly, when DS is one of the most tactical action/rpgs I've ever played. Those live streams made the game look HORRIBLE!

I've only beaten it once, and I've yet to get the English version (I eventually traded in the Chinese import), but I just recently borrowed it from a friend and reminded myself why that game is the absolute definition of a "Sleeper Hit."

I'm looking forward to the spiritual successor, Dark Souls, and then a TRUE SEQUEL to Demon's Souls in the future. What a great franchise. I hope the 360 community enjoys Dark Souls if it's as good as DS. It was a truly unique and fresh game compared to the glut of MP shooters.

Most of the PS3 lineup is under-appreciated at the time, being nitpicked, but Demon's Souls shocked EVERYONE, because people's expectations weren't astronomically high. If Demon's Souls was as hyped as Killzone 2, then I GUARANTEE it would have received incredibly piss poor scores. It's part of the reason why I think hype has no place in game's journalism. It often does more harm than good.

Hands down to the list! They are Great Games. Some of them need trophies like Folkore, Heavenly Sword,.....
