Ironstar: Last year, Nathan Drake obnoxiously won "Game-of-the-Year" by a no contest. Despite his arguable egotistical attitude, Drake has everything to be proud of. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was hands down the best title of last year, and possibly years to come.

The thing is, Uncharted 2 is the best game of this generation.
We've seen God of War 3, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Heavy Rain, Super Mario Galaxy 2... and guess what? Uncharted 2 puts all of them to shame. I think the only game that can dethrone Uncharted 2 is Uncharted 3.

Naw, MGS4 was great, but Uncharted 2 was so much better in my opinion.

I won't say it puts all those games to shame, the way HorsePowerr says, but it is definitely the most well rounded and polished of any of those games.

What I mean is, not only is it an incredible game experience, but the sheer amount of features and quality is unmatched. No other game combines the quality of graphics, story, characters, gameplay, multiplayer modes and co-op modes at such a high level.

Uncharted 2 definitely is a candidate for best game of this generation. But there are also quite a few out there that could dethrone it. Like MGS4, Portal, Braid.

Most people seem to love the games that concentrate on sheer scale or epic cinema style action. I personally think, it's the most creative and original games that deserve to stand on top.

Uncharted 2 does not put Super Mario Galaxy 2 to shame. SMG2 stands on its own without the need of powerful technology or even a decent HDTV.

All the games you mentioned are amazing, and deserve to be in the same league as Uncharted 2. I think maybe your problem is that you like a certain console a bit more than it's competitors...

I consider mario and uncharted in two very different genres. its like comparing a disney/pixar movie which are very good to watch and well crafted to an action adventure with amazing effects we've never seen before.

they are both good movie/genres, but this whole discussion revolves around goty which has only been handed to not only great games with awesome gameplay. But games which are pushing the technical level or are at least around it. Which by your own admission Mario is not.

although i am sure some sites will undoubtedly give Mario the nod.

Careful, games4fun. Your name implies that you would know something about a game being bigger than the sum of its parts - what makes a game fun isn't necessarily the best graphics, sound, mechanics, whatever.

SMG2 is a very different way of making a marquee game this generation - take all the back-end stuff from the last game, and focus almost solely on ingenuity in level design. It's a subversive idea that goes against the "Bigger, faster, stronger" idea of pushing better graphics with each sequel.

It's a good sign - despite the fact that Xbox 360's and PS3's aren't getting any more powerful, we may be looking forward to games with more money invested in creativity over brute force - stuff that's more about fun than frame rate, not because the graphics aren't good, but because that part of the equation is already in place.

Not that stunning graphics aren't great - I loved Uncharted 2 because I hadn't felt so close to the Himalayas in my life - good graphics can help suspend disbelief, but it's okay to not have those.

Uncharted 2 as well as MGS4 are probably the best games this gen narratively and in terms of perfection in game design (I LOVE them both) but I simply pick GOWIII and Oblivion because not only are they also technical marvels and nigh perfections of the genre (especially GOWIII, absolute perfection) but I also preferred their style

I'm not going to really debate which game/series is better, but all I have to say, Uncharted 2 is one of the most polished games I've ever played, and succeeded in all aspects of its design. I can't say anything for or against Mass Effect, as I'm waiting for my friend to lend me the game to try on PC.

Played mass effect 1 and 2 and i have to say its the best offline rpg i have seen, the story is awesome, they choices really give the game a lot of repeatability and there are some moments that are simple epic, like the one before shepard goes to kill the giant human robot

Even BioWare's older fares, I'd say, were actually better than ME2 and 1. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, specifically, I find to be a better RPG than both of the Mass Effect games. I'd also place Baldur's Gate above ME1 and 2 if we're comparing RPGs.

Personally, my favorite RPG of all time is the one RPG that BioWare used as an example of their ideas: Planescape: Torment.

And, yes, The Witcher is definitely a great RPG as well. Can't wait for the next one, which is coming to the 360 and PS3 :)

Planescape: Torment is a classic example of taking everything they could out of Pen and Paper RPG and translating it to the PC. It really was something special. RPG's as a general genre are my games of choice. RTS and TBS are also up there for me.

I know they are different, but in terms of multiplayer (except for the griefing), long-lasting playability after the story has ended, and a shocking ending that I think was one of the best, Red Dead was better. The suicide mission was ok, but since I spent most of the game scanning planets to upgrade my ship, I pretty much knew what was coming.

Mass Effect 2 lost itself between a Third Person Shooter and an RPG. The game simply could not make up it`s mind. It`s RPG elements were weak, watered down and shallow and the gunplay was pretty average. The exploration left quite a lot to be desired as well. It had incredible conversation and story options, but that was the only stand-out in my opinion.

Uncharted 2 on the other hand is all about how the game plays, no conversations, no in-depth exploring, and yet, it`s the most flawless gameplay I have ever had the honor of experiencing. Uncharted 2 simply puts every other game to shame in terms of gameplay.

Is Mass Effect 2 a GOTY contender? Sure, it`s a good game, very overrated, but good. It`s competition is Red Dead Redemption, Starcraft 2, Heavy Rain, God of War 3, Little Big Planet 2, Halo: Reach, Gran Turismo 5, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and more, therefore, it does not get my vote.

I have played it. It's overrated. Clunky combat, and corridors everywhere complete with the stereotypical explosive container perfectly placed. The story wasn't as good as the first either. The choices from the first game changed nothing. The reapers just sorta came and went. Sheperd can't change between being a massive douch or a naive nice guy that plays father figure to all of his female recruits. It was kinda creepy actually.

Mass Effect 2 is my favourite game so far this year. I actually probably enjoyed it more than Uncharted 2.

To win game of the year, this year is going to be the toughest yet with games like SMG2, Starcraft 2, Halo Reach, RDR, LBP2 and GT5 all for ME2 to contend with. What an unbelievable gaming year this is turning out to be.

Mass Effect 2 had some improvements over the first (whether or not you hit your target is now based on whether your reticle was lined up, not based on some chance-based accuracy statistic), but it also had some thing that I thought were worse than the original. The elevator rides at least kept me in character and in the universe of the game, and Mass Effect 2 just replaced them with full-on loading screens... And while the Mako didn't control perfectly, it was fun to have tons of planets to go explore around. They took out that whole aspect and replaced it with that god-awful boring planet scanning mini-game instead. Definitely a mistake. In my opinion, the game as an overall entity is not really any better or worse than the first. It improved some qualities and lowered some others. It's a good game, but definitely not game of the year for me.

My game of the year is definitely Dragon Quest IX. It's just so addictive. I love the customization. I like all the sub-plots that make up the grander story. I love the graphics and music, so charming. The grinding and equipment hunting aspects are very addictive. The vocation stuff keeps me coming back for more. And the local multiplayer is a total blast. Can't get enough of it. I've had it for 1 week and already put in 90 hours.

Runner-up is probably Joe Danger. I haven't gotten so addicted to replaying levels to top my high score and competing with friends for the highest scores since Cray Taxi over a decade ago. And Joe Danger is a much better game than Cray Taxi ever was. It's incredibly polished and feature-rich with the level-creation tools giving it an infinite replayability. I simply love the game.

Haven't tried Starcraft 2 yet. I have high hopes for it, though.

Otherwise, a list in no particular order of my other favorites this year goes like this:

I just thought I'd add in White Knight Chronicles to my list of favorites this year. I sort of forgot about it because I didn't play the U.S. version for more than about 25 hours. I originally had the Japanese version and played it for well more than 100 hours. Love the hell out of that game. Level-5 had two excellent games this year in my opinion with WKC and DQIX. I thought the U.S. version was even better than the Japanese version of WKC and I intend to play it just as much as I did the Japanese one if not more, but I haven't got around to it yet because so many games came out that I hadn't already played that I focused my attention on so far instead.

Halo 3 ODST was an overpriced flop, Batman was a surprise sleeper hit and many of the good games we coulda played last year were delayed into early 2010 to avoid Modern Glitchfest 2. Demon's Souls took GOTY over UC2 on some sites. I actually purchased DS before I considered purchasing UC2.

Mass Effect 2 is definitely one of the better games that came out this year and it's really hard to believe that the game even came out this year. I bought it the CE for the PC (Why would you buy it on the 360 if you have a rig that can run it?) and I must say I gleefully enjoyed more then 30+ hours playing it. I must however admit the only reason why it wouldn't get game of the year is few of its quirks that really get in the way. Commander Shepard is yours to be and s/he is supposed to be you...so s/he really ended up being a little stiff. Not only in the animation during the in game cut scenes but the generic way s/he talked that felt really stiff and emotionless.

Either ways this game is deserving if it does get GOTY but then again some websites *cough* GT *cough* will probably end up giving the GOTY honors to COD Black Ops.

While Mass Effect 2 had an unbalanced feel from RPG and shooter, it was a damn good game. ME2 and RDR are probably the best games I played this year. I played Uncharted 2, But I feel that I liked Mass Effect 2 better than Uncharted 2... It's my opinion so please, don't start flipping tables. lol

There are a lot of GOTY contenders at the moment... I mean, A LOT. And then we have upcoming games like Mafia 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, Halo: Reach, Gran Turismo 5, Fable 3, etc.... GOTY is going to be tough to decide. But I feel that ME2 should win GOTY. It had an amazing epic storyline, great cast of characters, top-notch soundtrack, thrilling gameplay, etc... But good luck to all and hopefully everybody is satisfied by the amount of awesome games we had this year.

by far the best game I have played in years. It gets my game of tha year vote for sure!!

I think it will win countless awards, out of 25 reviews it has a 97 metacritic and the only scores it got below a 95 were from no name german and sweden mags.

I think the bottom line is while last year had some very good games, it wasn't as big a competition as this year.

Anytime Blizzard releases a new title, it sends shockwaves through the industry as evidenced by it's great sales and # of people on battle.net playing it.

You've got Halo: Reach which is Halo and is always a strong contender in number of sales and player base as well. You've got GOW3 (while not my GOTY because not as much re playability; it's still a fantastic game.)

RDR, SMG2, LBP2, Alan Wake, GT5, ME2, Dragon Age (fantastic game as well....not GOTY probably but still very very good) all mean there just isn't the one game that's gonna stand out

Obviously the big 4 are SC2, Halo: Reach, GT5 and SMG2 I think are gonna be the main ones to win most of them. RDR might get one or two but those 4 games are HEAVY HITTERS in the gaming marketplace and are always taken notice of

When you argue these things you have to think about it. In both cases UC2 was better than UC1 and ME2 was better than ME1. But was ME2 better than other games? People are claiming SMG2 is the greatest game ever, but is it just merely better than SMG1? You must think about it in comparison to other games. The reason I think UC2 got so many awards is that it did everything well. It wasn't just a slightly better version of UC1 like a UC 2.0, but an excellent game overall. So before you run and hand ME2 the GOTY award think if it is really a better game then the rest or just a better ME game.

I don't know it has to compete with starcraft 2, little big planet 2, red dead redemption, mario galaxy 2, god of war 3, and possibly grand turismo 5. One of those are possibly goty and runner ups. But personally I haven't played none of them but mass effect 2 because I don't have money and time to play. But if I get god of war 3 that is probably be my personal goty cause Kratos is badass. Hope it doesn't disappoint me though. I think I forgot to mention halo and cod though lol. Cod should never win goty.

I still dont know how u2 wont goty parts look ok but inconsistent and i just got past the train level kept thinking n64 golden eye train level was better and gears train level , qauntum of solace train level ive had alot of fun with u2 but poor aa and decisions in game me2 just feels more epic to me u feel a bit more involved , but its just my opinion still have not finished u2 it went back to the start of the train wreck level i thought what more trains eject.

I seriously don't get this whole Mass Effect 2 isn't an rpg thing. You are Shepard(There's the role bit) and you are trying to save the galaxy from certain destruction(There's the playing bit) and it so happens to be a sic fi GAME. In all seriousness, in it's defense it still and rpg just maybe not in the traditional sense. It's evolved or unevolved depending on how you want to look at it really

Uncharted 2 is game of the gen.. i love MGS4, but the cutscenes were a bit long, but very interesting. The boss fights were well thought out. I think this is the last shooter i played were boss battles were made perfect.

Uncharted 2 just brings a cinematic experience and you control the fate of Drake.. who is both charasmatic yet intolerable at times.

I don't get why people keep saying ME2 isn't RPG:

1. You make decision that alternate the outcome of the story (not just in ME2, but how you play ME1 also affect ME2 game and ME3) that is the most interesting aspect of ME game. I can seriously say that ME is the first true trilogy RPG game because of this alone. And for once, ME2 story are so much more involve than UC2 (remember it could effect the next ME that you gonna play.)

2. You have automatic upgrade (instead of micromanaging in ME1 where you just practically doing the same thing except ME1 is a clutter mess of stuffs, therefore, i welcome ME2 upgrade system.)

3. Although the mining is quite time consuming, the materials are actually useful this time around (good for upgrade weapon, armor, ships, etc...). It only used for experience in ME1 and it takes even longer to do so in ME1 where you just driving around aimlessly on an empty planet for hrs just to get what 3 mining sites?

4. Instead of using sword, you use a gun instead (a sword is not a requirement for an RPG). You can still control your AI (just like FF for example) and combine effect in battle. The battle system is much more interesting than ME1 that for sure.

5. There are a lot more action this time, but a large chunk of the game are still running around talking, getting quests, and solving problems. The major RPG part of the game is getting to know your squad mate and managing them as a leader (since there are so much conflict between them this time around) because they could affect the outcome of the mission (especially the final part of the game). What game out there has that much character development as ME?

ME2 is one of the most solid game all around including TPS aspect of it (which is actually a small part of the game). It is great candidate as GOTY.

I find it very odd with all the hate on ME2. ME2 was a pretty damn good game. The best I've played in a long time...I am sick and tired of short games with limited stories and just straight shooting through the game mindlessly...

ME2 had all the elements you would want in the game. A lot of missions, contact, character development, story line, difficulty, action, and you can enjoy 30-40 hours with this game...

I just find it odd how the comments converted into "ME2" is not an RPG and is a Third person shooter and because those people that consider ME2 not an rpg is making that the reason for ME2 being overrated.....Its a game and a good game is a good game....

Simply because its an awesome game. Just awesome. Mass Effect 2 in full HD on a PC is enchanting to look at, and is also a great game. I want SC2 to win, but the list of contenders are
1) StarCraft 2
2) Little Big Planet 2
3) Mass Effect 2
4) Red Dead Redemption
5) Heavy Rain
Honorable mentions are God of War 3 and Gran Turismo 5.
Reason GOW 3 isn't on the list cuz even though its a mind blowing game, it feels something is missing, which was not present in GOW2. ( Please, before blowing your cooker whistles off, please know that I bought a PS3 just for GOW3, I found out MGS 4 later).

Please don't compare Uncharted 2 to Mass Effect 2.
And Uncharted 2 is NOT the game of the generation. It's Metal Gear Solid 4. That game made me hunt, beg, borrow and steal so that I could play every game in the series...:)

I can't believe people are saying Mass Effect 2 is over rated. Must be a clear case of fanboy talk. Mass Effect 2 is an absolute awesome game that deserves its high reviews. Such an awesome story and great voice acting.

You guys do realize that one of the main characters in Mass Effect 2 is played by Academy Award winner Martin Sheen? Uncharted 2 can't say that. Uncharted 2 is a sweet game but character development and voice acting, Mass Effect 2 easily takes the cake.

As of now, Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead are at the top for GOTY.

I played GOD3. And yes, it was a great game but it was just a basic hack and slash game. Mass Effect 2 is beyond just a game. It's more like an epic movie. Like I said in my previous post, it has freaking academy award winning actors doing the voices. That says what kind of game it is.

They should stick to only naming GOTY for different genres. Uncharted 2 isn't really comparable to Mass Effect 2 since they play so differently. Each one is good at what it does. It's actually a decent article. The writer has nothing but praise for uncharted 1 & 2. He just a word in the wrong context. As for Mass Effect, I haven't played either game but I think ME2 will get GOTY from most media outlets. At least it seems that way from most podcasts I listen to.

GOW3 doesn't need to be GOTY for any media outlets because it's really not that great of a game. Graphics aside, it's nothing we haven't played before in any of the 3 other GOW games.

Mass Effect 1 took more risks than Mass Effect 2. All they did with Mass Effect 2 is polish what they did good and got rid of what they did wrong with the first game. Game of the year doesn't go to a great game; it goes to a game that takes it to the next level. So far no games have done that this year. Uncharted 2 should win GOTY for 2010 too.

Some people are acting like Uncharted 2 is the greatest game of all time or something. Yeah it's a great game and certain deserves its acclaim, but it was kind of another flash in the pan in terms of this generation of games.

There's a greater improvement between Mass Effect 1 and 2 than there was between Uncharted 1 and 2.

I can't comment on ME 1 or 2 but I do agree to an extent about Uncharted2.

It's an awesome game, but people do tend to go a bit extreme with it. The game is polished like no other but to me it was just more of the same. I'm getting tired of 3rd person cover shooters and that's all that uncharted 2 offered. The platforming wasn't nearly as good as Drake's Fortune and the puzzles were almost non existent in Among Thieves. It's a great game but it's also a game that I haven't gone back to after I finished it. Drake's Fortune I've played through about 4 times now. I think GOTY 2009 should have went to R&C: A Crack in Time. That game is freaking awesome.

I have finished ME2 3 or 4 times on the PC and I can say the game is amazing addicting.
But it is not my GoTY.Actually I am not sure wich will be the "best"game for me in 2010 bc there are so many cool games I have played so far on my PC, PS3, Wii and portables.

One thing is for sure about ME2, it can be the RPG of the year .
I really loved FF13 dispite a lot ppl did not like it but I still like ME2 a bit more.

I Will wait and see if the Fallout New Vegas can defeat ME2 for me and will have to play CoD BO,Mafia 2 and GT5 to decide my overall GoTY

Hell,it's the game of this generation,so far! For me,nothing comes close. WOHD was always my Fav,until ME2 appeared. Sure, I enjoyed playing UC2, it looks nice,plays nice, but in the end it's only just short of being an interactive movie.In my opinion,there's only a handful of top class games this gen,and ME2 leads these elite few titles, by quite a margin.

i have both games and love them both but imo i prefer mass effect 2, due to the huge scale of the game, every single choice from the first game changes the second every single choice in the second game changes the third. you can have individual characters dead, all characters dead, no characters dead and bioware have created it so each of these carry over to the sequels. its amazing.
