Yeah, it's so nice of Sony to make it extremely painless to upgrade the hard drive. I was more than a little pissed when I first discovered that I'd have to pay an outrageous amount for a 120GB hard drive for my 360 when I could get a 500GB HDD for the same amount for my PS3. Granted, I believe there is a way to modify the casing that the 360 HDDs come in so you can add your own, but I'm not sure they still work after the update that disabled non-licensed media. And even if they do, it's a pain to modify from what I hear.

Do you mean get the hard drives in a store? If so, then the answer is Yes. All it needs is a 2.5" hard drive. You can get those practically anywhere.

On another note, I think it's great that you can upgrade your PS3 hard drive, but I always fill mine up before I think about upgrading. Then, I don't have anywhere to store the backup (all my external HDD drives on my comp are formatted to the wrong file system).

Cry all you want, but we PS3 owners dont worry about space because we have plenty of space, and if we run out of local space the PS3 allows us to use other and even cheaper portable memory storage devices that is all ready on the market. We can even upgrade our non propitiatory HDD.

Im thinking about swapping out my old 60gb HDD but im concerned that my saves wont carry over, or I cannot gain any new trophies working from my previous saves?

Your saves and everything WILL carry over, because you'll do a full system backup before you swap out. Make sure however that you have a separate drive with enough free space on it to do your backup before you begin.

2 games that can't be copied and carried over so far are killzone 2 and dante's inferno. if you own them, platinum those two first before you swap drives. not copying certain files suck.

I do own KZ2 but not too fussed about that save not getting carried over. More worried out my big RPG games.

When i scroll down my saves at high speed it takes 10-15seconds to reach the end of the list.. Scary when you consider the speed!!!

i have killzone and i upgraded to a 500 in december and somehow those saves managed to make their way onto my new drive....

oh and bigpappa there is a built in backup and restore utility, and if you use that you will not loose any saves as long as you restore to the same playstation, but if you just stick a flash drive in and try to copy those saves that way... well thats a no go.

Does anyone know if the attachment fans are good enough to sustain the system because it overheats in 10 seconds? My fan isn't operating and I just need enough time to transfer my data from one PS3 to the next, but I don't want to buy one if it won't work!

If it's not under warranty, then open it up. I'm not sure what the inside looks like, but if the fan is just on the housing, then opening the case and putting a box fan there should do the trick. If the fan is on a chip, though, that won't work.

Speaking of, if you're looking to clear up some space, deleting demos is a great way to do it. If you're like me, and you let them build up, it adds up to a good 5-10 GB by time you delete them all. Insane.

Honestly I always choose the optional installs if they are available. Valkyria Chronicles, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Resonance of Fate all have optional. Would be nice if all games had optional installs because then we'd hear less whining :)

But yeah just like a lot of other people, I have upgraded my harddrive. Swapped out the 160GB i had for a 320. The 160 makes for a nice small external drive.

Just because it says 720p on the back of the box doesn't mean it renders at a native resolution of 720p. Still hoping San Diego did a better job than Rockstar North though.

There's no reason it shouldn't run at 720p on PS3. GTA4 came out a (relatively) long time ago, and if they can't beef up the PS3 version of that engine by now, then they're just being lazy.

Compared to ? on my 250GB HDD on xbox360 i have half a doz games already and i can easily install this one as well. no need for drive to keep spinning where as on ps3 you have mandatory install but no full install so you'r BDdrive will need to keep spining.

So i think like GTAIV 360 this will be better version.

I think a lot of people is confusing getting a bigger Hd. I should not have to buy a bigger HD because of installs. I should buy a bigger hard drive for when I purchase movies or episodes of my favorite anime. Not Holding a massive amount of space installing a game. Most of my hard drive is drained because of installing. 5gigs is ridiculous thats like 3 HD movies. Seriously I'm just tired of installing. I hate to tell you this, but just because you've downloaded "HD rips" of movies does not make 3 of them total out at 5GBs. Actual high definition movies are more like 20-30GBs. When you download your HD rips, they aren't in true high def. They're actually closer to standard def as far as quality goes, maybe getting up to 304x720, but with horrible compression and bit rates.

As for the whining over installs, I don't really see what the problem is. Oh no, you have to wait a few minutes before you can start playing. Boohoo. Why not be smart about your time? When you get home with your game, pop it in and start the install, then go do something while you're waiting. Get some chores done so your mom won't bother you while you're playing. And so what if it takes up space that you'd rather use for useless crap? Why even bother storing videos on your PS3 in the first place? Just keep them on your PC and stream them to you PS3. It's not too difficult to do, especially if you have windows 7.

I agree man. Messed up thing is, almost every Capcom game I own, other than Street Fighter 4, has at least a 5 gig install. Add in Bioshock 1 and 2, MGS4, GTA 4, well, I'm not going to name them all, but those games alone take up a crazy amount of space that could be put to better use.

I have a 500 gig hard drive, but not everyone does. If a game this massive only takes up 600MB, I think some of these companies need to get a few tips from Rockstar.

How is 600MB count as a install? I think the person just wrote this out of being dumb, most games take about that much or lower, heck my Elder Scrolls file takes 1MB and Fallout 3 GOTY file is 12MB.

Whilst I think Blu Ray is a great technology I don't think it'll have a long run. In my opinion everything will become digital in the future. As long as broadband speeds and download services continue to improve then people will slowly begin to migrate towards downloading their media. Look at iTunes or Steam for example.

Consoles now have operating systems with internet browsers and media players etc. Even hardware upgrades are now part of owning a console with hard drives. It will only be a matter of time before they have performance upgrades as well. Anyone remember the N64 expansion pack!?

When I got my PS3 at launch, I, like many others, thought that 60GB was enough for a wee while. I promptly upgraded to a 250GB (which isn't much by today's standards but was massive in a console then).

Now I daren't upgrade as I have a new game ++ demon's souls save!

Solution? I bought a 1TB external drive for all my media. Now I have over 300GB of shows (and counting) that I can stream around the house and in fact anywhere with a net connection using my PSP.

How much did I pay for a 250GB internal AND a 1TB external combined? £120 (rounded UP)
