A reader calling himself as Alan Wake fan emailed us these live in-game images of Alan Wake, it seems like he must be a reviewer or someone in the know who has already got a copy of the game

Res does matter for the Xbox, it is serious business. But it does not matter for the PS3 even though most first party PS3 games are never in full 1080p, let alone upscaled to 1080p from 720p. The game is a mix of resolutions. Why does it matter? Alan Wake is the most visually impressive game to ever grace a console. Looks desperate when you deny this. The resolution issue is just a pathetic excuse to attack the game giving fanboys a reason not to admit the game looks impressive.

Remember when GTAIV came out and no one cared that the PS3 version was sub-HD while the 360 version was 720 p? Each version looked great and some (abeit the majority of N4G) argued the PS3 version was superior.

Resolution doesn't matter so long as the game runs and looks good. I doubt anyones going to put a magnifying glass up to their tv after they buy/rent this game.

That little clip justifies what I've been saying all along.

By choosing (it was definitely a choice) 540P they were able to implement what appears to be really good real-time environment lighting and shadows.

This requires a lot more shader work than standard texture/normal map oriented 360 games like Gears of War 1 & 2.

At 540P, the GPU gives them 77% more shader cycles per pixel. That's almost double!

Again, for a sim, this would have been a bad choice, but for a somewhat surreal game like this, that's a huge boost!

Hopefully the extra horsepower available per pixel will be enough to implement some high quality motion blur and depth of field.

well these are off-screen pics, so of course you can't really see the details but still says alot that even with these off-screen captures you still get the sense of just how good the game looks. Now while I agree judging from all the vids that that I've seen its the best looking game on a console, but I don't think anyone who disagree's with that statement is in denial. Actually I think the whole graphics arguement is being blown out of porportion, again art, environment, and so many other asthetics are far more important than rez alone, not to say that rez isn't important but any dev will tell you that better use of the hardware= "tricks" can produce better looking games than higher rez games that lack a sense of scale/artistic design. I just can't wait until we move on and actually start getting details about the game itself; beyond the graphics.

Kind of reminds me of Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube.. Good looking despite looking low resolution. I wouldn't say it is among the best though like the RE4 game, too early to say based on those pics.

The only thing where resolution matters is for PC gaming, that is where you see a MAJOR difference is high and low resolutions. Im pretty sure none of these console games are running 800x600 resolution, im pretty sure its 1020+ which is still good resolution. maxed? of course not, the best? no, playable and looks damn good still? Of course resolution matters. A game like this running in low res tells me the 360 is technically inferior. Alan wake was supposed to showcase the 360 but no it has to seriously downgrade its resolution to compete with the PS3's.

Res ranks pretty low on my list of things to care about. Story, gameplay and presentation are the holy trinity. SCC might not be the most beautiful game in the world, but it plays so smooth I don't care how high the polygon count is. Conversely, GOW3 made my eyes bleed but the gameplay made my brain turn to mush.

Resolution is one of the last bastions of fanboys looking to pick a fight. This is like the grade school playground all over again.

Resolution is absolutely the last thing I care about in terms of a game's graphics. It makes the least impact of any graphical element.

MGS4 was well below 720p and it looked great. It really depends on the the techniques they use when upconverting the resolution to the final output.

So far everything I have seen makes me think the game will look gorgeous and that is what really matters: the final result. I don't care which techniques are used or how they get there; if the game looks good, it looks good, period.

I think the game looks great in as much as it looks atmospheric and interesting with good colour and lighting, I would love to play this game but am ps3 only owner and plan to stay that way. If this comes to pc in the future i will be very interested. This game looks like what i was hoping for from heavy rain , except with proper controls and actual game play. comparing screen resolutions under a microscope is so last year...that's my honest opinion.

To be honest, Resident Evil 5 looks better unfortunately.

I understand some of the technique to make Alan Wake APPEAR better because the lighting, fog, and aliasing work together to hide details in the environment and that actually adds to the atmosphere of the thriller genre but as a graphical mark it actually lowers it.

In fact when you see the excess fog in the game the depth perception becomes only about a yard before everything beyond becomes totally unrecognizable and in scenes with the flash light the light actually inhibits the detail areas not lit.

I understand that most of this is part of the design of the game and adds to the overall experience but graphical fidelity and detail are overshadowed by many other 360 games and multiplats.

I agree with the fact it is on par with best atmosphere in a game but there are more than enough games that are also on par with that title other than Alan Wake.

You can play Half-Life 2 on a PC at 1080p and 60fps and Crysis at 30fps and 720p. But will half Life 2 look better?

The most important thing is how the game will look when you pop the disk in your console. As long as the game plays well, performs well, has a great story and the graphics make you drool, then that should be all that matters. From what i can see, ALAn Wake could well tick all those boxes.

Its an excellent example that Natsu made. I have seen both Star Ocean 4 and White Knight chronicles on the PS3 and Star Ocean looked better even with sub-HD resolution compared to White Knights 1080p res. In the end. both of them are average in the looks department.

I owned Tales of vesperia on Xbox360.
Disgea3 offers PS2 sprites and most reviews said so same for Cross Edge And I owned the game when I had a PS3 before I sold it. I played the game just this weekend at my friend's house when we had that SFIV PS3 tournement I spoke about a few days ago.
Last Rebelion looks like a PS2 game . We've all seen the videos. you go ahead and watch some videos.
I've played VC and Loved the game.

Oh, I see what you mean. Well to be fair VC graphics are hard to compare because they are cellshaded, with a very unique art-style.

Now DF released a very recent analysis comparing both SO4 versions. They said the xbox version is a tad better due to a higher resolution (Ps3 looked blurry), but neither were exactly good looking.

You phrased it right. They made a choice. I guess the trade off was: 720 with 2xAA or none at all + everything else on top, or 540p + 4xMSAA + everything else on top. I agree this is the best choice Remedy could have come with. The soft look definitely adds to the atmosphere.

Disagreeing with me and agreeing with the HITMAN's excuse is pointless. If you can't see this game is impressive even in these screens you're just in denial. 360 owners have seen the trailer on XBL and know it's the most impressive. It doesn't matter what N4G members say. You will know the truth after either buying the 360 and Alan Wake or from the reviewers. Watching Alan Wake game play on XBL with my 46" Sammy with auto motion Blur and Judder reduction cranked all the way up is the most tear jerking experience ever.

Alan Wake is easily one of the best looking games of this generation...but i totally agree that these screens are pointless...

as far as the resolution stuff...I have never really cared about that for any title...its true MS mostly gets a free pass from the press in this area, as the 360 originally was never marketed as some HD beast (unlike how Sony never shut up about it at the PS3's release)...

Graphically the game looks good, but not the best by any stretch. But the game itself seemed lame to me. I watched the first 20 minutes and the dialog, narration and voice acting were shockingly bad. If this were just some shoot-em-up game then that would be ok, in fact that would be par for the course. But this game was purported to be very story driven, and for a game such as that, these aspects need to be better.

but it doesn't hold a candle to GOW3 or Uncharted 2 or Killzone 2 All of those games are in 720p. TWICE resolution and with AA. GOW3 even have best AA know to date on consoles.

Might have something to do with the fact that every time a 360 exclusive gets announced every forum on the internet is filled with "Game X is going to be the best looking console game evar".

Then Microsoft starts the talk about how they have the best looking game coming out.

Then reviewers give the game 9.(+1 on whatever they gave the latest PS3 exclusive) all the while praising the fantastic graphics.

Then release date comes around and the PS3 preferers shrug at what passes for "top-notch graphics" on the 360.

Oh look, yet another Alan Wake resolution flamewar! It's funny how the fact that the game looks great in all of the screencaps we've seen is somehow irrelevant because the images are 540p in the framebuffer. Totally every image ever seen of this game must be bullshots.

I wish I had rigs like some of the folks here seem to have that display their 360 games straight from the framebuffer without using the awesomeness that is the ANA upscaler chip. Of course those rigs make all of their 360 games look horrible and low-res while my retail 360 makes mine look just fine. I respect the fact that you like all games as well, anzagi. I do, too. To be perfectly honest it baffles me to no end when I see comments like yours criticizing people who are excited for a game. Many of these people are legitimately excited about Alan Wake. I just find it silly that there are people who just cannot accept that visually it may come close to a game like Uncharted in terms of quality, so they start this silly "but it's sub-HD" or whatever other argument they can find in their quest to completely ignore reality.

I would think that someone who likes all games could see what Alan Wake has to offer and tolerate other people who are excited for it. But that's just what I think.

Bu bu bu it's only 540p! Looks impressive indeed. I think some people fail to realize the Xbox 360 has an internal scaler. The PS3 HAS to be in 480i/p, 720p and 1080i/p. The Xbox 360 can take ANY resolution and upscale it without issues.

I love this. All of a sudden the people who would harp on endlessly at the PS3 for having a slightly inferior port cant tell the difference between 720P and 546P.

Does Alan Wake look good? Yes.

Is it going to be on the same level as the top teir PS3 games? No way in hell.

No 360 game looks as good as UC1/UC2/GoW3/KZ2/MGS4. Not one of those games came from a multiplat developer so I dont know how they could tell us anything since they dont even strive for the best.

Dude. I have a 360. Still smells new. I have Forza 3 (remember that game, was meant to look better than GT5:P) Gears of War II, Pure, Lego Batman, Left 4 Dead and ODST and the SC: Conviction Demo.

Forza 3 is no where near the level of GT5:P. That is not an opinion, that is a cold hard fact.

Gears of War 2 Does not look as good as Killzone 2. Another FACT. Sure one is a TPS, the other a FPS, but the similar art styles make for a good comparison. Hell compare it to Uncharted 1 (woops... the internet already did that) and you'll find it still lacking.

ODST is lacking when compared to KZ2. Its kinda Haze-level.

The conviction demo... Well I would compare that to UC2. Third person, recent release, small emphasis on stealth. UC2 is so far ahead of anything done in splinter cell it's a joke. Just a theory, but would you want to release a game on the PS3 when games released 6 months earlier look 5 years better?

UCI/UC2 are visually impressive ill give you that.. but, KZ2 & MGS4??? Your making me laugh! In my opinion, Halo Reach looks every bit as good as KZ2.. even better & it's only in Beta atm!

KZ2 is just all "smoke & mirrors" because of hardware limitations. MGS4 is just a joke! There are at least a hand full of visually impressive multi-plat games out now that have past that easily in my opinion. I played the GOW3 demo & really didn't see anything that I haven't seen anyware else before.

Alan Wake's lighting engine is cool and all with nice POST processing effects, but it doesn't have nearly as much detail, polycount, high res textures and scale as games like Gow3, KZ2 and Uncharted, not to mention the animation, character models are so outdated in comparison to the big boys. Finally, the game is rendering at a measly 540p is insulting to be even mentioned in the same sentence for graphical king. I really hope the die hard 360 fans would get objective and stop fabricating a game into what it's not.

Any gamer would be a fool to pass up an opportunity to play a game just because of some nonsense about resolution or what console the game is on. If you are a gamer just play the game. From what I've seen across the internet, only fanboys compare KZ2 to a visual giant like Crysis & while making themselves look foolish in the process.

Most "normal" people all know that MGS4 is NO graphical power house by any means!

Allan wake looks like a great visual contender to go up against UC2, & quickly off the top of my head.. AC2, hell.. even AC1 looked better than MGS4 in my opinion.

BTW.. My PSN ID is fine the way it is! I consider myself to be a "True Elite Gamer" because I enjoy all games on every platform! With all this "my console is better" childish BS.. I just thought it was fitting at the time.

It seems due to Xbox's lack of producing HD games, we need to look at the console wars in terms of the sport boxing.

540p (subHD) - Cruiser Weight
720/1080p(HD) - Heavy Weight

I think I would have no problem giving Alan Wake the Cruiser Weight championship by the screenshots I have seen so far, maybe they were bullshots we just have to wait and see from the reviewers.

On the Heavy Weight side, its a toss up for me, UC2/KZ2/GOW3.
(If Reach is 720p native, then I have no problem in comparing that with UC2/../.. for the championship)

It is just my opinion. The same can be said about UC1/UC2/KZ2/MGS4 graphics-----> OPINION. Remember when GT4 came out and most of you think PS3 looks better (although it was in sub HD while x360 was 720p?). The graphic is just as good as you believe it to be, nothing more, nothing less.

Alan wake will have the most advanced lighting effects seen in a game this console generation to date period. Nothing on the Playstation comes close to it on that front. I love UC2 it's why I own a ps3 but hands down it's lighting is poor at times.
