Aerith’s death (from Final Fantasy VII) is still the most significant death in gaming

"You know it’s been 13 years since Final Fantasy VII came out on PlayStation and still one of the most significant things that I (PGN) remember about the game is the now-classic scene of Sephiroth killing Aerith."

"Is it the most significant death in gaming to you?"

Though your comment is funny have you seriously ever played Final Fantasy VII? It was the frontiere rpg of its day and the first to really go mainstream imo. LOTS of people cried and since most gamers are guys then yup that means that a whole lot of guys cried when they got to that point. Nice video by MegaRAN to!

DolfZigglers5254d ago

Ok never played it so whatever. Still never cried over any game even when a death happened like in Gears of War.

El_Colombiano5254d ago

I don't think anybody can expect any emotional connection to a character from a game with such a generic story line such like GeOW's.

Shok5254d ago

My GOD Final Fantasy 7 is the most over-rated game OF ALL FUCKING TIME. Everything thing about it!! I mean, the gameplay is fine, but CLOUD and SEPHEROTH themselves are so over-rated its ridiculous.......and now people are saying Aerith's death is the most significant in gaming? Geez, how over-rated can a game get!?

ULTIMATE_REVENGE5254d ago

True say, FF9 is way better than FF7.

NovusTerminus5254d ago (Edited 5254d ago )

*Looks at Call of Duty*

Pretty damn over rated.

I loved FFVII, but in truth there are allot of games to match it and be better.

Shok5254d ago

Lol, yea, CoD too.

But yea FFVII is in no way bad, just severely over-rated.

imoutofthecontest5254d ago

I don't know if I agree with the article or not, but since you have a strong opinion about it, I might ask of you which game deaths have been more significant? Put it out there.

Shok5254d ago

I'm no Halo fan (anymore), and definitely not a 360 fanboy, but the 5 deaths of Noble Team in Halo Reach were far more significant than Aerith (specifically, the death of Noble 6). Again, I could care less about Reach now, but I watched the whole campaign and the way those Spartans went out were nothing short of epic and held so much importance.

I'm not saying those were THE MOST important, but they were more important than Aerith's.

yewles15254d ago

No offence, Shok, but a lot of fans still love title, and it's not like anyone shove's it down anyone's throat anymore. This isn't 2002-2003 here.

WildArmed5254d ago (Edited 5254d ago )

Agreed,
it's initial reception was well deserved.
But now people look back like they got the gospel and refuse to look forward.
Now that's ignorance.
It's ok to say you LOVED FF7, but c'mon.
Not EVERYTHING that FF7 did, it did perfectly.
People need to accept that.

Plus, FF6 was the best in terms of gameplay/story ;)
Regardless of the sprite stuff.

Though the RPG i enjoyed the most was Dragon Quest 8 <3

Most important death?
*looks at MGS series*
fuck it, there are too many good deaths in gaming.
Why belittle all of these great deaths by picking one.

I played it, and I didn't give a dam about her death. She was there for nothing anyway.

wwm0nkey5254d ago (Edited 5254d ago )

I didnt care for a single character at all when I played that game. Final Fantasy 7 is the single most over rated game in the series. FF9 has to be the best PS1 era FF game still and it deserves more love than FF7

EDIT: also Hironobu Sakaguchi didn't work on it so that probably explains why I hated it. After he left Square died...good thing he made Lost Odyssey which is more of a FF title than FF13 lol

ULTIMATE_REVENGE5254d ago (Edited 5254d ago )

That's exactly what I've been wondering all this time, everyone keeps on crying for a FF7 remake when FF9 is much better in so many ways.

If anything deserves a remake it's FF9 and not FF7, but then again it's typical for Sony fanboys on this site to just go along and say whatever everyone else is saying.

You guys should play the games before you follow everyone else like sheep.

wwm0nkey5254d ago

I would kill for a HD remake of FF9 :(

TOYstoryManIam5254d ago

FF9 was the best in the series I thought. Most significant death goes to Aerith though. Maybe because it was the first of its kind that was portayed in such a way?

LostWithoutTraces5254d ago

Well the author does agree with it being overrated but was her death the most significant is what he's really asking. Umm I'm not one to get too emotional to my games but yeah it was a pretty powerful moment.

Yeah. That’s the first I’ve seen it anywhere near #1.

Mario 64 is great but I wouldn’t put it over Mario World.

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list is a crime.

CUnit12312367d ago

Sorry lol. I wrote the article but 5 of us voted for many different games and majority went on the list then we worked on the list. If it were just my personal top favorite we'd seen some xenoblade and star ocean as well as some others. Thanks for checking out it!

Chrono Trigger at 31 makes my heart hurt.

Not having any Xenoblade Chronicles games on the list at all is a crime.

The effort here is impressive. Hope it doesn’t get taken down.

fr0sty277d ago

He should have done it in Dreams though, the limitations of having done it in LBP are obvious.

solideagle277d ago

ah Dreams had so much potential, I think they should have released it on PC. one can only dream about dreams sale and popularity on PC. PC has modding/creative crowd and I think it would have been a hit

gleepot277d ago

I love seeing projects like this. So much passion and time.
