Examiner: DC Universe Online Review - Fun but buggy

Examiner: The old saying about how the release of an MMORPG is simply the beginning of the "paid beta" rings true with DC Universe Online (DCUO). The new game by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) is a lot of fun to play, but you'll have to suffer through numerous bugs from the merely annoying, like the game sending you the same message over and over again in an endless loop, to the game-stopping, like being stuck in combat mode forever with no way to regain health.

The end game content is highly engaging and varied. Most reviews will be in the 7-9 range, so this isn't a QQ about the score, but I couldn't find it anywhere in the review.

And I love how no one these days recalls what a buggy heap of $hit WoW was at launch. Blizzard has the advantage of most games journalists having no long term memory. And if we're talking about balancing and bugs, how come Cata got near perfect scores? Tol Barad? 3 hour LFD ques? Really? Druids being completely borked at launch? Paladin healing ruined? How is THAT not buggy?

It's funny how this industry claims it's looking for the next WoW killer (which will really just be WoW naturally showing it's age and other, good MMOs shaving off a slice here and there - keep in mind that over half of Blizzard's subs come from penny and dime subscriptions in China too), then gives Blizz a free pass. No wonder the developers have such arrogance, the industry feeds into it.

You are absolutely right Chris, but this so called gaming journalism this generation is full of inconsistent reviews, unprofessional journalists and yes, bias. That is why people still do not fully respect the gaming world, because of immature and frankly terrible journalists which mainly represent it (I'm talking about YOU IGN, Gamespot, and Gametrailers)

darx5207d ago

Or this generation of gamers are a bunch of crybabies.

Ryudo5208d ago

Actually Chris your being unfair, I have the game and I haven't experienced a single bug on the PC version.

But at the same time my friend also has it and he can't play for more then 2 minutes without the game crashing. I have looked at plenty of reasons behind this and it remains an issue.

I have checked online and other people are having the same problems, WoW had it's issues at launch but it was playable, Age of Conan had it's issues at launch but it was playable, FF14 had it's issues and still does but it was playable.

Like I said for me the game works floorlessly, but for others it's it constant ballache.

Complaining about bugs and issues are what get's them sorted if no one complained they would never be fixed.

Chris3995208d ago (Edited 5208d ago )

both fixed with a soft reset. All experience - including your friends - is anecdotal to an extent. And WoW had it's "issues"? Really? 4 hour server ques ring a bell? Constant dcing in battlegrounds? Glitched quests and mobs galore? I was there for the beta>vanilla>all the rest. DCUO is totally playable. Some PS3s in certain regions - Australia, Singapore are having connectivity/ crashing issues. That's been the bulk of what has been reported on the forums (I check them everyday). With the servers as populated as they are, I'd say your friend is in the minority.

P.S. I've submitted over 20 bug reports, so I know how the process works. The first 30 days of an MMO are always touch and go, as the stress of a real time server load can cause all sorts of issues. That's how MMOs work. There's so much Chicken-Litting in the industry these days it's sickening.

Ryudo5207d ago

Look you can cover it up all you want but you only have to head over to the forums on DC online to see my friend is not the minority.

P_Bomb5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

Vocal minority is a term that sometimes comes to mind as far as people complaining on forums. Of course people on forums are gonna be troubleshooting their issues, that's what forums are for. Who's gonna log in just to say "everything's great, just thought I'd waste your time."

It's like going to the doctor's, seeing a room full of sick people, then assuming that small sample is representative of the entire population and there must be a plague out there or something. "Everyone's sick!" Well, no. Healthy people don't generally waste their time sitting in hospital waiting rooms, and people who don't have all these "paid beta" bugs aren't gonna be posting if they're busy playing the game. But the reviewer assumes everyone's got the bug like him. He says as much.

"YOU'LL have to suffer...like this and like that." "Plenty of bugs that will frustrate you on your way to 30." Really? Cuz I got to level 30 last night and I didn't suffer what you told me I would.

To truly see buggy and frustrating one only needs to look at Battlefield Bad Company 2 since Vietnam. The sporadic stats and weapons/perks resets and trophies not unlocking have had the developer struggling to fix it for a month, recently announcing a server reset. DCUO has to my knowledge nothing of the sort. I got a 'system data is corrupted please delete' message my 1st day but I didn't delete, I just reset and have been playing ever since. Got one lvl 30, one 11 and just started a new charachter. If DCU's corrupted messages aren't even truly corrupted, then I think the game is already ahead of the curve.

Ryudo5207d ago

4 pages and some threads 20 pages long of people saying they can't play the game at all for more then 2 minutes without it crashing aren't a minority. try and sum it up with silly analogy's and your fanboy goggles all you want fact is the game has issues the number of disagrees I get doesn't matter N4G is a completely biased community.

Examiner gave Fallout New Vegas 9/10. That game is so buggy that it is unplayable.

Jezuz5208d ago

If you like the game then **** the reviews. It's a 10/10 in your opinion if it's fun

FrankMcSpank5208d ago

^^^This.

But Jesus you should use profanity.

jneul5208d ago

ARE YOU SOME SORT OF ANTI CHRIST LOL YOU HAVE ZZZ'S IN YOUR NAME, Just joking...
dcuo is a 9/10 because it's fun but not perfect, give it time and it will be 10/10 because all bugs will be eventually fixed, which is why mmorpg fans often wait a few months before jumping onto a new mmorpg

TheObserver5208d ago (Edited 5208d ago )

"Fun but buggy"

Isn't that referring to COD? Haha.

Donnyskillz5208d ago (Edited 5208d ago )

i know the bugs will be worked out and i love the game on the ps3 ...what im more concerned with is that fact that 2/3 of the players have disapeared. they reached the level 30 cap , got the free month of play and have left the game. i had 5 people in my league that have deleted their accounts so that tells you something. i hope this game is around for some time but with people dropping like flies it will never compare to WOW. last week the areas were flooded with people...now its barren, i guess maybe they will come back once the cap is raised or missions are added.

bigtrucknd5208d ago

The game just released on the 11th. They still have 20 free days left that makes no sense.

P_Bomb5207d ago (Edited 5207d ago )

@Donny
Hmm. Both my PVE servers (Justice and Redemption) were still on 'high' as of last night.

Those people that you don't see anymore probably just decided to level up a villain now if they were doing a hero, or vice versa. That's what I'm doing. Now I'm on the server 'Crisis'. It's a whole new story and set of missions when you flip allegiances.

There is a created charachter cap too. If you're full you have to delete one to make another. I know people that filled all their slots right away just to reserve names.

Maybe they're trying out a new mentor if they're on a platinum run? Doing raids and duos won't get you a platinum. You have to 'prestige', give up everything and start again.

A lot of people on forums still aren't grasping the whole 6 mentors, two campaigns thing. Maxing one guy to 30 is just that. One guy. Check their trophy list. If their golds are racking up in a month then you know they've been busy.

MMOs In 2021 Retrospective: Console Edition

WTMG's Thomas Medina: "As far as I’m concerned, console MMOs have always been in a weird place. PC is where the main game is most popular. MMOs were born there, work best there, and have the vast majority of titles. Mobile is then next in line, with touchscreens and portability that adds something new while functioning well. Console gaming, on the other hand, is not portable (for the most part). Plus, it uses a controller, which is not the best instrument when your control scheme requires a thousand buttons and a cursor. That being said, there is an audience, and where there’s money to be made, publishers find a way. So here we are with some of the biggest console MMO games and how I feel they handled 2021. "

Best Superhero Video Games Available Right Now

From Xfire: "A lot of video games are designed to make players feel like a superhero. However, very few actually feature superheroes or have players take on the role of a superhero. What makes this even worse is that there are even fewer superhero video games that can be considered good."
