My god...does the res matter? I remember an article before people were fighting over all the little technical nuances. If the game looks good, it looks good. End of story.

Godmars2905116d ago

Unfortunately, it might matter enough that someone from Remedy lied about it. Went out and responded to low rez picks when all he had to do was wait till the game is out. That's all they need to shut anyone up.

hamoor5116d ago

the sad thing is a lot of people cant tell the difference between 720p game and sub hd game
R&C was sub hd but it was good looking game
You want real HD??
The pc can do every game in 1080p and beyond that while the consoles struggling in 720p

Perkel5116d ago

it will good only on small TV. On Big tv 40"+ it will look all blury. 547p it's almost PAL signal. Do SD look good on 40"+ screen ? :> Ask yourself.

hamoor5116d ago

no one complained when cod is sub hd
No one complained when bioshick 2 have the same graphics as the first one
It just a fanboy thing, res really didn't matter for multi games but for exclusive games it does matter for fueling the stupid console war

hamoor5116d ago

it will be upscaled to 720p/1080p

vhero5116d ago

Res doesnt really matter as long as it looks good but these pics prove absolutely nothing.. Pics of it on somebodys tv?? no thanks..

Inside_out5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

But, but, it's foggy...how come it's dark...that flashlight doesn't look real...I lived in Alaska, it doesn't look like that...and my all time favorite...my custom pixel counter 2000 says it's not a good game...LMFAO...Alan Amazing...couple more wks to go....

Montrealien5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

Res does matter for the Xbox, it is serious business. But it does not matter for the PS3 even though most first party PS3 games are never in full 1080p, let alone upscaled to 1080p from 720p. But when the xbox has 576p upscaled to 1080p stop the press! Xbox sucks! Lets all point and laugh at the 360 and bubble up our comrades!

btw, the dissagrees I will get for simply stating this hypocracy proves my point.

Harry_Manback5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

I never knew low res equals a bad game /

I know whenever I'm interested in a game, I look into the gameplay, storyline, etc before looking at the resolution.

Alan is looking to be a pretty good game imo.

Anon19745116d ago

Alan Wake looks fantastic and I can't wait to play this game. The footage I've seen so far has left the definite impression that this will soon be close to the top of my list of favorite Xbox 360 games.

IdleLeeSiuLung5116d ago

Art direction has a much bigger impact on visuals than resolution. I have seen some bad looking high resolution games....

So take your pic!

peeps5116d ago

very true, if i'm sitting and playing a good looking game it's not gonna change my mind about how it looks if someone comes along and says 'btw that's sub hd'.

if the game looks good to the human eye that's all that matters lol it doesn't matter how it achieves it, providing it looks good.

MNicholas5116d ago

Why do you think they made the HUD information 720P?

They didn't want the HUD info to be blurry.

Montrealien5116d ago

I think resolution is important, just not news worthy. Call me when Halo Reach is in 480i, then I will hop on the, OMG! WTF!?! band wagon. Till then I am happy that both my 360 and PS3 make great games that look amazing.

beardtm5116d ago

Best looking console game ever. Anyone who says othewise is in denial.

bjornbear5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

I have a PS3 and love it as a console.

this argument is stupid, and it doesn't make or break a game

if AW is good and looks beautiful, lay off and focus on the truly serious situations in gaming atm, like DRM and MS trying to make you pay for demo's...

@ above

well then, if having a different opinion to you is being in denial, then I and 99% of the world is in denial...happy now?

the game looks great, but so far from what i've seen it doesn't match U2 or GOWIII =/ IMO

Elven65116d ago

Godmars290: Lied about what? Only the Community Manager came out and said 720p which isn't technically false, even here on N4G people were all "he never said native".

Before that, you can correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Remedy said anything about the resolution.

trancefreak5116d ago

those pictures look gourgeous

Hallmark Moment5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

The game is a mix of resolutions. Why does it matter? Alan Wake is the most visually impressive game to ever grace a console. Looks desperate when you deny this. The resolution issue is just a pathetic excuse to attack the game giving fanboys a reason not to admit the game looks impressive.

AnttiApina5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

I think this actually looks pretty good: http://i42.tinypic.com/o09e...

BloodyNapkin5116d ago

Wow that's new's to me. can you post me some links of where MS is going to try to make people pay for demo's? Cause what i have seen so far it was publishers that was going to do that and it was going to be on all console platforms. But maybe i have been misinformed, would you care to enlighten me?

dragunrising5116d ago

Remember when GTAIV came out and no one cared that the PS3 version was sub-HD while the 360 version was 720 p? Each version looked great and some (abeit the majority of N4G) argued the PS3 version was superior.

Resolution doesn't matter so long as the game runs and looks good. I doubt anyones going to put a magnifying glass up to their tv after they buy/rent this game.

The pics look great.

MNicholas5116d ago

That little clip justifies what I've been saying all along.

By choosing (it was definitely a choice) 540P they were able to implement what appears to be really good real-time environment lighting and shadows.

This requires a lot more shader work than standard texture/normal map oriented 360 games like Gears of War 1 & 2.

At 540P, the GPU gives them 77% more shader cycles per pixel. That's almost double!

Again, for a sim, this would have been a bad choice, but for a somewhat surreal game like this, that's a huge boost!

Hopefully the extra horsepower available per pixel will be enough to implement some high quality motion blur and depth of field.

kancerkid5116d ago

@ ps3 fanboys

Doesn't look like the game only takes place during the night.
hmmm.
What do you have to say for yourselves now?
oh yea, i know, [insert something stupid]

Dance5116d ago

MGS4. Ratchet and clank. GTA4. Yakuza were all sub hd but nobody complained about them unless its a xbox exclusive

4Sh0w5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

well these are off-screen pics, so of course you can't really see the details but still says alot that even with these off-screen captures you still get the sense of just how good the game looks. Now while I agree judging from all the vids that that I've seen its the best looking game on a console, but I don't think anyone who disagree's with that statement is in denial. Actually I think the whole graphics arguement is being blown out of porportion, again art, environment, and so many other asthetics are far more important than rez alone, not to say that rez isn't important but any dev will tell you that better use of the hardware= "tricks" can produce better looking games than higher rez games that lack a sense of scale/artistic design. I just can't wait until we move on and actually start getting details about the game itself; beyond the graphics.

Fan Tastic5116d ago

Kind of reminds me of Resident Evil 4 on the Gamecube.. Good looking despite looking low resolution. I wouldn't say it is among the best though like the RE4 game, too early to say based on those pics.

Very promising looking title. It is about time the 360 has something to make me want one again.

IaMs125116d ago

The only thing where resolution matters is for PC gaming, that is where you see a MAJOR difference is high and low resolutions. Im pretty sure none of these console games are running 800x600 resolution, im pretty sure its 1020+ which is still good resolution. maxed? of course not, the best? no, playable and looks damn good still? Yes.

Microsoft Xbox 3605116d ago

Of course resolution matters. A game like this running in low res tells me the 360 is technically inferior. Alan wake was supposed to showcase the 360 but no it has to seriously downgrade its resolution to compete with the PS3's.

IcarusOne5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

Res ranks pretty low on my list of things to care about. Story, gameplay and presentation are the holy trinity. SCC might not be the most beautiful game in the world, but it plays so smooth I don't care how high the polygon count is. Conversely, GOW3 made my eyes bleed but the gameplay made my brain turn to mush.

Resolution is one of the last bastions of fanboys looking to pick a fight. This is like the grade school playground all over again.

Traveler5116d ago

Resolution is absolutely the last thing I care about in terms of a game's graphics. It makes the least impact of any graphical element.

MGS4 was well below 720p and it looked great. It really depends on the the techniques they use when upconverting the resolution to the final output.

So far everything I have seen makes me think the game will look gorgeous and that is what really matters: the final result. I don't care which techniques are used or how they get there; if the game looks good, it looks good, period.

Lykon5116d ago

I think the game looks great in as much as it looks atmospheric and interesting with good colour and lighting, I would love to play this game but am ps3 only owner and plan to stay that way. If this comes to pc in the future i will be very interested. This game looks like what i was hoping for from heavy rain , except with proper controls and actual game play. comparing screen resolutions under a microscope is so last year...that's my honest opinion.

likedamaster5116d ago

"my custom pixel counter 2000 says it's not a good game"

That's classic stuff right there. LOL +bubbles

sid4gamerfreak5116d ago

alan wake looks good.

oh and btw stop fighting about resolutions, u console ppl should be the last ones fighting about that considering that consoles cant even do full hd. (LOL)

fear885116d ago

To be honest, Resident Evil 5 looks better unfortunately.

I understand some of the technique to make Alan Wake APPEAR better because the lighting, fog, and aliasing work together to hide details in the environment and that actually adds to the atmosphere of the thriller genre but as a graphical mark it actually lowers it.

In fact when you see the excess fog in the game the depth perception becomes only about a yard before everything beyond becomes totally unrecognizable and in scenes with the flash light the light actually inhibits the detail areas not lit.

I understand that most of this is part of the design of the game and adds to the overall experience but graphical fidelity and detail are overshadowed by many other 360 games and multiplats.

I agree with the fact it is on par with best atmosphere in a game but there are more than enough games that are also on par with that title other than Alan Wake.

xXRight3yeXx5115d ago

I'm buying this game for sure. ALAN WAKE FTW!

Anyway, it doesn't looks as good as Uncharted 2, Gow3 like you 360 fanboys said.

Right now in my collection is, Halo 3 ODST, Bioshock 2, L4D2, and CODMW2 and i just bought my 360 4 days ago!

Happy gaming!

DaTruth5115d ago (Edited 5115d ago )

The entire debate had nothing to do with anti-Alan Wake. They are "anti-fanboys claiming Alan Wake to be the second graphical coming and looks better than Uncharted 2", in every PS3 thread!

Who cares about how good the game is. It was a total all you can eat crowfest!

What, is nobody suppose to say anything after all the invaded Uncharted 2, Killzone 2 and GOW3 threads?

haters ps3 fanboys are going to hate no matter what remedy does or doesn't do with alan wake.

alan wake looks to be one of the most original games to come out in years. the game literally screams of best graphics to date with the way they aim to present it... lets just hope the story is as good as the approach.

Congratulations Remedy alan wake is new king of graphics.

deal with it.

You Noob5116d ago

AHAHHAHA Are you serious?? Hope no.

Alan Fake Graphics is 'good', nothing more... (576p say hi!)

@alan wake looks to be one of the most original games to come out in years

Ok... you're stupid.

Alan Fake is a copy of Alone in The Dark.

Natsu X FairyTail5116d ago

Same way Uncharted is a Tomb raider ripoff with a little touch of Indiana Jones?

get real dude.

5116d ago
You Noob5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

Who said Uncharted is original?
Shut the f**k up

DigitalRaptor5116d ago

Your post stinks of desperation and wishful thinking. Yes, the game looks damn good, but it really doesn't look as good as Uncharted 2. I'd say it's somewhere between Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2 graphics-wise.

Maybe if the game had been put out for PC at a much higher resolution, but the 360 version mainly runs in sub-HD resolution.

Remedy are great developers, but Alan Wake isn't all that original. Maybe in comparison to most games on the 360 it might seem original, but in the grand scheme of things, not really.

TheXgamerLive5116d ago

it is, face it wannabe's, ya see sony has god of war III and it does look great, no doubt, but it doesn't have realistic graphics, it's a sci fi fantasy world so while it's great it's no Alan Wake. AW has true to life graphics and game play and does it with the best realism ever.
Oh, and don't go trying to mention heavy rain, it's not a video game so much as a point and click movie. 90% of it can be watched with your controller resting in your lap.

rezzah5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

Compare your precious Alan Wake to Crysis 2 you dumbass, wipe the shyt out your eyes and see the truth.

I enjoy what I see in those pic, however I also see soemthing I don't like. Every plant is the exact same, and it looked like they didn't even bother to change the angles around. Instead its like they just dropped them there uncaring at how many face the same direction (this makes it easier to notice it).

evilmonkey5015116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

"Congratulations Remedy alan wake is new king of graphics, on the xbox360."

fixed.

I didn't want you to get in trouble with
God of War3
Uncharted 1 and 2
Killzone
Heavy rain

WetN00dle695116d ago

rezzah

Yeah you too should compare, God of War 3, Uncharted 1-2 and Flamerzone 2 to Crysis 2 and you will see that Crysis 2 takes a dump on all of those games combined!

rezzah5116d ago

Notice I didnt compare it to any of those games you mentioned. Relax don't be such a bot.

Also those games are way more compareble than Aln Wake, based on the pictures and videos I have seen. Don't talk about the dark scenes, I understand the allusion behind it.

Natsu X FairyTail5116d ago

This game looks really good no matter what the resolution is.

green5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

You can play Half-Life 2 on a PC at 1080p and 60fps and Crysis at 30fps and 720p. But will half Life 2 look better?

The most important thing is how the game will look when you pop the disk in your console. As long as the game plays well, performs well, has a great story and the graphics make you drool, then that should be all that matters. From what i can see, ALAn Wake could well tick all those boxes.

Natsu X FairyTail5116d ago

Exactly. White Knight Chronicles for example runs at 1080p but Star Ocean who runs at 900x510 looks Miles better.

vhero5116d ago

I disagree SO4 is a terrible looking game lol. I agree with the point you are trying to make but bad example..

green5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

Its an excellent example that Natsu made. I have seen both Star Ocean 4 and White Knight chronicles on the PS3 and Star Ocean looked better even with sub-HD resolution compared to White Knights 1080p res. In the end. both of them are average in the looks department.

Natsu X FairyTail5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

SOIV has one of the best Graphics when it comes to Gameplay.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

it'S better than most next gen JRPGS out right now.

Better than Disgea3 , Last rebelion , Atelier , Valkyrai Chronicles , Tales of Vesperia

EDIT @ raztad : what i meant to say is that the Gameplay parts of SOIV offers Great Visuals.

I owned Tales of vesperia on Xbox360.
Disgea3 offers PS2 sprites and most reviews said so same for Cross Edge And I owned the game when I had a PS3 before I sold it. I played the game just this weekend at my friend's house when we had that SFIV PS3 tournement I spoke about a few days ago.
Last Rebelion looks like a PS2 game . We've all seen the videos. you go ahead and watch some videos.
I've played VC and Loved the game.

raztad5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

"SOIV has one of the best Graphics when it comes to Gameplay."

Your comment is mindboggling.

BTW, pretty sure you havent played most of the games you listed, especially VC.

@natsu

Oh, I see what you mean. Well to be fair VC graphics are hard to compare because they are cellshaded, with a very unique art-style.

Now DF released a very recent analysis comparing both SO4 versions. They said the xbox version is a tad better due to a higher resolution (Ps3 looked blurry), but neither were exactly good looking.

@bellow

I'm not calling him liar. As many people does he might be talking out of reviews/videos impressions, which sometimes can be misleading, especially if you want to compare with other games.

The Maxx5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

So you are going to call Natsu a liar based on your "feeling"?

Maybe he has played all those games. Maybe he enjoys JRPG's. Maybe he is the person to listen too because he played all those games.

Maybe you are upset that someone is using practical sense and you don't like it because you are an anti-MS fanboy like your history of comments indicate.

raztad5116d ago (Edited 5116d ago )

@The MAxx

Why would I be upset? LOL. It's true I'm not a MS loyalist like you but I dont get mad for nothing.

@MNicholas

"Alan Wake made the right choice by choosing 540P with 4xMSAA. A somewhat surreal game like Alan Wake can get away with, or even benefit from, a lower resolution because the "softer" image actually ads to the atmosphere."

You phrased it right. They made a choice. I guess the trade off was: 720 with 2xAA or none at all + everything else on top, or 540p + 4xMSAA + everything else on top. I agree this is the best choice Remedy could have come with. The soft look definitely adds to the atmosphere.

MNicholas5116d ago

1) I disagree that (based on what we've seen) that this a "very good looking" game.

2) You examples of Star Ocean and White Knight Chronicles are poor choices. However, it is true that resolution vs shader quality is the big trade-off that every developer has to make. Increase resolution and you have to drop shader quality to maintain the frame-rate.

Alan Wake made the right choice by choosing 540P with 4xMSAA. A somewhat surreal game like Alan Wake can get away with, or even benefit from, a lower resolution because the "softer" image actually ads to the atmosphere.

On the other hand, games attempting for hyer-realism, such as simulators, ought to have atleast 720P.

xXRight3yeXx5115d ago

It's so easy to spot a 360 troll. Just look at their bubbles!

When i see someone with less than 5 bubbles, then he's a 360 fanboy and so, i don't want to read his delusional comments. When i see a user with 5 bubbles, then it's a new account for a 360 fanboy who just got bubble raped. When i see a user with 6 bubbles or more, then he's a PS3 fanboy. When i see less than that for a PS3 fanboy, then he's an extreme fanboy. When i see 9-10 bubbles, he's a neutral. Oh the irony.

DaTruth5115d ago (Edited 5115d ago )

I use to have 9 bubbles, but I'm a Jesus fanboy. When you have more than five and are neutral on consoles, but got drawn into the inevitable religion vs. videogames articles where nerds try to classify all People of religion everywhere as the same as a fringe group and go on a religious bashfest.

All right, I can't call myself neutral because I am anti-360 fanboys invading PS3 threads!

I just bought two of the MonsterVerse Godzilla movies on 4K - both had digital copies expiring in 2023. Both were actually expired.

I'd be surprised but it's WB, of course they'd actually expire them

Knightofelemia10d ago

Usually most of those redemption card have an expiry date on them. If they expired all buyer did was buy recycled paper. And some of those codes are country locked to certain countries. I buy a card from the States I can't use it in Canada.

Dumb and silly story. She wasted her money for no reason.

Is it really that hard to go to Steam or GOG. She spent $240, when its currently 70% off on GOG, and only costs $4.49.

Gee, I wonder, should I spend $240 on eBay, or $4.49 on GOG? 🙄

Rynxie9d ago

Most likely she wanted to resell a few or most of them. However, it was a too good to be true situation.

So in short she paid $240.00 assuming usd for a bunch on unactivated game codes.

I still don't understand why I guess cause there's not a physical version and she wanted something for a collection or art project.

No, most likely to resell. However, she ended up getting screwed.

Remedy has Alan Wake merch on sale, including a pretty blue thermos. Nevertheless, it has resulted in a lot of upset, illustrating just how much the thermos means to Alan Wake fans.
