Nintendo 3DS Specs Comparison: 3DS vs PSP vs iPhone 3GS

Now that we know what kind of graphics hardware is running the 3DS, we can begin to set our expectations on how it will compare to current handheld gaming devices. This chart compares the 3DS technical specifications to the PSP, iPhone 3GS, and original DS. How does it compare?

great looks like the 3ds is blowing the psp and the ipod out of the water
sure it does only 15M polygons but the gamecube had like 12M polygons and yet i didn't saw any game on the app store or on the psp that had surpassed the gamecube graphics

SpoonyRedMage5462d ago

I'll post what I posted in the other comments but the specs are the 2006 ones for the 3DS chip and it has improved since then:

In 2008 the polygon was 40 mil/sec as you can see in the image attached and it has likely improved from there in the last two years.

We know the lower limit of the 3DS' power but not exactly how powerful it is.

lowlight5462d ago

The article was just updated to include the 2008 specs.

Its close to a PSP, but it still has to fill a 0.5 megapixel screen.

SpoonyRedMage5462d ago (Edited 5462d ago )

I'm not an expert of anything but why would we assume it will run at only 100mHz?

Doesn't the DS run at over at that anyway? and the PSP started off at 200 and is now over 300 isn't it?

Is it due to the different power consumption?

EDIT: Also isn't it entirely possible that the CPU or ARM processor will handle the bottom screen like with the DS as due to the design of the device they're clearly targetting the graphical experience for the top screen which means they won't need powerful graphics for the bottom screen meaning the GPU can be solely responsible for the top screen?

...and what I've heard the secondary rendering for the 3D effect takes around the same amount of power a split screen in games does not just simply doubling the requirements. Is that wrong?

EDIT2: In fact, it seems someone in that Neogaf thread is claiming that at 400mHz it's only using between 0.2 and 0.4 watts which I'm sure is lower than the DS uses.

lowlight5462d ago

That's me in the GAF thread ;)

I am rewriting this article as new information comes in, and I perform more testing on the PSP.

You're right, it is safe to assume they are going to clock it at least 400 MHz, but probably no higher. Unfortunately it's not easy to draw a conclusion with these numbers just yet. So all we can do is comment on the MINIMUM performance is going to be :)

Dorfdad5462d ago

FAIL comparing it to old tech (3GS) from the start. How about the iPhone 4 2x ram Better resolution faster processor and does shit loads more.

Found the latest clock speeds and performance. Updating AGAIN

well, the switch 2 has two holidays in the us, thanksgiving and Christmas.

so id say its fairly possible. the rest of the world will also grab them

Abriael27d ago

Yeah doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility as long as they have enough supply.

Si-Fly26d ago

Do people buy each other games consoles for Thanksgiving? I’m in Europe and always assumed it was just Christmas where gifts were exchanged.

Skate-AK26d ago

I don't think it's so much Thanksgiving, but that Black Friday is the day after.

darthv7226d ago (Edited 26d ago )

That time is often referred to as the start of the Xmas shopping season. For the last few years, retailers would do 'black Friday' deals at various times throughout the year. While many still prefer to start their shopping in the mid to late November, others will just buy when they feel the time (and prices) are right for them.

gold_drake26d ago

i guess its more black friday, should have been more clear ha

GotGame81826d ago (Edited 26d ago )

Thanksgiving kicks off the Christmas Holiday.

Switch and Switch are a different kettle of fish. A sell out at launch by the diehards, strong sales, then the non diehards will be put off by the £75 ($99) games, including the stupid download cards which are topping £65 ($85). Not rocket science to work out how the Switch 2 is going to pan out. The PS5 has sold well, but games at £70, sales have been low. As game sales drop, prices will rise. Sony could knock out all their games for £40 and still make a killing selling more games. There's no denying that a gaming crash is looming.

Rancegamerx26d ago

I agree, I don't see the Switch 2 selling anywhere near the numbers that these predictions suggest or what the general buzz is implying. While the initial sales will likely be strong, driven by diehard fans, I anticipate a gradual decline. It may not drop off immediately, but over time, sales will inevitably taper.

PRIMORDUS26d ago

Not paying for something that's not worth more than the price it was advertised, which is $449 - $499.

Why Portability Still Matters for Nintendo Switch 2—and What We’re Hoping to See

Nintendo Switch 2 upgrades portability with a bigger screen, 1080p handheld play, and Wi-Fi 6. Here's why it still matters in 2025.

As someone who travels for work I still care about portable systems.

I have found using remote play in a hotel room is an excellent experience in a major city as I've got my console hard wired to a gigabit connection at home however it's not perfect if power trips the console tends to go to the repair section and can't be booted remotely so it's a annoying call to family to power it on for me.

A hotel out of town or regionally though that can cause havok for remote play as I'm always on 5g using it hotel wifi is never good enough for a solid remote play session.

But leaving a stable location and getting onto a plane or train and there's little to no chance of a good experience with remote play thats where something like the switch 2 will really shine for me personally long haul flights are exhausting and one of my most hated things the switch has been invaluable for me and I'll absolutely be upgrading

Goodguy0136d ago

Nintendo has always done it the best, handheld is in their genes. I do wish their dock could be like an egpu though and it make it much more powerful, it's a bit harder for me to play portable now for some odd reason, love just sitting on the couch with a big screen and controller. And ofc always great to have the portable option and for me it's best for smaller games.

jznrpg36d ago

I was hoping for a little more than 540p upscaled

UltimateOwnage36d ago

IMO, 540P upscaled in portable mode to a 1080P screen using DLSS on the tensor cores will likely extend battery life using a lower TDP and provide much better anti-aliasing and similar clarity compared to native 1080P with med/low AA at a higher TDP. It’s just a better way to use a mobile chipset. That’s not a flaw or weakness, it’s a key benefit for the portable design of the platform.

repsahj36d ago

Lol, even the impressive upscaling feature of Switch 2 can now spin to a negative one.

jznrpg35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Switch 1 was hitting 720p and above that with no upscale, so why can’t they have a higher res and upscale it more

repsahj35d ago

@jznrpg
Because of that even the current gen games will now run on switch 2 that looked as good and with decent framerate as the current gen consoles.

Do you watch Nintendo's hands on preview for switch 2? LOL.

badz14936d ago

because aside from Nintendo's own games which have their dedicated fanbase, portability is the only other thing it has going for it. Nintendo will be eliminated faster than xbox if they ever decide to do a dedicated home console again. going the hybrid way is the only way left for them and they are lucky they dominated the portable market all those years ago. imagine the power of the Switch 2 as a console this day and age with the same price as PS5. they will be the laughing stock of the market.
