Sony gloats about PS3, but trouble remains

Sony released an "infographic" today to try to convince consumers that the PlayStation 3 is better than other game consoles and set-top boxes. But is this a reaction to trailing sales?

It's from CNET, so it's obviously meant to downplay Sony, but I don't see how they could deny the graphics posted by Sony... The PS3 IS THE BEST MULTI-MEDIA device hands down beating the 360,Wii and Apple TV and any other media setting and you can't argue otherwise.

Just look at the facts.. The PS3 allows BLU-RAY (Huge + here). Unlike the 360, the PS3 virtually plays any format you throw at it (AND IT LETS YOU FRIGGIN FAST FORWARD SONGS UNLIKE THE CRAPPY 360 MEDIA PLAYER!!! Also it allows you to play .mkv files via media server which again is a huge + for me).. Unlike the 360, the PS3 allows you to store media in the HDD. I have a 250GB Slim (360) where nearly 200GB is wasted cause I can't store stuff in the HDD such a bummer.. Also the music and video interface is a hell lot more user friendly than the 360s or Wiis (love the frame selection in video when you press the Square button on the PS3)..

Truth to be told, the only competitor in that list seems to be the 360, but still PS3 beats it into the dust with free online, Blu-Ray and the above things..

AND THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SALES SO CNET STOP FISHING FOR HITS!!!

The PS3 is the best all rounder with all the capabilities it offers including a built in web browser (even tho it sucks) and a built in blu ray player. A win for those who wants a useful machine that doesn't only play games

I totally agree....people fail to realize. The PS3 is a damn good media player. Especially with the ability to save ur HD movies to ur HDD. That has to be one of my fav features.. I currently have about 15 movies on my HDD. The ability to change your icon is pretty neat also.

Apparently you understand little about value. Look at my 60GB PS3 when it came out. $599. The cost of play for the PS3 after launch to play online till this date? $0. I bought my 360 when it came out at launch. Cost? $399. Cost after launch to play on line? Already more than $600. Add to that all the batteries I have had to purchase.

I have gone through 5 rechargeable batters as well because they do not work. Proprietary charge cable or a Microsoft "You gotta buy it from us" special? The special. PS3 charge cable? Included and industry standard.

Cost of larger HDD for my 360 when I purchased it? $179. PS3 HDD? Any laptop SATA II drive. Twice the drive for half the price.

A laundry list of cost can be created ujean that easily shows anyone that is the slightest forward thinking realized that they may pay an initial higher cost up front for the PS3 but the long term savings are evident. There is something to be said for the individuals that do not try to get off cheap at the start line.

And we haven't even discussed that huge failure of a doorstop known as the external HDDVD player the 360 used. The five 360s I have been through or the games I lost because the DRM tool that took two years to deliver didn't fix all the downloads nor the lost Live time for which MS failed to comp.

I love having the PS3s in my house with my same account on all of them. I can game downstairs, go upstairs, fire up a different PS3 and play the same game WITHOUT ACCOUNT MIGRATION. After all, time is money. Downloads? No problem, just apply them to that console as well...at no cost.

This Cnet article is just utterly ridiculous but what should we expect by now. "TEH PS3 id DOOMED" is a Christmas tradition, as sillier now than when it first was printed.

Morgan, the pay to play online complaint is tired at best. Sure, we all would prefer free, but if the service makes people happy, then isn't that the point? It's like arguing that the PS3 is more expensive because you have to buy Blu-ray movies. It's what the device is intended for. All of us idiots that pay to play on Live do it because we enjoy the gaming aspect. Live is a service, not a fee which is where people like to confuse it. The attach rate has always been higher for the 360 also. Does this mean the 360 is worse since people have to pay more for the additional games?

This article is about Sony's new infograph which points out the superior aspects of their machine. They didn't do this as a free service to inform people on the fence, they did it to try and sell more PS3's. I'm not sure why people are getting defensive over this. The Kevin Butler ads are also done to push more hardware and games. That's what marketing does.

The PS3 has been in third place since it launched in North America. Unless you play sales, why does this matter? If you are after bragging rights, buy a Wii. Just don't tell us the PS3 is best because it is in last place. Everything Sony does is to push sales. That's not a bad thing.

I sent mine off to get fixed at the beginning of this month. It was at their repair center for a grand total of five calendar days. Or three Business days. Arrived Thursday evening, left the following Tuesday evening. FedEx is estimating Friday delivery making my total time without it 15 days. At a TOTAL cost of $99. First time I had any issue with my 40GB PS3 since I bought it in mid 2008.
Unless you can find a slim for $150-175, it's cheaper to fix it then upgrade the HDD than it would be to buy a new system.

Why are people getting so worked up about this? All 3 consoles have there + and - points. But it all comes down to what you use them for. For me my ps3 is used for the exclusive games play tv itv,4od and bbci player. Also remote play with psp. Xbox for exclusive and cross plat games, kinect, skyplayer, streeming videos from my server, zune. So as you can see i use them for playing games and other options they offer me. None of them are the best imp you only get the best when you own them both. I did have a wii but decieded to trade the wii in when i got kinect as i did not play on it that often and when i did it was for gamecube games so just pulled my game cube out.

I think the article should have stated that Sony's N. American sales were down considerably and this was possible a more desperate move on their part to try and correct the direction in that market.

When you're finished playing the sales game (which is silly because 360 is in worldwide last place), and going to the COD well, you will see that you've been in denial.

I think there is a lot of projection of preconcieved ideas going on when people interpret advertising as "desperate". By that measure, we could say Microsoft must be one of the most desperate companies in existance with how much they advertise. But that wouldn't really be accurate in describing their motivation for advertising. Why would the reason for advertsing be any different from the biggest seller, or second, or third seller? It is a normal function of business after all. Seems to me there is an outside opinion tagged to it, when accusing one of being desperate, and another not when doing normal business functions. All these comments about being desparate are not on reality, but rather on some column writer's creative opinion of an advertisement. Funny how a flame bait article can get people reacting to a fictional scenerio.

Meh, it's all gotten so subjective. Back with the PS2, it was clear which console was dominant! But nowadays, even though you have the Wii in the sales lead, it appeals to such a different demographic, and its attach rate is so much lower than the other two consoles, that's it's hard to clearly concede victory to Nintendo this gen.

And with MS making such a huge shift toward the casual market, I think we've got a very interesting few years ahead of us (and I don't just mean games--every console'll have great games; I mean business-wise).

Where was this "massive fanbase" when the GC was struggling so much? Nintendo had a huge turnaround by capturing the casual market--the Wii was the new Furbee craze. It's highly unlikely that they manage to start another craze with their next console.

Trouble remains! Are they kidding? If Ps3 is in trouble so is the 360., and from what I have seen both systems are selling extremely well worldwide. For the price The PS3 is an amazing piece of tech though, bought mine day one and it has been the best investment in my house, the kids love it, the wife records all her programs, I have my music and games, we all love the Bluray and it is in the living room not some cooky little home office like a PC.

As a PS3 owner, I love the fact that the last two years of exclusives have been brilliant. I love my Blu ray collection, my saved HD movies and overall the simplicity of an easy xmb.

As a 360 owner, who has gone through countless controllers hammering the thing with games in the early years, I am a bit gutted. The HD-DVD died a quick death leaving my player gathering dust. The games the last two years havent really rocked my world either.
I am also upset with Microsoft for spending 2010 building up to Kinect and not focussing on present players as much.

Sony don't spend as much money on advertising. If Microsoft had spend as much money on new games, as they do on blabbing on about how good they are and Sony not, I'd be a happier 360 owner.

I don't see what the big fuss is. Whether Sony succeeds or fails people always say bad things about them. Sony won the format war and did anyone say 'nice work Sony'? No. It was 'they didn't mean to win' or 'it didn't matter' or 'Bluray is a crappy unnecessary format'. From someone who has gone from PC, PS3, 360, back to PS3, as their main gaming platform. I can tell you now that the PS3 is easily the best gaming platform, followed by PC, and last - 360.

Both the PC and 360 lack GREAT games, but at least with the PC, online gaming is FREE and OH BOY did I have a blast with Starcraft 2. Other then Starcraft 2, I have not touched my PC since.

360 - Immensely enjoyed Alan Wake and at the time it was my main platform, I was playing BFBC2 etc etc and paying for LIVE and then played GT5 for PS3 online etc. What I noticed was that there was HARDLY any difference between online between PS3 and 360, so what was I paying for LIVE for? Cross game chat? big whoop.

What games does the 360 have on the horizon? F*CK ALL and I am paying for LIVE?

This is where I woke up and jumped back to PS3 as my main console. I get to enjoy all the multiplatform games that are also available on the system, plus all these AWESOME exclusives that are coming out, plus FREE ONLINE GAMING.

It really is a no brainer. After experiencing all platforms, it only becomes clear then, that the PS3 is definitely the best gaming platform to date.
