siyrobbo5385d ago

lost odyssey is the best final fantasy game this gen

Smkt5385d ago

wtf is this.. enchant arms? last remnant.. that broken pos?? wtf? where is tales of vesperia?

this should be the list.

5.eternal sonata
4.star ocean 4
3.resonance of fate/blue dragon
2.tales of vesperia
1.lost odyssey

CrzyFooL5385d ago

Lost Odyssey was the real Final Fantasy 13

kewlkat0075384d ago

FFXIII was missing so much that was doable in Lost Odyssey......Like Exploring towns, Individual Battle Mechanics.....etc I can go on. Stuff that I last did in Final Fantasy X. To me, it felt like a traditional JRPG.

I'm on Mission 59 on Final Fantasy XIII but about to go ahead and beat it...I need to get back on my 360.

I was hoping a Lost Odyssey 2. Now really, I'm not sure what other JRPG to look forward to..FF is over.

Man I miss the SNES/PSX days.

CrazyForGames5385d ago

enchanted arms shouldn't be on any list that doesn't have worst or terrible in the name

Dance5385d ago

you honestly think lost odyssey was bad

In its first years the 360 was the consol of choice for RPGs, Japanese or western, and you have to give Microsoft credit, they brought next gen JRPGs in the time japans developers turned to the handhelds for low cost production, Lost Odyssey is one of the best JRPG this generation and better than FF13, and if more polish was applied games like Blue Dragon, Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery could have become great as well.

They also commissioned Tales of Vesperia that was released in the same month in Japan and NA (a miracle).

But unfortunately Microsoft lost focus on game development in recent years, and just relied on timed exclusivity and third party games.

SOAD5385d ago

Had Microsoft released a reliable console at launch in addition to its great effort to push JRPGs for 360, then its sales in Japan would be greater, and Microsoft would have more reason to push for JRPGs.

Yet, they decided to build a three-legged table. They did several things wrong with one major flaw, the hardware was flawed. Now, seeing that the PS3's install base in Japan is much higher and the reputation much better, what reason does Microsoft have to push for more JRPGs? Undoubtedly, more Japanese developers will now shift their focus for JRPGs back to the PS3.

And Microsoft will fall back on its core gaming experience, the Western shooter genre.

I like to compare this situation to a game of Monopoly. Microsoft managed to purchase Park Place and Boardwalk and took a strong lead against the PS3. But Sony persevered, and over time MS made mistakes, and Sony purchased the red, yellow and green properties. Now, Microsoft is hoping Sony will land on boardwalk (with hotel) and pay up the ass. But Sony has more bases covered. MS is constantly landing on Sony's properties.

If Microsoft had a little more foresight, they would have made sure the hardware itself was reliable before setting out to do damage.

Blaze9295385d ago

I Didn't even know there were that many JRPGS on the 360 to begin with honestly :-/

GusBricker5385d ago

...is the best RPG this generation.

Why?

Jansen.

Smkt5385d ago

lol but there is a Jansen type character in most jrpgs.. ToV had Raven..

Rocket Sauce5385d ago (Edited 5385d ago )

I feel like he really stole the main character spot when he showed up to work drunk off his ass with three hookers around his arms.

Every game needs a Jansen.

games4fun5385d ago

most of the time i'm waiting to hear jansen's lines more than any of the other character's.

CrzyFooL5385d ago

Correction,

Because of the queens tittehs!!! Come to think of it, LO was filled with awesome boobage. BOOBIES!! HOORAY!

Megaton5385d ago

All in all, I'd say this has been the worst generation ever for JRPGs. The best of the genre in the past few years have mostly been on PS2, coming from Atlus. On the bright side, this shift of failure has turned me on to WRPGs.

SaiyanFury5385d ago

I guess it's different for many people. I wholeheartedly agree this generation has been the worst for JRPGs. I do enjoy western RPGs but not nearly as much as Japanese ones, so instead of embracing more western games, I've gone back to playing my PS2 and original PS for games. So much more fulfilling I personally find. At least until more quality JRPGs come out and Namco finally gets off it's ass and finally releases Tales of Vesperia on PS3 in the west.

Megaton5385d ago

Yeah if I feel like playing a JRPG I go pluck something off my shelf for PS1 or PS2. Either that or I load up my SNES emulator. My favorite RPGs of this generation have all been WRPGs, like Mass Effect.

Chris3995385d ago

I think that this gen has really started to deliver. I always wanted to play these cinematic/ living anime masterpieces and we've had quite a few of those this gen (with more to come - Another World, WKC2, FF VS XIII).

More on topic, the 360 really satisfied my JRPG lust in 2008 with LO, BD, Eternal Sonata and a couple others. More recently, the PS3 has been on FIRE with the JRPG announcements/ releases. And if you want "classic" JRPGs, pick up any of NIS' titles or grab a handheld. There's no need to dive back into "retro" JRPGs when there are probably more JRPGs on the market now than ever before. Next year will be absolute insanity for JRPG releases (on the PS3) and who knows what will manifest on the other platforms too.

All in all, I'm a very happy JRPGer.

Enate5385d ago (Edited 5385d ago )

Your line more on the market then ever isn't saying much and on top of that isn't true. I have yet to play any JRPG this gen that I can say in confidence I will be play two generations later like I do many from PS1. Nothing I've played this gen can even touch the likes of Xenogears, Suikoden II, Crono Trigger, Legend of Legaia and many more. I hold nothing but the highest standards for my favorite genre. An this gen is by far the weakest since I started gaming over 20 years ago.

If there was anything note worthy from what I've played it would be Crisis Core and The World Ends with You. Most of the JRPGS I have played this gen have all been rather boring and extremely predictable. All of my favorite rpgs this gen have all been like someone said above WRPGS, Mass Effect and Fallout 3. An this is coming from someone who still plays Xenogears, Suikoden II, Vanguard bandits and more at least 2 or more times a year.

Kos-Mos5385d ago

Xenoblade and The Last Story on Wii soon to come.

Chris3995385d ago (Edited 5385d ago )

The issue with being an older, seasoned gamer (which I assume that you are) is that we suffer from the "seen it, done it" syndrome. We're jaded and over-saturated with the genre. I've replayed Chrono Trigger/ Cross, Xenogears and all the SNES/ PSX Final Fantasies over the past few years, and honestly, they're classics, but they're not that great (with the exception of FF VI, which is still pretty brilliant). The stories are juvenile, some of the dialog is hokey and the graphics - while charming and stellar for their age - just don't cut it anymore. Not to mention that most JRPGs are geared towards young 13-17 year old males, and the "classic" JRPGs definitely reflect this.

What you, I and many of us have is a strong affliction of nostalgia. Just because those games were what we formed our memories and associations of the genre (JRPGs) with, that doesn't mean that they are as revolutionary as we remember. They are revolutionary, because they are the FIRST games of that sort that we were exposed to - for that reason they will always be special.

I found that once I let go of my expectations, I was really able to enjoy JRPGs this gen, and yes there ARE plenty. Between home consoles and the portables' rather extensive JRPG library, if you can't find a JRPG to play then you really just need to take a break from gaming.

Enate5384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

I'm not suffering from seen it all believe me. There are plenty of games in other genres bringing new things to the forefront everyday. An there is no reason JRPGS shouldn't be doing the same. There is plenty that hasn't been done this gen in wake of jrpgs. Most of them are cell shaded high color non graphically inclined. An the one's that are graphically inclined at least a bit tend to suffer from garbage story lines an bland uninteresting combat among other things.

Like I said above I am finding plenty to love in every other genre. Even with that this gen has still been a complete let down currently for JRPGS for me. An as for pick up a handheld if you didn't notice I said I played Crisis Core and The world ends with you since you seem to have miss that line. Also (assume) I am a seasoned gamer I'm 24 and have been gaming since I could hold a controller.

An honestly I'm sick of the excuses being made for jrpgs. They can be better in every way and actually bring about a good story that isn't the same old bs it has been this gen started. Nostalgia is the furthest thing from what I'm feeling considering. These games still currently have the best story lines to date against today's top rated jrpgs.

Perfect example I picked out every single character in FFXIII before I even played it. They were all the typical character types you would expect and the story was lame as all get out. Last Remnant I couldn't be bothered to play past an hour in that boring game. Blue Dragon isn't to my art style liking at all and again with the kiddy stuff. Actually none of these high color jrpgs are to be honest with the except of maybe tales. Its not just there art style they usually have the kiddy type typical story to accompany the cartoon graphics. Along with the cartoon over the top kiddy personalities.

As for the handheld thing as a hole I find a few in there ok at best. There are not as many that entertained me per say as people would have you believe. I've gone on long enough and I could write a 15 page article on this I'd imagine. About all the things that need to change as of late in jrpg storylines character development and plenty more but I am hungry.

Ask yourself this why is the genre that is the most expansive in what it is allowed to do. Next to maybe other types of rpgs only. Seem to have the most limited scope currently in what it is doing. Look at the difference in Xenogears, Suikoden II, FFVIII and Legend of Legaia. They are all great games with exciting combat, great stories and yet they are nothing alike. Keeping in mind with that question that they are great games not just that they are all different.

Enate5384d ago

Also I will say the one game I haven't played is the one everyone seems to hold this gen in the highest regard and that is LO. As I am not about to buy a 360 for one game I will borrow one at a later date and proceed to play it.

games4fun5385d ago (Edited 5385d ago )

i started playing ff1 dawn of souls on gba and realized how awesome the first game really was.

then i went out and bought lost odyssey. aside from the over the top emotional scenes when you meet the kids (my opinion, should have been a little toned down.) its pretty much more ff than ff 13.

Chris3995384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

So I'm not going to argue about opinions. Personally, I've had some stellar JRPG experiences this gen that in my 26 years of gaming I've never experienced before.

Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, Demon's Souls, Crisis Core, WKC (Best/ first online/ JRPG ever), Folklore, Valkyria Chronicles, Resonance of Fate, Jean D'Arc, DQ IX and more. I really could go on and on, as there's such a plethora of titles to chose from. Many of the games that I listed are not simply carbon copies of previous gen titles, but really unique experiences.

So I respect the fact that the magic of JRPGs has disappeared for you this gen, but for others, myself included, it's still there and getting stronger.

Peace.

P.S. I hated FF XIII when I first played it, simply because it was so un-Final Fantasy like. That said, when I picked it up again after about 3 months of not playing and actually surrendered to the experience, it was pretty good. The ending was suitably epic and cinematic, the post-game content was fun. I just think that if you go into something - videogames, relationships, anything really - with a pre-conceived notion of how it will be, you're just setting yourself up for disappointment as reality is always < than expectations.

And fyi, Xenosaga, FF VII and Legend of Legia all feature turn based combat, spunky male leads and a "save the world" arching story. They're all fundamentally the same, just with different characters and scenarios. You want different, let's talk Persona or some of the games that I mentioned (from this gen) above.

Enate5384d ago (Edited 5384d ago )

Well like you said its opinion and that's just how I feel and you feel how you feel end of story on that. An btw that's Xenogears not Xenosaga but I'm pretty sure that was just a typo but don't want anyone getting confused. An comparing only the likeness I could do that to any game of the same genre. As far as Persona goes that was a series that was late to the party I had already left. I just don't want more of the same especially more of the same I've seen this gen. I want JRPGS to step it up and when and if they do I'll be inclined to agree. Otherwise my opinion will remain as is until someone steps it up. Personally if FFXIII VS doesn't do it I feel I will be left to play JRPGS on my psp for the rest of my life. An save my PS3 and PC for my other fixations of gaming fun.

If the day comes when I finally consider a jrpg to finally be above its predecessors then and only then will admit it. Otherwise JRPGS will be just that for me a thing of the past but a break from gaming I don't need. I will just enjoy the other genres as I currently do.

@spunnups I agree completely

‘GTA V Gets Pulled from PS Plus as PC Players Continue to Favor Legacy Over Enhanced’

That’s an awful clickbait title. The use of the word ‘as’ means the first statement is the result of the second, when in reality they’re not connected.

Profchaos3d ago

Also the same for red dead redemption 2 and GTA trilogy (albeit they split that into individual games)

Tacoboto3d ago

It just got put back on Game Pass recently too.

GTA V is the pass-around sub title, and it probably doesn't even matter because everyone owns a copy or even two by now.

Destiny already has the pretty hyper 'raid' fixation and then they added legendary raid dungeons. Hyperfixating in PvEvP wouldn't work as well because you need a lot more than 2% of the userbase to keep that going unlike raids that are propped up by streamers who make running them their whole job. Most players don't play all the raids let alone run them over and over. And most who play PvP don't want structured PvE elements.
