Video game designer Jane McGonigal spoke at last years TED conference about harnessing the power of game mechanics to make the world a better place.
In her speech at TED, McGonigal asks what would happen if we were able to utilize the powerful emotions, enthusiasm and social bonding we find within games and apply them to solving real-world issues and problems. She argues that since we are so passionate and enthusiastic about routinely saving worlds in the virtual realm, is it a far stretch to "learn the habits of heroes" and apply them to changing the real world in our offline lives.

With Tomb Raider 2, Silent Hill, Symphony of the Night, Tenchu, and Soul Reaver as backup contenders.
