E3 is right around the corner but Sony is determine to show why they are still a force to be reckoned with in this industry.

All the hype surrounding Project Natal especially the announcement of having their own separate conference regarding the new motion technology shows that Microsoft is preparing to send a motion message to all the competition.

Sony is on board to make the first strike and this exclusive video footage of the new Kung-Fu Live videogame will surely turn heads and put Sony in a bigger position in terms of true motion.

But this game doesn't appear to be doing 3d motion recognition.

It's basically using "green screen" to isolate the character in the camera feed, printing the isolated character image onto a transparent "billboard," and placing the billboard between a couple of layers of geometry (buildings behind and railings in front).

The motion and physics processing are all 2D (simple 2D mask to pick up distance, velocity, etc...) and the environment geometry is a combination of simulated 3D (normal maps, etc...) and actual 3D geometry.

In other words, not quite what Natal is trying to do. Natal is attempting actual 3D motion capture which is why it can attempt things like 1 to 1 motion mimicking avatars (never mind if it works ... http://www.youtube.com/watc...

This is also why remote play in this particular game, as the developer stated, would be dependent on controllers. Fighting a friend remotely, using the premise of this game (it's you on screen rather than an avatar), without using a controller, typically requires actual motion capture.

Having said that, there is actually a technically feasible way to enable remote camera based fighting while still adhering to the basic premise of the game. It just requires a tiny bit of algorithmic magic but nothing the Cell can't handle.

In fact, the SPUs have built in functions specifically to handle such algorithmic magic. Amazingly, a single SPU is about as fast as a dual core 3.2Ghz Intel Xeon in performing the main component of that algorithm.

That was by no means on the same technological level as the Natal. The character was two dimensional, nothing short of what could be done using a cheap green screen. The collision detection was horrible. That type of gameplay was possible with the PS Eye several years ago. So misleading to compare skeletal tracking with infrared technology that can detect dept of field in a 3D space. Man that didn't look good... Character model zooming all over the place. Reminds me of PhotoDojo on the DSi. Although probably fun for about 15 minutes until the novelty wears off, which is what small downloadable title is all about really.

@theKiller - all this shows is placing you in the game, something that the eyetoy did back on PS2. Natal was never showing off that feature, but 3 dimensional movement and tracking which is not being shown here.

It does seem to track full body well, but it does not show if it can do it with models in 3-D. I'm sure it can, but this is a cheaper title and having a direct feed would have been the cheapest.

Really interesting as to what Playstation Eye can accomplish.

By watching the video all i saw was 2-D fighting from left to right and jumping up and down. How does this put Sony in a bigger position in terms of true motion. Correct me if im wrong but natal is suppose to be able to have 3-D motion which would be true motion.

The game might be 2-D, due to being a 2-D PSN title, but nothing says it can't be 3-D. The camera obviously can detect how close you come to it.

All Natal has shown is that you can splash paint and hit balls that come at you. This game has proven you can track body parts, capture full body, be responsive and do it at a budget price.

Not to mention it also tracks 'players coming in and out" like Natal. Sounds like the 'Natal only' tag lines are whimpering. away.

Here is a suggestions:

Show video game clips throughout your show, with your voiceover/narration during the clips. I think this will be better than just having you stand in front of the backdrop.

Grab final cut pro if you have a mac, or maybe premier or after effects if you're on PC. Should be pretty easy to integrate game clips throughout your opening an closing monologue.

For me, the MS announcements on Natal cant be ruined by anything. I want to see the games and the thing in action. I could care less about Wii HD or whatever. I want to see what Natal can do, not just games but commands etc... I think a lot of people feel the same way. I'm sorry, but this game looks retarted to me. The character flies around the screen and the game looks just soooooo cheesy. I know myself, and I would put this game down after 3 minutes. It's nothing revolutionary at all. It's a gimmicky title and a lame one at that. It's going to take a lot more than that game to get me interested in motion gaming and then the Move. I suppose it's a start though.

- Regarding HHG, I'm a NYer and I still need a decoder ring to listen to him. I love his enthusiasm, but I wish he would tone down the slang. It wouldn't hurt to speak properly to your audience.

It's a shame that he gets interviews with developers and there are still people following him to criticize how he talks. He's obviously doing something right to get these chances. If his slang were that bad of an issue, wouldn't the sophisticated developers turn him away? No matter what anyone says, there is no doubt that the Move is being taken more seriously. In a short time it went from Wii-clone to contender. It now looks like Sony isn't planning to pull any punches and is ready to go head to head with Natal and the Wii and looks like it might over shadow the Wii-mote if not the Natal.

The games media has become so much more interesting since he started making an appearance at media events.

He's got spirit. I like him, even if I do find wading through his videos kinda difficult.

Truth is ps eye wasnt well supported because it didnt fit what devs had in mind and wasnt that accurate to make games with which will be same fault with natal. Sony know this reason why they went the direction the wii took with control + motion. Now everyone will be like wait a second eyetoy did that? and MS will push Natal as hard as they can and then realize its a waste of time and probably release a wii-three.

If people really have problems with HHG then just ignore his videos and don't comment. You guys act less like gamers and more like HHG haters. You are getting an exclusive preview on a game, maybe in an unorthodox fashion, but as a gamer you should appreciate all the information provided.

There are many developers out there who actually take HHG as a great gaming journalist who just 'keeps it real'. I for one really enjoyed this video article because I found out many things about this game that I didn't know before and tbh (here comes all the disagrees) I actually find HHG's presentation more entertaining compared to other journalists.

And just for those of you with the thought; no, HHG has not paid me for this comment.
