Remember When?: Multiplayer Was Exclusively Offline

DualShockers writes, "I know that internet in gaming has been around in various forms since forever. So I'm going to rephrase my title and correct it by asking this: Remember when console multiplayer gaming was still something that seemed light-years away? I'm talking about the early 90's! I'm talking about when you still needed a multitap to play with more than two players! I'm talking about being around actual people! Yeah, people still do LAN parties and go over each others houses. But I'm talking about a time when playing online wasn't even an option! Remember those days?"

The good 'ol days of playing titles like Goldeneye 007, Halo: Comabat Evolved (Before Xbox Connect), and others. Having friends over and breaking night while consuming tons of junk food was fun. It was even better seeing your friends throw temper-tantrums live. Oh, how I miss those days...

qface644996d ago

i remember those days
back then i actually really liked playing mutiplayer it was allot of fun

everything now a days is online and it just isn't as fun anymore

wollie4996d ago

totally agree! i really dislike playing online. I'd rather play single player or with friends in the same room. unfortunately everyone is so freaking in love with online nowadays

Prototype4996d ago

I prefer offline, however playing online does have a big advantage - I was able to meet other people who played a lot of the game games without hearing constant complaints about being better

Vlaitor4996d ago

Dah Comon, that was like 10 years ago, ain't to far...

wait.. SHIT I'M OLD !!

Yeah I thought the same thing, I have been gaming since the days of NES about 20 years ago.. HOLY SHIT! I just realized that I have been gaming for 20 FREAKING YEARS! I am 25 and I started with Super Mario Bros. NES when I was 5 years old.

BX814996d ago

Now that's gaming! I remember sitting in my friends house about 12 of us chilling taking turns in Street Fighter. Or pulling all nighters just to get no where in battle toads! I enjoy online gaming today but nothing will come close to the memories of me and my bro side by side on some atari games. My most memorable games of all were for the NES though. Super Mario 3, Cabal and TMNT!

Ninferno4996d ago

Warp Pipe was my first ever console online experience.

JoelT4996d ago

The hay days of Goldeneye on the N64 will be missed!

madara0sama4996d ago

Don't forget Conker's Bad Fur Day and all those SNES beat em up games.

Prototype4996d ago

Mario Kart 64, and unlocking no vehicle mode in Star Fox 64, or beating Dr Bosconovich in Tekken 3

Hitman07694996d ago

TimeSplitters 2 was pretty rad as well!

But really once I played Quake III Arena I knew there was no turning back, Online is here to stay!

Ninferno4996d ago

i really like timesplitters 2. i dont know why i ever sold it...

Hitman07694996d ago

Dude same here man. Same with Resident Evil : Dead On. I had the guncon and the multi=tap and regret selling all of that stuff!

tdrules4996d ago

Timesplitters online properly would be absolutely stunning ;__;

Mista T4996d ago

my friend had the third timesplitters and we would play it all the time on his ps2 on splitscreen, one of the funnest game series to ever release. custom maps were great too.

If only Sony would create a play, create, share fps game that played like Timesplitters that has splitscreen play, splitscreen online play, LAN, normal online play, etc. The game would be instant classic.

table4996d ago

It's why I'm so gutted free radical went under. I was dying to see what Timesplitters 4 could do in the online department.

I remember playing Goldeneye, Smash Bros, and Mario Cart 64.

Three of us on an old beat up sofa. Drinking Jim Beam, eating fish and chips and playing N64 till about 3:00AM.

Good times.

DualShockers 2010 GOTY Awards - The Genres

"It’s that time of year again. The time for us to think back on the games that came out this year and make the difficult decision as to which ones caught our collective attentions the most, which games really deserve to be a “Game of the Year”. We don’t go by sales, popular opinion or take the lazy way out and just let one title run rampant and win the majority of awards. We thought about each category, each game, and made our decision based on that. We attempted to represent all game play styles, both Eastern and Western titles and titles from a wide variety of consoles when deciding on the ultimate Game of the Year. However, before we get to that, let’s check out more specific groupings.

For our next bit of Game of the Year goodness, we’ll focus our attention on the genres, and which games we thought were stand-outs in each specific area, regardless of platform. Keep in mind, all the nominees were awesome, as well, but only one could be chosen in each category!"

There were a few surprising choices in there, but nice to see a varied list rather than what you would almost expect to see. <3 Super Meat Boy so much, glad to see it getting more attention all over the place still.

booni34856d ago

Well rounded winners at least. Not the same clean sweepers I've been seeing everywhere else.

thevokillist4856d ago

Definitely a good mix of stuff though. 2010 was a good year for gaming, I'm excited to see what's in store for 2011.

allenhpark4856d ago

I don't think anyone could really argue with the choices here.

Danl4856d ago

Really good mix of stuff here. Glad BLOPS didn't win anything :P

ShockCast Episode 40 - "Everyone Is Biased... So Quit Your Whining"

DS writes, "We did it! We’ve made is all the way to the big 4 – 0, but does that mean we’ll be slowing down at all? Absolutely not! The main topic for this week’s ShockCast was inspired from the backlash we received for a recent review of ours. Usually when things like this happen, people who disagree with the score you gave it like to throw the word “biased” around like it’s going out of style. We decided to put that magical word under the DualShockers microscope and concluded that…. EVERYONE IS BIASED, and if we (and others like us) weren’t “so biased” the world of gaming news and opinions would be a very boring place be."
