GPU Cooling Mod Cures RROD

Apparently it was a bad design on microsofts part, the Optical DVD drive is placed too closely to the GPU.

The DVD drive needs to be removed, placed externally. A fan needs to be placed on the Heat sink over the GPU this cures the problem.

They'll say it is a Net360, digital download only like the PSPgo, but it really is a way to "recoup" on all those RROD'd 360s they have in a warehouse in Jersey.

The best solution was for Microsoft to have never released the 360 so early at the expense of its consumers. That way they could have product tested the console before they released it.

Yeah I know many people may argue that paid off, because they wanted to beat Sony to the market. However that was at the expense to the end user. I know what I would rather at least and that would have been for Microsoft to delay the release of the 360 for at least 6 months perhaps longer.

Would have not been an issue if they used one of those small laptop type dvd drives. Then the gpu would have a normal heat sink and could have probably fit another fan in there.

True lol. I recall the Riva TNT 2 from Nvidia was about the time Gpus started coming out with fans that was back in 1999.

Actually if you open your 360 and do whatever mods but make sure NOT to turn it on at any point with anything disconnected you would be okay. So if you do the whole mod and put everything back together with the drive outside you would/should be okay.

If my 360 dies once more it would be #6 and I would HAVE to do something as drastic as this as I have done at least 5 different mods over the course of it's failures.

No, you misunderstand. It would be RROD #6, NOT Xbox 360 repurchase #6 (I am not a fool like many you read about here on N4G). I have fixed my 360 every time because I am one of the REALLY unlucky ones who had a launch 360 that only had a 90 day warranty and it failed just after that when RROD wasn't very well known and MS didn't cover it by the warranty back then.

So I had to wait until a fix came out and open it up myself but then later MS extended it to 1 year warranty...which still didn't help me because a) it was again AFTER my 1 year anniversary & b) because I had already opened it to fix it so I violated my terms as it was. But wait there's more ~ because to top it all off, when they extended it to 3 years I still got screwed because of my prior explanations.

And I absolutely REFUSE to buy another OR spend a single dime on ANYTHING like LIVE!, Accessories, bigger HDD, WiFi, HD-DVD (back then), memory cards and etc. People love to play down what/how MS has done to screw over their "customers" all for them to be able to say they "beat" Sony to market and have supposedly "more" consoles sold than the PS3...which is true I agree...but not exactly TRUTHFUL in the essence of WORKING & USABLE installed base due to RROD re-purchases OR bannings.

That tech must first evolve on the PC before it comes down to consoles. Currently the Tech is just not ready.

There are many limitations which currently hold this tech back. I see Memory Bandwidth as being one of them.

Though a Fan on the GPU is not so hard.

Yes, you can add extra cooling to help your old model 360 last longer.
The real problem was not the design, the GPU was designed to with stand that kind of heat. The problem was finally traced back to a material supplier for the GPU. They were suppling a material that would not transfer the heat like it was suppose to, causing the GPU support board to warp and break the solder joints. The problem took a long time to track down and was corrected for the 65nm GPU, (Jasper).

This mod is terrible, you can fix the overheating with AS5 paste on the heatsink and replacing the back fans with quiet high airflow ones.

Additionally you could buy two low profile (Server) heatsinks/fans and get them to fit and attach them via poxy.

Why would this guy take the hard/ugly way to fix this?

It isnt an issue with systems today, old makes sure. But thats why we all get a free Three Year Warranty ;).

It isnt an issue for me personally; and its about the games- Multiplayer and to me the Xbox has the best Multi-Player between the two.

Xbox Live and the extras that brings is why I own an Xbox.
PS3 = Blu-Ray Player + Amazing SP games.
