Drake Passing The Torch To Shepard

Ironstar: Last year, Nathan Drake obnoxiously won "Game-of-the-Year" by a no contest. Despite his arguable egotistical attitude, Drake has everything to be proud of. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was hands down the best title of last year, and possibly years to come.

The thing is, Uncharted 2 is the best game of this generation.
We've seen God of War 3, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Heavy Rain, Super Mario Galaxy 2... and guess what? Uncharted 2 puts all of them to shame. I think the only game that can dethrone Uncharted 2 is Uncharted 3.

Darkstorn5017d ago

How could you forget the best game of this generation, Metal Gear Solid 4?

SaberEdge5017d ago

Naw, MGS4 was great, but Uncharted 2 was so much better in my opinion.

I won't say it puts all those games to shame, the way HorsePowerr says, but it is definitely the most well rounded and polished of any of those games.

What I mean is, not only is it an incredible game experience, but the sheer amount of features and quality is unmatched. No other game combines the quality of graphics, story, characters, gameplay, multiplayer modes and co-op modes at such a high level.

Eamon5016d ago

Uncharted 2 definitely is a candidate for best game of this generation. But there are also quite a few out there that could dethrone it. Like MGS4, Portal, Braid.

Most people seem to love the games that concentrate on sheer scale or epic cinema style action. I personally think, it's the most creative and original games that deserve to stand on top.

Uncharted 2 does not put Super Mario Galaxy 2 to shame. SMG2 stands on its own without the need of powerful technology or even a decent HDTV.

All the games you mentioned are amazing, and deserve to be in the same league as Uncharted 2. I think maybe your problem is that you like a certain console a bit more than it's competitors...

Edit:

What is wrong with N4G these days? Is it me or is it horribly buggy lately? Sometimes I can't even get on the main page and when I tried to add this reply, it froze. I refreshed and got a pop-up saying " http://www.n4g.com says: Hmm something went wrong..."

Edit 2:

Come guys, at least TRY and prove me wrong... Let's have a fair and non-fanboyish debate. I'm sure some of you N4G commentators are capable of having a rational discussion about games. C'mon.

Blacktric5017d ago

"I'm sure some of you N4G commentators are capable of having a rational discussion about games. C'mon."

You came to the wrong place actually. I'd like to welcome you to the kingdom of trolls where PS3 fanboys talks nothing but how Uncharted 2 is the greatest game of all time and other platforms' fanboys does the same with their platforms' games. You can't have a decent discussion here without getting called "douchebag, asshole or retard". You want to have a decent discussion? Go to a website where admins and mods actually do work unlike here.

Lf_sIcKmAn5017d ago

Uncharted 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 are both equally the best games for PS3, ME2 for Xbox360 and Galaxy 2 for Wii (Until Zelda comes along)...

Stop this nonsense and fighting... gets you nowhere... just buy the one you enjoy the most...

and by the way... the games I mentiones are only MY opinion but many people feel the same way.

games4fun5017d ago

I consider mario and uncharted in two very different genres. its like comparing a disney/pixar movie which are very good to watch and well crafted to an action adventure with amazing effects we've never seen before.

they are both good movie/genres, but this whole discussion revolves around goty which has only been handed to not only great games with awesome gameplay. But games which are pushing the technical level or are at least around it. Which by your own admission Mario is not.

although i am sure some sites will undoubtedly give Mario the nod.

Personally i don't really care too much i've had fun playing them all.

lightningsax5016d ago (Edited 5016d ago )

Careful, games4fun. Your name implies that you would know something about a game being bigger than the sum of its parts - what makes a game fun isn't necessarily the best graphics, sound, mechanics, whatever.

SMG2 is a very different way of making a marquee game this generation - take all the back-end stuff from the last game, and focus almost solely on ingenuity in level design. It's a subversive idea that goes against the "Bigger, faster, stronger" idea of pushing better graphics with each sequel.

It's a good sign - despite the fact that Xbox 360's and PS3's aren't getting any more powerful, we may be looking forward to games with more money invested in creativity over brute force - stuff that's more about fun than frame rate, not because the graphics aren't good, but because that part of the equation is already in place.

Not that stunning graphics aren't great - I loved Uncharted 2 because I hadn't felt so close to the Himalayas in my life - good graphics can help suspend disbelief, but it's okay to not have those.

Luzce5016d ago (Edited 5016d ago )

+ bubbles Well Said

Video games need not cutting edge graphics to be amazing, but when an already good game gets those as well then the game becomes exceptional.

Nevertheless, I'm sure you'll find plenty of people who'll prefer Valkyria Chronicles over FFXIII. Personally, I love them both, but I guess it serves the example of not requiring super visuals.

But Uncharted 2 and MGS4 are the to games this generation that I would hold up as all time classics.

I wouldn't say that Uncharted 2 puts any great games to shame, but I would say that it is still better.

kevnb5017d ago

by the mario galaxy games, starcraft 2 and mgs4. There are plenty of others a I think are better, but those games just are head and shoulders above.

Lyr1c5016d ago

You can't be serious.

The Mario galaxy games do NOT put Uncharted 2 to shame. The 2nd one, I could see people preferring it over Uncharted 2 but still not to the point of shame....But the first Mario galaxy? Are you delusional?

The same goes for SC2 and MGS4. Some may prefer them over Uncharted, but NONE of those games put Uncharted to shame. Not even close.

Luzce5016d ago

I guess it's a good thing we have variety. Everyone just pick whatever makes you happy.

bjornbear5017d ago

but my game of the generation is a tie between GOWIII and Oblivion simply because its what resonates with my taste the best. I would include FO3 but oblivion felt a lot bigger and deeper (played it after too)

Uncharted 2 as well as MGS4 are probably the best games this gen narratively and in terms of perfection in game design (I LOVE them both) but I simply pick GOWIII and Oblivion because not only are they also technical marvels and nigh perfections of the genre (especially GOWIII, absolute perfection) but I also preferred their style

its all subjective when it comes to "best", and never just one.

x5exotic5016d ago

lol yea try to compare U2 to GoW3
Graphics GOW3>U2
scale GOW3
combat for U2 is gay just shoot guns and not like close combat was awesome
while gow3 had more variety
story of U2 is typical, guys searches for trasure finds bad people they think they killed him,he survives, finds them again, they find secret city, kill bad guys, destroy secret city, happy ending :)
nate is just another ripoff of dante (DMC)
the only reason it won many awards cuz there was nothing else out there..and remember GOW3's demo wa a runner up for goty 2009 against a full Uncharted game

RDR and ME2 rape U2 as well

I'm not going to really debate which game/series is better, but all I have to say, Uncharted 2 is one of the most polished games I've ever played, and succeeded in all aspects of its design. I can't say anything for or against Mass Effect, as I'm waiting for my friend to lend me the game to try on PC.

wolfy24495017d ago (Edited 5017d ago )

Played mass effect 1 and 2 and i have to say its the best offline rpg i have seen, the story is awesome, they choices really give the game a lot of repeatability and there are some moments that are simple epic, like the one before shepard goes to kill the giant human robot

Seijoru5017d ago

Ever hear of The Witcher?

Christopher5017d ago (Edited 5017d ago )

Even BioWare's older fares, I'd say, were actually better than ME2 and 1. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, specifically, I find to be a better RPG than both of the Mass Effect games. I'd also place Baldur's Gate above ME1 and 2 if we're comparing RPGs.

Personally, my favorite RPG of all time is the one RPG that BioWare used as an example of their ideas: Planescape: Torment.

And, yes, The Witcher is definitely a great RPG as well. Can't wait for the next one, which is coming to the 360 and PS3 :)

kevnb5017d ago

but I suggest getting the pc version of the witcher 2 if you have the option. 100% focus is on the pc version, with likely pc to console ports.

Count5016d ago

KOTOR does not compare to Mass Effect. Baldur's Gate does.

Zinc5016d ago

Planescape: Torment is a classic example of taking everything they could out of Pen and Paper RPG and translating it to the PC. It really was something special. RPG's as a general genre are my games of choice. RTS and TBS are also up there for me.

The real killer5017d ago (Edited 5017d ago )

I have Mass affect 2, man what boring game is that.
After installing the game on my PC, and after 6 a 10 ours i delete this game from my HDD and sell this game to a happy other gamer.

So, my opinion is way less a gothy.
And the funny apart is, they call it a RPG, fock of............this is no RPG.

Seijoru

Also: Gothic/Risen/Dungeonlords/With cer/Fallout 3 and two world.

All those disagree clickers, poor kid they don't know what a RPG game is....shame.

You have current 4 bubbles, i could take all your bubbles if i want by constantly clicking on your history comment on trolling and than you are down at 1 bubble.

Becouse it happend to me and still happend, but i'm not doing this becouse it's childish.

Rucury5017d ago (Edited 5017d ago )

Edit:

I know how you could do that. Thank you for not doing it. I retract what I posted, I guess I was just a little pissed at how poorly the "Admins" or "mods" actually moderate this site. I shouldn't have taken it out on you.

I apologize. Have a bubble =)

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave21d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan21d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
