StarCraft 2 sales blitz a success: sales crush console games

There may be some flaws in StarCraft 2, but the market doesn't seem to care: the game has taken the number one sales slot in the United States in July, well above the best-selling console games. In fact, if you take the sales of NCAA Football 11 on both platforms and combine them, you get 692,000 units sold. Single-platform title StarCraft 2 sold 721,000 units.

Pathetic flamebait title is pathetic.

Congrats though, good game.

Cueil5405d ago

considering we're likely to see at least two game add a zero on the end of that for first week sales

InfectedDK5405d ago

Well how many games sell that well for PC then? I see games all the time sell well on consoles.. The reason some few games sell well is that they are the only ones surviving..

The games that sell well for PC is Blizzard games the most..
But you see games like Sims, Diablo, WoW, StarCraft and some others sell well everytime.. But new IP's on PC doesn't sell well often though the game may be a great game.. Some does but not so many.. That's what I think.. Games sell better on consoles..

faraany3k5405d ago

Dude look at ur ALAN WAKE, CRACKDOWN,FORZA,UNCHATRTED...t hese are exclusives that sell shit. U know even Stalker on PC sold more then Alan wake and crackdown. The problem is lack of awareness. And console only sell few titles like HALO, something from ROCKSTAR and a few sequels of old gen.

God_Of_Epicness5405d ago

Uncharted 1 sold 3.5 million along with Uncharted 2. Killzone 2 sold 2.5 million. Halo 3 sold 13 million. Gears of War 2 sold 5.8 million. Gears of War 1 sold 6 million! GT4 sold 12 million! GT1 sold 10 million! GT3 sold 14 million! MGS4 sold 5 million! Need i go on?

Only PC games sell well right? The only thing that bulks the sales on the console division is HALO!

/s

Funny how you mentioned Uncharted, cos you don't know how much the name "Uncharted" can sell, my friend.

Gago5405d ago (Edited 5405d ago )

with all due respect to SC2, its nothing compared to MW2, Halo, GT, Mario ect sales

kraze075405d ago

Ummm how long have those games been out?

lace5405d ago (Edited 5405d ago )

Kraze I don't see what you are trying to prove, the list of games Gago presented are both older and younger then Starcraft's franchise history.

kraze075405d ago

My point is SC2 hasn't even been out for a month and it already has sold a large number of copies. What I forgot to point out was that MW2, and the first 2 Halo games are multiplat while SC2 is selling so much as a PC exclusive.

Baka-akaB5405d ago

Mario , halo , gt or some other exclusives do as good if not better at release too , even if you wanted to exclude multiplatform games .

God_Of_Epicness5405d ago

The problem is...there was an article the other day that said Starcraft 2's sales in the first day will be more than MW2's. That's a bold claim and as proven, it is not true. I hate hypocrites.

Gago5405d ago

first day sales alone from those games are much higher than SC2 :\

PopEmUp5405d ago

You guys play sale, I play games deal? :D

kraze075405d ago

First day sales may have been higher for those other games but it still hasn't been over a month since the game was released and already SC2's sales are estimated to be over 11 million.

Anways PopEmUp is right I don't play sales, I play games. I was just giving SC2 the credit it deserves.

A highly anticapated Console game usually sells like 2 million first day, wait till games like Cod, AC:Brotherhood, Reach, GT5 comeout and you'll see.
Starcraft 2 was highly anticapated and didn't even make it to a million.

faraany3k5405d ago

DUDE the sale figures you are seeing are just for AMERICA alone and that to of only RETAIL. Half of them come from digital downloads. Plus starcraft 2 is the most pirated game of the year. You dont know the extent of its owesomeness. Go play HALO rip off every year.

Newtype5405d ago (Edited 5405d ago )

It has only been 5-6 years, and Korea's yearly sporting event....

DORMIN5405d ago

I Lol'd at title. Nice flamebait.

Why are they saying it like SC2 wasn't going to be a best seller. Its f*cking Starcraft part 2.

Alos885405d ago

The scary thing is that this is both this year's most pirated PC game AND the best selling PC game of the year so far. That's a lot of players!

Sez 5405d ago

I just pick this game up on saturday. This is by far one of the best RTS game I played by far I've played for my pc.it definately deserves the sales. Can't wait to get off work and play it when I get home. Great game IMO

'StarCraft: Remastered', 'StarCraft II' Now Available on PC Game Pass

This week, Blizzard Entertainment dropped both 'StarCraft: Remastered' and 'StarCraft II Campaign Collection' into PC Game Pass.

meganick206d ago

Hopefully these get released on Switch and Playstation, along with Age of Empires. There’s a severe lack of good RTS games on both those platforms.

waytoobad205d ago

if only they didn't raise the price 500% last year.

Let the COD on GamePass experiment begin!
I would think their quarterly revenue will take a hit compared to a year ago, but will maybe make up for it throughout the year as the monthly GP subs keep coming in

pwnmaster3000230d ago

Was up with call of duty man?
I downloaded cod on gamepass and for some reason I cannot access the game.

darthv72230d ago

just curious what version? There are some that you can pre-load, but they wont work until their release date later this month.

pwnmaster3000230d ago

I have to redownload it again for the 3rd time to check.
I ended up just deleting it to make room for other games after the second time.

It was on Xbox game pass, I didn’t know there was other versions. I just downloaded everything, but sadly I couldn’t even access the game. Maybe 3rd time the charm. I’ll download it again.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH230d ago

It’s not out yet man unless you’re talking about MW3.

pwnmaster3000230d ago

I’m talking about mw3. For some reason I could not get it to work.

just_looken230d ago

On xbox there is the last gen/current gen versions pc though you could also get a xbox version.

When that new forza first came out for one day they had the xbox version on the pc store i was like ? what it was odd.

On xbox you can easily download the one version of a game instead of the series version so you run into issues on your series console.

pwnmaster3000229d ago

Because a game won’t run after I download it??
Man your kids must hate your @ss if that’s how you think.

It's going to be very interesting to follow up on how the new entry of CoD will perform at the box office, player numbers and distribution of Xbox, PC and PS versions this year.

DivineHand125230d ago

I got excited thinking they ported StarCraft to consoles but it's just the PC version. Also, I thought Starcraft 2 was already free to play.

TheColbertinator230d ago

I'm certain it is going to be the Campaign Collection version.

$15 horse for WoW made more money than StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty

Jason Hall, currently an indie developer and former Blizzard employee, has been sharing some really interesting stories from his long career in the industry for a while now. Some of them are truly insightful, while others may seem depressing.

I’m a little shocked that StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty sold only around 6 million copies. The original StarCraft did over 11 million. Maybe Blizzard was too leisurely in releasing StarCraft 2? Starcraft 2 came out 12 years after it’s predecessor.

Plague-Doctor27565d ago (Edited 565d ago )

Im surprised too. Starcraft was still a huge name in 2010. It was kinda the only new RTS around and other genres like MOBAs hadn't really kicked off yet. I do remember at the time sentiment around the game was
pretty angry the game was being split into 3 but I doubt that would have impacted sales to that degree

Sciurus_vulgaris565d ago

For a long time I believed StarCraft II sold on par or better than its predecessor. There was so much hype for the game. Plus it had a pretty strong E-Sports scene for a few years.

Myself and half a dozen friends all bought StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty and played it religiously for a full year. While I bought the expansions, most of my friends did not. RPGs seem to be a generally low selling genre.

Nerdmaster565d ago

I'm not shocked at all. This was an early example of Blizzard being greedy. Instead of releasing a complete experience, splitting Starcraft 2 in 3 parts so it could make us purchase it 3 times if we wanted to know the whole story and play story mode with the other races.

Sciurus_vulgaris565d ago

I originally had that stance. However, Wings of Liberty, was just as long, if not longer than StarCraft 1. The expansions were of decent length too and added a good amount of additional content.

il-JumperMT565d ago

and people wonder why we are having mtx in everything. i blame the people who actual buy them.

Nerdmaster565d ago

It's interesting he used Brazil as an example of the importance of regional pricing. Nowadays many companies on Steam are setting their prices in Brazil as high as, if not more than, their price in USA. I simply refused to buy a few games when I noticed that's the case.

Extermin8or3_565d ago

This right here is the fucking problem.
