PS3 Remains Unhackable Yet Again, Who's Next? Yet Again

TQcast: Ok, so most of you might have heard that there has been some development in hacking the PS3. Videos have been uploaded on the net, supposedly proving that the PS3 is now fully hackable using a chip and a USB dongle. But why oh why did they make the mistake of using a debug PS3 system?

The whole point of the exploit is to trick the PS3 into thinking it is in debug. So far PSX-SCENE, CJPC and xorloser have said that it is legit. Wait until more updates come out before jumping to conclusions.

lol. I have a modded xbox 360. It's a pain downloading 6-7gb games.

Imagine how long it would take downloading ps3 games on a 3-7mbs internet connection.

Besides, I'd never do any sort of modding/hacking on my sexy ps3. Also because Sony's developers keep giving us AAA quality exclusive after exclusive. Can't say the same about the competition :p.

rajman5421d ago

Dude Japan will be loving this...average home connections over there is 100MB, they will be downloading games like crazy soon =(
I can download 8GB of data in about 4 hours...you must have a slow connection

SOAD5421d ago

Since most PS3 multiplats are of the same size (6 to 7 gigs), then it won't matter to those who want to mod their PS3s.

This is really stupid, though. Sony hasn't really screwed over gamers this gen so why would anyone do this?

Not that you should mod your 360s, either. Just don't buy a 360 if you think MS is screwing you over. You're really hurting third party devs and publishers the most.

zeeshan5421d ago

I am sure Sony will hit these guys with different lawsuits so hard, they won't see it coming. If that's not enough, SONY is gona release a patch and probably render this dongle device useless.

As for the people who want to hack PS3 and download pirated copies, it is wayyyyy to early to start singing songs you lame ass hackers!

Thirdly, suppose that whatever I said above doesn't happen. Sony doesn't find a way around this problem, these companies win legal battle and PS3 hacking becomes as common as 360 hacking then I think it won't really matter THAT much. What it will do is skyrocket PS3 hardware sales even more (Especially in third world countries or middle east region) but it will have a negative impact on software sales.

However, lets not forget that 360 and Wii both have been hacked for a long time yet they still make profit on software sales. Who is to say Sony wouldn't do the same?

5421d ago
White-Sharingan5421d ago

@rajman- I don't think Japan really cares much for piracy, considering that's the only place where PSP games really do sell. If it weren't for Japan, I doubt third party devs like Square and Konami would be making PSP games. Where piracy is greatly loved is here in the west, even if it hurts developers and the company who made the console/handheld.

shoddy5421d ago (Edited 5421d ago )

1. can't FW update wich can't use FREE online service.

2. it shorten your ps3 life span.

3. DL 10gb is no fun, after DL yoiu need to check if it work or a virus. It'll take like a week for the right torrent. good luck updating patches.

I think that's enough reason.

it always hackable just the important thing is how long it can last.(geohot)

@pwnzter

"lol. I have a modded xbox 360"
"I'd never do any sort of modding/hacking on my sexy ps3"

So one console you don't mind modding but another you do. You don't mind giving your money to Sony but you do mind giving it to Microsoft.
YOU ARE A ***** AND SHOULD BE IN JAIL. How the hell do you have so many bubbles in N4G.

n4gno5421d ago

Don't cry lelo, without that kind of guy, xbox would have been already dead : hacked firmware for xbox = a lot of console sold = more games sold.

even if people download some games, they can't buy all the game they download, so nobody is loosing money.

MorganX5421d ago (Edited 5421d ago )

Wow. People hack/mod machines because the manufacturer screws you over??? WTF? and MS does and Sony doesn't?

Good Lord. And as for being unhackable, there's a reason "install other OS" was removed.

@n4gno
Your logic makes no sense. Modded Xboxes are permanently banned for XBL.

dabri55421d ago (Edited 5421d ago )

It's not the downloading games that will become prevalent. It's the renting/borrowing games and copying them that will. This is how it was with the original xbox when it was modded. No one minds just popping the disk in the system and copying the game.

In response to the article, Sony releases firm ware updates for the PSP all the time. That hasn't stopped the hacked community at all. Because the hack is software updatable, just like with the PSP, there will be a workaround hack a day or two after the update is released.

Hideo_Kojima5421d ago

This is no longer the 6th gen...

in this Generation of gaming online gaming is a huge part of why we play.

Any mod will be rendered useless once the next update comes out and if you have used a chip it will be even easier to identify and ban your console from conecting to PSN....

Personally I wouldn't buy a second PS3 and a mod chip just to play offline games that sometimes take days to download.

frostypants5421d ago (Edited 5421d ago )

So, your rationalization for stealing 360 games is that they aren't high enough quality for you? Do you realize how ignorant that sounds? You're no better than a shoplifter.

And yet you have all those "agrees". This is sad. People like you are *partially* why games cost so much today. And regardless, theft is theft.

Do you people think it would be cool to walk into a Gamestop and steal a game off the shelf? It's the same thing.

altimako025421d ago

you say you wouldnt mod a ps3 because it sexy, maybe if people like you wouldnt mod your 360 then maybe some of the developers would try to push the 360s limits and you would get what you call aaa exclusives. people like you are so stupid you dont even realize your stupidity.

nveenio5421d ago

I will always support Sony. They've honestly won my loyalty this generation. I have no problem buying any game I want.

Hacking sucks, I hate it personally because its made my powerful pc play only console ports, but COME ONE PEOPLE. THe way you all defend these companies is like theyre sending you money in the mail...just stop. STOP. its too childish

Aquanox5420d ago (Edited 5420d ago )

That the...

There are multiple videos showing retail Playstation 3s not debug units. Man PS guys are so desperate to prove the hack is false that take anything that remotely explains how it could be fake as granted.

Edit: Check the comments in the original article. Everyone is jumping at the guys poor reasoning and research @ stating this hack is fake.

Viddharto5420d ago

What about me? I have a 0.98 Mbit connection. So, you can be happy with what you have :D

zag5420d ago (Edited 5420d ago )

Actually this will be the main reason why game shops won't exist soon, everything will needed to be downloaded via offical channels can't do that they you don't have the game.

Signed files will be the next thing once downloading only comes in.

I can't see this dongle working after a month or so, as sony will end up doing a new update which will have a signed PS3 rev #, so if your PS3 isn't signed off then you won't get online play sony has blocked all online play bar for the newest PS3 update.

also it can't copy a file over that is over 4 gig, a game dev could just dump in a 12gig or larger file and still be ok as they could just use a 100gig bluray.

Sony and the game devs will pretty much make it pointless then what happens when the game require a must be installed official update that they release on game disks and quitting that install quits you back to the menu.

This has been released in Australia as a court case against a mod shop down the road from me in fact I'm thinking of asking them about this modcip release and seeing what they say about all this.

was the actual shop MS or sony sued and they ended up winning as the court ruled that PS1 and XBox mods can be sold as they as they aren't sold with a machine, as by themselves they can't do anything.

well it would be nice to download free games but sony can just release FW update

jay25421d ago

I say hacking PS3 is not wise.
1. can't FW update wich can't use FREE online service.

They say you can update and this blocks the update checker, and you could also remove the dongel (which is also going to be updated just like the PSP's CFW :(.

2. it shorten your ps3 life span.

How?

3. DL 10gb is no fun, after DL yoiu need to check if it work or a virus. It'll take like a week for the right torrent. good luck updating patches.

You don't download them, you buy/rent and rip them to a hard drive.

I think that's enough reason.

it always hackable just the important thing is how long it can last.(geohot)

It's say that it's happened and we all know hackers just won't go online for an updated FW, even if Sony can bring one out. This is something I'd never consider doing my self.

are sony fanyboys so butt hurt by this news lol? like its taking money outta your pocket? im gonna mod mine...if i cant get online with it..i could careless....psn is a total noob online service...takes me 20 mins to download small demos that i download on xbox live in 2 mins...meh only reason i have a ps3 was for ..well so far 2 games that i enjoyed...mgs4 and god of war 3...so downloadable ps3 exclusives here i come :)

Jazz41085420d ago

Dude if I felt it was moral I would totaly agree with you. I do agree with you on everything else about the ps3's lack of decnt games and crappy online and molasses slow downloads, but I dont agree with breaking the law. What most people will do is have a second ps3 to mod and one to play normal on. With the money they can make selling games it will pay for itself quickly. Most people view me as a 360 fanboy as I raley say anything nice about the ps3 but you must undertand I work for a gaming store and own both systems and gave them both there equal shots. Its not that I like MS more then Sony its just there online is superior as well as 90% of the multiplats and there downloads are so quick you dont even have a second to blink. The ps3 on the other hand has free online but thats about what its worth, and painfully slow installs to almost all of its games and graphic wise its not that much better then the 360 as the guys that made the graphics chip both say they are almost equal. I believe that Sony utilizes the tech better then Ms devs so you have seen some graphicaly good games but it suffers from alot of framrate issues as having split memory is a decision im sure Sony will never do again.

these hackers are really getting on my nerves, sony, release the hounds on these losers.

MexicanAppleThief5421d ago (Edited 5421d ago )

Agreed. Pirates are killing the PC, NDS gaming market. This hack won't matter too much anyway, we're due a firmware update and this hardly seems challenging to the PS3 devs.

Skizelli5421d ago (Edited 5421d ago )

"Pirates are killing the PC"

If that was really the case, how do you explain StarCraft 2's success? Piracy has been happening on the PC for decades, and yet StarCraft 2 still outsold ALL PC software, which further proves my point that if you make a good game, people will buy it. Even if it doesn't have LAN support. :P You can't even play the pirated release on Battle.net. But even if you could, I doubt it would have made a difference, as many of those sales were from pre-orders. Pirates aren't killing anything, the developers are just looking for a way to make a profit, and they found it in this DLC/digital download craze. Long before that even took off, PC gamers were playing professional quality mods, expansions and other additional content, both official and user-generated, for free. Not so anymore. Now we're slapped with $15 map packs and this used game fiasco. So who exactly are the greedy ones?

Da One5421d ago

made by the good folks at Blizzard...

You cannot use one single solitary game to debunk entire argument that piracy is killing pc gaming....nds and psp(who got it worse than anybody else)

Skizelli5421d ago (Edited 5421d ago )

I can and I did, because it's true. But if you want more examples:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

People have this misconception that piracy hurts developers when it really doesn't. If that were true, the gaming industry wouldn't be thriving. A penny lost isn't necessarily a penny earned otherwise. People pirate for various reasons. If anything, piracy helps promote their games. Whether piracy is right or wrong, that's not the point I'm trying to make. StarCraft was hugely successful because it's a good game. You said it yourself. If a game is worth buying, people will buy it. Period. Piracy can't touch that. Most companies treat honest consumers like criminals. They don't care about you, they just want your money. There's exceptions to the rule, though, like Ironclad Games, who released Sins of a Solar Empire without any copy protection, trusting that people would buy their game because they believed it was good enough.

And how is it hurting NDS and PSP exactly? They're both doing well. You do realize that piracy has existed on past handheld systems, right? Ever heard of a flash cart? Not to mention that Nintendo is super anal about piracy. You won't see any Nintendo ROMs on any respectable torrent site in fear of Nintendo's wrath.

Elven65421d ago

The sales lost to piracy are attempted to be recouped on other platforms or through legitimate sales. 1.5 million people may have bought StarCraft II, but how many pirated it? Just because a game sold more than it was pirated doesn't give it an automatic pass to show piracy is overblown on a system.

And how about games like Demigod which reviewed pretty well, had no DRM, and was pirated like no tomorrow? The day after launch only 18, 000 people bought the game and over 120,000 people were playing it online, how does that happen?

http://www.gamebanshee.com/...

Companies like EA, Valve and Blizzard can take the piracy hit, but what about companies like Stardock, Paradox, etc?

You say piracy isn't hurting systems like the PSP, but when is the last time you saw a PSP game in the top 10 or even 20 NPD/European Chart Get?

Da One5421d ago (Edited 5421d ago )

Very few PC games are doing well, only companies with extremely huge cult-like followings (Blizzard, Valve, Sims[EA]) are doing well on the PC.

1.5 million in one day can not offset the millions of games illegally pirated on the PC, same for the PSP and NDS. Companies need to push more games than that(which i'm sure Blizz has)

Dissidia 1.8 sold. 1.8 million sold does not offset the 10's of millions of psp games that have been downloaded since piracy's inception on to the system. Is it a success maybe, but the 5 million people who downloaded it illegally kind of makes piracy hard to ignore what should have been.

Piracy has hurt the video games industry otherwise, there wouldn't be DRM, devs trying to stop it at every turn, and Publishers abandoning systems(PSP). There is no misconception on the issue you're just delusional.

Jazz41085420d ago

Has it all ready been a week? lol im just kidding.

Skizelli5420d ago (Edited 5420d ago )

"And how about games like Demigod which reviewed pretty well, had no DRM, and was pirated like no tomorrow? The day after launch only 18, 000 people bought the game and over 120,000 people were playing it online, how does that happen?"

Perhaps that's because it lacked advertising? I'm not even familiar with it, and I'm a video game whore. Can't blame piracy just because a game doesn't sell well. There's plenty of other factors involved.

"You say piracy isn't hurting systems like the PSP, but when is the last time you saw a PSP game in the top 10 or even 20 NPD/European Chart Get?"

How often do handheld games make it in the top 10 or 20 of anything? Again, other factors involved.

"Skizelli wants to hit the disagree button and pretend he doesn't understand"

Kind of like you? No need.

"Very few PC games are doing well, only companies with extremely huge cult-like followings (Blizzard, Valve, Sims[EA]) are doing well on the PC."

That's because the majority of games being released on PC right now are complete and utter garbage. The other games you mentioned only prove my point even futher: If it's worth buying, people will buy it. Why is it so difficult to understand that?

"1.5 million in one day can not offset the millions of games illegally pirated on the PC, same for the PSP and NDS. Companies need to push more games than that(which i'm sure Blizz has)"

It doesn't have to when you consider the fact that many of those downloads were from people who have no intention or capability of buying the game in the first place. So technically it's not a loss to begin with. Does it make it right? That's another debate. My point here is that people who are completely against piracy usually don't understand it inside and out. You generalize it as stealing, and it is. But it also gives people the opportunity to try new games with the intent of buying them if it's worth buying. It also gives smaller devs more exposure. It's basically free advertising. The real criminals are the ones who sell pirated software.

"Dissidia 1.8 sold. 1.8 million sold does not offset the 10's of millions of psp games that have been downloaded since piracy's inception on to the system. Is it a success maybe, but the 5 million people who downloaded it illegally kind of makes piracy hard to ignore what should have been."

Again, there's no guarantee that those 10 million had any intention of buying the game in the first place. The "what should have been" is wishful thinking and a sense of self-entitlement. The fact of the matter is very few games are worth $60. Piracy has been going on for so long, and yet developers like Blizzard and Valve have thrived. How do you explain that? Oh wait, you already did -- which again is the point I've been trying to make here -- they make good games. Good games sell. Piracy is going to happen regardless, but it doesn't hinder the success of a popular franchise, as games like SC2 and MW2 have proven.

Elven65420d ago

Skizelli: Demigod was actually pretty anticipated by many people, especially by the DOTA community. It was actually advertised pretty well.

Just recently, Dragon Quest XI or what ever the latest one is on DS placed in the Top 10, Lego Harry Potter DS did as well. A few years after launch there were PSP games charting too, not so much now asides from Japan.

Skizelli5420d ago (Edited 5420d ago )

@Elven6: I'm not denying that it was an anticipated game, I'm just saying I never saw anything about it, and I'm a RPG and RTS fan. It must have been one of those games that fell through the cracks for people like me. As for its review scores, they range anywhere between 50% and 92% with a 76% overall on Metacritic. That could explain why it didn't sell too well.

And regarding game sales for handhelds, I never said they don't make the charts, but it's not often in the West.

A couple of corrections for my previous statement: "further," "but it doesn't hinder the success of a popular franchise, like StarCraft or Modern Warfare." (Sorry, I'm anal.)

But is not Hacked via Hardware like Wii or Xbox 360, that is the way Geohot was trying to do on PS3.

I mean, Hacking the PS3 on Hardware, is way harder.

This USB with the software, is different method and I believe can be patched or something to prevent, because is Software.

shoddy5421d ago

hardware hack last longer.

Look at satalite tv hack, pay $500 for just 2 month then got zap then update then zap again. damn annoying.

sikbeta5421d ago

WOW! so this is Lame then, if teh hackz is by Software, it'll last only like a week before Sony come out with FW 3.50 disabling this lame hackz, lol what a waste of freaking time...

Yeah but then again because its software they can also update to by pass said patches. It will be a constant struggle.

Thats good to hear but if it has been hack I hope Sony patches this loophole soon. Death to Pirates.

Edit: I dont care if they remove another feature for a good cause, the less money Sony looses the more money Naughty Dog has for Uncharted 3

Sunny_D5421d ago

Careful what you wish for. Sony might remove another feature. -_-

mushroomwig5421d ago

To be fair, Sony can hardly remove the USB functionality of the PS3.

rdgneoz35421d ago

Could they just remove the systems ability to be a debug PS3 through a patch? Won't hurt customers at all, they'll just have to work out something for real developers.

sikbeta5421d ago (Edited 5421d ago )

Hmmm... obviously they can't remove the USB, the more important reason of why is because all of us use the usb ports to charge the DS3s batteries, but Sony is smart and will apply the Firmware hammer to kill every lame attempt at hackz...

karl5421d ago

i was wondering how the hell would we charge our controllers without usb ports

haha thats why i doubt they will take it that far...

ikkeweer5421d ago

how could anyone connect their ps-eye?
So no, they could never remove the usb ports

TheTeam065421d ago (Edited 5421d ago )

It's still a pain to have to do everything you have to do in order to successfully steal from the poor (developers) and give to the poorer (us). We're trying to save money and the devs are trying to keep their heads above water. To be honest, I think we're both killing each other with the price of games and the piracy issues.

We can go broke trying to feed our gaming hobby or save money by not paying the people who make our favorite games..... in fact, you're saving so much money, that you won't ever have to spend money on games again... considering developers won't have enough of it to entertain you.

:(

red2tango5421d ago

You make a very good point. I remember PS2 games dropped in price a year or 2 later. Some games in Canada went up in price to 69.99 There are some games I regret purchasing but I'm glad I bought Uncharted 2 and supported the best PS3 devs on the planet!

jerethdagryphon5421d ago

even if it was real i wouldnt do it why not cause i dont have the cash, but i will not support anything that leads to piracy, sonys devs are good they earned there money, and regardless what people say , thats all this backup tool is for, rent and rip.... its a sad immoral world

AMD is really building hype around their unique partnership with Microsoft to help and build an advanced and seamless Xbox ecosystem across all Xbox consoles and devices.

I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimized chips" though? Seems ambitious.

Next year´s Xbox Showcase already looks promising and exciting. Here´s hoping they deliver.

They had best show 3yrs in a row. Heading for another

VenomUK3d ago

Obscure_Observer said “I wonder what she meant by "full roadmap of gaming optimised chips" though? Seems ambitious.” To me, I interpret this to mean rather than having a couple of X/S products for launch and a handheld there is a longer term plan to release new products with higher specs at timed intervals. I’m speculating of course, but this could mean a spec bump every year or two, so that even if the PS6 or Steam Deck Home is released a year after ‘Xbox’ Microsoft can release an updated model that has a higher spec.

Agent752d ago

But Microsoft forgot the games.

KwietStorm_BLM2d ago

It's X3D chips for console. Everyone knows this. And it's been rumored in the PS6 forever.

Ganif2d ago

Correct.

"Sony's PlayStation 6 reportedly will feature an AMD semi-custom APU with a Zen 5 CPU and UDNA GPU, capable of 4K 120FPS and 8K 60FPS gaming. The console will include X3D cache and advanced AI upscaling technology."

"It's X3D chips for console. Everyone knows this. And it's been rumored in the PS6 forever."

I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released.

Notellin2d ago

You should have just lead this comment with the fact that you have zero understanding of technology in the consoles and instead have a Toms Hardware online forum level of education.

"I’m speculating of course, but this could mean a spec bump every year or two, so that even if the PS6 or Steam Deck Home is released a year after ‘Xbox’ Microsoft can release an updated model that has a higher spec."

Very interesting theory. Still not sure how MS would actually make it work.

KwietStorm_BLM2d ago

"I doubt that AMD´s CEO would waste her time making this huge and important partnership announcement over a tech that will be 7 years old by the those next gen consoles will be released."

How old is the tech in consoles? It's not a huge announcement. It's marketing and you know it is.

Obscure_Observer1d 17h ago (Edited 1d 17h ago )

"How old is the tech in consoles? It's not a huge announcement. It's marketing and you know it is."

Dude, what I know for certain is that a tech as old as X3D chips which is actually *older* than both PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, is hardly the reason behind this new partnership between AMD and MS to build new *custom silicon* for next generation of consoles.

And yes it´s a huge announcement since AMD is working closely with MS to co-develop custom SoC which will allow backwards compatibility across all MS´s next gen devices allowing seamless integration between devices and full backwards compatibility across all generations of Xbox consoles.

I also know is that this announcement don´t have anything to do with Playstation and their strategy with AMD for the PS6, so stop comparing the two pretending that you know what´s going on, because you clearly don´t.

If Sony is working on something remotely similar, that´s remain to be seen.

Some odd, deliberate wording, no branding, not 'Xbox consoles, Xbox handhelds' specifically, feels and sounds like they're building towards hardware that anyone can be used or licensed to/by themselves and other manufacturers.

Multiplatform software and hardware 'Xbox/AMD APU'.

I guess you missed Sarah Bond´s next generation Xbox announcement this week, were she clearly states:

"I´m thrilled to share that we´ve established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices, including, *our* next generation *Xbox consoles*."

But hey, I don´t think you´re entirely wrong, maybe MS will build their own Xbox consoles while licencing other manufactures to build and sell their own Xbox branded consoles. Who knows

I think you watched the wrong video. It's below the description, or you can watch it directly on YouTube.

The marketing behind this is so heavy that I worry about the actual outcome. Why are they just not showing us the product, why all this talking in market speak?

Lightning773d ago

Probably because the next xbox isn't ready to release yet?

The marketing and rumors seem to be heavy out of no where. The rumor was a 27 release but it maybe it could be 26 new console launch instead.

Who knows.

There PR is alrways super heavy handed. No one is acutally buying an Xbox as is.
Also it is very early to be talking so much about a next gen console.

Obscure_Observer2d ago

There´s a lot of people interested on Xbox Next and its ability to run games from major stores like Steam.

We know that the PS6 is just around the corner as well, but so far, no news on what it might improve over the PS5 or PS5 Pro.

However, Sony already made public that their priority and actual focus is the PS6. So its not "very early" to talk about next gen when the very console manufactures are talking about it.

The score for the first Plants Vs Zombies is such great, iconic music that it has a timeless quality. Not quite the level of Minecraft, but wonderful in its own right.
