Sony NGP targeting cross-platform development with PS3

Sony is pushing for developers to create cross-platform games that work across NGP and PS3, according to a developer familiar with the matter.

"and PSP2" - what is that? That never got announced.

morganfell5252d ago

I brought up this possibility 4 days ago. Then at the NGP unveiling, Kojima stated this very fact. He discussed playing a game on the PS3, using a cloud save, then leaving home and continuing the game on your NGP.

Ryudo5252d ago

I think Kojima was talking more about cloud gaming not cloud saves.

Cloud gaming is basically onlive, which allows you to potentially play Crysis on your Iphone. I hate the concept honestly although Kojima seems a massive fan of it.

He was talking about you being able to your games on whatever device you want without the boundaries, but it's just going to end up dumbing down gaming and ruining the game experience if everything is processed over the internet at server end.

Ju5252d ago

Listen to Kojima again.

There will be no "cloud remote play" across PS3/NGP. What was said is, that same art, similar engine runs the same game - with the strength of each platform (e.g. touch on NGP, Move on PS3) - across both, PS3 and NGP.

This has nothing to do with "OnLive" style "cloud gaming".

The "cloud" is the next hype. All that means is, that you have remote storage somewhere "in the cloud", which is accessible through the network (internet, be it at home or mobile, etc).

He was never referring to "being able to play a game on whatever device". "Whatever device" in that context means one in your living room (PS3) and one in your pocket (NGP).

And the system runs still a "thick client" on the device - that is a complete engine, not a "render front end".

It will most likely start with sharing saves on PSN, Trophies, friends lists, etc. But you will still need a dedicated game on each device to play.

hoops5252d ago

That would be similar to what MS wants to do with Winmo 7 phones and XBL with the Xbox360.
I think Sony has a winner here if they do this.

gamer20105252d ago

If Sony let you work on trophies across platforms like that I think it will be a huge boost to the success of both platforms.

I already know I am getting an NGP for sure, but that would really push it over the edge.

Dragun6195252d ago

I hope developers will explore this to it's full potential.

I like the idea of playing Little Big Planet 2 on my PS3, while a friend can join me online with his NGP. It would even be better if we can have Voice chat too considering NGP has Bluetooth support.

Above, Kojima has good vision for NGP. The idea of playing on the PS3, Save, then continue playing the same game on the NGP. Looking forward to his next game at E3.

@Blaze
I dunno about that, I think Third Parties will explore Cross-Platform development, I mean why not? Kojima, TecmoKoei, Sega, Capcom, showed how easy it was to port from the PS3 to the NGP so they can work on both without using much resources And it helps expand the community for their games. I'm hoping Call of Duty will actually do this feature especially after they stated they'll "set the bar" on the NGP.

Ju5252d ago (Edited 5252d ago )

hoops, similar what WinPhone7/XboxLive is for MS, the PlaystationSuite (PSS) will extend onto other mobile devices. It is very likely those phones and tablets running PSS will support PSN ID (and Trophies).

Game ports won't be possible to that extend - at least not with current devices. They are not powerful enough to run PS3/NGP like games.

When the baselines for phones/tablets will be a dual core Tegra (or similar) device, we might be getting closer.

But just being able to log into PSN on your phone and using friend invites or chat is a big step.

I think there are a lot of ideas floating around. This technology is brand new. The possibilities seem endless. Now developers need to explore those and sooner or later we will see what they will be coming up with. I think this whole thing will have quite an impact how we play games in 2-3 years from now.

MeanOldman5252d ago

all you dudes need to go back an read what morg i ssaying. he isnt talkin bout onlive. he is jus talki about movin the save game cross platform.

i went back an listened to kojima talk. you should too. start at the 3 minute and see what he says. her called it a "pseudo cloud gaming environment" he said no matter where you are at home or outside you should be able to enjoy the same games everwhere.

Blaze9295252d ago

Ehhh, good luck with that. It's pretty cool...besides the fact that 3rd parties all seem to not like supporting Sony features for some reason. I hope this cross platform thing won't just be a 1st party kind of deal but just judging off the PS3 and it's many features 3rd parties dont support, I'm not getting too excited just yet.

remanutd555252d ago

very very good to hear that , well at least i can expect first party cross platform games perhaps at launch? that Little Big Planet video footage looked just like LBP 2 so ... lol i know im crazy right ? LBP2 on NGP ? yea right i have to see it to believe it , anyways good news , cant wait to see what Mr Kojima is cooking and i want Insomniac , Sucker Punch , Santa Monica , Evolution Studios and even Team Ico to support the system at least with just 1 game

Blacktric5252d ago

Imagine playing Motorstorm Apocalypse on your way home. Or a new God Of War title. Or Killzone. Or Uncharted. Or a full fledged Metal Gear. Or Resistance. Or... Holy sh*t. I'm gonna sell everything in mah house and eat ramen for two years so I can get NGP on day 1.

remanutd555252d ago

i'd go NUTS !!! Motorstorm Apocalypse on NGP you said ? oh man , anyways a new Motorstorm title must come to NGP or they could just port Apocalypse and make it compatible with the ps3 version , anyways even though Big Big did an Excellent job with Arctic Edge i want Evo to handle Motorstorm NGP

miyamoto5252d ago (Edited 5252d ago )

That my friend will be the best way to save time gaming with any PS3-NGP compatible game on your way home specially when the traffic is very slow.

some people here doesn't even bother to talk about the news article posted.

A game playable on both PS3 & NGP will not be exactly identical in terms of game play interface on the two devices mainly because of the difference in control features available on both. Graphics will not be a problem it says only game play controls may vary.

HungryGoku5252d ago

I want Motorstorm on the NGP.

remanutd555252d ago

you are not the only one

darkdoom30005252d ago

double dipping for games sounds annyoing.

BUT... imagine if a $80 special edition of motorstorm:4 also contained a download code for motorstorm:4-Portable

Play HD goodness at home, play portable goodness everywhere else.

cloud saving would mean your progress would be consistent.

MGRogue20175252d ago (Edited 5252d ago )

Ah.. Yes, Interesting...

DA_SHREDDER5252d ago

Ill get the ngp if it has cross game chat. Is this Sony's fix?

younglj015252d ago

wow that would be smart.

how about cross platform chat

Ju5252d ago

How about using a phone?

kanetheking5252d ago

yer you would look so cool in a bus shouting down a mic at ppl or like a ass.

Kroganwrex5252d ago

I think it would be cool if they made games that were like, play on your ps3 then resume from the psp2. Thought Im not sure how I feel about buying 2 games. Unless they allow you to use just one copy, thought I completely doubt that, they ARE running a business after all.

Still, I would never buy 2 of the same game just to play one of them on a smaller screen with worse graphics.

Ju5252d ago

There should be a special deal. But even if you have to buy both, you get feature that neither alone would offer. I mean, it should offer more than just the same game. Like unlocks if you own both, or additional content or such.

But a second game cannot be for free. Both could be cheaper, though. If they share the art, you can actually split those cost in half for each platform -> cheaper games.

remanutd555252d ago

they could bundle both games dont you think ?

"Living La Vita Loca"

Lord Anubis5122d ago

but can we manipulate the wind?

Giggitty

LordStig5122d ago

I've always liked the Clap Hanz sport games the controls are not complicated so they're easy to jump in to and the DLC was dirt-cheap.

Surfaced5122d ago

Definitely getting this at launch, along with Gravity Daze and maybe Uncharted.

blusoops5122d ago

This along with uncharted will be day one!
Also, i'll get stardust and sound shapes, cause i imagine they'll be cheap downloads...i hope.

Sony PS Vita (NGP) Australian Price Revealed?

OXCGN:

"And no, it isn’t cheaper because of our strong dollar.

With the unveiling of the not so secret name of Sony’s upcoming handheld console today at E3 as the Sony PS Vita (no longer the NGP or PSP2), Americans, Europeans, and Japanese got to find out the price. But not Australians. Yet.

It has just been revealed by EB Games what the estimated RRP for the PS Vita here is."

gaminoz5129d ago

Wow...import anyone? That isn't fair considering the Aussie $ is better right now...

Tachyon_Nova5129d ago

PS3 is still $500 retail price over here, so $338 actually surprised me by being so low.

BadCircuit5129d ago (Edited 5129d ago )

And he says that price could go UP??? I really really hope the games aren't region locked.

Mind you I mostly feel that way because the US price was so good.

gaminoz5129d ago

Well I do have to admit the price is WAY better than the 3DS RRP!

timzone5129d ago

Region free would be great for the consumer especially given how the vita is something you would take with you as you travelled internationally. If it wants to sell 100 million plus then I think region free is a must.

gaminoz5129d ago

It would also one-up the 3DS, which is region locked.

VampiricDragon5129d ago

the ps2 was region locked.

How was that?

XboxOZ3605129d ago

They could also not allow imports restricting hardware from overseas which many do these days to ensure local markets are not affected.

It's outrageous for sure to have a price like that, but, it is Sony after all, Bot Nintendo and Sony do have a rather high regard for their products, and tend to charge for that.

STN Writes:

Now that Sony has officially announced the new name of the NGP to be “Vita”, we decided that it was time to get some hands-on time with the powerful handheld device. After waiting in line for two hours, We finally got to the demo stations and were told that we would have four minute demos with five different games.

Terrible name. Having owned a PSP since 2006 I can honestly say the Vita does not appeal. I know it should but I really hate the form factor and lack of built in storage. I hated having to buy memory cards from the get go for the PSP and doing it all over again plain sucks.

GoldPS35129d ago (Edited 5129d ago )

Let's see you make your own handheld then. Give it a better name and better features. Let me know when you done making it.

Close_Second5129d ago

So your saying because I'm just a consumer I dont have a valid opinion? are Sony giving this away for free or do they need to convince me my money is worth it?

By the way, PSP2 is a better name.

gta28005129d ago (Edited 5129d ago )

I'm glad I still have my PSP and I'm glad I can still use the same memory cards. Memory sticks are pretty cheap now compared to when PSP first came out. You can literally buy like a 8GB for 20 bucks. And I don't care about the name. That's the last thing that's gonna be on my mind when this sexy beast is in my hands.

By the way, has it been confirmed that there will be no built in storage? It would be great if they provided a couple of gigs. Nothing major but enough to hold a lot of save data. Then just make the MS optional for those who will want to buy downloadable titles.

SilentNegotiator5129d ago (Edited 5129d ago )

Quit complaining about the name. No one blinks twice at the name "Wii" anymore.
It's just a name.

The built-in storage was obviously going to be a price barrier (make it more expensive than 3DS), so they removed it. You can easily fix this by buying a 16GB memory card (The amount that was planned to be in the NGP).....problem solved. And if 16GB isn't enough for you, then there's nothing to complain about; it wouldn't have met you needs anyway.

Close_Second5129d ago

So, NGP + 16GB memory card will cost what? you all know it will be months after the release of the Vita before 16GB memory cards will be affordable.

Gee, I hope the next iPod comes with no built in memory.

gta28005129d ago

16GB memory stick for less than a PS3/360 game. Not too bad, I'll be using the 8GB I have on my old PSP but if I ever need more space I'll upgrade to this and by then I'm sure it will be cheaper than 50.

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-...

Close_Second5129d ago

You do realise the Vita uses a new type of memory card and not a pro-due or mini/micro SD.

VampiricDragon5129d ago

In the US yes. Much more expensive in japan and europe

with games likely at 60 dollars.

Quagmire5129d ago

Only Americans would disagree, they dont believe the rest of the world.

Mnemonic-DK5129d ago

What I don't get is why Sony continues to screw over their EU customers?

Late releases, downgraded hardware, more expensive consoles - all this to their most loyal customer base. WTF?

And now PSVita will be using Valve's infamous 1$=1€ pricing? 249$~1269DKK and 249€~1856DKK - aka the 33% "EU tax"! :(

F that - I'll just do what I started doing with Valve - Stop buying until the price is lowered.

Sony make it very hard to continue to support them. PPL are getting very tired of being screwed over by them again and again.

SilentNegotiator5129d ago

WAHT?? Things being more expensive in the EU and Japan? I'm stunned!
/s

What the hell were you expecting?

MasterCornholio5129d ago

games will probably be worth the same as 3DS ones. I read in an article somewhere (tried to find it but cant) that the development costs for the Vita is the same as the PSP. What i do know is that the Vita in europe will cost the same as the 3DS which is priced at 250 euros here. Dont fight it fanboys the NGP and the 3DS cost the same unless Nintendo drops the price before the Vitas release which might happen.

Regardless on which one you choose both are quality handhelds and in the end its down to the games that you like.

VampiricDragon5129d ago

i read that ngp games will be 60

AceofStaves5129d ago

I can't wait to get the PS Vita. The name is fine. After all, we're gaming in a generation where the dominant home console is called 'Wii.'
