The HipHopGamer has always been a fascinating person to me. His enthusiasm is unmatched while his grammatical skills are…well, lacking. So, I asked myself, what if a series of HipHopGamer articles were submitted to a certified high school teacher as a writing assignment? The results are staggering if not enlightening.

Anyway i never took his writing serious. He may get the information out and everything, but to me this was expected especially with his titles. He isn't really a bad journalist considering that he can get out and get this information, he just isn't to well with his grammar.

good grammar makes for a good story. Doesn't have to be PERFECT though, just understandable.
Have you ever read anything that isn't understandable and yet it has important content in it? It's still critical to have even if it doesn't seem important to most people here.

Personally i like the guy and find his enthusiasm entertaining, he might not be perfect with his grammar but his style of delivery and uniqueness within his field sets him apart from the others.

Yes he does come accross as biased and sometimes his thoeries are weakly supported but, hes just doing his thing and thats writing articles about what he loves and sharing it to the gaming comunity.

I dont get the hate towards him personally, he obviously puts work into getting his information and setting up interviews, so why bash him on grammar and and his english when he himself is cleary not bothered about it and is concentrating on what matters, the games.

-Using broken/different english doesn't necessarily hamper ones depth of expression. However, I have seen many educated fools depth of expression hindered by their unbending conformity to certain grammatical rules that they usually dont understand very well anyway.

HHG's success is partially due to his unwillingness to conform and be another boring journalist clone, which makes him unique and appreciated.

Also: What nevin said+ If you are going to be a grammar nazi, start making sure your own grammar is impeccable first.(it usually isn't)

Ebonics is nothing but slang. It's broken english. Speaking ebonics is speaking broken english. Anyone who speaks broken english in place of proper english will never be seen as a cultivated, intellectual person. Hip Hop Gamer may set himself apart from the rest of the gaming journalists by refusing to "conform" and speaking broken, ghetto english, but most people will never take him seriously for that exact reason.

Grammer is not set in stone.

Take a linguistic anthropology class and you'll see that language is always changing. Formal grammar is a stubborn system that will not last long because, thanks to the internet, acronyms and misspellings or misuse of homophones has become common.

I also guarantee a lot of you on this site have used the word "lead" when you mean the word "led." But you don't care. So stop judging HHG. I understand him quite well.

Great point!!! Language has never been a static entity. It's evolving and ever-changing. Thus, we get words added to the dictionary on a yearly basis. As you said, the internet has birthed a new form of linguistic expression with the likes of noob, pwnd, etc. What people fail to understand is that major sites have something called an editor! That's probably why there are less grammatical errors in their writing. I am as guilty as the next person of juxtaposing homophones as the next.
The judgment and hate with which people pursue HHG is hilarious at best. I could understand if this was a constructive criticism article. But, it is a thinly veiled attempt at knocking HHG for not being a journalist. Maybe...just maybe...the idea of a typical journalist is in transition just as much as the language itself. Or maybe HHG is happy to just be a "gaming personality". Either way, as long as what I see and read is comprehensible I don't have issues.

There's a difference between talking to a person on the net, and being KNOWN for real. How would you feel if reviewers for example started typing with spelling errors and grammatical issues.

Also for those ready on playing the race card, I'm African-American also. It's great that he's enthusiastic, but take some time into really thinking what you're doing. At this point the whole gaming journalism is becoming a social fad. Look at the Spike VGAs, random internet journalism. It's actually starting to get discerning with the take on things, when you've been through with gaming ever since the late 70s, early 80s to today.

I know he's going with the hip-hop fad, and that's fine, but you have to think about what area you're trying to transition that into.

Thing is, the article here, it's no better than what it's going out for, and quite frankly, there's unwarranted hate going on. Thing is, I'm trying to go for the constructive criticism of things, but because this is the internet, people go the short route to throw hate onto him.

Here are some things for you kids one everyone single person makes gramatical mistakes no matter their position. Two reading the article that was provided to the so called teacher I notice corrections that are completly irrelivent for the target audiance that HHG's letter is aimed at like explaining who Respawn is...the letter wasn't a submission piece for a completly ignorant reader...duh. Three placing a negative behind using the number sign (#) is an industry standard that professionals from all walks fo the adult life use. No doubt Hiphopgamer is bringing a new vibe to journalism and unfortunately that opens doors to criticism. However, this article for me represents the harsh reality of trying to downgrade an individual and attempting to defame his character. From my understanding hes ghetto dialect is one of the main aspects which makes him hiphopgamer. These articles only prove that hes indeed got journalist thinking about him to the extent that some would spend a great deal of time arranging meetings with english teachers, now what does that say for them.
