Sony Clarifies PlayStationPlus, Cross-Game Chat, Regional-only Features, and Content

Yesterday, several European regions listed cross-game chat as an upcoming feature for the incoming PlayStation Plus service, which will cost $50 for a year subscription. This was a moment of great excitement for PS3 owners, but Sony was quick to remove the feature and deny it'll be part of the cross-game chat, though they haven't outright denied if it would come in firmware 3.40, yet.

THANK YOU! This has been ridiculously confusing to figure out.

Queasy5482d ago

Making it regional won't help.

bjornbear5482d ago

due to regions having varying laws/copyrights and bureaucracies.

YoungKiller255482d ago

Xross game chat is not regional, PSN+ has regional features.

Xross game chat is coming later this month as part of 3.40 FW

dabri55481d ago

Wait so is cross game chat free or part of PSN+? I'm confused again.

sikbeta5481d ago (Edited 5481d ago )

@ Above

1·XGC is Free apparently:

"Cross-game voice chat was not announced as part of PlayStation Plus"

2·PSN will be FREE for ever, This is PlayStation Plus (PS+):

"The full features of PlayStation Plus, which will vary region by region:

* Full game trial- Members will have access to full versions of designated PS3® and PlayStation Network titles including PS one® Archives (PS one® Classics). The titles on offer will be available for download on PlayStation Store for a stated period and change every month. Members will be able to play the full version of the game for a designated period and even after the trial period expires, users will be able to continue playing the game by purchasing the game on-line.
* Games - Member will be able to play the full version of designated PS3 downloadable and PlayStation Network titles including PS one Archives (PS one Classics) and minis with no limit of time as long as membership is effective. These games will become available exclusively for PlayStation Plus members at no extra cost.
* Special content - Content such as avatars and custom themes many of which are exclusive will become available for PlayStation Plus members at no extra cost.
* Discounts - Members will have access to exclusive discounts on designated PS3 and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) titles. Titles will vary every month on PlayStation Store.
* Early access - Members will have early access to designated new game beta trials, game demos and video content prior to public distribution.
* Automatic content downloads and updates - PS3 will automatically download and install designated game demos and game updates and also download the system software update data. PS3 will automatically start up at a designated time to download content and will turn off after the download has completed."

It doesn't say anything about XGC being a Feature to Pay (edited)

PSN+ is technically a great value considering what u get..but I don't need it.

ClownBelt5482d ago

@ deadreckoning666

Not really. You're just basically renting what you get on that service.

Raf1k15482d ago (Edited 5482d ago )

True but TBH I don't think anyone needs it considering everything we have now will still be available for free thought access to betas and the free games per month is enticing.

edit: Yeah it is a bit crap that you only have those games for the duration of your membership but I think LBP comes totally free or is that a rental too?

Godmars2905482d ago

You're getting access to it.

Its literally the same argument with XBL, only its something other than online access. Its access to content.

PoSTedUP5482d ago (Edited 5482d ago )

you get discounts on games like %40 off (and you get to keep those), you get free games every month, the qore subscription, you get to play ANY game you want for an hour to try it out b4 you buy it, get into most betas (cmon thats awesome) and some other features. plus if you buy it right away you get LBP (which is good even if you have it cause you can sell it and use the DD one) and you get everything else that comes with the PSN plus they said they will continue to add features and upgrade it too so...

i think its worth it, i wish i had it right now because it would save me a lot of money in games with the free ones and with the discount, and with betas (another form of free entertainment)

AND we'll be trying it out for free for four months so then you can really decide if you like it or not.

ima get it for sure

callahan095482d ago

@ClownBelt:

NetFlix is a content delivery service for movies, and it costs more than twice the price of PS+ annually. PS+ is content delivery for games. When you look at it like that, you see how it can be a very valuable service.

shadow27975481d ago

Just to clarify: LBP is for SCEE regions (Europe) and Wipeout HD goes to SCEA regions (NA).

xino5481d ago

PSN is still free! you don't have to get PSN Plus, it's not forcing.

PSN + is only a renting if you want free games!
" Games - Member will be able to play the full version of designated PS3 downloadable and PlayStation Network titles including PS one Archives (PS one Classics) and minis with no limit of time as long as membership is effective. These games will become available exclusively for PlayStation Plus members at no extra cost."
So basically, if you want to play PS3 and PS1 games without BUYING, you have to be a subscriber to try them! Once you cancel your subscription, you won't be able to play those games anymore!
You ONLY RENT PS3/PSN/Mini/PS1 games.

Also let me add that if you cancel your subscription, you can't get automatic downloads, beta could cancel and no more discounts!

PSN free stuff can be owned! Why should Sony stop you from using your avatar you bought when you were a subscriber? how much is an avatar? £0.60p. It doesn't matter if you cancel your subscription because you still get to keep your backgrounds, avatars, early demos, trials and themes.

The true about this is that Xbox Live actually does some of these things PSN+ offers.
Gold members gets early access to demos
Gold members gets discounts on arcades and other stuff
Full game trials for their arcades

but it doesn't matter man! PSN+ sounds like a damn bargain!
As long as we don't get chessy free contents:/

LinuxGuru5481d ago

Ok, clarification.

YOU DO NOT LOSE PURCHASES YOU MAKE WITH A PSN + ACCOUNT

YOU ONLY LOSE FREE STUFF GIVEN TO YOU AND THE OTHER PERKS WHEN YOU TERMINATE YOUR SUBSCRIPTION.

Red-Dead-Roar5481d ago

darkdoom30005481d ago

It's regional because different games on the stores, different discounts, and only the US has qore, firstplay is the UK version, which is only avalible in the UK. the rest of the world dont get a vid mag.

amazing that people can still say that reg. PSN is just as good as LIVE, when PSN+ is what you have to buy in order to get SOME of the features of LIVE

NYC_Gamer5482d ago (Edited 5482d ago )

Features? ok what features does live have? live is the most useless service ever offered by any gaming company, xbox live has a bunch of applications i can access on my PC f free, i see NOTHING that makes it worth 50 bucks a year, there is nothing that stands out and makes you say i need live, but i can tell you this, before i pay for last fm and facebook and twitter ill use them on my PC for free, hence the keyword FREE, and not to mention you cant watch netflix without being a gold member gotta love that useless xbox live huh? yeah xbox live is truly the best for robbing people blind.

SillySundae5482d ago (Edited 5482d ago )

It's like comparing ...

Bill Gates wearing a jet pack (he bought using $$$)
VS
The 90's Michael Jordan

... and saying Bill Gates can jump higher that Michael Jordan.

You can't compare the two since the other one has spent money (or an add-on).

But we really know who can do a slam dunk "sort of out of the box"?

baodeus5481d ago (Edited 5481d ago )

@Nyc Gamer (are you seriously believe the PSN experience is better?)

you don't get it. The uniform aspect of Live is what make it so great. Yes you can get netflix, twitter, facebook, ESPN example for free on PC, but you know what, since i can just stream those on x360, i haven't touch my laptop since plus i don't have to hook my laptop up to the tv everytime i want to watch something. And the fact that if you already have a Gold membership, these add on do add more value to your already paid subscription (plus it is much cheaper now if you buy 13 month from amazon or else where). All the add on run very smoothly since it is integrated as part of live. The community is also great and connection with everyone is so easy that even a cave man can do it. That is the difference between PSN and Live. People feel connected. Live community is very focus on connection with gamers which is main key to Live success.

PSN feel disconnected (well cause it is not uniform across everything). It feels more like an online shopping network for game but not a gaming community. Everything else depends on each developer to provide online aspect for the game (hence not uniform if at all).

PSN+ is great so you guys should try it out. Although since playing game is till for free, i'm not sure how paying just to get more contents would really help pushing PSN+ forward. Evidently, people still just prefer playing on line for free with a uniform cross game communication.

Fishy Fingers5482d ago (Edited 5482d ago )

PSN+ seems more about offering you the chance to get more content, betas, free games, map packs etc than it does about competing with Live on features.

Basically, if you buy a lot of stuff online, PSN+ would probably work out cheaper for you in the long run.

baodeus5481d ago

exactly, but if you don't need those extra content (which i don't think most really care), it is useless. I want PSN to improve the communication aspect for all gamers but i haven't yet to see they implement something like that, which is kinda suck.

sourav935482d ago

How bout you try naming some features that live has that both Psn and PS+ combined doesn't have?
I can name a few features that PS+ provides that live doesn't have (yet).

I don't think you can compare the two (PSN, XBL).
Since they follow a different model.

From a consumer's standpoint this is how I see it:

Out of the box ($0)
====================
PS3: Online play (which is #1 prerequisite of an online gamer)
360: None

Subscription ($50)
======================
PS3: <Features here>
360: <Features here>

Look at this this illustration:
============================= =========

360: "Hey look at this eyeglasses I got, it enables me to see and it gives me night vision too"
PS3: "Wow. I was only born with the ability to see :(. Maybe when I buy a new eyeglass I can have night vision as well".

Get it?

TheAwesomessMan5482d ago (Edited 5482d ago )

Actually, I think I have a better one.

Out of the box:

PS3: Online play. (Hook it up, pop in MW2, done!)
360 S: None

$50 subscription gives you:

PS3: Added features...... and discounts
360 S: Online play plus added features

A good illustration would be comparing a 3D HDTV to the Nintendo 3DS. Both say 3D but Nintendo 3DS comes with 3D displayable out of the box. No need to pay anything else to view it whereas with 3D televison sets you need to pay extra for glasses to see its effects.
Better?

SillySundae5482d ago

I added another illustration.
SEE 2.1.2

callahan095482d ago

@ TheAwesomeMan:

Most HDTV's I've seen come with the glasses for free. Technically speaking they're sold separately, but it's like an instant-discount thing where they throw in the addition of the glasses at no extra cost. That's how Samsung does it anyway, for now.

Biggest5481d ago

That 3D comparison SUCKS! That is like saying a raw fish has some standing next to a full course fish dinner prepared by Wolfgang Puck (does he make fish?).

Back on topic: PSN is great. I never had a problem with finding my friends with their names in big bold letters right in front of me. I don't have a problem finding new friends with all the names of everyone I have run across in big bold letter right in front of me. I have a mouth to talk and ears to hear, and a mic that enables both. I paid nothing for any of what I just said. Now with the PS+ feature (that I won't be subscribing to just yet) I have the chance to buy the PSN games that I want for less. That alone is worth $50 if you buy games. You also get the chance to play games that you are on the fence about. All those games you deem rental because of their review scores? Now you can review some of it yourself, before spending the money on a rental. I won't get into the other random "free" items because if you don't have $50 the next year, you lose them. Enjoy the new service if you want. It sounds like a good deal.

bviperz5481d ago

Horrible example. It's more like this:

PS3: I can see. But for some cash I can do night vision.
360: I can't see. But for some cash I can see and do night vision.

Much better.

Free online play! It doesn't matter what else is offered, that its mandatory to have XBL Gold for online play where its not on PSN will always be the key difference. At least until MS makes it free.

Crystallis5482d ago (Edited 5482d ago )

And Im guessing Sony will offer cross game chat for free. If they do that then thats total win!

Godmars2905482d ago (Edited 5482d ago )

If anything, managing a cross game chat system sounds far more expensive and specific than a structure for online game access. Aside from fanboy complaint, why not make up cost much less show some profit by charging the people who want and, more importantly, will actually use it?

ChozenWoan5481d ago

.
By giving XGC away for free, Sony is in effect negating one of the primary points of value of XBL. To charge for XGC would basically stating that MS has been giving patrons a good deal all this time.

Remember...
... this console war may be a cold war, but it is still a war non the less.

TheAwesomessMan5482d ago (Edited 5482d ago )

Right now, people are in hating mode now because they know we get to play online for free. Plus if we subscribe, we can get all these other things betas, select games, etc. But the thing is that whether or not we subscribe we still get to play online for free. Whereas for xbox live users, you MUST pay to play online. (Rant: IMO, $50 a year is not that bad but seriously paying for online play where I can play Halo on pc for free where I can buy a game for my ps3 and play the multiplayer for free smh M$. End rant)

Crystallis5482d ago (Edited 5482d ago )

PSN+ offers users the choice. Xbox Live does not.

Edit-if you want to play online that is.

The only reason I could think of when it comes to Sony not bringing up cross game chat is either because its either coming as a pleasant surprise or its not coming at all. Ive cried out to Sony on their PS blog personally and have always got the third degree when I asked if it was coming since firmware 2.40. They have not once said it was ever coming. It is probably the most hyped up feature to receive for the system, yet Sony brushes it off as something that is not even relevant. Which it isn't, and is why ,personally, I dont see it coming.

YourFlyness5482d ago

People will continue to be confused if they keep calling it PSN+ (not the author) instead of PS+, PSN is the online service that will continue to improve with online features. PlayStation + is a service the is design to improve the quailty of life of the PSN. PS+ is and additional and optional service, sort of like Netflix. If you dont purchase it, it will not effect your PSN experience.

JAMurida5482d ago (Edited 5482d ago )

What confuses me is how they were saying that PSN+ members can cross game chat with people who don't have PSN+, and the fact that it was announced in the firmware update (though taken down) and not as a feature in PSN+. So does this mean cross game chat will be for everyone for free?

I wish Sony would just confirm the cross game chat thing already and put more details on if it will be just one on one or group chat over games.

I wonder how the USA tariffs war will affect that projection. 🤔

S2Killinit35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

I think they take that into consideration when they announce their projections. Currently, after the xbox price increase, the PRO is cheaper than the series x! That is ridiculous, and it can’t last.

darthv7235d ago

you keep saying that but the price of a PS5 Pro is S699.99 (US) and the price of a Series X is $599.99 (US)

S2Killinit35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

The series x with 2 TB storage space is more expensive than PS5 PRO which also has 2 TB storage space.

darthv7235d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Oh so you are pitting a regular Pro with a special edition X... got it. If you are going so far as trying to compare apples to apples... please add in the optical drive and stand to the Pro. Seeing as the X has both of those by default.

I will help you if you are unable to do so.
PS5 Pro 2tb: $699.99, Optical Drive: $79.99, Stand: $29.99 = $809.97
Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition 2TB: $729.99

35d ago
S2Killinit35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

The PS5 PRO has 2TB storage. The series X with 2TB storage and much weaker, is… more expensive! So yeah, Im pointing out that fact.

Also, the PRO does not require a stand.

Ps: regular series 2TB is $749 (where did u get 729?)

darthv7234d ago

Its right here on the official XB site: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/...

Okay, so no stand for the Pro, but you might still want the optical drive. So $779.98 vs $729.99. A properly outfitted Pro is still more $$ than a 2tb X.

S2Killinit34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

Do I need to mention that the series x is not nearly as powerful as the PS5 PRO?

And no, the PS5 PRO runs just fine without a drive, and people don’t have to buy the drive right away, assuming they want it.

toxic-inferno35d ago

@neutralgamer1992

Not all of us. I'm a big PlayStation fan, and have been since the PSOne. But I can't begin to defend what's happening currently.

At least Nintendo release a large number of games from their major franchises. Sony is just not banking on their established franchises, and yet are raising prices. Not great.

S2Killinit36d ago

Im pretty sure we are going to see a price increase for PRO. I mean think about it, its currently cheaper than xbox series x! That cannot last.

Eonjay35d ago

I'm absolutely sure we will not see a price increase. I don't think we should 'expect' to see price increase because it just adds validity to what Nintendo and Microsoft have done.

darthv7235d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Sorry to pop that bubble but the Pro is not cheaper than a series x... generally speaking (like you are). It is cheaper than one specific version, and doing so by not including the optical drive and stand like the X has by default.

So keep on trying to convince people you are right when everyone knows it's quite the opposite. A stock Pro is $699.99 and a stock X is $599.99. A special edition galactic black 2tb X is $729.99. And if you really want to compare apples to apples... adding the aforementioned optical drive and stand brings that Pro to $809.97 and then they would be on equal footing.

Twisting truths to fit a narrative... I expect better from you S2.

S2Killinit35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

The PS5 PRO has 2TB storage. And the series X with 2TB is more expensive. Which in my opinion is insane conseidering how much more powerful the PRO is. The PS5PRO does not need a stand, it can be used without a stand.

TheKingKratos36d ago

So the Pro is not offering any push in sales at all ?

CrashMania36d ago

It's still an expensive, niche product ultimately. And they exceeded their sales projections for units sold by half a million.

lawox35d ago

"18.5 million units have been shipped during the full fiscal year. This is actually ahead of the 18 million units target set by the company."

They beat their yearly estimate. It's not broken down by device, but it's clearly performing well enough. Since it's been released it's consistently been the second best selling SKU on Amazon only after the the Slim with disc.

rlow135d ago (Edited 35d ago )

I guess you get downvoted for stating facts from Sony’s own lips. What I’m curious about is what their top games of the year were and how much Xbox games contributed to the increase?

CrashMania35d ago

Well, generally 3rd party publisher games contribute the most anyway, so no different to capcom, EA and so on contributing to this figure.

lawox35d ago

That's because the report is actually really good.

They beat the console sales estimate that they set last year March, they have increased users both due to the record numbers of PS4 users and strong PS5 sales which is leading to great profits in sales and user spend.

This report is about the financial health of the PlayStation brand and as a platform PlayStation is stronger than ever. Heck they even have Microsoft putting their biggest franchises on the platform.

35d ago
S2Killinit34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

Well, the facts in the article are positive. Nothing wrong with his comment, but in my opinion it doesn't correctly indicate all the facts and nuances that give context to the reality of things. I downvoted for that only.

Lightning7735d ago

This is exactly what happened to Xbox year's ago. They had no first party and started seeing decline in 1st party sales, which effected their third party games which eventually effected their console sales. A slow decline across the board.

Calm down PS fans I'm not saying PS is becoming like old Xbox. I'm showing examples of the importance of first party output. Look how Xbox finally has compelling first party and things are on a up swing(despite years going on a downswing). I know thanks to PS releases which helps a ton, (which is why Xbox hardware only dropped 6% instead of 30+% like it usually does) The point still stands despite what Genz Trends may go, first party and compelling games sell hardware and software still. Sony's financial quarter is an example of this, of what lower First party output looks like.

No matter they'll be right back on track in due time any time especially with DS2 (not my type of game but I know many like it) and Yotei. They're not Xbox and let things get bad for so many years on end.

crazyCoconuts35d ago

"I'm showing examples of the importance of first party output. "
First party is mostly relevant for the sole purpose of creating EXCLUSIVES that are needed to stay competitive. With Xbox consoles collapsing and no more Xbox exclusives, first party is way less important. PlayStation as a platform now has free reign to profit without the high expense of needing exclusive first party titles.

red2tango35d ago

Sony has been very lazy with 1st party games compared to the PS4 era. And even the PS4 era was nothing compared to the PS3 era in terms of games.

S2Killinit34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

We have Ghost and Intergalactic coming. And then Marathon which is not exclusive to PlayStation. I think Covid and that chip shortage put a speedbump in game development because game manufacturers dont want even more risk that their game will arrive to too little hardware, but the games are starting to show up.

"With Xbox consoles collapsing and no more Xbox exclusives, first party is way less important."

Absolutely not. If that was the case then Nintendo would put Mario on Sega Genesis and Sonic on Super Nintendo. I know things are way different 30+ years later but not much has really changed in terms of exclusives and their impact on hardware. Especially early in the console life cycle.

Sony made all the money this quarter handover fist. Profits isn't a issue for them right now. I was just saying lower hardware sales and lower first party sales will hurt them or any console manufacturer of they don't have the compelling games in the long run. Just like it hurt Xbox. IF Sony keeps up not having lower first part output. Which we know they're not.

Well no big exclusives in the last two years yet PS is doing great. What are people gonna do? Buy an Xbox?

S2Killinit34d ago

I agree with you. But they have had plenty of exclusives so far. Has it been ideal? Nope. I have a feeling we are seeing a resurgence with the effects of covid and that chip shortage now behind us.

Lightning7735d ago

No it's just like 360 where they had no games yet ppl still bought it because they sold ppl on the games early on that gen the fans were locked in and invested. They were riding the good will and was dubbed the shooter, racer box. The games dried up and they never recovered from it which hurt them in the long run. Same here with PS they still make the big bucks because they had games early on and the fans locked in and will continue to lock in for a little while longer despite lacking in first party.

I agree. But the problem with xbox was that for some crazy reason MS thought game development wasnt all that important to a platform holder. They literally did not fund games with their own studios. When they lost marketshare they couldnt justify paying for exclusives with large install bases making it too expensive. That is not the scenario with PlayStation.

PS5 shipments top 77.8 million

PlayStation 5 has shipped 77.8 million units worldwide, Sony announced in its financial results for the three months ended March 31, 2025.

italiangamer36d ago

Perfectly in line to reach 100 million by March 2026.

Profchaos36d ago

Theys have to clear 22.2 million to do this.
When you average out the current number over 5 years it's unlikely.

If the console was going down in price it would be possible but they have not been able to reduce the cost in fact it's gone up so this is working against them.

gta Vi has also been pushed out of the financial year and there's likely millions of GTA v players still on ps5 that have not made the jump those players would for GTA vi

The overall poor market conditions and uncertainty doesn't fill me with confidence trade war, weak yen and the ongoing cost of living crisis. We're not talking core gamers picking up a new system were talking gamers who wait for the back 9 to enter a new generation.

I think 2027 they will but 100 not this year.

italiangamer36d ago

They will reach 100 million during 2026.

S2Killinit35d ago

It might actually get a boost considering that even the PS5 PRO is currently cheaper than the series x. This will of course be over soon as Im expecting a price hike for the PRO.

I know Sony said they are considering raising prices.. Well as of yesterday China and the US lifted their tariffs standoff. At least for 90 days until they can agree on a trade deal that would benefit both parties. So with manufacturing in China and shipping them to the US I’m hoping it will not affect the prices.

Although I kind of doubt Sony will top 100 million since GTA 6 will be releasing next year by March. Could be wrong and I’ll be glad to be.

Xbox shooting itself in the foot or more like nailing their own coffin with rising prices. Hopefully Sony will stay put.. Ghost of Yotei is releasing for $70 still so that’s a god sign hopefully.

Is this a good thing for someone with no shares in Sony stock?

italiangamer35d ago

More PS5 on the market = higher chance of getting even more games.
It's not rocket science.

gold_drake35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

very nice.
in almost 5 years too.
some big hitters are yet to come

badz14935d ago (Edited 35d ago )

come on...don't say that! that slogan "Greatness Awaits" is haunting me everytime someone says this and yeah...1st party output has not been a highlight this gen which is a huge bummer! personally, I would rate their 1st party output this gen 4/10!

gold_drake35d ago

to be honest, when i typed it out, it did sound like a slogan for that ha
