Associatedcontent: These are my 5 favorite game consoles of all time. This is an unofficial list, and is only my personal opinion. Try to leave your opinions in the comments below. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this list as much as I did making it.

Surely the 360 has to be in the top 5 purely because it was the first console to really take HD and online gaming to the mainstream.

Sony even said themselves the PS3 wasnt designed to be an online console like the 360 was. Online was an afterthough after HD. After realising that more and more people wanted online play they had to step up, which was ultimatly a good thing.

The early PS3's had the ability to play PS1 and PS2 games.

That alone means three generations of AAA titles in one console.

3 amazing consoles in one > 1 amazing console.

This guy's website has been going for 2 weeks and everything he's posted has just been short opinion articles (My Favorite 360 Games, reviews of various games, Best Game Consoles of All Time, and other such crap... not one single article that touches on something going on in the industry, it's just one guy who opened up an Examiner site for himself and writes his opinion about some stuff).

Anybody that makes a "Top 5 Consoles Of All Time" type of list and includes any of the current-gen consoles is flame-baiting. Period. There's no way to do it without flame-baiting. Either people will disagree with the inclusion of one and not the other, or they'll disagree with the order, etc., it's just a ridiculous list to publish. Didn't we learn anything from the atrocious attempts to do this by IGN and GameDaily?

As if there is an actual official list. I really don't know why this specific writer's opinion is so important. Couldn't you just blog it? Now if the President wanted to give us a list, that would be neat.

Anyways, I think I would rank PS2 over N64 in terms of success, records, library, exclusives, etc. but I've never owned an N64 and it's my worthless opinion anyway...perhaps I shall write an article about my opinion and submit it to N4G!

For me, it's PS2 without a doubt. So many amazing games (FFX, MGS series, KH, GoW). I also still really love my SNES (great replayability in Bomberman and Super Metroid), N64 (home to the greatest console FPS ever), and Cube. Current favorite goes to the PS3. I'm backlogged about 20 titles on it. So many great games these past two generations, damn.

Who am I kidding, I can't pick a favorite. Too many great games all around!

I have no personal list b/c to me all the systems that I've had played were kickass. I liked the Nes, Snes, Sega Genesis (never played the Sega Master system or Commadore 64, wish I had though), N64, Saturn, PS1 were all awesome. Technically, there really is no wrong list of game consoles that you come up with imo.

I remember buying a PS2 and FFX. Good times! It was the best time to be a gamer. I remember being blown away by GTA III and just sucked into it. Today, I can't find it in me to play Episodes of Liberty City. I barely finished GTA IV and new FF just isn't as good as the older ones IMO. Besides some games like COD4, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, BioShock, Gears1, Batman AA, this gen kinda sucks and I'm not impressed.

Any top 5 console list without SNES automatically fails.

Any top console list that lists 360 above the PS3 automatically fails because whatever the 360 can do the PS3 can do better or just as good. PS3 is a more complete console...sporting many features that the 360 doesn't offer. Xbox Live is great but its not like PSN isn't comparable and FREE. Even if we take RROD and E70 out of the equation, the 360 is still not a better entertainment console than the PS3. Blu-ray for games and movies by itself would give the PS3 the edge without even factoring in other PS3 advantages.

My top 10 console list looks like this:

1. PS3 60GB (its a PS2 and a PS3, most powerful console ever, only current console with Blu-ray drive for games and movies, hard drive in each unit, best first party games, FREE PSN, Notebook hard drive, use of standards (usb, bluetooth),etc...too much to list)
2. PS2 (Legend among consoles)
3. SNES (Legend among consoles)
4. PS3(non 60GB)
5. PS1 (Legend among consoles)
6. NES (Legend among consoles)
7. Xbox (was most powerful, only console at the time with unified online network, hard drive in every unit, only console at the time capable of HD)
8. Xbox 360 (Xbox Live)
9. Sega Genesis
10. Dreamcast

60 GB and 20GB version are the only versions with both the Emotion Engine (CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (GPU).

60GB - Hardware based PS2 emulation
80GB - Software based PS2 emulation

Hardware based PS2 emulation > Software based PS2 emulation

logically speaking, the best console of all time is either ps1 or ps2. if it wasnt for the ps1 then we wouldn't have so many adult oriented games today. the n64 i loved but it only had a few good games where as the ps1 and ps 2 had an abundance of good games. the way that the ps3 is going i believe people will one day look at the ps3 as the best console ever made because of the technology and features it offers now and will offer in the future . we all logically can guess that features like skype will be on the ps3 one day. anyway, without ps1, i dont think consoles would have had so much fps and other games that warrants dual anolog. to each his own but ps1 or ps2 are the 2 best consoles ever.

I would say the best console of all time would be the PS2 for the simple fact it can play all the PS1 games along with all of the PS2 games. People have forgotten all the great PS1 games because well they have followed gaming. I play my Ps1 RPGS all the time threw my PS3/psp remote play and still to this day I love Final Fantasy Origins, Final Fantasy Anthology, and Final Fantasy Chronicles.

I only shortly had a Nintendo 64, bought it because it had the best and most intuitive control pads during those times.
Still do think even now I highly rate those pads as one of the best.

Reason I sold it, most games are just too kids stuff.

As a stand alone console though *PS3 should be there in the lists'.

emulators eat every console in just about everyway, even giving them back their online, or giving online play to games that didn't have it in the first place (Golden Eye 64.)

pc can't emulate ps3, xbox360 yet, so i guess you could make a case for those, adding in their emulating abililities for arguement.
