Has the 3DS killed any chance the PSP had left?

The PSP has been on life support for quite a while now and the utterly disastrous release of the PSPGo starkly showed how little Sony understands what we as consumers are looking for in a handheld.

But as we recently posted they have now at least gotten themselves a decent advertising campaign and with promises of over 40 new PSP titles before Christmas you could be forgiven for thinking their is life in the old girl yet.

And then the 3DS explodes onto front stage. The only real benefit the PSP has had over the DS family in recent years was pure graphical power with the PSP being able to render movies, top notch ingame graphics and reasonably effective audio.

I think the 3DS is really just a new handheld generation it seems. Sony will have to join it eventually with the PSP2 I figure.

As for the current PSP: I think it has a very strong lineup with the likes of KH:BBS, FF13Agito, 3rd Birthday, new Monster Hunter. It still has quality software going for it.

Dragun6195113d ago

PSP Line up

Persona 3 Portable
God Eater
Monster Hunter 3
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep
Final Fantasy XIII Agito
Parasite Eve: The 3rd Birthday
Resident Evil Portable
Valkyria Chronicles 2
Knights in the Nightmare
Patapon 3
God of War: Ghost of Sparta

PSP has a good Line up of Games. Hopefully at TGS Sony will show some focus on the PSP and announce anything related such as price cut, PSP2 or more PSP games. PSP still has plenty of chances left.

I used to be a console (PS2) gamer.

But when the I bought my PSP-NDS & their respective games, it change my opinion entirely about hand-held games.........

I never thought I was used to underestimated hand-held games (Nintendo Gameboy Advance era & before it).........

I enjoy playing Chrono Trigger, Devil Survivor, Loveplus, etc, on my DS, while Peace Walker, Resistance Retribution, Killzone Liberation, Tokimeki Memorial 4, etc, on my PSP.

Bring it future handheld games on DS, PSP, 3DS, and PSP2!!!

GWAVE5113d ago

The PSP is a friggin' awesome system. I love handhelds. I will continue to buy PSP games and I will buy the PSP2. With that said, the PSP2 will definitely have to step it up.

Substance1015113d ago

@dragun619

A single mario game will outsell all the games you mentioned combined.

In the end nintendo will be profitable. Cant say the same for Sony, consider the development costs for all those games. Couple that with poor sales and we know why PSP2 has been delayed so far.

-Alpha5113d ago (Edited 5113d ago )

The 3DS is bound to continue selling like a beast. With that said the PSP has done well for itself. But it's an OLD ass handheld right now and we really need to see the PSP2.

And didn't Sony say PSP will last ten years like a week ago? Not a good idea and hopefully a lie.

Nintendo will always dominate the handheld scene. The touch screen creates innovative gameplay and the 3D is sure to continue that innovation.

Unfortunately I feel this was the problem with the PSP: It was like a mini PS2 in that it tried to emulate the console into handheld-form. We see a lot of PS3/PS2 games on the PSP and I think the PSP needs to be more individualistic as a handheld.

But the PSP has sold very well for numerous reasons. I've seen people use it as an MP3, to play games, etc. Unfortunately the UMD was a failure, digital distribution is killing sales, and the PSN store isn't as attractive or full as the App store (which sells similar games like Minis do). I don't know what Sony's strategy is, but if they aren't going to keep up with Nintendo's advancements then they will have to catch up with 3DS.

I think Sony's PSP marketing has always been that they have a different market to DS (older gamers), and therefore they don't care about fighting for the DS market (which they see as kids). I think that's a dangerously faulty assumption and I've seen Sony say it a lot. The DS is appealing to a lot of older gamers too. Whether they are playing a casual game or playing some RPG, a lot of people like the DS.

captain-obvious5113d ago

I don't think so
its a new hardware the only way to respond to that is a another new hardware

raztad5113d ago (Edited 5113d ago )

"Unfortunately I feel this was the problem with the PSP: It was like a mini PS2 in that it tried to emulate the console into handheld-form. We see a lot of PS3/PS2 games on the PSP and I think the PSP needs to be more individualistic as a handheld."

If THAT is true why I see people ubber excited about some remakes of old games like MGS3 on the 3DS?

What ultimately damaged PSP chances to be a competitive platform WESTERN-SIDE (PSP is doing pretty well in Japan so far) was the brutal piracy plaguing the system, which made the PSP a less than interesting platform for third party support.

The PSP is due for a revision, meanwhile as some have already pointed out, its current line up is more than stellar. Hell, I'll be buying more PSP games than PS3s the rest of the year. BTW MGS:PW is brilliant guys dont miss that out.

HolyOrangeCows5113d ago (Edited 5113d ago )

Well, I think the PSP could potentially benefit for a while. PSP will very likely have the price advantage over the 3DS.

If Sony boosts PSP's lineup, it could possibly see a sales advantage over the 3DS.

That said, I'd like to see a PSP2 eventually.

fatstarr5113d ago (Edited 5113d ago )

It has quality software
im buyin a psp for agito bbs and monster hunter
thats it.

Ppl need to stop comparing 3Ds to Psp
its comparing last gen to next gen
Ex ps2 vs ps3

3Ds automatically wins the next gen hands down cause there is no compettition.

well im not really into handheld gaming but i want a psp, saying that i want a 3ds too

Ult iMate5113d ago (Edited 5113d ago )

Agree.
Why do some of core guys want so desperately for PSP to loose some chances??
Do they feel uncomfortable with PSP on the market or what?
Yes, it's numer two after DS, but where's nubers three, four and five? There's noone exept Nin and Sony. And I suppose noone can stand against Nin but Sony. Because they both can deliver great games to their systems.
PSP has some great games in its library. And Sony is definately bringing innovative, variative and fun games to its handheld. So.. what's wrong with you, guys?? Don't you wanna more good games or what?

And just in case. I have both DS and PSP.

Inside_out5113d ago

Sony caught with there collective pants down on this one. They have been very quiet...too quiet. First they said, we don't think 3D is good...er..I mean it's good, just not on handhelds. Now everybody and there sister wants a 3Ds. Sony is left with PSPGo and PSP that nobody will want.

Sony will announce a new PSP at GDC...they have to if they want to compete with the 3DS. I for one will not buy another handheld UNLESS it has 2 sticks. GDC will be interesting this year.

dredgewalker5113d ago

They said the current technology for handheld 3d is not up to their standards yet, they have never said the psp2 will not have 3d. They just want to make sure that their portable 3d will be better. :)

kneon5113d ago

I've seen prototype non-gaming devices with 3d screens. Yes it's 3d without glasses, but at that small size it's not very impressive, it feels more like a gimmick. people will buy it because of the 3d but in reality it doesn't add much to the experience. You either need a pretty big screen or perhaps a head mounted display for the 3D to be worthwhile.

Ult iMate5113d ago (Edited 5113d ago )

kneon, I think this 3D stuff is mostly for marketing. Yes, it's definately tempting to see 3D without glasses. But the vewing angle is small - a little tilt and 3D effect is gone.
To me touchscreen, analogue controller, camera, gyroscope and accelerometer mean more for gameplay than 3D.
And I'm definately buying a 3DS. But not because of 3D but for the good games lineup.

Woah Woah. where is all this coming from?

Firstly, the damn console isnt even out yet. Secondly, who's to say Sony isnt coming out with a 3d touchscreen psp-phone with rumble support and PS2.5 gfx?

OSU_Gamer5113d ago

If they are developing a 3D handheld, you will have to wear glasses. Until they can steal the auto-stereoscopic tech from Nintendo, there wont be a new PSP.

kerrak5113d ago

Hard to digest, but there's not nasa technology in 3ds. You have to be in a very precise position in order to see the effect. It's not a magical screen.
What does really add 3ds to the table if it pretends to be the next generation of handhelds?

Cloudberry5113d ago

---------------------------
"You have to be in a very precise position in order to see the effect. It's not a magical screen."

Really? :o

OSU_Gamer5113d ago

either way kerrak,

PSP won't sell if you have to have glasses. Assuming that they don't have the tech, based on their new TVs, they would have to have glasses for the PSP.

stb5113d ago (Edited 5113d ago )

@ cloud...guess you thought flying sht going at for you...huh, thats right, you need to be in a precise position to get a hold of the effect, being that said, that is why some sony person, said what he did a while back about 3D not so effective in handhelds...have anyone here even played games in 3D on the ps3...and know what is true 3D at gaming...cus I did, and by what I read, 3DS doesn't even touch that, but the fck, do want a 3DS nonetheless.

kneon5113d ago

No one has to steal the tech, Nintendo doesn't own it nor did they invent it (have they ever invented anything?)

This tech is not new, but it's totally unsuitable for a TV, that's why no one is using it for that. You could use it for a TV provided that everyone who buys one can place their chair at the particular distance and height required to see the 3D effect. Plus I hope you don't expect to have friends over to watch TV or you are really close to the ones you have because the only way they will see the 3D is to be sitting on you lap :)

Multi-viewer glasses-free 3D TV displays do exist, but they still have limitations and the price is not commercially viable.

I wouldn't say killed it...but Nintendo sure knows there handhelds. We'll just have to see how PSP ad campaign goes...

MariaHelFutura5113d ago

Nintendo has been leading the handheld "war" for a long time. I think Sony is aware of this, their probably happy with whatever they can get in that market.

YourFlyness5113d ago (Edited 5113d ago )

The PSP2 need to be announce now! And I hate to say it but Sony needs to whore the PSP out to the RPG and Casual crowd, thats the only chance they have agaisnt the 3DS and success in Japan. And advertisment, advertisment, advertisment! which they are starting to do.

Sony Rewards Program Is Coming To An End on Dec. 31, 2024

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it is ending the Sony Rewards program on December 31, 2024, and as a result that date will be the last time possible to redeem points and access your account.

helicoptergirl3d ago

This is a shame. I've been using it since the start. It had a few problems and issues but overall I did end up saving a little bit over 60 dollars using this program. There was probably not enough people using it.

Cacabunga2d ago

Is it playstation stars?? I really never understood it. I am still level 1

PS_HCT2d ago

This is not playstation stars. Sony Rewards is a US rewards program linked to a visa credit card.

darthv722d ago

I just checked... I have 144 points at the moment. Not even enough to get a $5 PS card. I can get a $1 digital gift card to Target or home Depot though.

blackblades2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I thought they were been done with this, I redeem some good stuff with this in the past. Wonder how much i got its been awhile

OtterX3d ago

I've gotten so many free games throughout the years w this program, this sucks. I've been with it since the beginning.

I just run a majority of my needed purchases through it and pay it off immediately instead of using cash or debit. The most recent was on Tuesday I got a $10 dlc free. It was great as long you're not borrowing out large amounts of money that you don't have.

ChasterMies3d ago

Realistically, those weren’t free games. You could have used another cards rewards points or bought Sony products on sale and then used the savings to buy PlayStation games.

OtterX3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Well there was a large boost on any purchase made on PSN, so there was an incentive to use over other cards' rewards. It used to be better, then they lowered it. I forget the exact multiplier though.

I pretty much got this $10 DLC free this week just by resubbing my PS+ Premium. (On sale during Days of Play) Not a lot of other cards would give that much back

dumahim2d ago

Right. I can do the same thing with my credit card rewards, but I have much more flexibility in what I can redeem those points for, including buying PS games.

shadowT3d ago

I never owned the credit card. Was this program available in Europe and Asia?

Profchaos3d ago

Seriously it was awesome Ive gotten a few free psn vouchers out of it.

FPSRUSSIA3d ago

i remember getting Assassin creed black flag for free with Redeeming my Points for 10 dollars when it was on sale this is very sad news.

OtterX3d ago

I actually believe that was one of my first cashouts on the program! haha

I remember I had just gotten the PS4 and I used it on Black Flag or Battlefield 4 to go with it.
I'm pretty sure I remember it being Black Flag though! (Great choice, as it became my favorite AC of all time)

Sony shares big new PS Plus stat, but not the one we want to see

PlayStation Plus has improved the split of PS4 and PS5 players on its priciest tiers, but Sony continues to hide total subscriber numbers.

mandf22d ago

lol acting like it’s equivalent to ms numbers

Mr Logic22d ago

Uh...They're definitely not equivalent.

"Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass service now has 34 million subscribers."

"the total number of PS Plus subscribers across all tiers was 47.4 million"

darthv7222d ago (Edited 22d ago )

That PSN number seems like it should be much higher... especially when you consider that PS4 alone has a sell through of over 117m. To not even be at least half that is rather interesting.

To the XB side, having 34m to an install base of roughly 50m (XBO sell through) or even 85m (360 sell through) is a greater percentage of unit to member ratio than PSN.

That's not the "gotcha" you think it is Darth.

fr0sty22d ago

MS started lumping gold subscribers in with those GP numbers... keep in mind.

shinoff218322d ago (Edited 22d ago )

What. Definitely more os plus subscribers but that makes sense due to actual console sales

Darth the difference between the bases are huge your right but you gotta think. Ps players buy more games, where as the Xbox base relies on gamepass for their gaming. So it makes perfect sense

darthv7222d ago (Edited 22d ago )

What makes perfect sense though? You say PS players buy more games... so then logically there should be more PS+ subscribers given the increased number of online multiplayer games in the PS4 generation alone. The PS4 was the first time that + was required for online play much like Gold was for 360 users.

Keep in mind we are talking subscribers, not simply XB/PS users. I assume you meant to say offline single player games, which is most likely true as well. That gen also saw a significant increase in games with an online component comparted to the previous gen.

victorMaje22d ago

I for one will be going back to essential at the next renewal. When I feel a game is good & right up my alley, I’ll check trusted reviews & just buy it.

jznrpg22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

I have the top tier until 2028 as they gave me a massive discount for all the years I had left but I’ll most likely go to essential as well. I buy my games but my kids do use the service occasionally. They do prefer to own their games as well since any game can leave the rental service at some point and they don’t like that idea. They mostly use it to demo games then ask me to buy games if they really like it.

RedDevils22d ago

For me, I will cancel it all together but unfortunately I still have it till 2030 lol

meganick22d ago

I would like to see Sony add a fourth tier of PS Plus for people who just want to be able to play games online without any of the perks like monthly games, store discounts, or anything like that, and it should cost $20 annually, $30 maximum. There’s no way I’m paying $80 just to play games online. Even the original $60 fee was too much, and I would often wait for sales to re-up my subscription.

P_Bomb22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Essential is too expensive, I agree. We’ve got one Essential and one Premium sub. Dropping the Premium when it expires.

gamerz22d ago

Just let my subscription lapse for the first time since 2010. Will sub again every now and then for a month or so to access my old ps+ games but for me it's the end of an era.

DivineHand12522d ago

Let those numbers continue to drop because it is now too expensive. $80 per year just to play online. I noticed they didn't offer any discounts on the subscription or controllers during this year's days of play for the first time in many years and they will feel it when people choose not to renew.

My subscription will lapse next month and it will stay that way until further notice.

KevtheDuff22d ago

There were savings on subs and controllers here in the UK? I bought a controller yesterday in the sale..
It would be weird if those deals were not in other territories too?

Sony Says The PS5 Is Its “Most Profitable Generation To-Date"

During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”

It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.

Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.

ApocalypseShadow24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

I wouldn't doubt it. They released a high quality system. A lot of high quality games from themselves and their support of 3rd party developers and indies. They released many high quality remakes and remasters. They released a high quality GaaS game going against the naysayers thinking Sony would abandon single player games. And they most likely are profiting a lot more than PS1, PS2 PS4 and the loss leading PS3 that drained all their profits.

Now, I'll wait to see what's cooking tomorrow. But can you use some of those profits to better support your high quality VR headset? Because, by supporting it, you can sell more games and more systems and make more profits?

jznrpg24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

I want RPGs for PSVR2! Good ones of course

shinoff218324d ago

If it had some rpgs I would buy right fking now. It looks dope and alot of fun, but it's biggest game resident evil 4(maybe) I've got no interest in. I'm not a fan of racing games, even with that metro game coming i was never much into that series. Rpgs would be fantastic.

MrNinosan24d ago

Lemme know if ya wanna play some Zenith 🙌
Bought it at release, but haven't played it more than 1-2 hours but for sure on my "todo list".

Cacabunga24d ago

Normal when they released mostly cross gen games so far. That’s a lot of money saved..
We haven’t seen what PS5 can do yet. 4years in and PS4 games still look great to me. The gen leap isn’t quite there yet.

--Onilink--24d ago

The interesting metric for me is the $106billion in operating income/profit (not sales as mentioned in the article) reaching the same as the PS4 did with only half the consoles sold.

In particular because they all are supposed to be making the most per hardware sold after a few years when manufacturing costs are down.

So even putting inflation aside(and the higher console price), it is interesting that they could reach PS4 $ with just half the consoles sold.

Maybe there is more to the metric thats whats seen at face value, but they have clearly been making a lot more money than before on the software side (with also less games released I suppose, given its only been half the generation so far)

VersusDMC24d ago

The bulk of the money has to be coming from the 30% cut on all games and microtransactions. Especially on all the free to play juggernauts like genshin, apex, fortnight, etc.

--Onilink--24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

@Versus

They are definitely making a lot on that for sure (which the $70 price increase factors into as well), but its not like many of those games werent around for the PS4 too.

They might be counting the gen as a whole and not just PS5 itself (so extra profit from PC sales, whatever that may be)

PS+ price increase and different tiers probably amount to part of that too.

But in general, its still quite a surprising metric. Half the time, half the consoles sold, less first party games released so far and still already making more of a profit than last gen is quite something, and as mentioned, there is probably more to it that we dont know, after all, since we are talking about operating income, all the expenses they have also factor into it, so it is also possible that they have found ways to significantly reduce that + all the means of increased revenue that appear to be factoring into the equation

All in all, just an interesting situation from a business perspective

porkChop24d ago

It's for the whole generation, so it would likely be including PC. They also make much more profit on digital sales vs retail, and digital is far more prominent these days. The generation also started at the height of COVID when everyone was home, spending far more money on gaming/hobbies. It makes a lot of sense for this gen to be more profitable.
