PS3 launch hype 'wasn't enjoyable' - Heavenly Sword dev

The creator of PS3 exclusive Heavenly Sword, Ninja Theory, has revealed that the pressure on the game to succeed - stemming from the console's fevered launch - was not "enjoyable" for the firm.

Unfortunately Sony owns the IP so they can't produce it for XBox and Sony doesn't appear to be willing to pay to have it patched with trophies and optimized. Damn shame.

Persistantthug5171d ago

I'll have to get it and see soon.

MuleKick5171d ago

Why are they still crying about that game? I enjoyed the game a lot but that was 4 years ago. Stop bitching and just promote Enslaved. Damn Assholes.

FFXI1015171d ago (Edited 5171d ago )

"the Game is only couple hours long....
No freaking wonder no one really bought it... i mean it was only couple hours long.

other than that, i HEARD good things about the game."

Listen to yourself, you never even play the game before and yet you are here saying the game is freaking short and no wonder no one really bought it. Really? How long is the campaign for Halo 3 and Halo O.D.S.T? did it stop people from buying it and play it? You are a troll and a stupid one.

HammockGames5170d ago (Edited 5170d ago )

You won't regret it. Great game, outstanding production values, criminally underrated overall.

Some complain about its length. Personally, I found replay value in the challenges for each level (glyphs of some sort - it's been a while), so I didn't think this was really a problem. Besides, what's in the game is excellent.

heavenly sword is such an underrated game, its a masterpiece.

IdleLeeSiuLung5171d ago

It was at best a mediocre game. The game play mechanics were... well below mediocre. Production value was good though, which jives well with the studio claiming storyline is more important than game play.

I prefer game play....

MorganX5171d ago

The gameplay mechanics were great to me. Better and more enjoyable than God of War III IMO. Much more than, pull the sparkling lever to get through the door then resume button mashing. Pfft ...

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5171d ago (Edited 5171d ago )

The Game have one of the bext Facial Animations this Generation.

Anyway, if they develop HS 2, I can say for sure, it will sell a lot better compared to 2006.

And they will be pleased.

Amplitude5171d ago

I somewhat agree with ALDAxD_CENTAURO. God of War 3 was amazing, but i had much more 'fun' with Heavently Sword. I beat Heavenly Sword a ridiculous number of times for no reason other than fun... There were no trophies either. Hell i actually just played it about a week ago.
It's a great, and incredibly under-rated game. So is the first Uncharted. ..and Warhawk.

PS3s launch was actually really, really good in terms of good exclusive games in my opinion.

Sonic075171d ago (Edited 5171d ago )

i pretty much agree with you comments on heavenly sword. imo, i have had more fun playing hs than i have had playing every single gow game that has been released that is until gow3, seeing as i haven't played it yet.

but as for your statements on the ps3 and its exclusives at launch, lets be honest now. when the ps3 was released (on day one) there was only 1 exclusive game that anyone could recommend picking up for the system and that game Resistance. now i don't know about you but 600 dollars for 1 game just isnt worth it.

@IdleLeeSiuLung

why do i get the feeling that if we were to bring gow 3 into this, you would say the exact opposite.

IdleLeeSiuLung5170d ago (Edited 5170d ago )

I actually never played GoW3... I played the first GoW a little and the controls are much more responsive. I don't care much for quick time events though, hated Ninja Blade.

With that said, best game play mechanic so far is Ninja Gaiden 2. Heard good things about Bayonetta, but haven't tried that yet.

Amplitude5170d ago

haha. Fair enough. It certainly did get better though.

I guess i'm a bit biased since, even if there were 1000 games at launch, i dont think i would have been any less addicted to Resistance Fall of Man. >.>

DJMarty5171d ago (Edited 5171d ago )

Why is it unfortunate Sony owns the IP. Sony could make a sequel any time they like, no need for multi format. All they have to do is give to one of ther interternal studio's. If it did go multi format it would be PS3/PSP. It's the only way Sony would go.

prunchess5171d ago

Really liked this game. It's so cheap to buy now that anyone that hasn't played it yet should check it out.

MorganX5171d ago

It's unfortunate because Sony doesn't appear to be interested in a sequel or patching it with trophies and because it's their IP, it'll just die.

nickjkl5171d ago

because making sequesls require a studio most likely sony has studios working key word around the clock making games its not like they can bust into a game studio half way in development and go you gotta make this game

second patching it for trophys idk dont really care for trophys

dorron5171d ago (Edited 5171d ago )

It is a great game. I'd replay it if trophies were applied.

To me, HS succeeded. It's just that there wasn't a previously installed base, so it couldn't make big sales.

deadreckoning6665171d ago (Edited 5171d ago )

"It's just that there wasn't a previously installed base, so it couldn't make big sales."

No...HS didn't sell well because Sony didn't hype it up the way it should have been hyped up. The fact that there wasn't a previously installed base was almost irrelevant in this case. Gears 1 had no previously installed base...yet it sold very well. So did Borderlands.

@ps3freak18- Ur comment fits ur name very well. And wats with the attitude. I OWN Heavenly Sword and I loved playing it back in the day. I wished it woulda sold more.

'Gears 1 sold well because it had a huge amount of hype'
Ummm...yeah. Thats kinda what I said. Heavenly Sword DIDN'T have a huge amount of hype..therefore it didn't sell well. U just proved my point.

mrv3215171d ago

No, the amount of people that can buy a product usually has something to do with the amount that product sells.

Borderlands came out in 2009, the install base was 80 million plus.

Gears 1 sold well because it had a huge amount of hype, most games with hype even if they don't meet it still will sell ( GTA IV, MW2 etc )

labaronx5171d ago

its hard to hype up new IPs as it is, it's even harder when the console for the game is a big $600 dollars.......

PS3Freak5171d ago

What he says is true. Stfu Deadreckoning.

TheHater5171d ago

the Game sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide. I think that is pretty successful for a new IP that was exclusive to the PS3 back in 2007. Today, most games can't even sell a million copies

WLPowell5171d ago (Edited 5171d ago )

Little Big Planet sold over a million, and Media Molecule was all like "Fuck yeah, lets make a sequel"...

Oh well it's a multiplatform developer so it's technically a "360 in-house dev" using this generations logic. So negative hype and under 6 million units sold is a travesty (remember kids cause only PS3 games do that). Cause if you want to be a good 360 game you have to have a multibillion dollar ad campaign, everyone has to fawn over you for no reason whatsoever, you have to blame the PS3 for all your misfortune or say nothing but positives for the 360, and you will easily sell 6+ million.

skrug5171d ago

And all media at time was bashing everything and anything PS3 related...

Alos885171d ago

It wasn't a great launch. I remember back when thisiswaiting.com didn't lead to a link to delicious ice cream.

dragonyght5171d ago

my opinion is that they should have with PS3 and worked on HS2 it have a bigger install base now they would have been rewarded for their effort i mean HS was a pretty nice game but were launch during a bad time

This is a pretty good game. Im glad its backward compatible on xbo/series

Venoxn4g34d ago

Great game, enjoy the DLC as well

bamboo313rd34d ago

So under rated. Just played it with lossless frame generation and 4k. 144hz.

0hMyGandhi34d ago

fantastic game. Criminally underrated. Yes, the combat was overly simple. But the sound design, world design, characters and lore were absolutely top-notch.

You left out The Darkness games bring those back

fan_of_gaming165d ago

The head of Nightdive Studios has posted that The Darkness is on their list of games they want to do, so hopefully something comes from that

Yi-Long166d ago

Little Big Planet 1 and 2 deserve a mention, IMO.

Good call on Motorstorm, a game released 2 gens ago but still looks and feels so good. Motorstorm 2 and Motorstorm RC were gems as well. They followed up the Motorstorm games with the brilliant Driveclub, which still manages to put modern racing games to shame. Imagine closing down a studio as talented as that ... (!) Incredible.

A little 'arcade-gem' back then was The Last Guy, a top down 'follow the leader' snake-like game where you had to find and lead survivors to safety during an alien invasion, on terrible looking 'Google-earth' maps. Graphics were poor, even back then, but would love that same gameplay with modern maps and graphics.

Street Fighter 4, once it finally had a full roster, was quite good, but it was always an ugly game, sadly. Imagine bringing that back while using the current SF6 engine.

Good suggestions, I'd be in for
LittleBigPlanet
LittleBigPlanet 2
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
Motorstorm: RC

purple101165d ago

God damn I love motorstorm so much

At the time I had a low-mid range sony 40” tv, The latency to the controller was waaaay too high, would to play a modern version

In saying that later I got a 3d lg tv and playing the 3d motorstorm in my bedroom with the environment crumbling around the track, was something special, specially compared to what others were playing at the time, will always remember that

Skuletor165d ago

Some good choices here and Resistance: Fall of Man is my most wanted PS3 remaster/remake. Not sure about their claim it was Sony's answer to Gears of War though.

CrimsonWing69165d ago

I’d rather have sequels than remakes. Look at Dead Space 1 Remake. Would’ve been cooler if we got a new entry and it failed with sales sealing the fate of a sequel rather than just replay the same game and it fail in sales and we never get a new entry.

Remakes are great for things like PS2 and earlier games to really get a crazy new graphical coat, but I think we should ease up on all these remakes and actually do sequels.

fan_of_gaming165d ago

Yeah for sure, sequels would be ideal. But in the current market environment where many big publishers are risk-averse, I'd rather get a remaster or remake that a developer can do on a budget that will be approved, rather than nothing for an IP.

Inverno165d ago

I rather they remaster and port over to PC and current gen all the games permanently stuck on PS360. Those games don't need remakes, they need to be given a chance to live again outside of their confined consoles and then give a few proper sequels. Like Sleeping Dogs, Motor Storm, LA Noir, should get another entry.

fan_of_gaming165d ago

Yeah I'd be fine with remasters of PS3 games too, they don't have to be remakes.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro199d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72199d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_199d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga199d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos199d ago (Edited 199d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23199d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000200d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin200d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole200d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix200d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989199d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor200d ago (Edited 200d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱
