Gamers lend support to widow of heroic developer

Brian Wood spent his life thrilling millions of faceless gamers, but his last moment was spent saving the lives of those he loved most.

Wood, a 33 year-old lead designer at popular game developer Relic Entertainment, was on his way back to his Washington home when his wagon was struck by an oncoming Chevy Blazer being driven by a 21 year-old woman believed to be driving under the influence. With his pregnant wife Erin in the passenger seat, Wood swerved his car to put himself directly in the path of the oncoming SUV -- a decision that ultimately cost him his life, but protected his wife and unborn child from harm. Two other passengers riding in the backseat of the Blazer were also killed.

"Brian always told me about how close-knit and wonderful the video game community was, but I had no idea until this tragedy just how special a group it really is," she writes. "From all the articles and comments, to the emails and donations, I am simply stunned and so touched by the love, kindness, and generosity shown to me and my family."

If people drink they need to be more responsible about it. Life can easily be taken away. If you plan on drinking you should not even think about driving. Take a cab or just crash out where you drank. I live close to bars so I don't even have to drive really. If I plan I drinking I always make sure to be able to crash out somewhere and if I have people over I make sure they crash out at my place and not drive. Drink responsibly people!

People is this world are so fucking stupid. There really should be a much more extensive test on driving. All the cars out there are weapons ready to be used or miss used by someone who is retarded enough to "take there sweater off while driving"

Every day people die because of car accidents, and there no "5 star security seal" that's going to help when there is a squishy human under the pressure of a car and sharp metal, going at 60 miles per hour.

You would think something would be done but no, every year thousands of 16 year old kids that don't know anything go behind the wheel.

Is that this stuff happens because of blatant stupidity not driving ability. An certain IQ score might need to be a requirement before someone's gets a driving license. If everyone was driving intelligently there would be virtually no one being killed on the road.

On Topic, I have alot of respect for this guy because he sacrificed himself to protect his pregnant wife.

There's no substitute for a good driver. And now another life is lost, and two others changed forever because of someone's ignorance or blatant disregard for human life.

Sometimes it's just comforting to know that there are people out there that feel the same way you do.

And in this case, it's comforting to know that there are people that care.

It's just not about the feeling you get from this sad story but rather what you can learn from this. May they rest in peace, feel remorseful for the wife. Can you imagine how she must have felt? I doubt many can.

If a car is coming right at me, I would swerve right. Who would actually try to avoid an accident by driving into oncoming traffic? So if his wife and kid weren't in the car, he would have swerved left?

If no one else was in the car, then yes, it would make more sense to swerve to the left in this situation.
