The Shin Megami Tensei series sometimes mixes its collectible-monster RPG combat with other genres, and Strange Journey continues that trend by throwing in old-style dungeon crawling similar to that of Wizardry. The Dark Spire (another Atlus title on the DS) is a fine comparison too, though Strange Journey is decidedly less brutal. The end result has some rough edges, but is mostly an enjoyable game that should keep you busy for quite a while.

Persona is just a more accessible franchise to get into than the mainline SMT in terms of difficulty, premise, and tonality.
Persona was meant to have a more wider appeal and was designed to feel more familiar and relateable to the audience as opposed to the more fantastical and philosophical aspects of the mainline series.
