Sankaku Complex: Why are JRPG Heroes All Emo Teenagers (NSFW)

One of the writers with Kojima Productions has written a politely scathing piece in which he decries the JRPG’s single-minded obsession with having overwrought teenage boys as their protagonists, suggesting that is tied to a wider lack of heroic adult male archetypes in contemporary Japanese culture.

The original source is in the Kojima Productions Blog (in Japanese):

They were "emo teenagers" before the term emo was created.

The term "emo" existed since the early 80's when the genre was being popularized by bands like Rites Spring, in the 2000 was when it finally gained mainstream appeal. When the little kids got tired of listening to lame nu-metal like Slipknot and other crappy bands like Limp Bizkit they started digging deeper and they found punk and its sub genres of hard-core, emo, post-hardcore and the hybrid of metal-core because pure Metal wasn't cool enough.

Emo is not what most people think it is. But like everything that suddenly turns mainstream it loses its real meaning and now Emo is people with fancy hair-cuts that want to cut themselves. People with no knowledge (which is mostly everybody) just took the term "emo" as the literal definition of "emotional" and here is when the confusion started.

It is like if the term "hard-core punk" was taken out of context and people started saying that the genre is for people that likes to watch porn or something. lol

Squall wasn't emo, he was a loner but going by the definition of emo from the mainstream then he was an emo.

Yeah, we know about its origin, thanks. Doesn't keep emo music from sucking the big one.

Not everyone is a space marine who chews I-beams for a hobby. And shallow as hell.

Squall isn't emo. emo is sasuke from naruto.
emo: somebody that is very emotional and usually thinks the world is against him/her. Or somebody that complains about everything.

They are waaaayyyy better than the characters in neir. All they do in neir is swear. I hate that.

Just like WRPGs, (and every other western/eastern based game applies) JRPGs are intended for a teenage point of view. I believe western aim for a older teenage demographic compared to the Japanese but besides this, both cultures have different views on how the main character should be. Westerners prefer more mature, people they would look up to whereas the East prefer a main character in which they can relate to.
