Interview: Take-Two Aims For One New IP Per Year, But High Quality Needs 'Ample Time'

At Take-Two, being asked continually by investors, analysts, media and fans alike when the next Grand Theft Auto game is coming out is a regular occurrence -- and corporate communications VP Alan Lewis says he can't blame them.

In fact, he tells Gamasutra, he'd probably ask the same question, were he on the outside looking in. But so successful is the highly-valued franchise that it's driven what he says are "misconceptions" about the company -- chief among them is the idea that the publisher truly only has the potential to profit in a GTA year.

The company in fact has several strong properties --
according to Lewis, Take-Two publishes 17 franchises that have sold over 1 million units, and eight franchises that have sold over 5 million units.

That would never happen, Take-Two would loose so much money going exclusive.

EA maybe, but to Sony or Microsoft is highly doubtful. I would hate to have them sold to EA, just because EA is a bunch of cheap skates and we could expect to be nickle and dimed the rest of our gaming years.

Iamback5481d ago

T2 was about to sell to EA year ago for 2.3 billion USD. Sony buy them, and can 360 projects and versions.

Silly gameAr5481d ago

I think he's just trolling.

NothingToGainButLove5481d ago

Awesome, I always like when new IP's come out. They give the gaming market a little mix from the usuals that we see like halo, uncharted, gears, gta etc...

New IP's that introduce new gameplay and successfully battle through a gaming market that gives an edge to well known games like COD are always welcomed.

Quality over quantity and patience over haste.

SONY can buy Take2. If Take2 go under severe financial stress like a while back, expect SONY to be a hid bidder in taking Take2. However, i would think SONY would probably make some sort of arrangement to keep releasing 360 versions, while keeping the ps3 version significantly better.

This may be a possibility in the future as Take Two's performance hasnt been stellar as before.

Well there’s a saying about 100 monkeys with typewriters in a room, give it a few years and you’ll see the miracles that can be done with 100 Ai in a server 🤣

Cacabunga86d ago

Great interview from a humbly powerful man! I’m sad he didn’t speak about RDR at anytime, it’s like it’s not big enough for them

ZycoFox86d ago (Edited 86d ago )

Bit of a stretch to say "human creativity" will always be needed, key word being always. Sure it makes a big difference right now, if you just let it do whatever with little/no effort you end up with lazily put together slop..

It's still early days, but tools to help develop games quicker is obviously a good thing.

anast86d ago

Give it some time and the same copy will be selling their latest AI game.

I get the feeling he doesn’t think a lot.

Didn't even know Brendan McNamara was still in the business.

DaReapa115d ago

Seeing that he's reassociated himself with R*, it would be nice to see a follow-up to L.A. Noire.

chicken_in_the_corn115d ago

I doubt it will happen. Rockstar Australia will probably be developing Rockstar's next game, with the rest of Rockstar's studios.

Dirty_Lemons114d ago (Edited 114d ago )

Hey Alan Wake II showed it might be many years but sequels are always possible! NY Noire? 🤔

Profchaos115d ago (Edited 115d ago )

He really shouldn't be guy is scum I wonder if he still runs it like a boys club if your not from the UK your on the outside and disposable meanwhile bashing Aussies and breaking our labour laws what he did during the development of LA noire is extremely illegal here and he got lucky he was able to intimidate his staff into not reporting it

goken114d ago (Edited 114d ago )

Sounds bad
I am not familiar with the incident, so i honestly do not know.
But… if whatever he did was not reported, then where did this information come from?

Profchaos114d ago

@goken
This is a great video that explains everything that went wrong with la noire Rockstar and team Bondi during la noires development

isarai115d ago

Probably the most baffling acquisition ive ever seen, they absolutely screwed up something that should've been so simple, and then took so long to fix it that R* themselves fixed it for them and took their studio name off the splash screen......and so they acquired them?

Christopher115d ago

Keep the talent that is familiar with your engine(s), get rid of the bad management.

red2tango115d ago

It's literally in the article:

"It’s not to be confused with Grove Street Games, which came under fire for the poor quality of the original Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition in 2021"

isarai115d ago (Edited 115d ago )

Dayum im dumb, i skimmed the article qnd didn't see that 😅

Koneesha115d ago

Yeah, these are the people that Rockstar brought into to fix the trilogy not Grove Street Games who originally made it and messed it up!

-Foxtrot115d ago

I don’t get it

I’d rather they forget this game happened and tried again a few years later when next gen rolls around with some proper remasters

Maybe actually spend some money to renew the music licenses for the songs they removed

Profchaos115d ago

This isn't Grove St games it's the team that fixed Grove St games mess in the recent Netflix Android and iOS versions and ported the improvements to the console recently.

Game is significantly overhauled today as a result.

-Foxtrot115d ago

It’s an improvement but I still don’t think it’s the best it could have been.

Profchaos114d ago

True it's an improvement but they did have to work with what they had and that was a ultra janky port of a mobile game thrown together by like 4 people per game.

Seriously in the old version after completing vice city I saw Grove St employees were listed and there was only 4 people in it there's bigger teams out there working on homebrew games.

KwietStorm_BLM115d ago

And still has Grove Street Games scrubbed from the credits.

DafunkyRebel115d ago (Edited 115d ago )

Rockstar saw the absolute botch of the Definitive Edition of their most beloved games as a personal insult and decided to destroy the studio responsible and renamed it entirely. Probably fired a bunch of people too. Its Rockstar's legacy they tarnished so I would be absolutely furious if I was an executive over there
