People are ALWAYS having trouble with every PS3 firmware. There's obviously a chance of something going wrong, as with everything but every other FW there's article:

My PS3's drive died when I was watching Inglorious Basterds on Bluray. OMG! Inglorious Basterds destroy teh PS3 drives! Makes sense.

Never once had a firmware issue. I think certain people/websites make a big issue out of even the smallest of PS3 "problems" because they'd like to believe the 360 isn't the only console with crippling issues.

Fucked up my UC1 saves. Or at least i think it did, cuz verything was fine with that game til i installed 3.00 and then UC1 would keep locking up at a certain cutscene. And it wasnt til i deleted the save that it fixed it. So i think fw3.00 corrupted my UC1 save which in turn locked up UC1 for me. Otherwise it was just pure coincidence. I was on the orginal 40GB

as believing that COD4 caused 360's to have disc read errors. It was not the game, it was just that it was played all the time and it happen to be in the drive when the drive went bad.

The game did not make the drive bad, it was spun just like other discs are spun.

My console E74'd in its 3rd month and I missed out on a week of gaming, I was pissed and I complained and it got noticed cos they included E74 into the 3 year warranty.
When my xbox scratched my Fallout 3 disc I complained and I got a replacement.

Actually the people experiencing problems with 3.42 are the potential pirates. They were locked out the PSN.

My experience with FW updates, games updates, has been pretty smooth so far. Guess I'm very lucky. Hell I even was able to log in the PSN during the so infamous ApocalyPS3.

I actually enjoy updating my PS3 FW. Always looking forward to new features. Too bad Sony is pretty slow at it.

my playstation (slim 250GB) lasted 4 days before I got the three beeps. I knew though that it had nothing to do with updates etc... it's really just a common error that happens with all electronic equipment, some people will never get it and others will. When I get my other PS3 it might last 50 yrs it's really luck of the draw.

exactly.. i had my 60gb since the day of ps3 release until 2009 without any problems.. and it was still working when i traded it in for a slim.. and ive had this about a year and a half without any problems..

but you know sometimes you buy something, it doesnt work.. you take it back to the store get a replacement and it works fine.. maybe they got bashed on the way to the store.. who knows? but to blame sony and its updates everytime something goes wrong is just dumb

folks, how do we even know that these "problems" truly even exist. Has anyone ever seen a video of a firmware bricking a console? Has anyone ever commented on this site(or any other site) that a firmware killed there ps3?Most of these articles don't even have real sources. Just "my super, secret, sources brother told me" .

and one other thing, how do we know it's not the owner's fault? they might done something stupid like turned it off while it was updating or something.

We don't really need to know if those are real problems. Just think for a moment how many PS3 are sold around the world in one day... something from 1 to 5% of those are prone to fail within one year from the day they were bought and turned on.

Every day hundreds of PS3 die... Maybe thousands in some days. It's obvious that when this day happens to be the very same day of FW update or just after, people will blame the last different thing they did, in this case would be FW update.

But truth is, if a FW update were to brick PS3s, as all PS3 receive and run the very same FW, we could expect for it to dastroy everyone's PS3s, or, at least, most PS3s around. So no, not a real problem with FW, but that don't mean all those people are liers or something.

well just bought a PS3 slim 120 GB after updating it has been a bit slow and frozed a few times, i wouldn't expect this from a new model (at kleast first day), my old PS3 my bro just took with him

Fun fact: I have personally never had an issue with a single firmware update. Not a single one from December 12, 2006 to present. I am not suggesting that no one else has ever had an issue, but I do think that perhaps firmware updates sometimes get blamed for faults that were going to happen anyway.

for some reason my PS3 refused to play any video files at all, saying they were all corrupt. A new FW was released a few weeks later which fixed the problem, so wasn't too bad :)

Anyways I haven't had problems with the update, heck the PSN Store seems to load faster for me and the only problem I have with my PS3 is the problems that come with it being used and not taking care of.

It tricks me off when people can't take care of their systems, I brought about 4 used 360's that were pack full of dust (Person said 360 is better the PS3 but they couldn't take care of it?).

This article is not entirely true. Each firmware update will have certain error conditions that it usually protects itself from (ex. if someone does something a certain way or has a certain history it would normally cause an error, but the firmware will write the data or handle the error as it happens so that the error won't happen). When the firmware updates, it's introduced to old data that could potentially already have errors for the new firmware written into it.

It happens with updates on every major system (not even just game systems). Some of them have so much going on that it's near impossible to test everything to perfection.
