Top 5 great games with bad graphics

In honour of all the stick Twisted Metal’s visuals have been getting after the game’s first PS3 reveal, here’s a rundown of the best PlayStation games to have fallen out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.

Both reports are claiming that these games all looked good at the time they were released. This simply is not true of any of them.

One also claims the article says Silent Hill is too gloomy. It does not.

Nike5452d ago

Okay, explain me this: How is that Disgaea is considered to have terrible graphics? You're blatantly subscribing to the point that 3D graphics are automatically better than 2D graphics. The issue is way too complex to simply dismiss as one being better than the other. It's like saying cel-shaded graphics aren't as great as realistic graphics, when in fact it's a matter of how the aesthetics of both are suited to a game or not.

As for the other games, I'm sorry to say but some of those games were considered good looking in the day. And considering these were in the 90's - almost a completely different time in terms of graphics and sound - it's not hard to believe some people back then found those games good looking.

Also, I believe the author (who may be you, I don't know) edited the article when he saw the criticism against "Silent Hill looking too gloomy" just so he could call out the person reporting. Very mature of you, sir.

Games4M - Rob5452d ago

The game he should have mentioned was Disgaea 3 - that game has zero excuse for looking the way it does on a next gen console, dunno why they didnt just release it on the PSP.

Akagi5452d ago

Or, you know, you could respect his opinion as we would with yours.

Nike5452d ago

Would've done that if only he hadn't called out my report in the comments section (that's what the disagree section is for in the reports). :)

SuperMassiveGav5452d ago

And I did not edit the article. You clearly just didn't read it properly first.

Disgaea's graphics are a mix of bad 2D and bad 3D. Overall, they're bad.

Back then, people found these games ugly, as reviews written at the time will attest.

At least you apologised for not knowing what you're talking about. Apology accepted.

Nike5452d ago

Me: "As for the other games, I'm sorry to say but some of those games were considered good looking in the day."

Gav: "At least you apologised for not knowing what you're talking about. Apology accepted."

Talk about not reading things properly, but judging from your response, are you retarded or something? And how about posting some of the reviews "at that time" to lend credence to your claims? Douchebag.

Montrealien5452d ago (Edited 5452d ago )

SuperMassiveGav , you have no idea what you are talking about...

Silent Hill at the time was a great looking game, I bought that game day one and no one in their right minds would of said the game looked bad at the time for a console game at the time, that would of been just dumb.

Twisted Metal also looks good for the time, in fact, I will stop there. I feel like I will just be arguing with a kid that tells me that the 1933 King Kong looks horrible. You have to see it from the stand point of when it came out.

but whatever, its his opinion, I just don't agree with it, at all.

and just to mess with you gav..

Silent Hill review, gamespot, yeah, the internet existed back then...

http://www.gamespot.com/ps/...

score 8.2

"Aside from a slightly grainy cast to Silent Hill's look, its graphics are pretty tight"

Twisted metal 2

http://www.gamespot.com/ps/...

score 8.8

"The only downside of TM2 is game control."

Redempteur5452d ago

disgaea is bad 3D but it's certainly NOT bad 2D..

Also there is nothing wrong with GTA graphics AT the time of the release

Anon19745452d ago

It's ridiculous to look back at these older games and judge them based on their graphics. You might as well write an article about "best movies with the worst color" and review a bunch of black and white classics.

In their day these games had fantastic graphics.

The images are so bad, were that taken using a phone?

SuperMassiveGav5452d ago

All the PSone images were taken using whatever technology was available to take screens at the time. They were used in magazines and any screens in magazines would have been of similar quality at the time.

PopEmUp5452d ago (Edited 5452d ago )

I think there no phone that have a camera at the time, just wondering how old were you at the time?

Christopher5451d ago

I dunno, I didn't think the graphics of TM3 looked that bad. Are we at the point where graphics > gameplay, especially during an alpha build?

mushroomwig5452d ago

Obviously they look bad compared to the games released today but back then they were fine, think what games will look like in 10 years time compared to the ones today..we'll be laughing.

Also, Twisted Metal for the PS3 doesn't have to look like Uncharted 2.

PainisCupcake5452d ago

GTA didn't look that bloody bad on PS1, I know PC had a higher res, but that's ridiculous.

ElementX5452d ago

They should be showing top PS3 games with bad graphics, not PS1 and PS2 era games.

mushroomwig5452d ago (Edited 5452d ago )

It should be about all current generation video games. =]

Corrwin5452d ago

Yet they've done much better than expected (even by your average Halo Fanboy's standards).

thief5452d ago (Edited 5452d ago )

We are talking great games with bad graphics, not average games with bad graphics and great sales
Another one for the list: MAG. The greatest game ever that had average graphics (by PS3 standards).

PopEmUp5452d ago

I thought warhawk should be include too then

Corrwin5452d ago

Halo may be average, but it's addictive as hell for millions.

You don't need complicated game play and narrative to be a good game: see Tetris, Mario Bros etc.

TM3 is my favorite but I'll take what they bring out gladly. Fun times back in the day and great soundtracks

Cacabunga238d ago

Last one on ps4 wasn’t good at all.
Hoping for some good reboot or remake of the first 3

Dagexon238d ago

You mean the one on ps3?

Cacabunga238d ago

Yes i do, thanks! I realized too late couldn’t edit

badboyz09239d ago (Edited 239d ago )

Lego 2K Drive features an exciting mode called Brick Brawl, inspired by Twisted Metal. Players can create, share, and upload various cars, including ones like Sweet Tooth. The game boasts thousands of custom cars, ranging from the Batmobile to the Sweet Tooth ice cream truck.

InUrFoxHole239d ago

Never understood the like for the series. Not my bag but I know a lot of gamers are clamoring for a new game and liked the TV. Series

TiredGamer239d ago (Edited 239d ago )

TM1 and 2 are time period classics. They were a bit rough, ugly, and grungy, but they felt right during the time period they were released and they scratched that early console “death match” itch before FPS games would completely swallow that market.

Many great memories with friends playing couch co-op and 1v1. Short, and quick-and-dirty gameplay that we returned to over and over. I’d buy a remake or proper remastering of the first two games day one.

InUrFoxHole238d ago

Lol, nice! I remember having the tiger handheld or watch..

FinalFantasyFanatic238d ago

I played those so much as I kid, I bought the Twisted Metal games that were on PSN as Playstation Classics, wow, they feel clunky by today's standards, they could really use the remake/remaster treatment.

UltimateOwnage238d ago

Twisted Metal: Black is when the series really hit for me. I still love that game so much. It was kind of downhill for the series after that IMO. I'd love to see the series go back to its roots, but I don't hold out a lot of hope for David Jaffe coming back from where he is these days to oversee development of a competent sequel.

Snookies12238d ago

Black was the pinnacle in my opinion. I adored TM1 and TM2, for sure. But Black brought it to a whole new level of awesome.

All I ask for is a new Twisted Metal that allows flat screen & PSVR2 cross play that also supports a wheel.
Would be heaven.

Babadook7674d ago

Wow. I like the idea of VR twisted metal with a wheel.

Rebel_Scum674d ago

They need to get the enemy AI balance right. Thats what made 2 the best in the series. Black was abysmal in that dept.

neomahi674d ago

You don't. Do sequels. If you've gotta reboot, might as well do a new IP. God of War is the only game I can say that did a successful reboot

TiredGamer674d ago (Edited 674d ago )

Isn’t the new GoW just a sequel technically?

I personally think they can leverage the roots of the series. The original TM in 1995 took place on Christmas Eve 2005, and it was the 10th contest in history. Why not “reboot” the franchise by making a prequel of sorts showing the origin story of the series and maybe linking all the future games in a brilliant way. Seems like such an obvious idea to leverage old with the new (kind of look how Doom 2016 did with its lore).

Knightofelemia674d ago

Just make it a good game Twisted Metal has it's fan base.
