2011's Most Overhyped Console Games (RunDLC)

Lots of people enjoy debating the most overrated video games of all time. For each person who praises Final Fantasy VII, Halo and Gears of War, there’s another who refuses to agree that those aforementioned hits met the hype, and that’s fine. We love these types of arguments. In this case, though, we decided to look at the most overhyped games of 2011, the potential blockbusters that may fall into the overrated category.

Overyhyped implies "put in a better light than the game itself deserves"

And since none of these games are out, how do we know they're overhyped?

Nitrowolf25374d ago

you just killed the article lol

ndibu5373d ago

It's the truth. Deny and disagree all you want, won't change anything.
Anyway, bet you this article gets more disagrees about MurderArea 3* than it does about Gears 3.
I find x360 players are less defensive and pretty mellow compared to . . .well, this...
"Look at this! What have i see?!
yeah.. a S.HIT sexbot fan make a
review of a PS3 game... Stupid
as.shole
learn how to review a game and
maybe wouldnt be a
microsh*ting fagtart"
Taken from comments section of a 8/10 review for MurderArea 2 last year.
*game name changed to protect myself

GamerSciz5373d ago

That was exactly his point. I mean these articles should have a subcategory called "I want hits". Basic description: Find all the games people are excited for and call them over hyped without ever playing them yourself.

Gaming journalism has dropped to an all-time low in my book. Not to mention the gaming community will follow you until the end until you claim their "most hyped" game isn't anything special. Then you don't get a second chance. Anyways articles like this just don't need to exist...

UNCyrus5373d ago (Edited 5373d ago )

I'm pretty sure this "journalist" (and I use that term loosely).... Just plain doesn't like games, based on the list

BiggCMan5373d ago

so did you bookmark that 8/10 review just try and make yourself sound smart in the next killzone 3 related article? damn, reviews were being made almost 2 years ago for that game. how long did it take you to find that comment and use it for this special moment of yours? instead, you make yourself sound stupid.

tacosRcool5373d ago

Aren't all these gonna sell like hot cakes?

Falloutxii5373d ago

Maybe ill take your comment more seriously if you had more than 1 bubble ok?

ScoobyDrew5373d ago

^haha aaaaaand bubbles for you!

mastiffchild5373d ago

Oh, nbidu, the MOST defensive people in the world are Halo and GT fans. Well, those games have more zealots, I guess, but Killzone? Maybe a few but no more than any other normal size game. Stop with the incessant BS.

visualb5373d ago

how can a game be deemed over hyped if it isn't even released and thus can't be judged?

and wtf is up with this ndibu guy is he on crack or something? seriously, how do you ignore people?

Hideo_Kojima5373d ago

Stupid.

The article is just stupid.

All it does is state all the possible AAA games of the year.

Buff10445373d ago

Actually, the official definition of overhyped simply means...and I quote from an actual dictionary...instead of writing "overyhyped"... "To promote or publicize to excess." You don't have to release something for it to be over hyped.

Emmettcelticfan5373d ago (Edited 5373d ago )

Good job approving "did you blow up megaton" ye we did 2 years ago old news really nice approval there keep it up (sarcasm). O and the article seems to have more comments and hits than that lame megaton article you approved, now move along fool

thehitman5373d ago

U dont know if the games are being excessively publicized because we dont know if they were worth it in the first place since they are not out yet. They could be getting all the attention they deserve I think that MGS:Rising shouldnt be on their though its not hyped at all and I think it will be an average game from what I seen so far I loved MGS4 but rising doesnt look like my thing. All the other games are all highly anticipated games and I would buy all of them if I could.

snp5373d ago (Edited 5373d ago )

"U dont know if the games are being excessively publicized because we dont know if they were worth it in the first place since they are not out yet. "

Well said.

Until something can be rated, you can't know if it's 'overrated'. Until something can rated, you can't know if that hype was justified or if it was 'overhyped'.

Playing games with those two terms to give this article validity is nonsense. The point it's a premature judgement - can't be anything but when the products aren't out - however you phrase what it's being premature about (the hype or rating). Validity of hype (rating) etc. is something that can only be judged sensibly, retrospectively.

Socrates5373d ago

Don't you have to actually play through the games before you know whether they are overhyped or not?

Besides, it's all opinion. One man's overhyped is another man's underhyped.

JeffGUNZ5373d ago

Am I the only one who thinks Medal Gear Rising, after what we saw at E3, looks incredible? Also, Gears 3? Really? He even said it's under the radar right now, so how can it be on his list? He THINKS it will gain hype, but has no facts to support his claim. What a bogus article.

likedamaster5372d ago

Ghost Recon Future Soldier <-- this is about the only title NOT overhyped. Although, I am looking forward to it.

Obviously, no one here watches sports. Otherwise, you'd have a new perspective on what overhyped means. Would you call a team 5 games into an 82 game season overhyped, or would you insist on waiting until the season's over? FYI, the first part.

Panthers5373d ago

Well would you call them overhyped 3 months before the season began? Because that would be what this article is doing.

MGRogue20175373d ago (Edited 5373d ago )

Halo: Reach ... Yeah, it's in 2010 but whatever..

Fishy Fingers5373d ago (Edited 5373d ago )

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Reach isnt a 2011 game.

Edit: Ah you've edited.

poopsack5373d ago

So any game getting constant coverage is overhyped?

Hagaf225373d ago

Yes, that seems to be the case. Seems he found all the big upcoming releases for next year, and just tagged them "overhyped". I'm looking forward to nearly all those games, and wouldn't consider them overhyped. I would say they are games worth of attention at this point.

CountDracula5373d ago

is probably gonna be descent but it's not going to be the Halo killer every ps3 fanboy hopes it will be...

Just like Killzone 2 and 1 before it. lol

Fishy Fingers5373d ago (Edited 5373d ago )

As long as it's a KZ2 killer I think most people will be happy.

westy5525373d ago (Edited 5373d ago )

Agreed, Bubbles for you.

I think KZ is important to sony for it to be a halo killer, but for its fanbase guys like us that play it and love it, it is a totally different game to Halo, so it doesnt need to be a halo killer, I loved kz2 not a fan of 1, and number 3 looks amazing. And imo I don't think its over hyped, when kz2 came out it was getting scores between 9 and 10 and imo it was worthy of that score. So I think kz3 will score well and I think ill love it as much as I loved the 2nd, but no I dont think its over hyped, I think the article is poorly written and his explanations as to why all those games are over hyped are pathetic, its like a 15 year old has written it.

SyphonFilter5373d ago

killzone is better than halo, that game is for kids.kz1 and kz2 are much better than the last 2 halo games. that is why bungie stoled the yellow/orange spark that comes out of nades fort their latest release.

LarVanian5373d ago

is probably gonna be descent
----------------------------- ------
Lol I love how you make it sound like theres a chance it'll be crap.
Killzone 2 was amazing and Killzone 3 will be no different. I don't know why you brought Halo up as well especially when there is barely anybody labelling KZ3 as a 'Halo killer'. I could care less about Halo or what it has to do with Killzone.

moparful995373d ago

Its funny how the only person to bring up the "halo killer" moniker is a member of the 1 bubble club.. I could care less how kz3 stacks up to halo.. I've never enjoyed halo so I dont even regard it in my evaluation of the killzone franchise.. Killzon3 looks to raise the bar yet again and I know that I'm going to lose a couple of months of my life into that game and thats all that matters to me.. You can keep halo 1-100...

JUDALATION5373d ago

Thats My opinion... it may not sell as much ...but the gameplay will be much better... I would take KILLZONE 2 OVER REACH if it had better controls...

There's too many games to choose from

No Metal geat solid 1,2,3,4?
No Resident evil?
No Silent hill?
No Midnight club 3?
No NfS Underground 2?
No Final Fantasy?
No Burnout 3?
No Dragon quest 8?
No Days gone?
No Ace combat?
No Tekken/Soul calibur?......
just from the top of my head

PS1 era was full of great RPGs, PS2 was racing generation i would pick top 200 and even that would be just a fraction.

FinalFantasyFanatic209d ago

30 is way too low over the entire history of Playstation, I just wouldn't be able to narrow it down that much, I would pick 100 at least.

Storm23209d ago

Yeah...really odd list. I get that it is personal preference and I love most of the games listed, but my list would definitely be different. I agree though, it would be incredibly difficult to come up with just 30.

lockedongamer1209d ago (Edited 209d ago )

I only picked first-party titles. Otherwise, I agree!

EDIT: Except for Days Gone, I don't get the love for it but you do you!

Chocoburger199d ago

I didn't like Days Gone either, it doesn't deserve to be on any best of list.

TM3 is my favorite but I'll take what they bring out gladly. Fun times back in the day and great soundtracks

Cacabunga264d ago

Last one on ps4 wasn’t good at all.
Hoping for some good reboot or remake of the first 3

Dagexon264d ago

You mean the one on ps3?

Cacabunga264d ago

Yes i do, thanks! I realized too late couldn’t edit

badboyz09265d ago (Edited 265d ago )

Lego 2K Drive features an exciting mode called Brick Brawl, inspired by Twisted Metal. Players can create, share, and upload various cars, including ones like Sweet Tooth. The game boasts thousands of custom cars, ranging from the Batmobile to the Sweet Tooth ice cream truck.

InUrFoxHole264d ago

Never understood the like for the series. Not my bag but I know a lot of gamers are clamoring for a new game and liked the TV. Series

TiredGamer264d ago (Edited 264d ago )

TM1 and 2 are time period classics. They were a bit rough, ugly, and grungy, but they felt right during the time period they were released and they scratched that early console “death match” itch before FPS games would completely swallow that market.

Many great memories with friends playing couch co-op and 1v1. Short, and quick-and-dirty gameplay that we returned to over and over. I’d buy a remake or proper remastering of the first two games day one.

InUrFoxHole264d ago

Lol, nice! I remember having the tiger handheld or watch..

FinalFantasyFanatic264d ago

I played those so much as I kid, I bought the Twisted Metal games that were on PSN as Playstation Classics, wow, they feel clunky by today's standards, they could really use the remake/remaster treatment.

UltimateOwnage264d ago

Twisted Metal: Black is when the series really hit for me. I still love that game so much. It was kind of downhill for the series after that IMO. I'd love to see the series go back to its roots, but I don't hold out a lot of hope for David Jaffe coming back from where he is these days to oversee development of a competent sequel.

Snookies12264d ago

Black was the pinnacle in my opinion. I adored TM1 and TM2, for sure. But Black brought it to a whole new level of awesome.
