The developers themselves have cited that the main inspiration for the setting of the game is a single scene in ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ namely when the fellowship battle a horde of goblins, complete with hulking trolls, in Moria. The main difference, and the only aspect of the setting that sets it apart from any other fantasy setting, is the fact that the game constantly reminds you that YOU are playing a wizard in a fantasy game.
