Nintendo Accused of 'Bullying' in Weak Patent Dispute Over Palworld

The article discusses a claim by an intellectual property (IP) expert that Nintendo likely does not hold patents strong enough to prevent the game developer Pocketpair from creating Palworld, a game that some believe resembles Pokémon. The expert suggests that Nintendo's legal challenges against Palworld could amount to nothing more than corporate bullying, as the patents Nintendo might be relying on are not robust enough to stand up to legal scrutiny. The situation could be seen as an example of a large corporation trying to exert undue influence over a smaller competitor.

Crazy how far they are willing to go over nothing rather than tell Game Freak to get their shit together and sort the quality of the mainline games out.

Personally I'd drop the two game bullshit, make a full on complete game, and take their time making the best game they can without relying on a silly battle gimmick they'll ditch after one game. Gimmicks out of battle is what they should be focusing on, beauty contests, berry making, secret bases, the underground, Seasons, events during day / night and post game content like travelling to a new location or something.

porkChop1d 9h ago

That's the thing, this is why we're now seeing more serious competitors in the genre. Game Freak has just been coasting by, doing the bare minimum in innovation for the last 20+ years. They need to get with the times. Hire more devs, give more dev time to foster creativity, etc. But now that they can't get away with that bare minimum they're trying to sue their competitors out of existence. It's disgusting.

gold_drake1d 4h ago

been saying this since sun and moon.

gamefreak just isnt used to, still isnt used to, the console market. they did well on the handheld space but as a complete 3d developer z they fail miserable

the last two pkmn gens look like gamecube games. not to mention the bugs at launch.

but uve seen the ridiculous anount of copies sold at launch too.

Profchaos12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

Realistically though palworld Pokemon with guns featured so many themes and concepts that Nintendont
There's no way they would make a game where you could use realistic weapons or have pals slaving away.

They're not the same genre at all they just feature similar characters

FinalFantasyFanatic9h ago

I pretty much agree, two editions of the same game shouldn't even been a thing at this point. The foundations are solid, but the lack of content and having a lived in world really let the latest games down.

Profchaos1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Two editions worked way back in the day as a gimmick hey your mate has different Pokemon in blue than you have in red so trade them but nowadays it's pointless we don't have any of those limitations system links not really a thing anymore and two editions feels exploitive nowadays like they are targeting kids to double dip

badz1497h ago

why would they do that when the fanbase is still willing to buy whatever low-effort and low-cost crap they are churning out? they are out to make as much money as possible with as little investment as possible and say what you want but GF is excellent at that front mainly because the fanbase allows them to. Nintendo is saying nothing because they are making money.

posting articles from msn.com now seriously?

MaximusPrime_1d 5h ago

The article is actually Gamesradar's. MSN just used their page like a URL shortened link.

It's straight up bullying with mooney and using the government laws as a tool to do so. They should be fined.

OpenAI unveils new o1 AI model that "thinks" and it can code a video game from a single prompt

I'm very worried about where the games industry may be in a few years.

oldenjon7d ago

AI is completely unsustainable and expected to accelerate climate change. I expect government to take a harder stance on it within the next couple of decades, but by that point we may not even have a government or a gaming industry so….

Hofstaderman7d ago

When/ if it comes to this point, I have a massive collection spanning from the NES to current gen. No problem turning to retro gaming.

cthulhucultist8d ago

This is basically a more advanced model embedding the chain of thought technique by spending reasoning tokens while "thinking" before providing an output and is more suited for heavy specific tasks in coding, math and science.

I have used it for creating complex game puzzles (for role playing games) using tiered approach and multi step reasoning and it worked liked a charm.

It does not support vision at this point however or other multi modal features, nor does it generate images (no DALL-E 3 integration yet) and it has limits for plus and teams users in usage (20 and 50 messages per week respectively).

I have create an interactive guide for it for getting started here

https://view.caduceusapp.eu...

In any case, I believe that when the new models launch (GPT5 Orion, Claude Opus 3.5 and Gemini 2 along with Grok 3) we will see a big difference in gaming as well. Combined with text to video AI tools like Open AI's Sora, we will definitely see a decrease in quality in games and increase in. output, at least at the beginning.

In a few years where the models will be more fine tuned, we wont be able to tell the difference really

ZoboomafooFan7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Mostly but not 100% right. o1-preview and o1-mini both have a 20 request per minute limit. o1-preview also has a 30 message cap per week for Plus users, and there is a smaller model I mentioned earlier, o1-mini, that functions similarly on math and code problems and comes with a 50 message weekly cap for Plus users. Combined you essentially get 80 messages per week w/ Plus. I work in machine learning so I wanted to clarify those points. Also, o1 itself hasn't been released yet, just o1-preview, but evaluation results of o1 have been publicly released and are comparable to o1-preview and o1-mini. I agree with the remainder of your points!

cthulhucultist7d ago

Correct! the 30 (which is not 20 as i wrote) and 50 requests I mentioned referred to the two models which I did not quote in the same sentence so it makes sense that it reads as if I am talking about the types of users (Teams or Plus).

Besides in my guide I have this information noted down as per OpenAIs website (I already exhausted my limit but was reset by OpenAI)

Yes the OpenAI model is part of the new reasoning models and has not been released yet. We now have access (as plus/teams of API Level 5 user) to mini and preview which are quite capable but limited in the scope due to their focus on certain topics.

Since you are working on machine learning, I suppose you should be excited about the new PS5 Pro performance or the new AMD offerings

Well AI would be necessary for the sword art online VR experience ppl are expecting to exist somewhere in the future. Aka full body VR.
