The executive of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia has today announced that the PlayStation 3 looks on track to sell 1 million consoles by the end of the year and is closing the gap with its competitor.
In other news though, he admits that the PSP Go hasn't performed very well.
O-Games announces PDC World Championship Darts: Pro Tour for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii wich will release in Q4 of 2010.
I don't see the point in a darts game for consoles. I have a proper dart board and darts which is way better than playing virtual darts on a console. Its cheaper to buy the real thing than a game, and you don't need much room to set up a dartboard. Its not like pool/snooker as you need a lot of room, and pool/snooker tables aren't cheap either, (for a good set up).
Gaming Age: "Apparently, the PlayStation 3 and PSP are now the first gaming systems to provide for HBO programming. And surprise, starting today, you can download episodes from pretty much all of their popular series (True Blood, Big Love, Entourage, Eastbound and Down, The Sopranos, Sex and the City, The Wire, Rome, Da Ali G Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Flight of the Conchords), with more coming every week."
they throw in a super discount (when you become a PSN+ member) this might make more sense....
Wish there was an option to buy complete seasons of shows at a reduced price rather than everything costing a straight amount. Even iTunes has this feature and it makes purchasing multiple videos a lot easier and is a big incentive to buy multiple episodes rather than just one or two.
That's gonna sell well with the Rich People who enjoy thier PS3. Same high class society that bought MLBTV.
That's a pretty good move for Sony. Now they need to get a few other things on there.
They need a partnership like this in the UK, maybe E4. most of the best shows we get in the UK are from america so i hope HBO will expand to the EU. I seriously doubt it though :(
The rumors continue to flood video game sites and blogs regarding the anticipated PSN+ announcement for E3. The PSN+ is the supposedly PlayStation Network premium services that will offer much more content for a monthly price. But how much more content are we talking about? And how much are you willing to pay for it? How does this match Xbox Live? But most importantly, what do gamers want to see on this service?
That would be a nice name for it, since normal PSN already gets full online services for free and the "+" would be for the extras.
It will fail if its not inserted into the mainstream, Sony has to advertise to make it a household name like LIVE....they should just call it PLUS
@below. It's more of a household name than PSN has ever been, you have a better chance of finding someone that knows what LIVE is than PSN
sony wont keep "FULL" online free for this service. I really think they will create a premium online with unrestricted online multiplayer as well as a slew of other features making it equal to and possibly exceeding live.
Sony has gone on record and said they will keep online free for all however they never said they couldnt impose limitations to that service. It would be absolutely true for them to still claim online is free for the non paid members while also limiting the player capacities in multiplayer games. For example, a free player would be able to connect to specific servers and game types that have caps as to the number of players available. This is not to disimilar to what is currently on the pc. It is no surprise they have used the pc as the model to which they created their network.
It is also no surprise sony has been studying live very closely to see how their service runs and makes $$ from the paid users (not just online multiplayer). I have gotten many people angry with me saying that sony would never charge for online play. That statement in its most simplistic view is true. However, they can create an incentive to be a paid member by limiting game sizes to free players and making them unlimited to paid members. This does not go against anything sony has ever stated and means the most logical sense.
There is $$ to be made in online. Sony knows this. The easiest way to score $$ is having a model of PSN with pay to play that is much more feature rich than the free version.
I RARELY play games online, so I wouldn't care if they did away with playing for free. I WOULD care, however, if they tried to make me start paying for LBP online or MNR online. In fact, I think having to start paying to play those games online would be a much stronger lawsuit against Sony than OtherOS was/is.
Well by full online service, I was referring to being able to play online.
Besides Sony said they wouldn't take away any online features from current non-premium-paying customers.
I think what he means is more people will probably recognize Xbox Live if you were in a conversation! PSN sounds more like a website. Alot of people refer to it as Playstation Online and don't have a clue it's called PSN. Hell,i've had to persuade people to hook up and play online because they said they don't like online gaming. I keep telling them it's free, try it out! But I don't know what their problem is.
Sony should give gamers a free month of PSN+, so they can try it out and tell others about it! Or at least a 48 hour trial like MS does.
And will always have more users, and a more organized online community.
Sony's efforts are too little, too late.
Hmmmm..... I've never had to watch an ad on Live unless I've chosen too. Am I missing something?
What will be these premium services and what will they cost is what I'm curious to see unveiled at E3.
As long as On-line Gaming is Free, everything is OK with me, IF there is a PSN Premium I'll pay for it, but on-line Gaming needs to be FREE...
agreed...sony is getting this right, and ms needs to follow this
ms already kinda do it, cause you cant go on twitter, fb or the halo waypoint (maybe other "apps" aswell, but these are the only ones i use that i notice) unless you have gold...but they should make gold for all extras while silver members have online for free
The PS3 advantage is still ther, it called free online gaming. Something crapbox don't offer. As for the PSN+ thats optional, the point is online gaming remains free.
It sounds great except....the part about $120 a year...I don't know...that seems kinda like....HIGHWAY ROBBERY!!!!!!...just saying...
BTW..expect Sony to say...ok...ok guys we will drop it to $8 because we love you guys so much....Sony...they care....
Because Sony is doing it. It's only highway robbery if Microsoft does it.
I already have Live, I'm not sure I would pay $120 a year for Sonys service on top of that.
It will obviously be a set price for yearly like $70-$80 if it was that price. Nobody pays monthly for LIVE and if they do they too are getting ripped off.
They will probably downgrade the free version of PSN to the point where you simply have to subscribe.
@darthv72 Sony has repeatedly said that the addition of pay service will not effect the current free PSN users at all. They are not changing anything about the free service just adding this PSN+ as an option for those who want it.
That makes the people who don't pay for it sound like noobs. It's kind of alienating.
If SONY makes a PSN premium service, As long as I can still play online for free i'm happy. : )
Then happy you will be;
"I can assure you that the current PSN as you know it will remain a free service" - Andrew House, president of SCEE
http://uk.playstation.com/h...
doubt it will surpass XBL, but if they keep adding to the service through out the years it will.
From what Kaz said on it, it seems that hey just want a more static revenue stream then what is probably a very sporatic PSN.
Agreed, nothing Sony has done since XBL launched has lead me to believe that they are trying to one up XBL. They are trying to provide the best service for their hardware and fan base that maximizes revenue, same as MS.
Surpass XBL?? I constantly read this but what does XBL gold have that PSN doesn't that's actually worth paying for?? I tell you.. NOTHING!! If MS made online play free to silver users you would see next to no Gold users at all. That in itself tells you Sony is on par and in fact I constantly read here on N4G that even though you pay for Gold the servers you play on cannot handle the online gaming and suffer lag.. I remember playing gears of war against Americans constant lag. I have never had lag on my PS3. To be fair I only ever had lag on gears on my 360 never on any of my other games when I had one but you pay for top servers you should get top servers...
Rotating access to PSN/PS1 games? Warranty extension?
@below:
Taking it as meaning they'll be offering a small library of titles monthly, but on a use timer once Dl-ed. 30 days after DL, it becomes unplayable.
Doubt its going to be perfect, certainly wont offer RPGs and will have something you already have, but at least Sony's trying to get you to use it, not make you for basic service.
I'm still hoping for movie rentals. Access to streaming movie channels if not a Netflix DL-only option. Give me a reason to cancel my cable.
Rotating games... Does this put a time limit on its use by the users? Or does this make it available for free a certain month which gives you ownership of the game?
I don't spend close to $120.00 a year for PSN/PS1 games, so I don't know how much this appeals to me.
It does seem kind of high. I mean Live only breaks down to $4 and some change a month. I mean Sony is offering up some cool stuff for the price but still too much for what is listed.
The Price is High indeed, but if Sony take in consideration 2 ways, Month and Year Subscription, the first one is going to be more expensive and by that making the second More Appealing to the masses
Well that is the monthly cost. I'm sure you can pay for a full year just like XBL. I think you look at 7.99 a month for XBL if you don't do the 12 month thing.
Live is $96 a year, month to month too. You don't really think Sony won't have a yearly subscription, do you?
If you are paying 96.00 US dollars a year for Live, I got some beach front property on Mars I'm willing to sell. PM if you're interested.
No one would pay monthly unless they were just checking it out or just silly with money.
$7.99(month-to-month price) x 12 months = $96.00. Is it that hard to understand? So since we're guessing at the unannounced PSN+, it wouldn't be a stretch to think the $9.99 price is month-to-month. Considering they surveyed a tiered pay structure that was around $60-80 per year US. But please, by all means, be stupid.
Except no one in their right mind pays month-by-month for an entire year of Live. You can get an entire year for around $45, even cheaper.
once again if you are paying month to month for xbl don't forget to PM me about that property on mars. It's going dirt cheap.
Agreed... that's just poor decision making.
$7.99/m for 12 months
or one payment of $49.99 for a year ($4.50/m)
As I only really care about the cloud based saves that's a bit steep. We'll have to see what else there is that would make it worth while. I don't mind paying if I'm getting my moneys worth. For example, if the extended warranty covers all my PS3s at no extra cost then that would be worth it. If I have to tack on extra for each additional one then probably not.
• 4 Free movie rentals a month from the PSN store
• Free PSN magazine subscription – Qore-
• Free Avatars (2-4 a month)
• Early BETA and Demo access
• PSN store (subscriber exclusive) sales.
i believe if this is true, then its totally worth it
It represents decent value, but it's still quite pricey, also I wouldn't call anything on that list "free" if you're forking over $120 a year to access it.
want much success? put porn in the video store. i'm not kidding. where porn goes $s follow....except for hd-dvd, thats the 1st time they were wrong.
IF they revamped regular PSN with either the release or announcement of PSN+. Better streaming for movie DL, as well as some streaming channels.
We PSN users don't like to pay for anything. Right Guys?
Right...
im liking the idea of 4 movie rentals a month with the service although my ps3 is activated for movies it won't download them cus it says i have a user already, funny thing is I called sony and they said I have no users activated to my movie service. Even more funny they said they can't reset since no one is on the service. I'm one of the people that would fork out 120 dollars if the service was reasonable. Although I do think it is too much but then again we don't even know for sure what they'll have.
could the title of this article have been any more fanboyish? btw $120 for this service? lmfao, epic fail.
except those are for premium additions.. Everything on the PlayStation network currently will still be free, which I'll be fine with to be honest.
lol, they make it sounds as if its something godly!
Come on its just premium services and nothing more.
Its not as if youll get a free arcade game every month for a year upon signing up for the service.
Why is it look out XBL? Sony has shown nothing to be able to compete with the quality XBL has been giving us for nearly 10 years now.
Just because Sony says something doesn't make it true. Plus I am pretty sure 1005 of the Sony fans said they will never pay for online service! Am I right fellas?
It only does Everything! But they cut out the "Free online" bit in the adds now.
How many hypocrites play PS3?
Wtf are you talking about?
"I can assure you that the current PSN as you know it will remain a free service" - Andrew House, president of SCEE
Current PSN let's you, play online for...wait for it, Free.
i will not be paying for this, unless it is something really great. already have netflix for movies. don't care about Qore. Beta's and Demos not worth it. Sales on games is nice but i don't buy that many PSN games. Maybe after E3 they will convince me, but right now I am very skeptical.
At the moment PSN is below Xbox Live
So any Premium service of PSN would just be making it on Par to Xbox Live Gold, so no real reason for XBL to look out now is there ;)
I love the hypocrisy, You can bet that half the fanboys who have been praising PSN as being better because it's free will immediately buy PSN Premium if it becomes available and still find imaginary reasons for it to be better than Xbox Live.
At the end of the day, PSN does not lock me out of my online play if I refuse to pay for something that I feel should be free. I can buy any game and not feel like I have to play online to get my money's worth and I can use the money I don't have to spend on peer to peer gaming to buy more games.
We have yet to see all the features PSN+ will offer, so claiming it will be on par, worse or better is foolish.
The difference is that XBL you have to pay to access online play, while the PS3 community is looking at the possibility of paying for extra features. There is no hypocrisy there.
That comment is irrelevant, b/c PSN+ could offer way more content then what xbox live would/could ever offer. Of course we have to wait and see what Sony is offering. So hold off on your hypocrisy comments until we see whats under the hood.
Because that's the only feture I care about but if it's a 50$ yearly price with cross game chat, central invite system, party chat with 4 or 8 players, new improve gamer cards, netflix built in the xmb, a system the let you see what your friends are doing, and a lot more avatars like 300 to start and 80 more avatar each month. a lot free for PSN+ user like 15 a month, also make game launch in home for every game, maybe a xmb redesign, and more information on gamer cards and put my home avatar on my gamercard. Also ps store update a week early. Also a home trophy case that never happen. Phil m. I mean xbox 360 has all this stuff with online so if I think if Sony is make 25 million a month without paying for online servers this should be no problem for them
We just have to wait and see what Sony is offering for PSN+..I personally think $120 is too high but if offers a boat load of content then I'll have to see..
it will be interesting to see what Sony has to offer in terms of justifying features.
If we're looking at $60-70, im down its basically like buying a new game anyways, it would be better if they had the 2 options like on that sheet from last year with the $39.99 & $69.99 package, hope they do that
Just give me cross game chat, I know many don't want it for whatever excuse, but I have friends on PSN and I'd like to actually talk to them, you don't need to be playing the same game at the same time to have a conversation. At least it's nice to have the choice, and having none at all is just bogus.
• Free PlayStation Protection Plan
• Cloud-based game saves
• 4 Free movie rentals a month from the PSN store
• Free PSN magazine subscription – Qore-
• Early BETA and Demo access
• PSN store (subscriber exclusive) sales.
than they better tackle down the basics and understand that...
its all about having a solid infrastructure and communication system in place.
communication is key people.
i want to see.
>voice messaging, cross voice chat, multiple ID logs ons, Universal game invite system, Universal party system, auto settings for things like audio and display, network ect sets to the highest settings possible on its own. ability to listen to music, chat and send messages while browsing the store and all that.
>trophies to psp games, and the ability to communicate between psp and ps3 users in the same way most mobile devices do with pcs via aim, msn msgr yahoo msgr ect.
>(Based on the entered zip code on your psn registration)a little weather time, date and location icon next to your friends avatar wouldn't hurt. also add the ability to let friends know what your are doing or vice versa, like im watching a bluray film or web browsing, or at the store ect. they don't have to know exactly what it is, but a brief display would more than help the cost.
>ability to accept and even send messages while watching a bluray movie, movie automatically pauses just like a game would.auto patching and installs after downloads, based of all your installs the games should be able to have a duplicate version of itself in your ps3 and patch itself while you are doing something else with your time, and all while just using a minor portion of your bandwidth, in case you are gaming or browsing or doing something else more important that requires internet usage.
.>Bundle an official PlayStation bluttoth headset along with a 10 dollar psn card and boom....also a 10 dollar hdmi cable(trust me those are real and are out there as well)..
and that's pretty much it, after this the ps3 will be the ultimate gaming platform. whatever they decide to do next, i really wouldn't care much. Just as long as they get these features implemented.
Wasnt Qore suppose to be something that you'd get extra content from and demos first from? Qore hasn't done anything worth while. Last one I bought was the issue that came with the Naruto demo a month or so early. I'd really have to see what they offer before I pay for something thats free. Thats been PSN nitch over 360. I guess everybody has to make money but they'l have to offer more than voice chat.
I just want to play games online..PSN will keep gameplay free and thats really what matters.
If true thats a fair share of content for 10 bucks a month, especially with 4 movie rentals, if true its way more value than my live for 50 a year is
Only reason is I pay for Live is to play games.
Kewl. Still won't pay for it.
I have both consoles and not going to pay for both. Live has all my friends on it. so there is only one choice for me.
I know Sony said gaming is free online with the PS3. However I see this as testing the waters to see how many people take up the premium service. If it goes well look to see charging for gaming when the PS4 is released.
Do you honestly think people will pay $120 a year for something XBL already charges $50 year for? There is nothing Sony can do to eclipse XBL. Not only that, all they did was confirm what was stated a year ago. They said that PSN is terrible because you get what you pay for. If you did get what XBL ALREADY offered, it would have to be subscription based because you have to pay for those services and upkeep. Xbox Insider, free arcade game trials, free arcade games for your game room, last.fm, and community gaming all take programmers and money to maintain. PSN doesn't offer any of those. PSN doesn't even offer PS3 titles to be downloaded to their HDD through digital distribution(Games on Demand). There's nothing that PSN offers that XBL doesn't. They still can't get players linked to the same game much less the same lobby with an invite from the friend. How is this not possible by now?
@ CaptainAmazing
XBL is not charging you to play online. They are charging you for everything they are offering. You can't pick and choose what you want. It's a service. This is not cable where you pick what service plan you want. Once you pay...it all comes with the package. Deal with it and save your 4.88 a month on a Wendy's hamburger
For only that stuff. Throw in PS2 titles, guaranteed beta access, and you've got a winner.
Oh, and make CROSS GAME CHAT FREE. That is the only thing that doesn't belong in that list, because it's a staple to the network. Things on a firmware level should all be free.
$120 a year should get you more than that.
PSN should remain free.
Xbox live is BS charging u just to play online. What happens when u have 5 games and only 1 game is online. Yea u have to play that 1 game to make ur money's worth
Sony will not offer a premium service without it offering more than Live at a cheaper price.
I think Microsoft should be worried.
This is good news for Xbox Live subscribers because Microsoft will probably being lowering your Xbox Live fees in order to stay competitive.
Xbox live is $7.99 per month and you can get it at about $40 per year. $9.99 X 12 months = $119.88 that is that is not cheaper in any way.
Raise the price higher if PSN+ manages to gain momentum at the $120 price point.
Wow..Just wow.
People are saying this is OK but blasted MS for the cost of XBL....
Go figure
Sony has officially said in numerous occasions that cross game chatting is confirmed to not be a part of any premium package. Also, did anybody read the comment? Some guy just mentions a "rumor" that he heard, and the editor/writer immediately puts it on the list.
So yeah, that's their sources, some guy in the comment section.
This is where the sony fanboys start paying a for the premium and the hypocrisy starts once again, even if it COULD cost them 2x the amount of Xbox live... I never minded paying $50 a year for xbox live. I just think it's funny to hear people run on gimp and cheer on the free service only and then change their minds when they're finally offered a better experience for a monthly fee. I don't want to be too early to judge but if I had to pay $10month/$120year I don't think I would be getting it because I personally already pay for xbox live. They should introduce two different services for PSN like $50-$120year (Which they probably will do) plans because some people may not want to pay $10 a month for some of the features to fit their budget. Not saying the console warranty isn't worth it but maybe that plan is better for Xbox 360 instead lol. I don't get on PSN enough to dish out $10 a month but if they had a cheaper plan I may think about it. That $10 monthly payment would seem like it would go towards the consoles protection plan more than anything else. So I cant see many of those wishes coming true. I have been surprised many times in life but I highly doubt it with this bet. The PS3 protection plan cost around $50 a year.
They can't be serious with that price. No way I would ever consider paying that much for what they are offering.
For this to succeed it needs to be cheaper than Xbox Live's $50 a year.
for me my 360 jus did that whole e eror thing so im done wit the 360.this was my third and they wont get another dime from me.so ill stick wit my ps3 and my girls wii.which by the way i do not play well at least the new zelda game comes out for it.peace and gaming
I have never seen this many people in denial since... hell, I don't know. All you have to do is look at the agree/ disagree counts for the comments to know who the audience is that's reading this. If PSN+ Eclipse or whatever it's called gets dropped on th epublic for $120 a year, I'm just dying to read the justifications afterward, especially considering that up until now, MS was being lambasted for offering their service for $50 a year while PSN was free.
"voice messaging, cross voice chat, multiple ID logs ons, Universal game invite system, Universal party system, auto settings for things like audio and display, network ect sets to the highest settings possible on its own. ability to listen to music, chat and send messages while browsing the store and all that. "
These are things that should be free to EVERYONE... Alot of these items where promised at launch and still havent came in yet... Sony will alienate alot of people if they give in-game music, voice messaging, cross game chat, etc to only premium paying customers... And it only causing confusion when half my list have the ability to chat cross a games or or recieve voice messages...
This is just part of staying with the "It Does Everything" theme...
Cant say "It Does Everything... Only when you pay for a premium service"
Still no psn cards in australia as a result i have never made a psn purchase dont you want my cash sony id like to get some map packs geez credit cards are evil.
will ALWAYZ be looking up to XBOX LIVE... as it has set the standard...AND If you really think MICROSOFT will fail with LIVE by leaving it the same, and not introduce a new way to charge us more.... your crazy...
"Let’s take a look at what else can make the $10 monthly fee worth wild.
• 4 Free movie rentals a month from the PSN store
• Free PSN magazine subscription – Qore-
• Free Avatars (2-4 a month)
• Early BETA and Demo access
• PSN store (subscriber exclusive) sales."
This... no. How is this worth $120 a year? Xbox LIVE does over half the stuff this service does, and it's less than half the cost. Also, renting movies on a game console is just silly, especially when you have to download them in HD.
This is a list of what WE (the gamers want) and not what they are gonna offer lol. If it included the movies I would pay the dam $9.99 but not for what they are offering (on the rumors).
9.99 a month is high for what the rumors say. I like all that stuff but $10 per month is a bit high compared to Live which can be found at about $40 per year (compared to $120 for the PSN+)
I like the protection plan if it does cover the YLOD =)
if it gives 4 movie rentals it would be worth it but it is not likely.
Every single PS3 fanboy was attacking the Xbox because they charged a fee and now every single moron is happy Sony is gonna charge us? WTH blah I hate fanboyism. I am happy with both my PS3 and my xbox (hugs his beloved consoles) as for the Wii silly fanboys Wii is for kids lol. (my kid and my nephew love it)
B!tch Please. Lemme guess another PS3 fanboy rants about PSN overtaking XBL someday......again
i will pay for psn over xbox live any day
Why
look at mag 256
just one of the games that takes a dump on the xbox love server specs
Warhawk
killzone
and other dedicated games and Home
Also if sony could get a exclusive call of duty ( will never happen) picture that with 100 players online
now that I have your attention
maybe you can answer this question
how do i close my n4g account
i cant find this info anywhere
Xbox Live should be on the lookout because PSN might get a premium service? LOL Yeah that's gonna make SO MUCH MORE people want to join PSN.
I've got a new story for you all:
