DVG Show 11: Streaming: The Future of Gaming?

From the editors at www.digitalvideogamer.com

"After a dark day when Blockbuster announced it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, where will we go for game rentals? Plus, PSP 2 is in developer hands, Microsoft lacks enthusiasm in recent Kinect videos, Resistance 3 screenshots leaked and irrestistable, and will streaming game services take over?"

Who needs Blockbuster? Well, I guess the thousands they employed. That'd be a good place to start. Anyone who sees Blockbuster going under a good thing is an idiot. It shows all the weaknesses America is infected with. A weak economy. A weak president. A weak foreign policy. Blockbuster going out of business is bad news. And I hate physical media. I am all for digital distribution, but I know most people are not and most people cannot take the stand behind it. This world is headed into a dark place.

mmike8554972d ago

I essentially grew up at a Blockbuster, and in this podcast we discuss what we are left with when it comes to renting games. It is terrible that all of those people employed are now without work, and I wish Blockbuster had made the right choices to stay competitive in the rental industry. It was a very dark day when they announced they had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

darthv724971d ago

i recall it was blockbuster that had a helping hand in bluray winning the format war. They were only offering bluray movies as the HD format. No HDDVD.

Their policies on x number of day rentals I believe was their undoing. The fees and what not if it was the slightest bit late.

Streaming movies are nice and they tried their hand at that with...i cant remember the name but it was an early competitor to netflix streaming.

They could turn things around if they partnered up with redbox. That is a service that is growing fast.

rockleex4971d ago

Long ago when they still had a chance.

Anyways, streaming for the future of gaming? Ask OnLive.

Go hang out with your teabagger fox news watching friends and leave your sad, misinformed political views off of a gaming board!

Zinc4971d ago

Misinformed? Please, explain.

Silly Mammo4971d ago (Edited 4971d ago )

I would, but wouldn't that go against the statement I made above about leaving political statements off of gaming boards?

Zinc4970d ago (Edited 4970d ago )

I suppose, but you already did that with, and I quote, "Go hang out with your teabagger fox news watching friends and leave your sad, misinformed political views off of a gaming board!". That initial comment is laced with political ideology.

Keep in mind, I just want you to explain why you think he is a Fox News watcher or a teabagger (which, I assume, is a derogatory reference to the Tea Party movement).

I myself can identify with some of what the Tea Party expounds and I have no problem stating that boldly.

Also, if you think that we are not in difficult and potentially crippling times, I would say you are not paying attention to the policies that have been coming out of both the Left and the Right for the past 70 years.

to make their movies available for download in the UK on the Xbox LIVE marketplace.

The UK has no netflix or alternative...

streaming games wont take over ever

darthv724971d ago

It all depends on the name associated with it. If we are talking MS saying streaming games then the obvious majority would respond in protest. However, recently Intel was demoing something that involved cloud computing and streaming of games to a client and it was very impressive.

So I ask you, if it is backed by Intel would the feelings toward it be the same as if it is backed by MS?

darren_poolies4970d ago (Edited 4970d ago )

I use LoveFilm for my game rentals so I'm safe with my rentals. But it is a real shame that Blockbuster has went bankrupt, I used my local Blockbuster all the time until the fees got a little bit too expensive and I started using LoveFilm. Still I loved the Blockbuster store, it was nice to just go in and wonder around.

Microsoft once tried to nab LittleBigPlanet from Sony after a few drinks

It turns out that many moons ago, Microsoft once had its eye on the Sony published LittleBigPlanet series.

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

ApocalypseShadow17h ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Tody_za37m ago(Edited 36m ago)

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

What is the point of Xbox?

Xbox has repeated the same terrible mistakes for over a decade. The reason is simple: its priorities are back-to-front.

ohhh man, the press really did not like those last closures, their having a field day bashing xbox,

anyway, ive got to nip off to the shops now, i've run out of microwave popcorn.

Jingsing10h ago

Apparently the last 10 years wasn't enough to get the gaming press to notice but as soon as they touch Bethesda it is full on nuclear war. A lot of people in the gaming press seem to have this irrational hard on for Fallout and Skyrim despite the fact they are low quality poor buggy games.
I've grown tiresome of the unbalanced fandom in the gaming press for fantasy games and their ability to just forgive crap so long as it's a fantasy game RPG game all quality concerns are not an issue for them,

anast9h ago

Popcorn has been good lately.

PapaBop7h ago

Clearly this is just a big conspiracy orchestrated by the popcorn industry, Microsoft are just their puppets, every time they open their mouths, I'm forced to stock up on popcorn.

TheEroica1h ago

Yep, Microsoft and Sony are a mess. Neither have a compelling business strategy and they're not making bangers anymore.

XiNatsuDragnel1d ago

Xbox is getting rightfully roasted here

Einhander197223h ago

The only point to xbox is and always has been to take market share and money from PlayStation and Nintendo, but mostly PlayStation. It's been the goal since sweaty Steve Balmer said it himself.

ApocalypseShadow17h ago

Yup. To put Sony out of business because they thought they were a threat to their Windows business.

solideagle5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Genuinely curious: how is Sony (hardware company) threat to Windows (operating system/software company) business?

isarai21h ago

I mean the motto "xbox, the most optional console ever made" was peaked years ago, people are just now taking a step back from deepthroating Phil to see what we've all been seeing for a long time now.

P_Bomb21h ago

I’ve still got friends that main on XB. For their sake, I hope it sticks around. They’ve put everything into that ecosystem. It’s all or nothing.

I wonder if we’ll ever get back the level of competition seen during the 360/PS3 era?

NotoriousWhiz10h ago

Seems like Daddy Microsoft is trying to shut it down. Or at least bring costs under control. On the bright side, it seems likely that acquisitions are going to stop.
