While Singstar Guitar, lacks the progression that Rock Band and Guitar Hero offer, we don’t really think it was made to compete with these games anyway. To me us seems Singstar Guitar has been created to give those standing around watching something to do with their hands and in this respect it does a good job.
The main appeal of Singstar Guitar is that it’s still Singstar, and given that millions of people love this series, adding guitar functionality for those not so fond of singing can only be a good thing.
The second of Sony’s SingStar spin-offs, following the very nearly successful SingStar Dance, SingStar Guitar apes another popular physical action game genre, that of the recently downtrodden band simulation game. Taking the form of a Guitar Hero-esque Rhythm Action game for its new additions, SingStar Guitar is also playable as a karaoke game just as with any other SingStar release, and yet does not suffer from the increased price-tag one would expect.
Oly writes: SingStar Guitar is currently only available in AUS and EU as a disc, or as a DLC from the PSN. As of SingStar update version 5.0, at least in EU and AUS, the availability of playing a guitar is there, even without purchasing SingStar Guitar. You will, however, need to purchase guitar compatible tracks, or guitar upgrades for songs already owned.
SingStar Guitar's intro video gives you an idea of how Sony intends it to be played. The camera arcs around a pair of blue and red virtual fretboards as the instantly recognisable chiming riff from The Cult's She Sells Sanctuary kicks in. As we swoop past floating notes and giant volume dials a short, soundless video clip appears, showing a slightly nerdy-looking chap playing his Generic Third-Party Guitar Controller (TM) while a woman – his girlfriend, perhaps – cosies up to him, crooning into her wireless SingStar microphone. They're your archetypal SingStar couple, and the perfect audience for this guitar-based spin-off.
