Confirmed: CoD Black Ops has problems with PS3 and PC

Thanks to the recent analysis of Call of Duty Black Ops between PS3 and Xbox 360, it has been concluded that the PS3 version of Black Ops has serious perfomance issues causing the game to freeze and drops its frame and among other things, thanks to the graphic engine implemented in the game by Treyarch.

I have been reading this site for a while now, but now I need to comment.

There is NO DOUBT that if this article had said that the 360 version was inferior, ALL PS3 fanboys would be throwing comments about how rubbish the xbox is! Yet when it is the PS3 which is inferior it is Treyarch's fault?!

The Xbox has always been the best of the two when it comes to multiplatform. Most of the time anyway.

But how come the double standards are so blatent?! Why is it that when the Xbox's version is better it's the devs fault, but when the PS3 version is better it's because the Xbox can't compete?!

Because it's been proven that the PS3 can do MUCH better. I have the PS3 version of Black Ops. It looks worse than Modern Warfare 2. It seriously looks terrible in comparison to recent games. If Black Ops can't look as good as Modern Warfare 2, wouldn't it be a developer problem? Don't forget that before IW had it's internal troubles people were calling Treyarch the bastard child of Call of Duty. Removing IW doesn't make Treyarch any better. They still suck compared to similar developers.

If it were a new developer with a new franchise it would make more sense. In this case I don't see a reason to use the "omg fanboys are crazy!" card because this just shouldn't happen. First of all, no one expected much from Black Ops in the way of graphics or performance. I personally expected more of the same. They gave less than they did with World at War. Most gamers that visit this site know that the 360 is the lowest denominator in HD gaming (smaller storage, less hard drive space). It's also the easiest and most cost efficient platform to develop for. Only true 360 fanboys will ever expect more from the 360 than what they have already. PS3 fanboys still expect more from in house developers, and for some strange reason multiplatform developers. I don't expect Treyarch (always been a marginal developer in comparison to the better teams) to work any GG magic. But I did expect them to equal their previous average offering. If Halo: Reach was less of a game than Halo 3, people would have said "Bungie mailed it in" and they would have been right. You don't get worse as time goes on. You either progress or stagnate. It's technology, not body weight.

The reason why when there is a crap running ps3 game and the developer gets the blame is because the PS3 has shown what it can do time and again (Uncharted 2/God Of War 3/Killzone 2/3 for example).
These are the best looking games available on consoles and there is no game on 360 that can match the tech/graphical level of these games, lets be real, there are great looking 360 games but there is only 1 or 2 that can compare to todays ps3 exclusives.

So when a 360 game runs good and the same game runs bad on ps3, even though it has shown it can produce FAR greater visuals, there is only 1 place to look for the difference in quality - the developers.

The PS3 may be hard to develop for, but this is not their first gen game release for it and have had YEARS to improve on their engine etc.

- Also, after playing Black Ops for about 30 min, I can't believe how bad it looks, the res of the textures are SO low! My netbook could run better visuals than what they have running on PS3. They have just dumped all processing work on the GPU and have obviously ignored the rest of the additional ps3 power (like extra SPU's etc).

I'm playing it off and on right now with my PS3. It's flat out UGLY. Someone messed up when they let the Infinity Ward guys get loose. Treyarch is extremely underwhelming.

There is no way that second video is really from a rig with an i7 and 2 gtx 480s. That is what I have in my rig and my experience is plenty smooth. Some people are having troubles, but it isn't everyone.

...as usual. No need to panic ps3 people, just go buy a 360 if you want the best gaming experience this gen. It's not Treyarch vault the cell is incapable of running 60 fps. I think Treyarch as well as Infinity ward did there best to try and match up the inferior cell to the very versatile 360.

If it makes you feel better, the 360 version isn't that great either. It seems to be two different games mixed into one. Some levels look awesome while others look like an Xbox 1 game. I'm guessing that a couple of levels as well as most of the Multi-player came from Infinity Ward people...tho I doubt Treyarch will admit it.

This article confuses me, i have the 360 version (since i dont own a console, my flatmate has a 360). I've been playing the campaign for a good few hours and i can name numerous times the game has frozen and the framerate dropped to less than 3fps. This problem is is across the board 360, ps3, pc. cant say much for the other problems.

Funny thing was, I was going to skip this game, and get NFS: Hot Pursuit, but I'm gonna end up skipping that instead, bought Black Ops, and finished off paying my pre-order for GT5. The shooter that I am really mostly looking forward to, Deus EX: Human Revolution (I don't need that many as they are mostly the same, just sayin').

I think the integrated party system is much better than the one on MW2 where it uses the xmb, as i can join any one of my friends party without actually going onto the xmb and accepting an invite.

I've experienced the temp freezes, but my ps3 has snapped out of it every time. Multiplayer is GOOD and I'm a much bigger fan of KZ than CoD. You can't deny that the splitscreen multiplayer isn't good. People who are boycotting are missing out. At least do what I did and rent it to see for yourself.

The Campaign has good story , and that"s just about it.Every single set piece is generally taken from MW and MW2 or WAW.

If they had a 5+ year devopment time. COD games don't have that luxury. Fact- the ps3 is harder to develop for. Developers on a tight schedule will have a harder time with the ps3 which makes it likely that that version won't be as good as xbox for multipats.

The reason most games are running at a lower resolution is because of the gpu was made by ati/amd. Nvidia cards always show their superiority when you start to crank up the resolution. So enjoy you're sub-HD games (Halo:reach is also sub-HD). Meanwhile, I'll be playing FULL HD games on my "so-called" inferior ps3.

Like there is some Elder Council of Game Nerds that came to this conclusion. I have this game, I have had a good time but sadly this will probably be the last COD I will buy this generation.

The last one I had was MW2, yearly releases of a franchise are too much. On a related topic, I have not experienced any of these issues yet, tho, I did just get it yesterday so maybe I need to spend more time with it.

EDIT: Damn, on closer inspection it was really bad lag on this video. I wonder if it could be his connection speed? This hasn't happened to me, but the video doesn't look doctored. Maybe they will release a patch or something.

I beat the campaign already and I did not experience any major issues. It froze up on me during my first session, but it wasn't a big deal. I can't comment on whether the 360 version is superior because I played it on the PS3. I preferred the campaign for this game over MW2.

Right, the whole PS3 vs 360 thing is full on petty. Having both consoles, I can safely say that the PS3 multiplat titles are often worse and that is because developers have a hard time programming for the PS3. Is it developers fault? Partly, look at need for speed its almost identical, however look at fallout 3 and new vegas, massive differences. This is mainly due to the fact developers can quite easily port their games from 360 to PC and thus often use 360 as lead development console. This will obviously have adverse effects. SImilarly, the developers have problems programming for PS3 itself, such as the disc not spinning fast enough, AA issues, texture loading issues, etc so it is also partly the consoles fault with its expensive and frankly crap hardware to develop for (it may have a nice blu-ray player, but cell processor is prone to bottlenecking and graphics unit is nothing compared to 360s and thus devs have to use the alredy bottlenecked Cell).

At the end of the day the above is likely never going to change, and 360 versions of multiplat games (with the exception of Final Fantasy XIII) will be better so stop complaining and just deal with it.

I would put the blame on both of them. On Sony for developing a system with no input from game developers and less friendly software tools. Then expecting software houses to put in the extra time to take full advantage of the system. Time is money and game development takes years and can cost $5-$60 million depending on the game.
It's simply a business decision.
It's as if Sony is telling these software houses it's NOT FUNDING:

"Look, take the extra time needed to code this game properly. Put more manpower into it and the game will come out great.."

What benefit is that to a company from a business standpoint? The more time it takes to make the game, the more money it costs. Salaries have to be paid. Time lost. Time is money. Unless Sony is funding it, NO 3rd party company is going to put in the effort.
They would be foolish in most cases to do so when they can just port the game and move on.

Arent these games enough to prove that the ps3 is the beast in graphics for consoles and no game on consoles can hold a candle in front of the games mentioned above. COD BO has been so far up MS's anus, it has put me off having any interest in the game. I'm sure it will still sell like water in the desert because too many gamers don't hold developers accountable with their hard earned cash. Constantly lazy developers try and push off inferior ports to the PS3, and expect to do well.
I enjoy gaming, but I like to spend my gaming dollars wisely, and buying inferior ports just don't make sense to me. In the mean time I'm still enjoying MAG, and will enjoy KZ3 when it comes out. Activision has enough money so they don't need mine.

Anyways, Black Ops performing worse than MW2 IS a developer issue. Treyarch aren't newbs. There are devs that have made similar yet better looking multiplats...like Infinity Ward. COD ain't rocket science, it's a freakin' yearly patchwork game like Madden, Fifa, NHL and Smackdown VS Raw. There are no excuses. 3/4 of the game is Infinity Ward's sloppy seconds.

1)first of all the Blu-Ray disc speed is not as slow as your trying to claim, for one the PS3's Blu-Ray drive is a true CLV optical drive, while the XBOX360's optical drive is a CAV drive.

2)and your claim that Cell processor is prone to bottlenecking?
really? you sure you want to go with that statement, because trust me the xbox360's shared "cache" is not as good vs the Local Store of each of those SPE's processor's.

3) can the xbox360's CPU
lend the 30 billion+/shader ops/sec Graphics render to the XBOX360 GPU?, because the Cell processor can to the RSX!

the truth is 3RD party an their game engine was not made for the Cell Processor, and 1st party developer's Game engines were!

the 3rd party game developer's do not like having to make a whole new Game engine for the Cell processor, because that would cost More money, it's cheaper to port and use cross platform game engines than to have to make a whole new one.

One can already see what a platform Game Engine can do.

Sony designed the PS3 for 1st party, that's why they do it they want to sell their software..they KNOW 3RD party unless you pay for the GAME or DLC to be Exclusive. It won't Be, most of the Time 3RD party's are out to make Money and you bet they want to put their ip on as many platform's as they can. but Man power and how much they can put toward and Time and Experience with platform's determine what you can or cannot do.

Sony 1st party Has without a doubt showed what the PS3 is capable of doing, and so has Some 3rd party Studio's, while other's decided to just port their product but ,that may be cost's and Time involved. If the developer does not fix the bug's after than that is a problem an that may point toward not giving the publisher any money it's not many time's the developer's most of the Time its the Publisher.

remember many time's the developer's would want to keep working on their game until they feel it's right, but sadly many do not get to make that choice. at least the developer's that have a passion for development, and not look at it as just another paycheck.

I rented the game earlier today, and popped it in the system, went online and went online, naturally.
I was immediately taken back by how awful the graphics are in this game.

and it wasn't like they were trying their "best", everything about the multiplayer's visuals, just is LAZY. they don't even bother to change the HUD. but for me, I actually stopped and stared at the backgrounds, where "birds" were flying in circles, perfect circles I might add in a small area of space above me. I put birds in quotes because, they decided to blur them to hell, which when they are that close to me, boggles my mind. The three black rectangles flapping the air were either enormous flies, feces with wings, or aliens from another world. Or dust on the camera lens.

I also loved when the maps were loading, how they usually display a still picture of the map that's being loaded, and how ugly the stills themselves were. They had near tomb raider 1 textures, up close, and blurry, muddied, and flat texture work in the distance.

whatever happened to the first modern warefare's gorgeous visuals? seriously, that game looked damned great.

MW2 then came along, and decided to pull a Gears of war, by introducing grays and browns into the mix, not just to the midtones but to everything, almost turning it into a sepia tone game.

Then this game along, and man was I hoping for a bit more contrasty, fleshed out detail with the texture work, and I guess my hopes were too high.

You know, the game isn't terrible, it's simply knows it's going to sell. and when developers craft a sequel to a game series that they know sells well, why change?

well, after going to 3 or 4 different gamestops and other stores on launch day when MW2 came out, I realized just how much time I wasted going the distance, bending over backwards for a game that simply wasn't worth it.

I won't fall for it again.
This is COD people, they are not gods, and as the article indicts, they aren't masters in development. take the title away, and you have a game that should score only slightly higher than Dead to Rights: Retribution.

If medal of honor was released after this game, the sour aftertaste of the COD Experience would have left my mouth, and I would of gladly accepted MOH back into my life with open arms.

My point is, they can't blame it on the console when they have already worked on it before and have given equality results on both versions. I've only played multiplayer for about two hours on PS3 and I've a consistently low frame rate. Or constant minimal lag. I thought it might be my internet connection for some reason, but then I remembered my connection is damn-near perfect... So I don't know. Hoping for a patch.

I had no idea all the troubles at Infinity Ward had affected this game so much; so what game engine did they end up using, the crappy World at War one? I thought the smoke and explosions seemed familiarly crappy too, but since it was a more modern game I figured they would just utilize IW's engine...

Never buying another Treyarch game, it's official. Disappointed with Call of Duty 3, World at War and now Black Ops... truly pathetic.

Graphics are garbage, (though I'm on PC) and I'm sure the PS3 version sucks. Black Ops was such a disappointment and I can't believe I was taken in by all the hype from reviews! That just goes to show you that you can't trust reviewers they are journalists, not gamers so they wouldn't know what a good game is. I went through all this trouble getting this game and even went to Gamestop’s midnight launch and after playing it for two days I sold it on Craigslist. I could not believe how shitty this game looked, there was a gun I was using that looked like it was from Golden Eye N64! That's how bad the textures were, idk if it was the same on the xbox 360 but it was awful on the PS3. Every texture in this game was awful from the guns to the maps and also I noticed that the sound effects were cheesy too, the guns sounded like bb guns and explosions sounded like balloons popping. And the MP maps, wow don’t get me started on the MP maps, they were downright terrible I never seen such bad level design I always felt like I was traversing a maze, sometimes I wouldn’t even see more than 6 people during a game because of how big and mazy the maps are. Yes there is a serous lag, cliping and frame issue’s. But Anyways so yeah I sold it didn’t even get back all my money for it, but I was able to pick up COD4 used at GS and wow this game is so much better than MW2 and Black Ops its Call of Duty at its best no doubt about it. I will never pick up another Treyarch game again I was let down by WAW and now Black Ops. Treyarch is definitely Activisions B team for Call of Duty. Well better luck next year, I’m very curious to see how Sledgehammer does with the next COD.

Unlike a good portion of you guys, all of those, resolution, processing power blabla bla crap doesnt matter for like 80% of the people who are playing (ps3 at least, PC gamers go a bit crazy) dont care much for that, the FPS drop is tolerable but not the freezes! Either all these games have been rushed or these companies are designing games that degrade the consoles hardware so we go out and buy a new one. Fallout new vegas freezed on me about seven times and has severe frame rate issues and load times as much as playstation 1 in addition to so many glitches. Fable 3 a beautiful looking game has severe frame rate issues when i stand in the middle of a town the game slows down to the point i think its going to crash. Now I see black ops has severe problems as well this is truly sad. You know its funny how they say that its easier to develop on the 360 if so why do 360 games suffer so bad? Look at all the 360 exclusives that have huge issues starting will fable 3's framerate and screen tearing. I haven't liked the COD series since 2 and I must admit I was sold on Black Ops for the Co-op zombie mode and solid campaign (man is it soooo good). I haven't taken it online cause I want them to iron it out.

Visually I think it's easilly one of thee best looking games of this gen...

Really is a shame though that this game is riddled with so many problems...

Own cod bo for ps3, no problems, having fun, now with exclusives, I'm only renting ps3 exclusives from now on, everytime I buy an exclusive, I trade them in, never keep them longer than 3 mths, ps3 ex games for some reason has no replay value, all graphics, its like having sex with a dime piece for one night, where multiplats and 360 games I keep longer than 3 mths, and my XBox never rrod, so its keeps me playing, I rather have gameplay, and replay value be staples of games than just graphics

It's funny. I have been reading about all these "issues" with the ps3 version and yet have not experienced many of them. The only issue I have is the mp graphics is a little worse than the sp graphics. But really, big deal. It is loads of fun!!!

I know what your talking about, but i think it does depend on the game as well.

I'll explain the way i look at it.

UNCHARTED 2, great graphics, love the story and the gameplay is awesome. - Mp i enjoyed, but i've always been a fps type player. I don't even like gears online either. TPS not for me on MP. Played through 3 times.

God of War 3 - Epic game with great graphics and decent story. But it's not the kind of game you play week in week out. Played through also 3 times.

KILLZONE2 - ok story, great graphics and decent SP,MP. What killed the game for me, not enough maps and ranking up to easy. And spam central. Lost interest.

But it works for multi's as well.

Assasins creed 2 - Playing atm. Once played i will get rid of, will never look at again. 1 play through.

BFBC2 - Decent SP and Decent Mp, but bored me with not enough maps and vip was a joke. Sold.

360 titles.

Gears of war 1 - Nice graphics and played through once. Decent gameplay.

Gears of war 2 - Did not finish, bored me. Same old thing as the first tbh.

I do not play COD, twitch shooter, but i was going to give this a try. Perk system is good. But with alot of issues atm. I'll probably wait and see what's going on with KZ3.

I don't think i'm into shooters as much as i was years ago.

Q2,Q3,Q4,BF1942,BFVIETNAM,BF2 and tons of others.

On the subject of the this game itself running on PS3, i've seen it on PC and it's decent, but nothing makes me go wow.

I think they pushed in 360's direction(fan base for these types of games is bigger of course) and obviously PS3 needs more work and thus you mix the two, this is the outcome.
